Re: [h-cost] Is this real or not?
I found a photo on eBay that is being described as a post-mortem bride photo. What do you think, is she death or not? Read the description the seller has of the bride. The item number is 380202466338 I don't believe this is a post mortem photo. I don't think that woman looks dead, she has the same rigid posture as almost any photo taken at that time--sitting utterly still for that long would not be conducive to a relaxed posture! The flowers do look off, but I believe brides and grooms often posed for their wedding portrait some time after the ceremony, so it could be her bouquet had been dried for preservation. Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?
I've got a princess seamed fantasy pirate vest on my virtual dress form. Saturday is opening day of the local ren faire and opening weekend is pirate weekend so it seemed the natural thing to do. I made a new skirt out of red scrim, and I re-furbed an old one to wear over that for modesty. Most sewing I've done in years. One of my dress forms is wearing a linen undergown and linen overdress I just hemmed for a friend. She bought it ready made, and it was pretty, but about six inches too long. The other one is sadly, at the moment naked except for a couple Viking things belonging to another friend that need work and are just tossed over the top. Re: [h-cost] HELP!
Thank you everyone so much for your suggestions. The recommendation on using a projector has always intrigued me but the unfortunate thing is that now days people who would or did once use them are less likely to, since the upgraded technology has led many to discard the old projector and adopt newer systems such as power point slides, etc. You can, however, still find small projectors at craft stores. I've purchased the gridded pattern interfacing at JoAnn's, and in fact, as soon as DH finds a job, I'm going to have to make a serious supply run. Need interfacing, embroidery stabilizer, just general basics. When I don't have the gridded interfacing on hand, a roll of white paper from an office supply store and a quilter's ruler work too. Re: [h-cost] What costume things did you learn in the 60s?
I watched my mother sew from the time I was very young.? She learned from her mother and had designed and made her own formals in the late '40's. At 5'11 in a day with no Tall Catalogs, it was a necessity!? She made a Princess dress for me for a second-grade production of Sleeping Beauty.? It was pink with a net skirt.? I also had a Pilgrim's dress in 5th grade for Halloween made from a sheet that she dyed grey.? By the '60's I was sewing for myself I was born in '63, so I wasn't exactly learning to sew in the 60's, but my mom sewed, and I used to take the snaps and make clothes for my dolls. I'd leave them scattered everywhere and Mom would get aggravated--she said years later that if she had known what I would learn to do, she never would have said a word! The first costume I remember having, other than Halloween, was when our little town celebrated its Centennial, in 1973. Mom made us all pioneer gowns, complete with sunbonnets. Re: [h-cost] Help! Tear Away Stabilizer
I am working on my daughter's prom dress. There is an outer layer of organza that is very slippery. Is there a trick to keep it from sliding all over the sewing machine when stitching? On the list, I recall someone mentioning a few years ago, a tear away stabilizer. Can someone point me to a webpage that tells how to use this. All I have found are embroidery webpages. I have to finish the dress tonight. So I have to find a stabilizer at Hancock Fabrics, Joann's, or Michael's. BTW, I can't use the iron-on stabilizer because the organza, because the organza has a plastic type glitter on it. The glitter melt when an iron touches it. In the notions section of JoAnn's or Hancock Fabrics, look in the embroidery stabilizer section. I buy non-iron-on tear-away stabilizer there all the time. It pins into place. Hear, hear. That's been my experience also. Within ten years or so, the Singer name was sold, so the new Singer machines are not really the Singers that we all know and love. I have been able to get old, black Singers for under $100.0, and they are by far the best machines I have ever owned. Marjorie My old Singer was $60. It came IN a cabinet, complete with matching bench, and all accessories, including the buttonholer. I had to replace the motor, which cost all of $17 including shipping, and involved two screws to attach it to the machine. You are looking at couching. You just take 3 cords and lay them down and cross them at matched interrvals. Pin them at where they cross and couch them down. This looks like a silver cord, but it could be done with any color. It is one of the easiest kinds of knotwork to do. It can be done in cross stictch and is in a lot of cross stitch books that have knotwork. Good luck. *(* Aspasia Yes, but she specified PES or HUS format; those are formats for machine embroidery. BTW, are their embroidery sticks machine-specific in any way, or can you use any computer data stick/flash