[hlds] [Off topic] Just askin' [MCSMP]

2010-08-05 Thread Dominic Marciano

This is defiantly Off topic.
but i'm looking for someone who has a dedicated Australian based server that
Can host Minecraft (that game on the TF2 blog) Survival Multiplayer.as it
stands all hosting is done in between Friends, and has high latency beyond 2
or three people.
We've Contacted Hypernia and asked, but they won't until MC reaches full
release(its in alpha still).

Please note if anyone does decide to do this, that MCSMP is very buggy, and
Notch (creator) is still updating it.
the Software is here:http://minecraft.net/download/Minecraft_Server.exe
the software has the potential to crash itself, and spew errors after running
for more then 24 hours without restart.

This is only me seeing if anyone here would. I'd be prepared to pay for the
server usage.
if you disapprove of this thread or aren't interested, simply don't reply least
you add to it.

A required update for Counter-Strike: Source is now available. The specific
 changes include:

 - Added Steam Clan Tag support ( Set yours in Options-Multiplayer-Advanced
 )
 - Added new achievement CLAN WARFARE: Win a match of at least 10 players
where the entirety of each team is composed of a single clan.
 - All weapon fire rates now tuned to match their pre-update, tickrate 100
 equivalents.
 - Added automatic server tagging for some server convars ( mp_startmoney,
 mp_friendlyfire, bot_quota, sv_nostats, sv_allowminmodels )
 - Fixed some issues for players who were experiencing stat corruption.
 - Fixed several server crash exploits.
 - Fixed server commands sv_disablefreezecam and sv_nowinpanel not
 working on dedicated servers.
 - Adjusted some DX9 shaders to look more like their DX8 counterparts, e.g.
 flashbang effect.
 - Community Requests:
   - Fixed entity I/O messages OnPlayerPickup and OnPlayerUse.
   - Restored UTF-8 support in the console.
   - Added env_hudhint entity, for use in custom maps (The allplayers
flag must be set for the hint to work in Counter-Strike.)
   - Added client convar sv_hudhint_sound to turn off emit sound for
 hud hints.
   - Restored the cl_minmodels client convar.
   - Added server convar sv_allowminmodels that allows them to
 prevent clients from using cl_minmodels.
   - Added a button to Options-Multiplayer that allows players to
 reset their in-game stats.
   - Note: Due to the nature of stats corruption, it is not
possible to automatically fix all types of stats (such as weapon statistics
reflecting usage of the wrong weapon). Players who suspect their stats are
incorrect and wish to start fresh may want to use the new stat reset
 feature.

 I. I have a 1gbps up/down net speed, with a dual e5620 setup, and I decided
to run one, yes one TF2 server on a fresh install of Windows Server 08.

Yes, I am getting lag. I am using the FPS boost pluging, running a 2000 max
FPS server, which averages at close to 1,700 FPS.

I set my rates to be

 sv_maxcmdrate 0
 sv_maxrate 0
 sv_maxreplay 2
 sv_maxupdaterate 100
 sv_mincmdrate 0
 sv_minrate 0
 sv_minupdaterate 30

Basically, with unlimited computing resources allowed... what are the best
 rates?

 Importance: High

We've been seeing a large number of complaints about lag over the last few
days for our TF2 servers and upon investigation it
seems that the update released yesterday morning has caused a MASSIVE CPU
 hike for servers.

Prior to this update our 95th CPU usage on was 39% on cp_orange_x3_t, since
the update this has jumped to 108%, maps seem to be
affected to a different degree to all are seeing an very large increase.

These figures are normalised for a single core on an Intel L5520 so not a
 slow machine by any means.

Here's a few stats graphs which make it very clear:
 http://www.multiplaygameservers.com/dropzone/12609_week-cpu-jump.png
 http://www.multiplaygameservers.com/dropzone/13295_week-cpu-jump.png

This is not a sustainable change, so I hope we can get a fix for this ASAP.

