Re: [hlds] Max FPS

2011-10-17 Thread Chris Brunelle
This is incorrect. Before this update, even if you were running Windows
2008 with HPET enabled, you still needed to run srcdsfpsbooster or an
equivalent in order to maintain 250fps/500fps/1000fps etc.

 Unreal 3 engine does this
 COD engine does this
Multiple other engines do this as well

Also I believe that even Windows 2008 with HPET enabled in the bios will
have the same effect. Are srcds servers going to run badly if HPET is
enabled or other softwares are installed that cause the high resolution
 timer to be 0.997ms?

the tick/fps is locked at 66. So maybe that will help some of you. I

I too couldn't care less about the raging nerds who try to squeeze the
last bit of performance out of their game, even if it gives them an
unfair advantage over the majority of other players. The game should be
fun and fair for everyone. Believe it or not, I'm still playing with a

highly doubt that anyone would notice any difference in server FPS

Re: [hlds] Server crashes (E. Olsen)

2011-08-15 Thread Chris Brunelle
I had the same issue but with a few CSS servers. I fixed it by adding

Yeah...this is going to be a tough one to track down. I've been on a server
a couple of times that it's happened, and there was no discernible cause,
other than it seemed to happen most often right after a map change while
players were choosing their teams. But again, there was no crash dump, and
no error messages in the logs, so it's all but impossible to put my finger
on the cause. It's happened on both 24 32 player servers, stock and custom
maps, with Sourcemod and without, etc. Server specs are:

 2 x e5620 (dual quad core)
 24 GB ram
 2 x 500GB drives (both defragged daily)
5 TF2 instances per box (and nothing else at the moment - servers stay at
 35% CPU usage or less)

It's more an annoyance than anything elsethe servers are all very
stable (actually, they've been more stable in the last couple of months than
ever before), and almost never crash, with exception of this hang once or
twice per day. Some server will go for days without it occurring, then
they'll have 1-2 hangs on the same day.

Perhaps if there was some kind of verbose logging/debug file we could put
on the server(s) for a couple of weeks that would detail exactly what was
happening during each hang, we could be a bit more helpful to Valve in
 finding the problem?

Ditto, same OS have been seeing this for about 2 months now. Server
instance just freezes and required manual restart. I started eliminating
plugins and double checking SM, using latest stable, about to try latest
snapshot though I tend to prefer to not use snapshots. Did fresh server
installs as well just to cut any junk files that may have been left behind
that are no longer valid for the servers that could cause conflict. Nothing
has been revealed. Most times, again the instance just freezes. Occasionally
it will outright close and rarely do I get an error. Rarely I am blessed
with a dump. Seems to happen every 6 to 12 hrs on servers that have decent
 traffic.
Looking at the dumps doesn't speak to me much. I have seen server.dll
error if I am not mistaking. Hardware has been thoroughly tested and
retested and all appears well on that end.

Dunno, but then I am not proficient with the dump files. My wife gripes at
me cause I can't find the mustard right there in the fridge. Apparently you
have to move stuff out of the way when looking for it.

ABSOLUTELY! Thinking otherwise leads you to the way of Adobe with CS.

You're going to get more people to buy the game at $35 than you are at
$50. You'll easily get enough extra sales to make more money selling
more copies than you would by selling it to less people at $50/ea.

Simple economics, yet most people and business owners don't understand.
It's not like Valve has to spend extra money for each extra copy of the
game sold...they aren't selling physical copies, it's all digital, and
they already have the infrastructure in place to handle the downloads.

Piracy is not defined by your moral outlook on the situation, the CS:S
beta
is copyright Valve and to download it (from their servers or otherwise)
without their permission is illegal. Whether or not illegal downloading
hardly hurts Valve is for Valve to decide, as is who they want to have
access to it. The Subscriber Agreement gives them the right to ban anyone
they like from Steam in any case.

How can an increase in anticipation arise from more people already
having
the game anyway? And if it does make a sale more likely, does giving the
game out for less money help Valve?

be piracy. You can only play on Beta servers if you've purchased a
license
of CS:S, thousands have already downloaded the client and posted videos
online, and legitimate copies of the game will be updated next week. No
 core
gameplay elements have been changed/added, and an increase in
anticipation
hardly hurts Valve (and increases the probability of a week(end) sale to
 celebrate the update).

Analysts? Really? You can' be serious. Retail prices for new games whether
console or pc are the same no matter who the publisher/devloper is. You
can almost go as far as saying it's price fixing at it's best.

Since you've put no lower bounds on your theory, are you asserting that
valve would make more money by selling their games for $0.05 rather than
$30? You have to realize that there are analysts hired to determine the most
appropriate price point based on current and past trends. I would certainly
trust their judgment over yours. While I would love valve games for as
little money as possible, it's not always in their best interest to reduce
the price.

Why are we even talking about this on the HLDS mailing list?

