Adler Collection and its Usage as a Research Tool," in Jewish Quarterly Review 90, 3-4 (2000): 405-415. The book also received praise from Heidi G. Lerner & Seth Jerchower in their "The Penn/Cambridge Genizah Fragment Project: Issues in Description, Access, and Reunification" (Philadelphia, 2006): "Danzig's 1997 catalog of Rabbinic fragments at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, while oriented upon the holdings of one local collection, exhaustively provides cross-matches and concordances. " The Cairo Geniza is a collection of almost 280,000 Jewish manuscript fragments found in the Genizah or storeroom of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat, presently Old Cairo, Egypt. Some additional fragments were found in the Basatin cemetery east of Old Cairo, and the collection includes a number of old documents bought in Cairo in the later 19th century. It is presently dispersed among a number of libraries, including the libraries of Cambridge University and the University of Manchester . In 1896, English travelers Agnes S. Lewis and Margaret D. Gibson returned from Egypt with fragments from the Genizah they considered to be of interest, and showed them to Solomon Schechter at Cambridge. Schechter, already aware of the Genizah but not of its significance, immediately recognized the importance of the material. He later went to Egypt, acquired many documents, and brought the contents of the Genizah to scholarly and popular attention .The Taylor-Schechter collection at Cambridge has nearly 193,000 fragments (137,000 shelf-marks); there are a further 31,000 fragments at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Also, the John Rylands University Library in Manchester holds a collection of over 11,000 fragments " (Wikipedia, 2011). SUBJECT(S): Cairo Genizah -- Catalogs. [ha-Safran]: Iakerson work not published by Library of Congress
Dear Colleagues, It appears that an unclear citation in our recent announcement, below, is leading some to believe that a recent book by Shimon Iakerson, "Jewish Treasures of Petersburg: Scrolls, Codices, Documents," was published by the Library of Congress in 2011. In fact it was not--this citation was only meant to show the source of our biographical information about Iakerson in our book description and not the publication information for the last item we mention about him. To order, please email us with your requests to d...@danwymanbooks.com. --- Mintz, Sharon Liberman and Elka Deitsch KEHILLAT HA-KODESH: CREATING THE SACRED COMMUNITY : THE ROLES OF THE RABBI, CANTOR, MOHEL AND SHOHET IN JEWISH COMMUNAL LIFE : AN EXHIBITION, DECEMBER 18, 1996-APRIL 17, 1997 New York City: The Library, the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 1997 Softcover, 8vo, 70 pages, 22 cm. Includes 58 color and black/white images. Kehillat ha-Kodesh was an exhibition which examined the offices of rabbi, shochet (ritual slaughterer), mohel (circumciser) and cantor. These professionals were appointed by the community to enable Jews to fulfill the basic ritual requirements of everyday life. They served both as leaders and teachers: not only did they perform rituals on behalf of the community, but they trained and certified the next generation of leaders as well, ensuring continuity of Jewish life. The exhibition brought together visually outstanding works that illustrated these dual roles and engaged viewers in an exploration of the material culture created by these professions and preserved by the library. Kehillat ha-Kodesh consisted of magnificently decorated documents, historically significant manuscripts and rare printed books showcasing these professionals as pillars of Jewish communal life. Many of these objects had never before been exhibited; the exhibition allowed a glimpse into a rarely seen segment of the library's outstanding collection of illustrated broadsides. Highlights of this exhibition include lavishly decorated broadsides created in honor of the circumcision ceremony and documents associated with eminent leaders of the Jewish community, such as, a semikhah (rabbinical ordination) issued by Hayyim Yosef David Azulai and a magnificent shechitah and bedikah certificate given to Samuel ben Isaac Luzzato by the Jewish community of Venice, 1768. In addition, a richly detailed portrait of the diversity of Jewish life is clear through such fascinating documents as an extremely rare shehitah kabbalah granted to a woman to practice ritual slaughter in Mantua, 1581 and an unusual milah book written in Barbados in 1765. SUBJECT(S): Rabbis -- Office -- Bibliography -- Exhibitions. Cantors (Judaism) -- Bibliography -- Exhibitions. Berit milah -- Bibliography -- Exhibitions. Shehitah -- Bibliography -- Exhibitions. THE ORIGINS OF THE SEDER: THE PASSOVER RITE AND EARLY RABBINIC JUDAISM New York, JTS Press 2002 ISBN: 0873340876. Paperback, xix, 188 pages, illustrated, 24 cm. New Edition (Originally published in hardback in 1984). The Passover and its rite are central in the history of Judaism and Christianity. Explaining