Well I am someone who happens to be VAC banned on the HL1 engine, on the
same account I keep all my Source engine games no less. FYI, I have
never used hacks, so if you're going to ban me from your dedicated
servers (which I probably won't even notice or care) you should at least
know your logic is bullshit.

Re: [hlds] TF2 Hacker

2008-11-21 Thread Donnie Newlove
Being VAC banned is not proven guilty?

Use performance-enhancing drugs to cheat in sports and you might not
be allowed to participate in any games or competitions for many years
or never again at all in your life. This is because a person with a
cheating mentality will cheat when given the opportunity. Cheating
takes away the challenge in playing games and leaves only a will to
win at the cost of fairness and fun.

Of course professional sports for medals, money and recognition and
public network games for fun are very different, but if you used drugs
to beat your friends in a just for fun football game then you will
lose a lot of friends. But no one would do that. You might however
cheat online if you got that mentality because it's easy to get away
with and it's hard to get caught in the first place, so any step that
makes getting caught cheating online having a bigger impact on the
cheater and therefore making cheating online less attractive is a step
in the right direction.

It does not matter if you were teenager when you cheated, I was a
teenager not too long ago and I never cheated or committed crimes that
would hurt or affect another person negatively. A teenager's brain is
not fully developed, but if you believe that a teenager cannot think
straight enough to understand crime and punishment, right and wrong,
choice and consequence then maybe teenagers should not be playing
violent video games in which you kill other people the first place.
But they do, and they can without going on killing sprees, so blaming
your bad choices on being a teenager, now that is bullshit and it will
not give you an online get out of jail free card.

I have a VAC ban on my record (hl1).I am not a hacker.
Banning me because I'm banned on a different system would be unjustified,
and accomplish absolutely nothing other than having 1 less player on your
server.

Like someone said, if you want to stop hackers from playing on your servers,
either catch them in the act or let VAC do its thing because there's no way
you'll ever know otherwise.

Re: [hlds] TF2 Hacker

2008-11-21 Thread Leonard L. Church
By your logic, if someone robs a bank and goes to prison, then they
should get life as it's impossible to change.

Or if you get caught with pot or push someone or anything that can land
you in jail for a few months or so (contempt of court even), they should
never be let loose since they will just do it again.

That is the logic I see you presenting. I think (and thankfully, society
agrees with me) that you are using flawed logic. Either that or I'm not
understanding your point of view.

Re: [hlds] TF2 Hacker

2008-11-21 Thread Dustin Wyatt
That is not my line of reasoning at all. Could you please point out
where I addressed the length of bans?

I merely said that cross-game banning would be a greater deterrent
than single game banning. If it was technically feasible, I could
fully support a system that allowed for bans to be time-limited
dependent on mitigating factors like the age of the person when he
first cheated.

Additionally, your analogies are appeals to emotion as there is little
similarity between cheating and being banned in a video game and
taking away someones freedom to move (prison).

If we're going to use such analogies yours still don't hold. Since
we're talking about cross-domain and not length of punishment, a more
appropriate analogy would be this: How much of a deterrent would
prison be if you could commit a crime and then go to the neighboring
town and not have to worry about prison time?

Or if you get caught with pot or push someone or anything that can land

never be let loose since they will just do it again.

That is the logic I see you presenting. I think (and thankfully, society
agrees with me) that you are using flawed logic. Either that or I'm not
 understanding your point of view.

The logic does hold, the VAC ban is only 1 year, so if you rob a bank you
are sent to jail for some amount of time. Durring that time you are

Now to address Scott, how did you get HL1 VAC banned if you didn't use a

It doesn't ban you from your games. Just from playing on secure servers. The
old argument goes that Valve gave them a chance, banned cheaters for a year,
that didn't work so they increased it further.. then permanent.

The length of the bans does not matter because cheaters are never
banned, only their account is. It's like taking the robbers shotgun
away and put it in jail for a year, five years or forever, it does not
matter, because the robber is still free and will just buy or steal a
new shotgun. Next day he is back in business.

Re: [hlds] TF2 Hacker

2008-11-21 Thread Blood Letter

Yeah, but your analogy falls apart.
Cheaters don't get money from cheating, so having to buy a new copy of a game
is a deterrent.
Stealing accounts can get you into serious trouble, and the more often you have
to do it, the more likely you are to get caught.

VAC and sv_pure go a long way to keep the cheaters out.
Good communication with other admins can fill the gaps quite well.

I honestly don't think there's a better way to handle it, and I've never seen
VAC give out a false positive.
And if it does, just email Valve. Odds are others have had the issue, and odds
are Valve wants to rectify it.

In the end, neither I nor most of the other admins care what the hell you
all say. We'll do what we want with our servers. I will definitely think
about implementing this vac ban plugin as long as it has a white-list. If
someone bothers to post on my site saying they were banned but would like
another chance then that might be enough to give them one. Or I might not
just bother with white lists at all... We'll see.

Indeed. I would have no problem with banning a known COD hacker from CS/TF2
if I knew them to be the same person (though if they were, say, teenage,
this would be up for review after a certain number of years in case they'd
matured ^^)

Re: [hlds] TF2 Hacker

2008-11-19 Thread Blood Letter

I've run into a few hackers running my TF2 server.
We as server operators must work together to get rid of the riff raff.
To accomplish that, we must be willing to trust each other.

Proof is nice, but the moment you put up a video, you'll have people (just
for the hell of it) saying Some people are just that good., LOL, you're just
a noob., U Mad., Could you run these commands and check ..., etc.

The ONLY thing that gets you banned from my servers is hacking (including
exploiting maps and trying to exploit the server).
I find it is best to deal with these people swiftly, and without recourse. I
do not engage them in conversation, nor do I tell them why they were banned.
If I am not sure they are hacking, I observe them. If I'm still not sure, I
assume they aren't. Usually, hackers just hop from server to server causing
shit. It's unlikely I'll see them again, but I do make a note of them in case
others encounter them.

And before the issue is raised - I fully support public display of the hacker's
IP and Steam ID.

This guy was already on my list, but thanks. I hate how one guy can empty
out the place.

Subject: [hlds] TF2 Hacker

So I wanted to play on my server, 18 poeple on it, filling up... so while I
load, this hacker gets on with his aimbot/speed hack as sniper, and
basically makes most people quit, there are only 5 people remaining when I
get in game.

You have no Idea how enraged I was over this, I told him I was giving his ID
to anyone I can find, so here I go.

nicknames: Pitty: like 1000? lol, [COTB]austantacious
Steam Page: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997419331
STEAM_ID: STEAM_0:1:18576801
IP: 24.2.199.151

Please ban this pile of crap from all your servers until vac gets him or
something D:.

2008-11-19 Thread Donnie Newlove
Well, his VAC status does not look good for him so its true that he is
a cheater, but he has probably not been caught by VAC on the Source
engine.

This plugin still does not exist yet, but when it does it will change
that, I'm looking forward to it.
