I bought the discontinued Simplicity 2529 both for the Yule outfit and just to have it, because though I would "probably" never use it "as is" you never know, just as you said, when some interesting chance might arise! :) Now to have fun with muslin, trying to get that peak into the top of a sleeve cap! Good point, that, and probably the one thing I forget (then have a d'oh! moment afterwards!) just about every time I dye something. I'll give it a shot, see what happens, and continue searching for the perfect colour even if not tucked. A dye experiment does sound like fun, that's for sure. Nothing like a convention to bring back the desire to sew... just got home last night from a wonderful small con in Maryland, Intervention Con (your online life in-person!) and saw some excellent costuming. I just called my local Joanne's and indeed, that pattern isn't in the drawer and isn't in the current book, BUT! it is still on-line and I just ordered a copy on-line, and so far, the order appears to be proceeding normally. I think the fokti example is done quite well, the only quibble I would have is that the original fabric is clearly a densely textured fabric (someone mentioned the original designer said it was like a snake's skin) and the fabric used in the reproduction is not a textured fabric. This same problem often occurs when we make reproduction historical clothing as many of the beautiful textured and patterned fabrics of the past are just not available or are only available in upholstery weights. IMO, the fotki (movie) picture is the closest to how the gown looks in the movie. The wehartit is too blue/emerald and the wikia photo has been brightened to an extreme degree to show the texture of the fabric. unless a person is dyeing their own fabric for this project, you are limited to what can be found to purchase, which is probably why the costume made on the fotki project is too emerald looking. Good attempt. Color and the sleeves were not quite on the mark but still good. The under gown's sleeve on the movie outfit appears to be a tight cothardie sleeve with lots of buttons running up the sleeve. I actually had my nose 2" from that dress at the travel exhibit (Boston Museum of Science). No photos, of course, but I remember... pine-ish color (maybe overshot with something else?), with some kind of smocking -- it seemed almost random (but wasn't). Not much help, I know... I can't address most of your questions - I haven't seen the movie enough to be able to fast-forward directly to that scene. However, I maybe can offer a suggestion to the fabulous sleeve caps. There is a Simplicity pattern for a dreadful costume cape. Unfortunately it's out of print. It's really close to what you want. But if you could get a copy of it, I'm sure you could extend the points to the height you wanted.