how the Passover evening celebration, the seder, became one of the most popular Jewish rituals, Baruch M. Bokser shows how it was based on and transformed a biblical sacrificial meal. Bokser demonstrates the significance of the motif of Passover in ancient Judaism, indicating why Jews and Christians employed it to express hopes for redemption. And he also illuminates the process of historical development through the interaction of a traditional heritage with contemporary and outside cultural influences. This is a fascinating book which will add much to our understanding of Judaism and Christianity and of the nature of religion in a changing world. Baruch Bokser was ordained as a rabbi at Jewish Theological Seminary and also received a Ph.D. in religious studies from Brown University. Beginning in 1974, he taught at the University of California at Berkeley, leaving in 1982 for Dropsie College in Philadelphia (now the Annenberg Research Institute for Judaic and Near Eastern Studies). Then in 1986, Bokser returned to the Jewish Theological Seminary to join the faculty and where, at his early death at age 44 in 1990, he was the director of the program in ancient Judaism. The hypothesis and argument are clearly spelled [out] and and then supported by detailed references to various Talmud and Mishnah sections which are reproduced as necessary. Although...reprinted in 2002, it is current and consistent with more recent works. I read the book in the weeks leading up to 2009 Passover holidays and found much in Dr. Bokser's work to work into the actual Seder and ignite the interest of those present. In essence, Dr. Bokser makes a very persuasive case that the Passover Seder, as molded in the Hagaddah, was one of the key pillars for the survival of Judaism after the catastrophic destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. Certainly, he establishes that the basics of the Seder as we know it today with its emphasis on freedom, community and symbolic ritual owes its genesis to the Tanna and the Amora of the centuries following the destruction" (Jerome Hoffman, Amazon review). $25.00 We have a limited supply on hand, please order your copy today. Then in 1986, Bokser returned to the Jewish Theological Seminary to join the faculty and where, at his early death at age 44 in 1990, he was the director of the program in ancient Judaism. Available: Historical Images of Jerusalem, Israel, & the Temple: An Exhibition Catalog (view online at http://www.danwymanbooks.com/towards.htm) Friends- Another excellent exhibition catalog for you: We are proud to offer this high quality publication which accompanied the outstanding exhibition of books, manuscripts, maps, and ephemera at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary here in New York: Mintz, Sharon Liberman and Elka Deitsch. Curators TOWARDS THE ETERNAL CENTER: ISRAEL, JERUSALEM AND THE TEMPLE; AN EXHIBITION, MARCH 5-JUNE 27, 1996, THE LIBRARY OF THE JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY OF AMERICA New York, Jewish Theological Seminary of America Library, 1996 Original Softcover. 8vo. 71 pages. illus. 23 cm. A catalog of materials in the JTS library related to Israel Jerusalem; dedicated to the memory of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. "The Land of Israel is situated in the center of the world, and Jerusalem in the center of the Land of Israel, and the Holy Temple in the center of Jerusalem..." (Midrash Tanhuma, Kedoshim 10) This expressive midrash characterizes three spiritual centers of the world upon which countless generations of Jews have projected their hopes and dreams. The desire to reach these centers permeates almost every aspect of religious Judaism: its thought, custom and liturgy. The importance of these locations is emphasized even in the rules governing prayer: Jews in the Diaspora face Israel, Jews in Israel face Jerusalem, and Jews in Jerusalem face the Temple. In a heroic effort to capture the physical and spiritual significance of these three centers, scholars, travelers and inhabitants of the Holy Land have produced a vast array of manuscripts, printed books, letters, prints and maps. These tangible artifacts of Israel, Jerusalem, and the Temple serve as more than geographical descriptions or historical records; their many variations reveal the chroniclers' desire to synthesize the temporal and the spiritual. Pictorial representations and descriptive words attempt to capture the full spirit of a land that for so long has been the subject of such varying expectations; even a consensus of its history is impossible to come by. The exhibition which accompanied this book viewed the Holy Land through an exploration of the images and words created during the last six centuries. Towards the Eternal Center is divided into three sections: Israel depicted in maps, Jerusalem represented in manuscripts, rare printed books and postcards, and the Temple depicted in prints and mizrahs. SUBJECT(S): Manuscripts, Hebrew -- Exhibitions. Named Corp: Temple of Jerusalem (Jerusalem) -- Pictorial works -- Exhibitions. Geographic: Jerusalem -- Pictorial works -- Exhibitions. AN EXHIBITION, APRIL 6-JULY 31, 1995 ISBN 0873340698 New York: The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 1995. Soft Cover, Square 8vo, 72 pages. Black and white illustrations on nearly every page. The eighteenth century often has been dubbed "the golden age of English caricature". The purpose of this exhibition was to present a selection of caricatures of the Jews of eighteenth-century England, chosen primarily from the extensive holdings of the Israel Solomons Collection at the Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary. The JTSA library houses one of only three large-scale collections of such prints in the world, the others being those of the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum and the privately owned collection of Mr. Alfred Rubens of London. Leaving aside for the moment any intrinsic artistic merit, the particular interest of these prints is as a social and pictorial record of gentile attitudes toward the Jews in a country that was long heralded as among the most liberal in eighteenth-century Europe. Despite the progressive and humanitarian ideals of the intellectual Enlightenment, Jews were still being depicted in English popular culture as they had been since medieval times, as usurious embezzlers, blasphemers in league with the Devil, clandestine consumers of roast pork and seducers of Christian virgins. One commenter on the exhibit noted, "For all our own notions of racial awareness at the end of the twentieth century, it comes as a bit of a shock to find that an epoch that regularly vaunted its supposed rationality and common sense still gave succor to so many age-old popular superstitions concerning the Jews. When scholars and social historians look back at the twentieth century with the hindsight of two hundred years, will they view our era with all its atrocities as any less riddled with prejudice than the eighteenth century as we see it? In many respects, the study of this earlier period provides an appropriate paradigm for an understanding of our own age." The prints chosen for this exhibition included works by the major successors of Hogarth, most notably James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson, George Woodward, James Sayers, Isaac Cruikshank and William Heath. Throughout the eighteenth century, caricatures were widely available, being sold in print shops and on the street by itinerant peddlers (including Jewish peddlers as in no. 5). They are the forerunners of the newspaper cartoon in an age when newspapers were unillustrated. It is known that some found their way to North America where similar stereotypical attitudes are loosely represented in contemporary anecdotes about the Jews. Early collectors of caricatures often preserved them by mounting them in albums for their own personal amusement. Later, similar prints were issued in series or album form. By the 1840s, the popularity of such cartoons was to lead to the foundation of Punch, or the London Charivari, a satirical and humorous paper that ran weekly, illustrations and all, until its demise in our own serious (or perhaps "politically correct"!) age of the first half of the 1990s. A beautifully produced companion to this important exhibit. New Condition. $27.00 Please order your copy today! **Please note: We will be closed from 2pm Thursday Feb. 24 until Monday Feb. 28. (JTSAL-1). $25.00 The exhibition described in this book explored the works by and about the Samaritans and the Karaites, two ancient Jewish sects that claim to be the sole legitimate interpreters of the biblical religion. Both groups have survived into the modern period. The Samaritans claim to be descended from the tribes of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, who were not deported by the Assyrians in the eighth century. They do not consider themselves Jews. The Samaritans built their own sanctuary on Mt. Gerizim near Shechem (Nablus) in Samaria, where they still practice animal sacrifice once a year on Passover. Today they number roughly 600 souls, half under Israeli rule in Holon and the other half under Palestinian rule in their ancient center at Nablus. The Karaites are an offshoot of Judaism that arose in the eighth century CE in Iraq in opposition to the Talmud and other rabbinic additions to biblical law. They claimed that the true Jewish religion lay in direct interpretation of Scripture by qualified individuals. From Iraq, the sect spread to Palestine, Egypt, Byzantium, the Crimean peninsula, Poland, and Russia. Today there are Karaite communities in Russia, Lithuania, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and the US. Scripture and Schism brought together a fascinating exhibit of medieval manuscripts, early printed books, broadsides, and other works rarely seen on public display, including medieval letters from the Cairo Genizah. They are reproduced on high quality paper in this beautiful exhibition catalog. [ha-Safran]: New book
