Antwort: FTP Question

2011-08-10 Thread Michael Klaeschen
David,

- Compressed text is clear text compared to encrypted text. And encryption
software should be ubiquitary; z/OS comes with ftp encryption more or less
out of the box, AT-TLS.

- Success of compression depends on structure of source. Plain text files
like PARMLIB members should give very good compression. Instead, for
tersed files I would not expect much benefit from compression. Sometimes,
compressed files is even larger than original. I think, you have already
found this in your tests. But also, LRECL and RECFM, especially FB vs. VB
as well as conversion of character sets (SBCS vs. DBCS for instance) might
be an important factor, especially when the target system for PUT is not
MVS. Can you confirm this by your tests?

- Speaking of SMF and RMF: compression needs CPU. From my experience,
license charge for software sometimes is related to CPU usage. So take
care: turning on compression in large scale might require to raise your
MSU and you might need to pay more money.I would expect charge for network
traffic to be much less than charge for MSU.

- What quantities are you targeting? Would you agree that sending very
high amount of data over large distance (e.g. moving a TS3500 from
Massachusetts to India) is still more efficient by air-mailing tape
cartridges than using ftp?

Cheers
Michael

Sorry, I forgot to change the subject.

Hello Experts,

I am asking for opinions on the ramifications or value of using the MODE C
(compress) command within generic ZOS batch FTP. I am not a SYSPROG and
do not have full access to SMF and RMF. My brief testing showed 3 to 10
times faster run time when using MODE C before the PUT or GET. I assume
this saves bandwidth and the data is transmitted not in clear text for
those that do not have encryption software. I suspect there is more over
head in TCPIP or some STC. I plan to recommend this to our tech staff
unless there is a major reason not to implement. Also, I tested FTP of a
ps file, a ps-e file, an IBM Terse file and MODE C was the fastest followd
by PS-E then terse.

Re: IOPS benchmark

2011-08-10 Thread Cobe Xu
Hi Alex,

You should combine the DASD response time with I/O rate when you check your
DASD's performance.
And see how is the I/O intensity during your batch window..
On Wed, Aug 10, 2011 at 5:39 AM, Hal Merritt hmerr...@jackhenry.com wrote:

In modern DASD, 3390-3, 3390-9, 3390-whatever are just logical constructs.

More, hopefully most all of the I/O looks like it is directed to a volume,
but actually is satisfied in cache or buffers and never really touches the
 physical disk.

 Subject: IOPS benchmark

 Hi All,

We are now evluating the IOPS for some DASD (3390-3 and 3390-9). Because
the DASD are shared by all LPARs in the sysplex. As per RMF IO activity,
there are a few DASDs which were accessed 2000 per second at a specific
time. We are afraid there may be hotpot problem occur in the near future.

Is there any reference which clearly states the benchmark or thredhold for
the IBM DASD (3390-3 and 3390-9)? The DASD IOPS may be 300 at a specific
time in the sysplex. Is it acceptable or do we need to tune that DASD?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Re: Anyone running cascaded Metro/Global Mirror?

2011-08-10 Thread Gonzalo Cengotita
I'm not sure of understanding properly your question, in the same section
30.2 it says:

The intermediate site disk subsystems are collectively paused by the Global
Mirror Master
disk subsystem to create the Consistency Group (CG) set of updates. This
pause would
normally take 3 ms every 3 to 5 seconds. After the CG set is formed, the
Metro Mirror writes,
from local site (Site A) volumes to intermediate site (Site B) volumes, are
allowed to continue.

So, i think this hypothesis is not true, the IBM solution pauses the
primary disk subsystem and that is enough to have consistency.

My experience in my actual shop is with Global Copy/Global Mirror, and I can
tell you we get Consistency Groups without suspending the Global Copy.

Hope it helps, regards,

Gonzalo Cengotita

We're being told that we are not going to see consistency groups formed on

consistency group formed and can flash to our recovery volumes at the

documentation section 30.2 if I read that correctly. Can anyone confirm
or deny the 'no consistency group while Metro Mirror running', how shall
 we phrase this delicately, hypothesis?

Re: FTP Question

2011-08-10 Thread Chris Mason
David

I assume this saves bandwidth and the data is transmitted not in clear text
 ...

Not true. In effect, data *is* transmitted in clear text.

Quoting Michael Klaeschen

... Compressed text is clear text compared to encrypted text.

while trying to steer you into a proper understanding towards compression
this leans too far in trying to accommodate a comparison since there is almost
no comparison.

Compressed text *is* clear text. It's just that formatting is messed up by
removing blanks and replacing them with a code and strings of the same
character - more than 3 if the compression algorithm is sensible - being
reduced isn't going to impair readability to any significant degree.