 Regards
 Steve

Re: [hlds] sv_benchmark_force_start TF2 speedhack

2010-07-19 Thread Dominic Marciano

Tested this, it does as he explained.

 From: harry.h...@harry.lu
 To: hlds@list.valvesoftware.com; hlds_li...@list.valvesoftware.com
 Subject: [hlds] sv_benchmark_force_start TF2 speedhack

sv_benchmark_force_start can be used to behave as a speedhack.

 How to reproduce:
 1) Create a local TF2 server.
 2) Type sv_benchmark_force_start in console.
 3) Wait ~10 seconds for a few bots to spawn.
 4) Disconnect.
 5) Join any online server.
 6) Once you go above a certain FPS (~66 in my tests), you will run very fast,
 as if you are speedhacking.

To disable this bug after you have enabled it, you must quit and re-launch
 the TF2 client.
This effects both hldslinux and hldswin (as far as I can tell though, it's a
client-side bug, and there is no way for the server to fix it without a TF2
 client update).
I do not know how this works, but I assume it does something weird with the
threading (other players will be jerky, as if your connection is lagging).

I hope these are the correct lists to send this to? It is not a problem with
the actual HLDS as far as I can see, but it would probably be fitting here...

 Thanks for your time.

Alien Swarm is now freely available on Steam. The dedicated server is
available via the hldsupdatetool as well, using the game name of 'alienswarm'.

I'm surprised more people aren't cranky when people post dumb bullshit
like how fast they are downloading things to the list, when a major
release hits. Nobody wants to read about how fast your are downloading
anything, now or ever. What people do want to discuss is probably the
problems anyone is having running the servers for Alien Swarm since
there seems to be some issues.

You know, server administration related type problems.

Hi Lane, you are right, my machine is connected to the internet via
the router. I tried your options, but frankly i am not that aware
about configuring the router. But the good news is that i finally got
it working. here is the solution how i did it.

 a. I downloaded the tool HldsUpdateTool.exe and installed it in my
machine, then i opened the command prompt set the path to the
directory where i have installed the HldsUpdateTool.

 b. Once this was done, i used the following command :
D:\HLDS\HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game czero -dir D:\HLDS

 c. This downloaded around 380MB of files related to the Counter Strike
Condition Zero game and it also downloaded the HLDS.exe application.

 d. I started the application and set the network as Internet and
 started the server successfully.

 e. I launched the game from the same machine and in my favorites it
had already listed the server the hosted, and i was able to join and
 play the game.

 f. Interestingly, it still showed my home network IP, i asked my
friends to see if they can join the game, they too had got the server
listed, and since it was showing my home network IP, they weren't able
 to join the game.

 g. I went to the site whatismyip.com to get my external IP and asked
my friends to connect to the game using the console method(pressing ~
and using the command connect ip:port) and it worked.. :)

But i had also missed the port forwarding which you had mentioned.

 Thanks for the inputs.

Fix? - That is how it is supposed to work.

SourceTV makes one more slot for itself to connect to the server. I am
guessing your host only allows you to have a certain slot count and this is
causing an issue? Set the server slot count via the server.cfg to one less
 and you will be set.

It carries Valves support for hopefully plugging holes in what was a

This brings me to one observation that I have seen since CSS going OB.
We run our servers as secure as possible, file perms set to a diff

pure list kept tight and whatever sm/mm plugins are available to keep

   the

servers safe. We have a good group of active admins with experience to

   dodgy players BUT
Since last night we have seen a huge amount of players join then
   disconnect,
maybe they have bad ping, maybe they don't like that pure list

   disabling

skins but I have the feeling that nobody realised how many hackers

   there

   were out there.
We used to ban maybe 2 to 5 players a day with the old engine over 3
   servers
   with dodgy/obvious hacks.
Today we have banned 1 in 24hrs.
I know they will eventually script there sad lives back into cheating

   but

for now it's just a slice of heaven.
So for the first time in my life I commend valve on bring CSS up to

   date

making it a viable game that will have more attention the same as TF2
   L4D2.
As for gaming as a client I'm now 37 and past my sell by date for all

 Just example from my client:
On full 32/32 server with real players I have ~100 FPS.
On full 32/32 with bots I have ~10 fps.
So yes, if your hardware can handle 10 32-slot server with bots, it will be
able to handle 10 32-slot servers with real players.
However, real players consume bandwidth, but gigabit LAN should be enough.