drive? Thanks, Fran I never bought a machine from a dealer before my embroidery machine, because I never was buying the higher-end machines. (And my PE750D is not exactly high end, still, but it's the most I ever spent on a machine.) After this one experience, I can't imagine buying from a store instead of a dealer ever again. My dealer has been terrific. AFAIK, the higher-end embroidery machines can use regular USB memory sticks. My machine takes a reader/writer card and a convertor box. What kind do you have and what do you like about it? Fran I have a Brother PE750D. (got the D version so I can make Goofy stuff for my collector husband) I like it because it is fairly easy to use, it stitches beautifully, it has a 5x7 embroidery field (4x4 field is just too limiting) . I've embroidered dense designs on towels, beautiful airy free-standing lace, and quilt blocks, and it handles whatever I throw at it. Reasonable price helps too. Right now I've got about $1000 into, for hardware and software, and if I sat down and diligently worked on learning to digitize my own designs, I could quite feasibly never have to buy anything else other than thread and stabilizer. Re: [h-cost] Clarification: Questionaire
Time to come clean...What was the most price of you have ever paid for a book, collection of work, etc. I think it's a toss-up between $177 for the St. Louis Psalter facsimile (which I wrote to the publisher for), and the ABEGG book, which was something like $160. If I'd thought I might have money I could have had a copy of Christie's English Medieval Embroidery for $1500 about five years ago. *sigh* Jen The most I've ever paid for a book was $132 for Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlock'd. Jen, if it's any comfort--my music-collector-DJ husband once had a copy of the Beatles Butcher Cover in his hands, and it was only $300. Re: [h-cost] How Many Costume Books/Magazines/Photos Do You Own
This could be really fun to poll the list. Lurkers come out, wherever you are! About how many costume/fashion related books or magazines do you own? Not all that many--finances are limited, so I try to only buy the ones that are truly useful to me. Since my costuming interests are strictly 15th-16th century, that helps. Though interests are expanding, and I have done everything from t-tunics to Viking to Elizabethan for customers. I traded a pile of custom-made t-tunics for a pavilion. What was the first one you purchased? Where did you purchase it? My first big (and so far biggest) purchase was QEWU, about two years ago. Purchased it from a German seller via ABEbooks. What was your most recent purchase? The Tudor Tailor. Next will be The Medieval Tailor's Assistant and Moda a Firenze. (I may wait and try to get that from Poison Pen Press at Pennsic) ? About how many period photographs do you own just for the costuming? None What book or magazine is your most treasured...if your house was on fire, you would take it with you. QEWU undoubtedly What is the worse costume book that you own? I know Robin has a collection! See above--I have learned enough from other people to not spend my limited funds on books I won't use Do you have a room devoted to your collection? My books are in a bookcase in my sewing room, so not directly, but yes, only computer and sewing activities happen in this room. (I understand there is a whole house attached to this room, but I think it's a dirty lie...) When did you start collecting? About when I found the SCA, so about eight or nine years ago Do you consider your collection for business or pleasure? Both Optional questions: How many sewing machines do you own? What types and age? I have an old Kenmore that is in need of minor repairs, and 1948 Singer 99k that is gorgeous and runs like a dream, a cheapo Brother that I use on a daily basis, and a Brother PE750D that does strictly embroidery. How many sewing patterns do you own? Not so many any more. I decided it was silly to hang onto most of my Big 3 patterns, when my tastes (and skills!) have gone in a more accurate direction, so I got rid of most of them. I have about 30 from the independent pattern companies (Margo Anderson, Reconstructing History, Alter Years, and Fantasy Fashion) that live in a drawer of my sewing table where they are easily accessible. What I find both interesting and depressing in this discussion is that (a) judging from the books discussed, almost all the people who collect and spend much money on costume books are in the SCA and (b) a lot of people would rather spend money on fabric and sewing machines. Fran Not always a matter of would rather--but if money is limited, I might buy a book this month, some fabric next month...I have to be judicious with my purchases. I was going to see the movie this coming weekend as I hate dealing with large crowds, but the last Harry Potter book will be hitting my mailbox sometime Saturday, so I will have to read the last book first!! Cindy Abel I went to see it yesterday afternoon, and was pleased to find it not terribly crowded at all. Of course, that could be because they had it showing in three theaters, at staggered times, but whatever the reason I was rather glad. No one kicked my seat, I didn't hear anyone talking, and no one's cell phone rang through the whole thing! Oh, and I enjoyed the movie. And wished I could go see it again, when I stepped out into the parking lot where the temp was well over 90 degrees. bleccch. Re: [h-cost] Re: Hancock's closing and Walmart
