Washougal, Washington is just across the I 205 bridge and a bit east from Portland/Vancouver. It has the BIG Pendleton outlet store. What you see is what you get. I picked up 15 yards of light as a feather light, dark teal, 100% Pendleton wool on the remnant table for $1.50 a yard. It is in several pieces but I can deal with that! Also has a huge crate full of buttons - oh, and seconds and older model Pendleton clothing for mundane wear. Look up www.mapquest . Put in Portland, Oregon - Washougal, Washington - Milwaukie, Oregon and there you have us. Oh yeah! Every time I go to Portland I bring back a large box of wool. Someone here in CA asked me if it was poly-wool, and I said no, it was Pendleton. RE: [h-cost] Hancock Fabrics
Both stores are on the Eastern side of the Willamette river (that's Will-am-ut, not Will-ha-met) river in Portland, Oregon. Both are huge, about a city block square. Mill Ends is off McLoughlin Blvd, and south towards Milwaukie (sorry, but the spelling is our very own). It has the extra added attraction of being near a Pendleton outlet store as well. That outlet store has wool on spindles for weaving, Untra-Suade for $15.00 a yard, and fabric that runs about $10 a yard - what you see is what you get. Other than that they have almost anything you might want to make something like BUTTONS! Fabric Depot (Despot) is located on the eastern side of the city on 122nd Avenue and Stark (numbered streets run north and south, named ones east/west) and has the lovely habit of allowing you to order or buy in bolts, boxes, full whatevers and then giving you an automatic 40% off. I buy pins by the 5 pound box. Since they don't have to put them on those little hooks, they pass the savings on to us. They also carry spiral boning, hoop wire, solid boning and front opening busks now as well as almost anything else you might want. Did this post make anyone else's head hurt from the names involved (grin)? Poland? Then I got the feeling that the country wasn't what was named by Youngstown, but then Boardman (which is in Oregon as far as I'm concerned) came up. Then we had China (Canton) to balance out Poland! That's what happens when you read in the preview screen and haven't an clue what you have just opened. Actually, Poland is just south of Youngstown in the Boardman area. It takes me the better part of an hour to get there, and I live just east of Canton. It also takes about the same amount of time to get there from Akron. The last time I was there I was able to get some nice pieces of suit weight wool in a warm brown and pieces in a lovely blue red. I'm hoping to stop this year on the way home from Pennsic. kate - Original Message - From: "REBECCA BURCH" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Historical Costume" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, June 02, 2006 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [h-cost] Hancock Fabrics Well, they must have heard you because they list a store in Poland, which is in the Akron/Canton area. Rebecca, This is the way our Joann's was before it closed. If I want to go to a crafts store, Michael's and Ben Franklins is so much better. Joann's wasn't even a good craft store when it was here. Re: [h-cost] Hancock Fabrics
The problem with Joann's and Hancock had to face is the amount of people sewing have drastically reduced over the years. All of our Joann's closed up about five or so years ago while they were in bankruptcy. The problem about location is that most of Hancock were built three or more decades ago. Most were in a good location at the time. Now that traffic patterns have changed in most cities, their once good location is no longer easy to access or in a good neighborhood. I have lived in our location 20 years. The only Hancock to close was a Hancock Warehouse store. Which was huge and had the biggest selection I have every seen. It closed about 10 years ago. All the other fabric stores closed a long time ago. We used to have a really nice chain fabric store called Piece Goods. Its been gone a for long time. I never liked the Joann's when it was here. It was more like Michael's Craft than a fabric store. Re: [h-cost] Hancock Fabrics
I actually don't see much difference where I am in the inventories carried by Hancock's, Jo-Ann's and the fabric sections of Beverlee's. All of them are now about half-and-half fabric and "crafts." While each of them has some things the others don't, that means they are in _more_ direct competition than ever before. That doesn't bode well for all of the chains surviving. I went into the local Hancock's lately (about four blocks from where I work -- not the one on Florin Road) and noticed that they now have a certain number of "prime" seasonal fabrics up front -- silks, crepes and so forth -- and then the rest of the fabric section is all flat folded or discounted fabrics. That's not a good sign either but I like the store because it's been run locally by a very nice group of staff and a manager who's both friendly and competent. 0 Chris Laning | <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> + Davis, California http://paternoster-row.org - http://paternosters.blogspot.com ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