Available: THE DYNAMICS OF BECOMING ORTHODOX: DUTCH JEWISH WOMEN RETURNING TO JUDAISM AND HOW THEIR MOTHERS FELT ABOUT IT Dear Friends, We are excited to offer to you the following fascinating study, just published, on the impact of increased religious observance by one generation on its relations with the generation preceding. This particular study looks at changes in generational dynamics in Holland brought about by the increase in ba'a lot teshuvah over the last few decades. Details follow; please submit your orders to us by phone or email. Please note we will be closed this coming Friday and Monday, July 30 & Monday August 2. We will reopen on Tuesday August 3. Many thanks, Dan Wyman THE DYNAMICS OF BECOMING ORTHODOX: DUTCH JEWISH WOMEN RETURNING TO JUDAISM AND HOW THEIR MOTHERS FELT ABOUT IT by Minny E. Mock- Degen. Amsterdam: Amphora Books, 2010 Paperback, 315 pages $50.00 through Aug. 8, 2010 ISBN -EAN 978 90 6446 066 1 The return to Judaism or the teshuvah experience emerged in the mid 1960s when young American Jews became involved in a spiritual search that eventually led them to discover and embrace Orthodox Judaism. It signaled the start of what would become a widespread phenomenon. Within a relatively short period, thousands of Jews in the United States, Israel, Britain, France, the Soviet Union, South Africa, the Netherlands and other countries committed themselves to Orthodox Judaism and became observant. A Jew who returns to Orthodox Judaism is known as a ba'al teshuvah; for a woman the term is ba'alat teshuvah (plural forms: ba'alei and ba'a lot teshuvah respectively). This study of ba'alot teshuvah in the Netherlands is a qualitative and exploratory investigation on how Dutch returnee women and their mothers experienced, perceived and interpreted the return to Orthodox Judaism. In short: How do these returnees and their mothers feel about the religious intensification? In this context the research also pays attention to the ways in which the Dutch returnees became involved with Orthodox Judaism, how they found their religious niche and whether their becoming Orthodox impacted on intergenerational and multigenerational relationships. Minny Evaline Mock-Degen (1945) grew up in the Netherlands, studied cultural anthropology at the University in Amsterdam, and taught at SOSA (Stichting tot Opleiding Sociale Arbeid). In 1985 she emigrated with her family to Israel, where she started volunteering at a hotline for Orthodox woman and participated in a graduate program in clinical sociology at Neve Yerushalayim, under the auspices of the University of Texas. She later joined the research team of a pilot study in Israel which sought to explore how ba'a lot teshuvah (woman returnees) and their secular mothers perceived the religious intensification and how it impacted on family relations. This participation led to undertaking research among Dutch returnees and their mothers which resulted in a doctorate thesis (2006) at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This book is a revised and expanded version of Minny Mock's doctorate thesis. Please order today from Dan Wyman Books. A client has asked for help with the following: "In my research on Saadia, I am using a photocopy of a manuscript of the Torah of Yemenite provenance which contains the Hebrew text of the Torah, in addition to the Aramaic Targum of Onkelos and the Tafsir of Saadia. I am wondering if you might be able to help me to obtain a modern published edition of this work containing all three texts? I believe that Yemenite Jews still recite all three versions and refer to such volumes of the sacred text as al-Taj (meaning crown). I am certain at least one edition must have been published in Israel" Can anyone recommend a title/edition and where I might find a copy? It's my verse adaptation of Fanny Neuda's 19th-century "Stunden der Andacht." The book has been getting some terrific press, as it's the first English translation in over a century. The Forward newspaper calls it a "milestone," one of the "notable firsts . . . in the world of Jewish women." HOURS OF DEVOTION, originally published in German in 1855, was the first Jewish prayer book for all occasions to be written by a woman for women. [ha-Safran]: e films and film strips from 40s & 50s
We are posting this on behalf of Prof. Art Simon; any of you who have copies of these may contact us or Dr. Simon directly at the address below. Thanks, Dan I have begun work on a book about film culture and the fight against domestic anti-Semitism after World War Two up to 1960. As you may know, the American Jewish Committee and the ADL produced a number of pro-tolerance educational films during this period with such titles as Toward Full Integration, A Trumpet for the Combo, Prejudice (1949), The High Wall (1952), and Let Us Break Bread Together (1954).Also, there are two ADL film strips I want: None So Blind and About People, both from 1948..Books or pamphlets dealing with the issue would also be of interest for me. Re: [ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Judaica run time error