From the description of the MOde subcommand—Set the data transfer mode in
z/OS Communications Server IP User’s Guide and Commands:

quote

C

Sets the compressed mode. In compressed mode, data is transmitted as a series
of data blocks, preceded by one or more header bytes. Compressed mode preserves
the logical record boundaries of the data set or file. In compressed mode, data
is transmitted without repetitive characters and blanks. When MOde is set to C,
the data transfer type must be EBCDIC.

Note: Because additional processing time is required for both the sender and
receiver to compress or decompress the data, evaluate the time factor before
you compress a file.

Specifying MOde C is equivalent to specifying the COMpress subcommand.

/quote

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/f1a1b990/5.44

Because compression is such a light-weight process - here a comparison with the
heavy-weight processes compaction or encryption is valid! - it has a very small
overhead. It causes a major reduction on the volume of data to be moved when
the data consists of reports with a lot of white space - let's just say blank
characters - and maybe lots of fancy lines of asterisks or maybe just hyphens
to assist with the presentation of arithmetical calculations - that sort of
thing.

You would be stark, raving to consider compressing anything other than text.
Text-rich text, a novel for example, would also be getting close to pointless.
As for tersed data - perish the thought!

-

Incidentally, I expect Michael's ubiquitary should be ubiquitous.

You should also note that certain geographies do tend to put perhaps a bit
more emphasis on security matters than others. I'm not saying it's wrong, just
a tendency to overemphasise, first in the list of whatever rather than nth. It
always brings a smile to my face and it goes with the expression Vertrauen ist
gut, aber Kontrolle ist besser!

-

I think the last time I heard that using a van might be more efficient than
sending over telephone wires was in 1978. Of course, it's common sense and
fairly simple arithmetic to be able to work out the orders of magnitude of data
volume, time and cost for any given application. When the order of magnitude
- back of an envelope calculation - shows that two choices are in the same
ball-park, then you need to refine the calculation.

faster run time when using MODE C before the PUT or GET. I assume this saves
bandwidth and the data is transmitted not in clear text for those that do not
have encryption software. I suspect there is more over head in TCPIP or some

Re: Console hang

My first guess is that a very high priority task (JES2, perhaps) is running
flat out causing heavy degradation which could be perceived as a 'hang'
condition.

I seem to recall that a mass job submission could do this.

Another possibility is a full pack backup on a system volume.

Another possibility is an abend in some large address space. Dump services may
be freezing the environment briefly to gather information.

If you are pushing your box pretty hard, then it might not take much of a blip
to snowball into something noticeable, and it might take a few minutes for the
box to catch up.

HTH and good luck

I think I need the CMS lock because I am updating CSA.

It doesn't matter what you are updating; acquiring the CMS lock does you no
good unless all access involves acquiring the CMS lock. Unless you're writing
the code on both sides, you need to play by the existing rules.

If I were managing my own chain of buffers then I'd use CDS or PLO, but if
you're manipulating SMF buffers then you must play by SMF rules.

If there are more than one CMS locks

There's only one.

I was planning about issuing the following commands:

ITYM macros, and, as others mentioned, you need to remember the states of the
locks and not release a lock that you hadn't acquired.

Re: SETLOCK in IEFU85

2011-08-10 Thread Andy Coburn
snip
You stated that I could not get the CML lock if the local lock is help. Is
there a problem getting the local lock if the CML lock is held?
/snip

The CML lock is the Local Lock of an address space other than current home.
Hence there are as many CML locks as there are address spaces. The Local
Lock is *your* local and is everybody else's CML. Since the CML and the
Local Lock exist at the same locking hierarchy and the rule says that if you
hold one lock you can only obtain another lock higher in the hierarchy, then
you cannot hold both the Local Lock and some CML.

But I want to emphasize what Shmuel Metz said when he wrote that holding a
lock only affords protection from multiple updates if everybody who wants to
update that storage agrees to, and holds the locks in question. If you do
not know what program (other than your own) is updating this storage then
locking is not going to help you. If you know that the other program is
using CDS or PLO, they will still be allowed to issue these instructions
even though you hold the CMS lock. All CMS does is keep any other task in
any other address space from holding the CMS lock. It's up to you to
establish the rules for storage update and then abide by them.

If you don't know what other program is going to update this same CSA
storage and you want to protect against multiple simultaneous updates you'll
have to go to far greater lengths than the CMS lock, CDS or PLO. I think
I'll say no more about this type of protection unless you want me to.