 2010/6/18 Josh Bost dislexs...@dislexsick.com

  Hi All,

I'm preparing a server to be used at a local LAN party next month, the
server is pretty much enterprise specs (Dell PowerEdge 2950 - Intel
  Xeon 5365, 16GB RAM, 6x146GB 15K RPM SAS drives in RAID-5) and I plan
to have several game servers running at once. I want to figure out
how many source servers I could run at once (Until now all my TF2
servers have been through GSPs), and so I made a little benchmark - a
32 man server, but since I can't populate that on my NAT'd (stupid
landlord, fml) ADSL2 connection I decided to stick 32 bots in it,
since I assume the AI would use just as many CPU cycles as a real
  player.

  Anyway, onto the questions:
Has anybody tried this before? Does the benchmark given by running
bots translate easily into real world performance (Even if it is
something like take the CPU usage and multiply it by 1.5 to get an
approximation of how much a real player would use, etc)?

I am only interested in CPU here, as that is the weak point of the
system (Allocating 500MB RAM to each server would give me 30 servers +
1GB RAM to the Host OS, and there is no way I would need that much -
Similarly the RAID-5 Setup gives my 180-250MB/sec read speeds on the
HDD - Dual Gigabit NICs will do just fine for a LAN party)

Alternatively, is anybody using a similar setup and could give me some
benchmarks for usage running TF2 (or L4D2, though it will only be
running one or two L4D2) servers?

  Cheers,

  Joshua 'Dislexsick' Bost

Subject: Re: [hlds] Black Listed / De-listed Servers‏

Is there anyway to tell what servers have been de-listed? Our
communities server is not showing up in the master server list, had more
then a couple people check it and they confirmed that it does not show
  up.

I don't want to spam an IP on here so if you want to know the
   IP so you
can check for your self look at our community page

  http://steamcommunity.com/groups/LostBrotherhood

I read that they manually de-list low quality servers from the list. I
want to know what qualifies as a low quality server because we pay a good
  amount of money from a
very awesome provider and always have people on the server through out the
  day?

  It
really hurts the community when the server doesn't show up on the
master server list, the only way players can find it is if there friends
are playing on it and happen to join. This really limits the amount of
new players that come into the server in any week, and in any community
not having new players is usually a bad thing.

  Any information
  would be awesome, thanks.

Most us are just quiet about it because we know that feeding the troll

console command. Generally, you do not need to manually specify the master
addresses. Additional setmaster commands with other addresses in your
server.cfg will just have your dedicated server trying send updates to
non-existent masters. Servers that restart will automatically detect this
new master server and use it appropriately. There are only three currently
  active HL2 Master servers:

I believe they are updating just for releasing it on the Mac (one engine is
 easier and cheaper to maintain).
css players didn't ask this kind of update, they want the same old shit: CSS
on OB won't feel right for a lot of them.
This update has very little value for existing players, and will be a
 nightmare for server admins.
Most of the existing exploits are already fixed using community provided
 plugins and workaround.
The fact it is free doesn't mean it is good and something we should thank
 for.

 Subject: [hlds] A Proposal

I have noticed that a lot of server admins here are somewhat displeased
with Valve's lax approach to some of the more recent server exploits.
While this may be hogwash, I think it might be due to Valve not being
able to replicate the the bugs. I also have noticed that debugging
srcds is not very fruitful for us since we don't have a special debug
 version of srcds.

