know I have done this but it may have been with XP or even 3.11
seems like it was possible to create a file in the root ( forgot what

Once I realized that I would have to give up a Win 7 license key I
went and installed Win 7 Pro into the free space I had save for win

they lock up the activation for good... just in case your install goes bad.

Not sure. Frankly, I hadn't done much research before ordering - $25 is
within my impulse buy range. I think maybe the difference is price - these
guys are including a fast charge cable in addition to the tester for $25,
while the others you linked seem to be offering just a tester (but with
digital output) for $30 or more.

If the cable works as advertised then I'll be happy with the analog reader.
We'll see.

And if anyone has recommendations for good, high-quality USB wall warts
that aren't massive, I'm all ears.

Win 8 UPGRADE is different. Once you install the original OS is
overwritten and the license key is gone. But you can put use the
upgrade disk to install move your license to another computer but I
guess you have to waste another OS license key?? It is confusing.

don't they at first give like 3 days b4 activation ?

Win 7 is 30 days... I would not be surprised if Win 8 is a few days
before a activation sticks... but I don't know.

How do you install it clean when the upgrade disk is not made to

in the old days I think they did or we booted to a boot disk with cd
support and ran setup from there.

I think the new stuff if smarter.
Memory is a little fussy.
Remember when cd installs needed drivers ?

How do you install it clean when the upgrade disk is not made to
boot? You must have a OEM or retail disk.

Lets just say it was messy and did not work well at all.

The clean install with Windows Easy Transfer worked a lot better.

I think you misunderstood what I meant... the Windows 8 PRO upgrade
disk... what MS was selling a year ago for $25 download and $50
disk... does not boot by design. It will only run from within windows
and it will only install over a qualified OS = XP, Vista, Win 7 with
a legal activated license.

Winterlight,

If you opt the DVD version, you get a DVD shipped to you. Before I did a clean
install I waited for the DVD to arrive. Those days were hard on my nerves :)

Re: [H] Win 8 upgrade install.

2013-11-20 Thread Winterlight
Yes, I bought a DVD version from Newegg on sale with $40 MS Rebate
for an eventual 30 bucks. I just thought I would keep that for a new
laptop so I can upgrade to PRO. But it is the same thing as the
download able version upgrade disk = install within windows. I know
there is a hack way of doing it but I do not trust MS enough not to
have them install and update one day and then pop up and say your
license isn't good for this install. Besides, this install looks fine
to me .. no different then when I installed Windows 7 Pro on top of
Windows 7 Home premium.. just delete the old windows folder and it is all good.

Both of my win 8 upgrade CD's boot and install fine. I did clean installs with
all my win 7 upgrades too (all 13 of them). I was under the impression that all
the discs are the same and the only difference is the key to determine which
version loads. FYI, mine were both win 8 pro upgrades. Don't know if that makes
any difference. They are bootable though.