Walmart carries garment quality fabric? I suppose it does depend on location. The Walmart here (NW WA) has a somewhat diverse craft department, carries a limited selection of patterns and I haven't seen any fabric there that I would want to make clothing from unless it was a one time use/halloween costume type thing. It seems to cater to quilters and home crafters. However, my MIL used to be the fabric/craft department manager for a Walmart in Utah and she says they sold a lot of dress fabric. I can't imagine they would eliminate the fabric in a location that had decent sales. Annette I've never seen actual clothing fabric at my local WalMarts either. However, I find it simply astonishing that, apparently, raising a big enough stink can even have an effect on WalMart. Where both of the store in my town were losing their fabric department previously, in at least one of them it will now remain. (Still nothing I want to buy there as far as fabric goes, but it does come in handy for the occasional spool of thread...even if going in there makes me claustrophobic.) Then there are the poor souls who can hear the sound of all types of fabric and they do quilting, historic costuming, mundane sewing and can't possibly leave a fabric shop without something because one of their addictions will catch them. :-) Elizabeth Yep, that would be me... Knitting and crocheting are both very simple. Gail Finke I know how to knit, no problem. I just don't enjoy it. My mother liked to knit, but wasn't nuts about crochet. I sew, crochet, paint, and embroider. I can live without knitting. :-) Dianne ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Multiple textile techniques...
A friend has been trying to teach her daughter to knit (she's 8), and I may suggest crochet first for her. It's a lot more instant gratification, useful for those with a small attention span. grins..yup, that's why I like it so much! I always say, it's like being a Beatles fan or and Elvis fan; most people I know are either one or the other. I don't know anyone who can do both knit and crochet. lol...My parents were of the first rock and roll generation, so I was lucky enough to learn to appreciate both Elvis AND the Beatles--my mom adored Elvis, and the first album I remember owning was Beatles 65, though I know we had Monkees albums before that.. I don't know what it is about knitting that bothers me so. I just know it drives me up a wall. Re: [h-cost] When and how did you start making costume?
I hope to get a dog when I have more spare time! P.S. My father hated cats, and wouldn't allow us to have one; all of our pets when I was growing up were dogs. Big dogs, like Labradors and Weimaraners. But my mother liked all kinds of animals, and so did her second husband. The pet they had the year they both died was a charming gray and white tabby, who is now my costuming companion. :-) I grew up with cats, so sometimes I miss them. But I don't miss litter boxes. I do mis having a dog, especially when I have three little boys here, and I firmly believe a boy should have a dog. When I buy a house, hopefully within the next year, I'm going to buy a dog. They want just a dog--I want a Sheltie, and I won't settle for anything else. That's what I grew up with, and that's what I want. They are the perfect dog--smart, gentle, and beautiful. We just finished up with some very heavy rains here in Eastern PA... and now it's chilly! A group of us Eastern PA fiber geeks had gotten together on Saturday to dye fabric and fibers, and we were intending to make a felted wool rug--had the frame set up and everything--but it was just too blasted cold to get that wet and messy. Quite annoying, really, I really wanted to learn how to do that! Dianne ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

- Original Message - From: Suzi Clarke [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Historical Costume [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 22, 2006 5:12 AM Subject: [h-cost] When and how did you start making costume? In discussion with a couple of friends at the weekend, we fell to talking about when we started sewing. One friend is a re-enactor, the other a former wardrobe mistress for the National Theatre among other things. Both of them had started very early, making clothes for themselves and for dolls. And they did it for pleasure! (And I am a professional costume maker.) Now I never made clothes for dolls that I remember. As a teenager I occasionally, and very badly, made the odd skirt or blouse for myself. I, too, started out making Barbie clothes. And I loved Madame Alexander dolls for their exquisite costumes. But I still hate sewing up the costumes! I love the working out of what the customer