Thus, I propose that Valve starts a few honeypot servers, that get
regular traffic. These honeypot servers would allow Valve to run the
special debug version of srcds so that when crashes and other exploits
occur, they have all the information they need to properly investigate
the bug. I realize this is easier said than done, but it would allow
for Valve to see that said bugs DO in fact exist.

 Just an Idea

How about just allowing plugins for dedicated servers?

Just as a heads up, I'm gonna try to make a client plugin which hooks
SVC_GetCvarValue, and just always responds with the default CVar value. This
renders any server-side cheat detection (like KAC) completely useless.
Hopefully releasing it as a POC will force VALVe to do something (why does
it always have to come to this?)

Since forever, players have been able to load plugins on their clients
letting them get around cheat sensitive variables such as sv_cheats,
allowing them to use r_drawothermodels, mat_wireframe, etc. We as server
admins have had the option to install various anti cheat addons (Kigen

get around these quite severe downfalls in the engine. However now, there
   is
a LUA scripting interface http://www.3rdera.com/ that has been
  written,
and is now fully supporting engine exploits in order to cause trouble for
server admins and for other players. No one can justify it's use, every
single script written has been made to get around server settings and
protections put in place to keep order, and to keep the game fluently
   moving
along. Right now, players cannot be VAC banned for using this, it's also
going against every single reason why VAC was created. Instead of
  battling
these antics with these scripters, I'm begging you Valve to please remove

Only thing I can think of is seeing if the srcds console has some sort
of scripting (as in, seta var value, inc var e.t.c).

Otherwise I'm sure there's a server-side SM plugin that does what you
 want :)

  tv_record /path/to/demo/test.dem

It worked, and the demo got recorded to the folder with the name
test.dem. I want to use this as an alias, as my customers shouldn't
write all that stuff. I simply want them to write recordfilename
and make it record it to /path/to/demo/filename.dem . I have
therefore tried to make an alias which says:

  alias record tv_record /path/to/demo/

I then tried to do record test.dem, but it recorded to /path/to/
demo/.dem (without any filename). How can i make the alias include the
  filename?

[hlds] [OT?] What is this list to you Really?

2010-02-22 Thread Dominic Marciano

I'd like to ask a pretty frank question.

What exactly is this list to you?
and what do you think should be on it?
and what is relevant to it (HLDS)?

Hopefully we can come to some kind or agreement on what is and isn't
appropriate for this List.

This list is a resource relating to hlds/srcds administration,
primarily. It's secondary purpose would be discussion of related
material. Common Sense would dictate what is and isn't appropriate for
this list. Here's an example, this thread isn't appropriate.

 *xfactorservers.com *
They were a good hosting I used them before they seem to have good tech
support hardly any downtime. Derek one of the owners is always around
and willing to help. He still helps me know whenever I have issues with
something on TCAdmin and I don't even colo or rent servers with them
anymore not because of issues with them.

 *Nuclearfallout.net*
I think NFO lost all their good techs Main one started
ultimategameserver.com as I remember an issue I had with them with a
server I had purchased for some reason their hosting routed me to
Washington State then back to Chicago from Michigan and they told me
that wasn't a big deal and they weren't going to fix it.

 *gameservers.com *
I have used them for 4 yrs. I use to host around 15 servers with them I
am now down to 3 server with them. I understand why people hate them
aswell I cannot say I haven't had days where I have wanted to hurt
someone there if Tellz Worm are reading this you know who just be
kind personally I have never had issue of lag besides when the server
box was being attacked. Their response time is slow but do you want a
quick response or the right one. With that said I think they need to
 hire a couple more techs.

 I would personally use xfactorservers.com or gameservers.com

As for the site gspreport.com they don't really guard against spamming.
Any GS employee or owner can make up all the reviews to boost their
ratings. To prove my point about this site
http://gspreport.com/reviews/GameServers check out CockToe CockToes he
 is awesome.

