I e-mailed Gabe Newell and I'm still waiting for Gabe's reply. Been about 2
or 3 days. If still no response, I'll just crop out the CS:CZ content. Which
I've already did. So the sprite will be left with the Galil and FAMAS

And I've sent countless of mails to Valve and none of them were replied.
Really, I'm getting sort of tired e-mailing them. The thought of air-mailing

Uhm, In the space of just under 3 hours I'd sent 4 emails, to three different
people at Valve and gotten responses from all of them.
Erik got bac k to me 7 minutes after emailing him, Chris 33 minutes after
emailing him, and David two hours after that.
Erik has always been very propmt as have the others I've emailed.
If that fails, *gasp* ring them.

Because as far as I know, CS:CZ models, sprites, sounds or anything which

A couple of years ago, I created a player model from one of the "Gunman"

of "Gunman") and they said that I could use their model, as long as it was for
the Half-Life engine only. I don't know if the makers of CS:CZ have this

-workaround (maybe not applicable here)-

maybe other option can be to copy files around in the client comp

something like this:

@echo off
echo You need othermod to play this mod!
echo Install models from othermod
copy othermod/models/burn.mdl mymod/models/burn.mdl
but if the content is hidden at gcf, thats can be other option

@echo off
echo You need othermod to play this mod!
echo Extract models from othermod
extractgcf -f burn.mdl -o mymod/models/burn.mdl
to avoid problems, the mod can be distribute with a fake "burn.mdl", a
768 bytes file with only a unskined polygon

This is my mod's homepage => cl.cscentral.com

Yeah, you would need CS AND HL for this mod to work. All I supply is the
code and a few various stuffs that are self-made or needed to add otherwise
players will complain. Bummer. You all should look in the forums once in a
while. :rolls-eyes:
CS just supply the sprites, models and sounds while HL supply the maps.

Since this is quite a big issue, the only way to use those sprites is to
crop out the CS:CZ content or use a custom sprite to be on the safe side and
avoid stepping on anyone's toes.
Probably that's why people made Photoshop, sprview and sprwiz. :D

"use" yes I believe so, but it sound more like he wanted to distro it with
his mod which would be a no-no since he doesn't own it; but I could have
misinterpreted. Ie if counterstrike being installed was a prerequisite (as
opposed to just hl)there probably would be little issue.

RE: [hlcoders] Need Valve's confirmation

2004-02-20 Thread Napier, Kevin
"use" yes I believe so, but it sound more like he wanted to distro it with
his mod which would be a no-no since he doesn't own it; but I could have
misinterpreted. Ie if counterstrike being installed was a prerequisite (as
opposed to just hl)there probably would be little issue.

You don't know Alfred? I would think that you'd have your agreement with
whomever coded CS:CZ in your office on what you, Valve own and what they
company that made CZ owns. (Since if they made it off contract from Valve
wouldn't you own it?)

Which then wouldn't it follow the SDK agreement that says that mod devs can
use any original code/models/sounds/textures/etc made by Valve? (Like the HD
Pack included with Blueshift which I seem to remember was asked and affirmed
as usable/packageable with external mods)

Ugh- I have a headache now >.<

-workaround (maybe not applicable here)-

maybe other option can be to copy files around in the client comp

something like this:

@echo off
echo You need othermod to play this mod!
echo Install models from othermod
copy othermod/models/burn.mdl mymod/models/burn.mdl
but if the content is hidden at gcf, thats can be other option

@echo off
echo You need othermod to play this mod!
echo Extract models from othermod
extractgcf -f burn.mdl -o mymod/models/burn.mdl
to avoid problems, the mod can be distribute with a fake "burn.mdl", a
768 bytes file with only a unskined polygon

As far as I know, Valve's policy in the past has been...

Any content (sounds, sprites, models, textures, etc) from a Valve owned
MOD are freely allowed to be used by MOD authors as long as the MOD will
run on the Half-Life engine. (i.e. you can't use Valve's copyrighted
content for some non-Half-Life game).
Has Valve's position on this issue changed with Steam and/or Condition
Zero? Some Condition Zero content is probably owned by Ritual (unless
Valve's contract with Ritual stated that Valve owns any content
developed for that game).
I would post a link to the e-mail message that Ken and Eric sent when
this question was raised on the old www.topica.com hlcoder list (where
they stated that using Valve content was okay for MODs running on the
Half-Life engine), but www.topica.com no longer has the "hlcoders" list
archived on their website.

[hlcoders] Need Valve's confirmation

2004-02-20 Thread Tan Theodore
I managed to extract the files within the counter-strike.gcf file. I would
like to use the galil and FAMAS weapon sprite for my mod and so happens that
the two sprites appears to have CS:CZ weapon selection too. If I'm not
mistaken, I think it's 640hud17 and 640hud18.
Question is, am I allow to use it?

Because as far as I know, CS:CZ models, sprites, sounds or anything which
belongs to it are not supposed to be used as it is copyrighted. But I
extracted this file from Steam, owned by Valve. So I would like to double
check.
