FPS is measured by syscalls. Because of context switching, interrupt

overhead, syscall latency, and scheduler latency, you'll always have

 jitter.

Also, running it over the tickrate is pretty much useless, so as long

as it's 1:1 or a little bit above the tickrate you should be fine.

[hlds] Achievements not showing properly , CS:S

2010-08-12 Thread Jake Eisenman
Hey all,
I have noticed this on my account as well as some of the people on my
server.
When there is an achievement where you must do X action Y times (i.e.
win 200 rounds), the percentage of rounds you have one is lower than it
should be. A perfect example is the one where I have the achievement
Pro-Moted (win 200 rounds) but under Leet-er Of Men (win 5k rounds),
it only shows me as having won 83. This has been happening for the past
few days.

Any news?

Thanks,

A required update for Killing Floor has been released. All servers will need
to be updated to maintain compatibility with clients and to appear in the
server browser. This is a bug fix update only, and is not the planned free
content pack that we are working on and will be releasing in the not too
 distance future.

 Killing Floor Update Changelog

 - Fixed clients hanging during map change

 - Fixed an exploit found in the Perks system

 - Fixed a glitch and memory leak in the Audio system

 - Fixed downloaded files in the Cache folder causing Perks to disable

 Mac Specific Fixes:

 - Audio effects should be more correct (footsteps should be audible,

player's own gunshots should be louder, etc).

 - Fixed MP7 Shoot sound not working properly

 - Dedicated server should work now.

 - Motion blur, windowed mode, and crossbow scope should work on all ATI

 GPUs, now.

 - No longer forces crossbow scope to Textured mode at startup.

 - Other minor fixes.

 Cheers,

 UI:
 - Added the following cvars to allow players to customize their
 scoreboards.
 - cl_scoreboard_ct_color_red
 - cl_scoreboard_ct_color_green
 - cl_scoreboard_ct_color_blue
 - cl_scoreboard_t_color_red
 - cl_scoreboard_t_color_green
 - cl_scoreboard_t_color_blue
 - cl_scoreboard_dead_color_red
 - cl_scoreboard_dead_color_green
 - cl_scoreboard_dead_color_blue
 - Changed the screen that appears when the message of the day fails
to load to display proper error text.
 - Made the CT silhouette for the auto-select option in the Choose a
Class screen smaller and corrected its aspect ratio.
 - Addressed a problem that occasionally caused characters to be
colored incorrectly on the Change a Class screen.

 Gameplay:
 - Made ladders easier to climb. Added cvars sv_ladder_dampen and
 sv_ladder_angle.
 - Fixed issue that awarded three points when the bomb explodes after
the round ends by elimination criteria instead.
 - Fixed issue in which you weren't given credit for grenade damage
if you fired a weapon at someone then hit them with a grenade (in
that order). Also fixed problem in which grenading a player and then
killing them with another weapon showed as '*** in 1' on console.
 - There's now a priority order for displaying win conditions when
 multiple win conditions are set.
 - If timelimit exists and is not 0, then show timelimit.
 - If timelimit does not exist, show maxrounds if not 0.
 - If both timelimit and maxrounds are 0, show winlimit.
 - If timelimit, maxrounds, and winlimit are all 0, show nothing.
 - Added a cvar to ignore win conditions:
 mp_ignore_round_win_conditions.

 General:
 - Disallowed the use of arbitrary command strings for the message of
the day screen. Now only a specific list of commands is allowed.
 - Addressed issue in which AWPs and Scouts sometimes did not make
 the zooming sound.
 - cvar mat_showlowresimage is now a cheat command.
 - Many development console commands which would crash the server
 removed.
 - Updated source engine addresses many issues:
 - Better flashlight effect
 - Better HDR behavior
 - Multicore rendering support
 - Added sv_disablefreezecam cvar to turn off the freezecam on a
 server.
 - Added sv_nonemesis cvar to turn off domination/revenge on a server.
 - Added sv_nomvp cvar to turn off MVP stars on a server.
 - Added sv_nostats cvar to turn off stats on a server.
 - Removed -tickrate command line option and defaulted tick rate to
66 rather than 33. This addressed a number of issues, including:
- Tick rate affecting how fast doors open / close
- Tick rate causing players hitting the ground to stutter
- Tick rate affecting the firing mechanisms of certain guns

