Hello! My gift was from Carol Kocian, who gave me the book by Mara Riley,
Whatever Shall I Wear? and several small lengths of basic cotton and linen
twill type tapes. And also pieces of a pale green toile cotton for my
quilting, too!

Since I have decided to start playing in the era generally associated with the
civil war of the US, I'm definitely going to be using everything!

Thank you Carol, for these thoughtful gifts!

Elena, Gia

Glad it arrived safely! I was horribly late in sending it--we've had really
vile, icey weather (although it's mostly just drippy/wet now), and it made
navigating my way to the post office a bit difficult!

2005-12-28 Thread Bjarne og Leif Drews
My gift exchanger, Tara Broadway got an embroidered purse with a Shorleyker
pattern, mirrored and flipped to make a motif for renaissance use. It was
embroidered on ivory silk taffeta with silk threads.

I didnt get her gift yeat, she emailed me and told me she had broken a leg
and therefore my gift wasnt send until last monday.

But always nice to waite for surprises.
From Leif i got a ligtbox, wich i have already taken in use, drafted pattern
for a ladys gusset bag embroidered with silk pansies, if it gets nice, i
want to give it for my sister.
Then i finally will be able to send away the francaise dress at the end of
this week for the lady i made it for in New York.

So i will be looking forwards to a time without any bonds

So far all of my gifts from friends and family have been for the geeky
side of me. (I will be meeting with my sewing/costume friends this
Friday) I got an MP3 player and a new printer/scanner/copier/fax. But
my Secret Santa, Diana Habra, sent me the most beautiful German goller
made from black wool and linen, decorated with a hand stitched border of
luscious fawn colored silk!

I will put pictures of it up soon on the h-costume picturetrail!

Re: [h-cost] Holiday gifts

2005-12-28 Thread Sue Clemenger
I didn't really get any this year, and haven't yet received my Secret Santa
present from the list exchange. I got lots of other very nice things,
though...several kinds of chocolate, a nice teapot, cat toys for my kitties,
a historical cookbook, etc.
Oh, waitI did buy myself a kit from Philosopher's Wool for a Fair Isle
Cardigan. Luscious, luscious colors...Not costume, but definitely
clothing, if that counts. And my sister's MiL sent me a hand-dyed silk
scarf from Bejing.
I gave a couple of textile-related things as gifts--one friend got a small
purse done in a fair isle pattern (knitted), and my BiL got a seaman's scarf
(knitted). My SiL, Beth, who is the other knitter in the family, is getting
handspun yarn from me for her projects.
Oh, ack, waitI actually *did* get something costume-related. A friend
gave me some wood-carving tools. I'm wanting to learn how to do basic
pewter casting, so I can make my own buttons for fitted gowns, and maybe
some pilgrims' badges, and you can use the carving tools to carve your stone
molds.

Re: [h-cost] Holiday gifts

2005-12-28 Thread ruthanneb
Costume-related: one of my sisters gave me half a yard of deep claret cotton
velvet for costumes--she said it was an odd present, but I can already think
of three ways I could use it for this summer's production!

Textile: my other sister gave me a throw, Lord Ganesha batiked on hand-woven
cotton (made in India)--Ganesh happens to be this agnostic's (i.e., my)
favorite god and also looms large in my legend since I have directed two
productions of Terrence McNally's A Perfect Ganesh.

Sewing: my sister-in-law gave me a small three-drawer chest which will sit on
my sewing table and hold, probably, 1) snaps, 2) hooks, and 3) decorative
fasteners.

MOST EXCELLENT: Kimiko Small was my h-cost santa. I'll post a picture of what
she sent so that all can enjoy it; for now, I'll quote the description she
included: The sweet-bag style purse is hand made by me. It is made of black
cotton velvet, with gold metallic dupionni silk applique, couched by hand with
red silk cord. Freshwater pearls, red glass seed beads and a dark red garnet
bead add final touches to the applique. The gold cording closure is held in
place by hand-sewn loops. The bag is lined with red silk shantung. I will
carry this when I serve as Queen at a medieval/ren banquet fundraiser late in
January. As a creation and as an accessory, its value to me goes FAR beyond the
h-cost exchange limit!

Ending of semester (English prof!) plus a holiday production outpaced my
imagination, and I santa-ed a gift certificate from a supplier I'm confident my
partner can use. But wish I had been able to rise to the level of creativity
I'm seeing in so many of the gift descriptions!

In the next few days (as soon as I get the thing uploaded) I'll be posting a
link to a photo I took after our recent (early December) snowfall. It will
serve as my holiday greeting card to you all

Meanwhile, ho ho ho!

My husband thoughtfully gave me several books from my costuming
wish-list, The Little Hat Book, How the West was Worn, and a book on
making victorian style ribbon trim (coincidentally I had been drooling

Cynthia, from the list, sent a box of assorted quilting fabrics and some
nifty buttons, for my other textile hobby.

I received a box from Germany that contained a lovely porcelain Faberge
egg. I'm having tourble figuring out the giver's name. Thank you
Secret Santa, who ever you are.

The closest costuming item I received was that my daughter I spent
part of the weekend updating my website and moving it over to a new
server. The only down part was the problem getting the e-mail
reestablished, I had 2 dayswith no mail hopefully there weren't that
many bounced messages. As soon as we found the problem I changed all
(where possible with out unscribing) my list settings to no mail.

A thought for next year if we do this again. I included a copy of the
information I submitted to Dawn in the package that went to my gift
recipient so she would get to know a bit about me.

My Secret Santa was Jayne Thomas from England who sent me some lovely

gorgeous red damask- I think this one is silk. She also sent me pictures
of her family and a lovely letter telling me all about herself. Thanks so

2005-12-28 Thread Jayne Thomas
Hi!

I received a child mannnequin from my parents this Christmas, so I now have a
'set' - the baby, toddler and child. I also received a copy of 'The Tudor
Housewife' by Alison Sim, which has a chapter on housework, which includes the
Tudor way of doing the laundry and stain removal! I got a copy of 'Shakespeare
in Love' as I like Judi Dench, and of course, the costumes!

My secret Santa present hasn't arrived yet (the Royal Mail can be so slow
sometimes!), so I have something to look forward to!

Wishing everybody the best for 2006!
  Jayne

I received a book on beading, and my secret Santa gift was a
beautiful bookmark from Rebecca Schmitt. It is done in
meticulous blackwork and is too pretty to use (but I will
probably use it carefully - maybe in QEW Unlocked). Most of my
gifts were more cat than costume oriented. Oh well, most of my
friends and family know I love cats and they don't know much about
costuming.

I am embarrassed to say that I threw the box away before I had a chance to
copy the name off it. I think she was from Oregon or Washington. It was a
great fur shrug like they have in all the stores now. The ribbon was a
chartreuse color. I just love it. If you recognize yourself, please email

My secret Santa was Catherine Kinsey, who made the most wonderful needlebook
out of handdyed linen, with a mermaid embroidered in silk floss. As if that
wasn't enough, she enclosed a brass pin dating from the late 1600's.

Since I do a LOT of handsewing, I've already put both items to use, and am
the envy of my sewing friends.

The only other costume oriented gifts I recieved were TWO reproduction
sewing birds. One is now permanently mounted on the counter next to my
sewing machine, and the other is in my traveling sewing kit. I've used them
both already and they really do make handsewing easier.

It's a fancy clamp-thingy, that functions almost as a third hand, to help
you with some sorts of handsewing tasks, when a third hand would be really
handy (no pun intended, truly...just feeling the lack of a good vocabulary
tonight).
I don't own one, but I've seen them in the occasional catalogue over the