The Subscriber Agreement gives them the right to ban
anyone
they like from Steam in any case.

How can an increase in anticipation arise from more people already
having

For L4D, It was never confirmed whether or not stats uploading was the
timeout issue. I recompiled my plugin for L4D at the request of many,
but valve maintains stats uploading is asynchronous in L4D and hence not
broken. Since they looked into it and fixed it for TF2, I'm guessing

 Agreed.

Neph had a plugin to skip the stats upload during map change (the
supposed
cause to the timeout problem), but he posted on his forum that it was no
longer necessary a while ago because Valve had fixed the problem, however
I
don't believe that to be the case.

I was playing in the last few days and I experienced a 'reconnecting to
server...' message during map change - thankfully it reconnected in time
however before the reconnect counter hit zero.

This problem is *definitely NOT fixed*. Zoid (or anyone from the Valve
team?) are you able to double check this problem is actually fixed, as
myself and others do not believe it is at all.

Pure speculation, but at this stage i imagine valve is hard at working
fixing some of the issues we have already raised regarding the servers and
issues raised on the client side as well.

Some of the configuration options etc are likely to change with the next
update so it may not be feesable for them to document these yet.

A lot of conflicting, incomplete info, in many places.  It should be a

The point is there ARE no answers - from Valve or anyone - for a lot of
 the problems people are having.

My server's running fine now, except for the fact that it somehow loads
a

And there's no way in the gui for people to vote for a map of a

You know from time to time we all need help. I see no reason to flame
 valve
though. The dedicated servers are fairly straight forward, there is a
 lot of
info that can be found in many places about commands etc. All it takes
 is
your time to go look as opposed to having the answers just handed to

 If
this is your first server ever I can understand that it seems daunting
 but
dont be afraid to experiment on the servers, worst case scenario is you

Yesterday we started the preload L4D on Steam. For dedicated servers, you
can also preload most of the content for a server by running
hldsupdatetool and using the game parameter l4d_full. You will not be
able to run a dedicated server until sometime before the official release
though. There will also be at least a 300 MB update on Monday, since we
have not made the maps available for dedicated servers yet.

Once the full game is live, we'll also switch the game parameter to be
left4dead, as that is currently in use for the Demo.

This doesn't work for me. It starts the server, I get console but because
no map is specified it isn't running/allowing connections. When I add +map
mapname to the startup command I get:

While it does say UNLIMITED I'd suspect that in their TOS they have a
clause as to what is acceptable especially being on a 100Mbit port. They
don't mention which providers they use for their network(s) either in either
location, so one has to guess what premium BW they are using.

Are you running 8 x 32 players ORANGEBOX (TF2), CS: Source or a MIX?

So really, fps max is 64...

On that subject I'd be interested to know if many of the Windows admins use
any programs which initialise the multimedia timer? And their
recommendations/suggestons... On my servers I've allways run something to
intitialise it, be it serverchecker or srcdsboost, and try and get fps
around a constant 200 mark across all game serevrs... However with JDoc's
servers and results, I'd be tempted to stop boosting my fps and run more
servers...

I'm not sure why you would use srcdsboost or windows media player if the
 servers are already running fine

nobody complains about lag and nobody complains about low fps on my
 servers
so even if it's possible to boost anything, I wouldn't try

I've used both srcdsboost and wmp for CS:S servers before but I didn't
 notice any dramatic improvement

Very impressive, and to clarify, that's with srcdsboost running? Or
something which initialises the multimedia timer?

ServerChecker does the same thing (if enabled) as srcdsboost i.e.
initialises the multimedia timer within Windows.

I have no need to run srcdsboost or screw with affinity, my servers
 run

Riiight, so you dont actually know about TF2 and the affects of

and
srcdsboost.

Thanks anyway .

 Well, I'm running:

 Serv1:
 Q6600 2.4Ghz
 4GB RAM
 250GB HDD

 Serv2:
 E6700 2.67Ghz
 2GB RAM
 150GB Rpator

Both have 100mbit connection, both being upgraded to 2.66Ghz
 Quads
   end
of
 May...

However, with regard to my first statement, if I set tf2 process
affinity
 to
use a single core, and dont run srcdsboost usage on the core is
   around
35-45%, so I could easily run 2 per core. However, opening up
 srcdsboost
usage rockets to around 80%... Hence my initial doubt, I'd be
 interested
 to
know if JDoc is using srcdsboost?

Anyway, Don, you say it's easy to do... Care to share how?

Uh, I find that hard to believe, unless you are running with
   fps_max
at
 64
  i.e. no srcdsboost...

I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that it'll be the NEXT update after
this one. It will also include the final fix for the uber/medic exploit

:P

I'm sure valve could release server plugins that mask the exploits
just as well as I could - it's very different from actually fixing the
code behind it though. They do need to straighten their testing
process out a bit, but it's not like i'm doing anything on the scale
of what they have to do on their end to properly fix it, so cut them
 some slack.