wants, the choosing of the fabrics, the making of the patterns and cutting them out, (skip the next bit - the sewing up) love hand finishing, trimming, and fitting. But please could someone tell me where to get a magic wand to sew everything together? The only part of the above that I DON'T love is the fitting. I truly, truly enjoy sewing. I do get impatient toward the end of the finishing up stage first. For my own costumes, I've started sewing by hand , mostly for authenticity, partly because it forces me to slow down and really savor the process. coincidentally to the sewing conversation, we wondered if it was a given that costume makers, whether professional, gifted amateur, or occasional maker, have cats? All the ones I know do. Nope. I rent my house, and my husband hates cats. Besides, I have a cockatiel and an African grey parrot, and I would really prefer that they not become kitty kibble. Since nothing else is going on here, this may be a good time for people to talk about their current costume/textile-related projects. Currently working on: 2 wedding dresses--one a simple Irish Dress in cotton, the other is an Italian gown, with chemise, undergown, and open-front overgown. The two bottom layers are linen (white and a gorgeous dark green), the overgown is a pretty burgundy that the bride purchased. For myself- restitching a few of the pearls on my velvet Gown of Doom so I can wear it to an event next Sunday, and I'm in the planning stages of a new dress for Pennsic. I have eight yards of ivory tropical weight wool, and I'm considering sleeves and forepart in either gold or navy silk. And the Evil Mentor to whom I am Minion showed me Saturday how to make spangles out of gold wire! I also have 25 yards of 3.5 oz linen to make underwear for Pennsic. The ultimate goal is underwear equaling number of days at event +1, but I won't quite be there by Pennsic. I promised my husband I would reduce what I'm taking thyis year, and I'm thinking along the lines of all my underwear and four-five gowns. I also need hats and veils. Busy busy busy! If anyone if planning a trip to Orlando, you might want to take a side trip to Sarasota and visit the Ringling Museum. It is well worth it! Penny Ladnier, Owner I have a dear friend I grew up with whose (now ex) wife was the one who introduced me to Ren Faires and the SCA. His brother graduated from the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College. He also was in charge of the jail at the Michigan Ren Faire the first year I went, 1994. And you know, knowing that family, I wasn't at all surprised. grins Dianne ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

The line between entertainment and art is extremely flexible, unless there's so much art you can't possibly view it as entertainment. With novels, it's like Charles Dickens, and many other authors, are one generation's entertainment. Then later, just because they're old, they get canonized in English Lit classes as ART. Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly happy to read the stuff and discuss the symbolism in it to my and everyone else's heart's content. But it still seems a little ironic. And some of us still see it as entertainment--I found The Pickwick Papers to be one of the funniest books I ever read, and Sam Weller is quite possibly my favorite book character of all time. There are parts of that book that made me positively roar with laughter, and others that made me cry. Sometimes, the entertainment of previous days survives as entertainment as well as art, just because it's GOOD. To drag this kicking and screaming back on topic (at lest somewhat) I ahve always wanted to make a Sam Weller doll. Now I have to delve back into the book and read up on his clothing. Oh, the pain! Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Sometimes, the entertainment of previous days survives as entertainment as well as art, just because it's GOOD. * Why is it assumed that art is not entertaining? Weird. Perhaps because everyone has heard of this wonderful artistic film or book (insert film or book of your choice) that turns out to be an absolute crashing bore, but receives rave reviews because it's art. (It's late, I am seriously caffeine deprive, please don't ask me tonight for specific examples.) I know that Picasso is considered fine art. I still don't like it. It simply doesn't appeal to me. The Harry Potter books are *not* considered fine art, but they are entertaining. I happen to enjoy them thoroughly. I haven't read the DaVinci code, or seen *any* of the films we've been discussing here. Amusement parks bore me to tears, museums bring me to tears of joy. To each his own, right? Decent story, fun characters and okay clothing but the music..Very rock and totally out of place (along with the icky lampshade hat on his girlfriend). It would have been great without the rock music and some of the questionable clothing I loved that movie. But I wasn't expecting authenticity, I was expecting FUN, and I got that. The characters were enjoyable, and the story was classic poor boy makes good, which is timeless.