I said I'd send a reminder about this a few times a year, so that new admins

 ---
Sometimes, admins may have small questions not necessary for the mailing
list, want to have a dialogue with other admins real-time, or simply want to
discuss various topics they don't feel worthy for the mailing lists. I was
thinking to myself earlier today that while it's been mentioned from time to
time in other topics that there's a HLDS/SRCDS support channel, there's
never been a thread dedicated to it to tell all server admins on both Win
and Nix that it exists. Therefore, I'd like to officially declare that there
 is such a channel!

It's located on *GameSurge at #hlserveradmins *and is run by myself (Atreus)
and nephyrin. While it's not currently super active, generally questions
people have are answered and will definitely become more popular if more
administrators, both those with questions and those with answers, were to
join. Take note I'm not advertising this in the common sense. Rather, I'm
hoping to help -- I personally gain nothing from the channel filling further
other than to see it flourish and people have an easier time getting their
 questions answered.

For those who are skimming or using plaintext, and unable to see the bolded
 info above, it's:
 *#hlserveradmins @ irc.gamesurge.net*

Feel free to join and enjoy :)

For IRC newbies, here's some recommended clients for...

 - Windows: *mIRC* or XChat
 - OSX: *Linkinus*, XChat Aqua, or Colloquy
 - Linux: Haven't used IRC on nix, but I've heard good things about:
 XChat, BitchX, issri
 - Firefox Users: ChatZilla

My clients of choice are bolded, as I use Windows on my PC and OSX on my MBP
Laptop. I'm sure others have recommendations, as can be seen the last time
 the channel was mentioned. Toodles!

 -Atreus

Note: Offtopic chat is fine when technical issues are not actively being
discussed, but being purposely disruptive or rude and disrespectful to
others will result in a warning/kick/ban from the channel depending on the
severity of the offense. It's hard to get on my or Neph's bad side, but I
 figured I should mention such.

 Notification

I said I'd send a reminder about this a few times a year, so that new
 admins
and what not could notice it! So, here is said reminder :) Below is the
 same
message as the last time it was sent
 ---
Sometimes, admins may have small questions not necessary for the mailing
list, want to have a dialogue with other admins real-time, or simply want
 to
discuss various topics they don't feel worthy for the mailing lists. I was
thinking to myself earlier today that while it's been mentioned from time
 to
time in other topics that there's a HLDS/SRCDS support channel, there's
never been a thread dedicated to it to tell all server admins on both Win
and Nix that it exists. Therefore, I'd like to officially declare that
 there
 is such a channel!

It's located on *GameSurge at #hlserveradmins *and is run by myself
 (Atreus)
and nephyrin. While it's not currently super active, generally questions
people have are answered and will definitely become more popular if more
administrators, both those with questions and those with answers, were to
join. Take note I'm not advertising this in the common sense. Rather,
 I'm
hoping to help -- I personally gain nothing from the channel filling
 further
other than to see it flourish and people have an easier time getting their
 questions answered.

For those who are skimming or using plaintext, and unable to see the
 bolded
 info above, it's:
 *#hlserveradmins @ irc.gamesurge.net*

Feel free to join and enjoy :)

For IRC newbies, here's some recommended clients for...

   - Windows: *mIRC* or XChat
   - OSX: *Linkinus*, XChat Aqua, or Colloquy
   - Linux: Haven't used IRC on nix, but I've heard good things about:
   XChat, BitchX, issri
   - Firefox Users: ChatZilla

My clients of choice are bolded, as I use Windows on my PC and OSX on my
 MBP

If you have an Android device, enter the market and search for Source
Server Manager - it's a free application by a Mr. Matthew
 Livingstone
that gives you the ability to remotely issue commands to Source
 servers.