In closing all hosting companies have downtime and bad techs you are
just going to have to pick one and hop they work for you.

never had a single performance issue with leet. It seems to be a small
team working over there, but they do a great job. I've currently got 19
servers from him, with 6 BC2 servers on the way.

I won't say much about gameservers. They can offer you low low prices,
but at the expense of performance. I think it's just matter of them
overloading their boxes. Sometimes we'd get good performance, but other
  times it'd be bad.

As for artofwarcentral... oh god... I'm going to post the book of a
testimonial I wrote to them and posted on their forums in the
testimonial section. Needless to say it was deleted within an hour.
That pissed me right the fuck off, so I'm happy sharing it with
everyone who wants to read it.

I'd like to give my testimonial. Now this isn't a rant. I've had 2
dedicated servers with Art of War Central for 1 year. I've taken
everything that's happened over the last year into consideration when
writing this. And please note, I have never actually rented a single
game server from Aowc, only dedicated servers.

So where do I start... ah yes, lets start with their tech support.

When it comes to support, Aowc is absolutely lacking. What I've
gathered is that when it comes to dedicated servers, Art Of War Central
does not actually have any more control over things than the customer
does. When you submit a ticket to Aowc, it appears that they then
contact the datacenter somehow (call? submit a ticket of their own?)
and have whoever is working at that particular datacenter fix the
problem. What is the need for the middle man? Why am I paying Aowc?
When there is an issue with our servers, I like to know what happened.
Oh it's fixed now sorry doesn't cut it for me. When I ask what the
problem was, I get a response such as I do not know, the datacenter
fixed it they didn't give me a description. This is pretty poor
communication. The datacenter should relay what the issue was back to
Aowc and Aowc should be able to supply me with a cause when I request.
To give them credit, they were able to get our first box rebuilt
because it was giving us so many issues. Unfortunately, when we got
that server up, we went from 6 Ips to 1 Ip, and they were trying to
charge us to get them back. After it reached management they just gave
them back to us. Like I mentioned before, it seems as though they lease
their equipment, so when a customer contacts the Aowc tech support, the
Aowc tech support has to contact the dacacenter tech support. There's a
lot of room for error there.

While still on the subject of poor support, lets talk about the lag
and what kind of responses I get when bringing it up

I've tried very hard to ignore this whole, stupid thread. And I really do
not want to contribute to its length. But I think my contract allows me one
 post per year. :)

One fact remains blatantly obvious to me. There really was NO PROBLEM until
msleeper posted his usual sarcastic comment and how is this pertinent to
this list? (I'm paraphrasing his original e-mail.) Granted, perhaps the
topic of discussion didn't exactly fit the guidelines perfectly, but so
what? I was learning something by reading and it was far more interesting
than the subsequent bickering that has ensued. I submit that if msleeper
had not tried to play mailing list police, like he always does, the topic
would have ended quickly and no one would be terribly upset. I doubt very
much anyone would have left the mailing list just because they had to
endure a few more e-mail exchanges between people that were helping each
other. It really wasn't a big deal!

Msleeper, can you please just learn to ignore threads that you're not
interested in, instead of always trying to moderate the mailing list? Your
constant critiques of whether or not a post meets your approval do more harm
than good. Life goes on just fine, even if someone happens to stray a
little off topic. Please just keep your keen off topic observations to
yourself. Until this list has a true moderator with clear editing
instructions, this list is simply not going to be perfect. Please stop
pointing out to the whole group every time it isn't perfect.

 Sincerely,

 X-ray Doc

No, it's a real exploit caused by the client loading it's own
sourcemod with full privileges in a listen server, then staying in the
engine when you connect to another server. You can't do anything to
other clients obviously, but you can change restricted CVars. Easily
blockable using zBlock or an equiv.

Stop feeind useless shit into these lists. This benefits no one. Don't you
people have anything better to do? I know, you don't but still keep the
 discussion constructive and civil. Thanks.