Heather-- We ran into this as well; this issue is that the old EJ can't run on computers that have TOO MUCH (!) memory. We came up with this (somewhat complicated) fix: 1. go to RUN on the "start" menu. 2. type in (in capital letters): MSCONFIG 3. click OK. 4. click on the tab "BOOT.INI" 5. under that menu, click on 'advanced options' 6. it'll bring up a little menu. you'll see a number of boxes. click the first one MAXMEM. that should pop up a number in the little box to the right. if this number is higher than 512, you are going to have problems running the program (this is because the EJ is old and for some reason cannot run on computers configured with TOO MUCH memory). 7. delete whatever number you have there and instead type in 512. leave the box clicked. 8. hit OK or CHANGE until you get out of the menus. 9. it will prompt you to restart your computer so that the new memory number can go into effect. do this. 10. when your computer comes on again, it'll notify you that you've changed your memory setting. ignore that. use EJ and it should work fine. 11. important: when you are done with EJ, you'll have to set your computer back to its regular memory setting so that your computer runs smoothly. to do this, you go and do all of the above steps. when you get to step 9, type in your regular memory (mine is 1024) and then UNCLICK the box. then you will be prompted to restart your computer, etc etc..you'll get the message about having reconfigured your memory. check and make sure you're running at your max again. unfortunately you have to do this each time you use EJ because it's such an old program. Re: [ha-Safran]: We have Rare books to donate Addition to
Lydia-- This sounds interesting, but something says scam to me--like interested parties will be asked to send some money to pay for fees to get the books out or something like that...or am I just being paranoid? I googled some of the info and none of it showed up on the scam alert sites, but why wouldn't these folks sell them on ebay or to a Jewish bookshop if they are interested in selling the antique shop? And no last names? Do you know these people? Or did they just "find you on the internet" as the said...how did they find you on the net? Call me mishug, but remember, just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't still all out to get me... Additional Benzion Eisenstadt Title Available
Dear Friends, Thank you for your tremendous response to our most recent offering, Benzion Eisenstadt's Anshe Ha-Shem Be-Artsot Ha-Berit . Many of you asked if we had additional material by Benzion Eisenstadt; in fact, we have several copies of another of his works: Eisenstadt, Benzion (1873-1951). BI-LESHONI MILAH : ...NE'UMIM. BILSHONI MILAH, TWENTY FOUR SERMONS. St. Louis : Moineshter Press, 1934. 1st edition. Paper Wrappers, 8vo, 39 pages. 24 cm. In Hebrew with English Cover/Title Page. Eisenstadt was an American Hebraist, rabbi, and scholar. Eisenstadt was born in Kletsk, Belorussia. In his youth he was attracted to modern Hebrew literature and while in his teens corresponded with Jewish scholars, such as Slonimski and Buber. While still in Russia he published Zioni (Warsaw, 1895; Parts 2-4, Vilna 1899-1902), a biographical dictionary of contemporary rabbis and scholars, and Rabbanei Minsk va-Hakhameha, on the rabbis and scholars of Minsk (Vilna, 1899), as well as Ve-Zot li-Yehudah (1901), annotations on Noda bi-Yehudah, the responsa of Ezekiel Landau. In 1903 he emigrated to the U.S. where, in addition to talmudic works, he continued to publish biographical works on well-known rabbis, scholars and communal leaders. They include Hakhmei Yisrael be-Amerikah (with photographs, 1903), Dorot ha-Aharonim (2 vols., 1913, 1917), Anshei ha-Shem Be-Arzot ha-Brit (1933) and, posthumously Benei Hiyyon (1952)" (EJ). SUBJECT(S): Jewish sermons, American. OCLC lists 4 institutions with copies (Harvard, LOC, NYPL, Penn). Light wear to covers, internally Very Good+ Condition. Nice Copy. $50.00 This is in addition to Anshe Ha-Shem Be-Artsot Ha-Berit which we offered earlier this week: Eisenstadt, Benzion (1873-1951). [ha-Safran]: Haynt: a tsaytung bey yidn, 1908-1939 on the web
Posting this on behalf of Bob Becker. Please contact him at the address below for more information -- I want to tell you about www.haynt.org. This website is about Chaim Finkelstein's book, Haynt: a tsaytung bey yidn, 1908-1939, which contains 31 years of pre-holocaust Jewish-Polish history. It was published only in Yiddish. Chaim Finklestein wanted to translate this book into English, but he died before he accomplished that. His widow, Yadviga, gave permission to reproduce the book and display it on the website, which contains the complete Yiddish book and all the English translated so far. Since last November, over 70% of it has been translated. This is a not for profit project and all translations are in the public domain. I think you'll agree that this is a historical work that deserves attention.