Between using email apps to watch for the update emails Jason sends
 to this
list and using the Source Manager app to send commands remotely, you
 never
have to worry about being near a computer in case of updates.

(Of course, depending on where your server is hosted, you can also
 just use
a smart device browser to access web management tools. I know the
 Android
2.1 browser allows me full access to the NFO control panel, for
 example.)

 less money help Valve?

ABSOLUTELY! Thinking otherwise leads you to the way of Adobe with CS.

You're going to get more people to buy the game at $35 than you are
 at
$50. You'll easily get enough extra sales to make more money selling
more copies than you would by selling it to less people at $50/ea.

Simple economics, yet most people and business owners don't
 understand.
It's not like Valve has to spend extra money for each extra copy of
 the
game sold...they aren't selling physical copies, it's all digital,
 and
they already have the infrastructure in place to handle the
 downloads.

Piracy is not defined by your moral outlook on the situation, the
 CS:S beta
is copyright Valve and to download it (from their servers or
 otherwise)
without their permission is illegal. Whether or not illegal
 downloading
hardly hurts Valve is for Valve to decide, as is who they want
 to have
access to it. The Subscriber Agreement gives them the right to ban
 anyone
they like from Steam in any case.

How can an increase in anticipation arise from more people
 already having
the game anyway? And if it does make a sale more likely, does
 giving the
game out for less money help Valve?

If it were a paid DLC and none of the public had access, then
 yes, it
 would
be piracy. You can only play on Beta servers if you've purchased
 a license
of CS:S, thousands have already downloaded the client and posted
 videos
online, and legitimate copies of the game will be updated next
 week. No
 core
gameplay elements have been changed/added, and an increase in
 anticipation
hardly hurts Valve (and increases the probability of a week(end)
 sale to
 celebrate the update).

How much bandwidth a month? I didnt say it would be cheap, if people helped
pay for it though it could work. Adding IPs works just as well.

Running your own content server is a significant investment not just in
hardware (thats the small part really), but also bandwidth as they can
use extreme amounts. Our two in Australia (that aren't filtered
currently) do a combined peak of well over 1.5Gbit of traffic, lately a
lot more than that (one of them is running at around 900Mbit right now,
the other one not far behind that).

A lot of bugs and issues I've encountered I already knew about by reading
this list. Often within no-time there are workarounds published which could
be implemented. Also often stuff just holds value to get new ideas for your
own servers etc. Also the social effect, you get help, you help some. With
all this spam and nonsense, the you help some part becomes very unattractive
as you just can't be bothered anymore.

If you're renting a dedicated server from someone, generally the

are the same for windows and linux, so there's no obvious plus or

If you want to be able to automate everything without having to buy
extra software and you have the ability to write simple shell scripts,
 then plus for linux.

If you have piles of money laying around and either don't have a clue
how to write shell scripts, or are too lazy to bother, then +1 for
 windows.

If you are running source games, then you are going to have to use
D-FENS to help protect against file upload exploits. Most source
engines have a version of D-FENS on windows and linux, but on linux
there is no plugin compiled for Left4Dead2, so you have to actually
 know
what you're doing when it comes to locking down the filesystem and
running the servers as unprivileged users. I spent a couple of hours
working out a script to remove write access from the user directory my
l4d2 server runs as so that when the server is running, nothing can be
written by that server except for logs, spray files, and sourcemod
gamedata, and it runs as part of the startup script for the server.
When the server is shut down, everything becomes user-writeable
 again so
that the server can be updated. It wouldn't have taken nearly as much
time if I hadn't had to have a bunch of documentation up so that I
 knew
what I was doing, so an experienced shell-scripter probably could have
easily knocked it out in a few minutes.

Source engine games are basically not optimized for linux, but they
 are
mildly optimized for windows. Depending on how many servers you are
trying to run on one box, this could become an issue.

FTP is always a giant pain in the ass to secure properly, and since I
have no idea how to do that, linux+ssh+scp for file transfers allows
 me
to have an inherently secure method for transferring files to and from
my server so long as the user passwords aren't easily attackable. Not
sure how you would do this on windows.

If you are trying to run anything other than game servers, more
 stuff is
available for linux that is secure and free. Again, it goes back to
 money.

Our clan runs a windows server 2k3 box that we rent from a GSP for 7
 of
our 8 servers. I have never had a huge amount of trouble using it or
tweaking it, other than some issues with automatic updates and remote
desktop. I have my own personal linux server that I run a l4d2 server
for the clan on, also. Likewise, I have had little to no issues with
it. It runs linux because I am familiar with it, because it's free (I
already pay enough for the colocation without having to pay for
 windows
and everything else), and because I am running a zimbra server on it,
 which isn't available for windows.

So, basically, it's all about what you're comfortable with, what you
plan on using it for, and what you can afford.

2010-02-19 Thread Jake Eisenman
I've never had problems with ArtofWarCentral, they always answered my
questions pretty fast (20 minutes with a few exceptions). Server starts
to lag like once or twice a year, put in a ticket, solved.

arreo...@gmail.com wrote:
Had horrible experiences with ArtofWar's customer service. I would highly
recommend against them. Slow, unable to do simple things to fix the servers
in a timely manner. Left them and haven't looked back.

Just keep in mind you always get what you pay for. If it looks too good to
be true, then 99% of the time it is. Don't skimp on a few extra bucks
because you'll only regret it latter when you find out the GSP has oversold
the bandwidth on your underpowered shared server box.

Re: [hlds] Clients timing out

2010-02-17 Thread Jake Eisenman
Clientregistry.blob seems to fix everything.

lord.matt.hoff...@gmail.com wrote:

I didn't have to register but whatever: Copy/Paste for you, I

Some of you may have had the error *Error Verifying STEAM Ticket*
 when
trying to join a CS: Source or TF2 server. Others are
 getting*Client Timed
Out: Disconnected*If you have, you know how frustrating it can be.

The problem you're having is not related to the game server or your
software. This is a STEAM client issue related to a STEAM server
connectivity problem. More than likely the main STEAM server you
 connected
to when your STEAM client first logged on has gone down, is updating
 or is
extremely busy. This often occurs when STEAM Releases Game updates.
Basically the game server is saying that it can't confirm you're a
legitimate CS: Source licensee because it can't talk to the STEAM
 authentication server consistently.

There are two things you can do that will likely to fix it.

OPTION 1: The first is try logging off and then back into STEAM
 (this is not
 the same as restarting STEAM)

To logout and back in to STEAM, do the following:

 1. Make sure you remember you're password. (Your username should be
 saved in
the login screen after you logoff)
 2. Right-click on the STEAM icon on the lower right corner of your
 screen
 and select Games
 3. Select File
 4. Select Change user
 5. A message will come up saying this will log you out of STEAM.
 6. Click Ok
 7. Re-enter your username and password.
 8. Log in.

This will disconnect you from the STEAM Authentication server that
 won't
validate your STEAM tickets and then log you into a new validation
 server.
It usually works the first time, but if not, log out and back in
 using the
above process and see if it will let you back in. Often times just
 waiting a
few minutes will allow the STEAM authentication server to catch up
 and it
will start working again without you doing anything at all.

If this doesn't work, the next way will.

OPTION 2: Delete and automatically re-create the ClientRegistry.blob

To delete and automatically re-create the ClientRegistry.blob file,
 do the
 following

 1. Close STEAM down.
 2. Navigate to the following folder:
 - On Windows XP: c:\program files\steam
 - On Windows Vista and Windows 7: c:\program files(x86)\steam
 3. Delete the ClientRegistry.blob file from the above folder and
 close the
 explorer
 4. Restart STEAM. This will cause STEAM to check for an update and
automatically create a new ClientRegistry.blob file.
 5. Go play your game.

 Good luck!

[hlds] Ban IP Ranges

2010-01-05 Thread Jake Eisenman
Is this possible by adding like 12.34.*.* to banned_ip.cfg? Or is there
some external plugin for this? The reason I ask is because a hacker

that IP range so we can afford to ban it.