If only other instances of *your* program are trying to update this storage,
then you can design your own locking mechanism. I agree with everybody who
has said that PLO (or CDS) is the better way to go than using system locks.
If you've had trouble with PLO or CDS, perhaps there was something not quite
right in the way you used them? I'm not saying there was, but just making a
observation that perhaps there was.

2011-08-10 Thread Kirk Wolf
John,

I almost never disagree with you, but if you run the TSO OMVS shell the
forked OMVS address spaces inherit the REGION= size from the original TSO
address space.

For example, if I turn on debug mode and run the cozsftp command under TSO
OMVS, it will dump out the LDA:

/S0W1/tmpexport COZ_LOG=D

/S0W1/tmpcozsftp

Co:Z SFTP version: 1.9.0 (5.0p1) 2011-05-09

Copyright (C) Dovetailed Technologies, LLC. 2008. All rights reserved.

..
*ZosUtil[D]: region size requested = 10K, Actual below/above limit =
8168K / 10K*
..

The 10K region size is what my TSO logon proc used.

IEFUJV can do everything, and the TSO submit exit would not be
necessary.

Duplicating the code in the TSO submit exit is a way of being nice to
the users and letting them know at submit time that there is a problem
with the way they coded their job card. Otherwise, it can be much later
for a number of reasons before the job is failed by UJV.

HiperDispatch with mostly small LPARs

2011-08-10 Thread Michael Hall
We are thinking about HiperDispatch implementation but I am not sure it is
appropriate in our environment. We have a z196 Host = 2817-M66/700 with 12 CPs.
There is one large LPAR with a share that allows access to 8.89 CPs. It is
assigned 12 LPs. The rest of the LPARs on this box have very low shares. There
are 8 additional LPARs and the highest physical processor share is 1.05. The
rest of the PP shares vary from 0.16 to 0.53. I am not sure that there is any
point to turning on Hiperdispatch for these LPARs. I read an article by Don
Deese where he said “HiperDispatch Management Mode cannot be effective in an
LPAR unless the LPAR has a share of CPC capacity that results in at least 0.5
(the “#CP” value) equivalent physical processors.” This was in a document about
the z10 and I am wondering whether it is also true on a z196.
If we enable HiperDispatch on the one LPAR will there be a negative effect on
the other LPARs? In total now there are 37 LPs assigned for the box. I think
this is a high number.

Any comments would be appreciated.

IKJEFF10 gets control as the JCL is being submitted (via the SUBMIT

Sigh.

DCB's have _nothing_ to do with allocation. DCB information is
used by the OPEN routines. SPACE and DATACLAS JCL parameters
affect allocation.

As far as sources for filling in DCB parameters and the priority
of these sources, there was a recent, tedious thread on this
listserv. The DCB fields that participate in what is called the
DCB merge are: RECFM, LRECL, BLKSIZE, BUFNO, OPTCD, DSORG;

ignoring the impacts of the DCBE and OPEN exits and OPEN RDJFCB,
the order of priority for DCB sources at OPEN time is:

1. If a parameter has a non-zero value coded in the program,
   that value is used

2. If a value is omitted from the program but coded in
the JCL, the JCL value will be used

3. If a value is omitted from the program and the JCL
but exists in a label, the value from the label is
   used

After the merge, OPEN checks for completeness; if only
the BLKSIZE remains un-initialized, if a new data set
is being created, and if the LRECL and RECFM are supplied,
and if RECFM is not U, the system will compute an optimal
blocksize and place it in the DCB. Next OPEN checks for
consistency; if all is well, OPEN gets buffers and, for
input files, primes the buffers.

The primary information source is DFSMS Using Data Sets
(SC26-7410; from the z/OS Internet library, you can
download DGT2D4A0.PDF for the z/OS V1R13 version); check
out chapter 21 Specifying and Initializing Data Control
Blocks, the section Using OPEN to Prepare a Data Set
for Processing; p332 has a diagram with a detailed explanation.

Note that high level languages might modify this behavior
using exits behind the scenes; check the docs for the language
of interest.

By allocation do you mean creation?

During dataset creation, the only DCB information available is from the

IKJEFF10 runs in the TSO user address space, under the TCB of the submit

In addition it has access to TSO/E control blocks that exist in the

Thanks for the correction. I thought it was more like a telnet session. I don't
much use TSO OMVS. I do use ISPF's interface to edit and browse UNIX files. But
I greatly dislike the dumb terminal interface of TSO OMVS.

 John,

I almost never disagree with you, but if you run the TSO OMVS
 shell the
forked OMVS address spaces inherit the REGION= size from the
 original TSO
 address space.

For example, if I turn on debug mode and run the cozsftp
 command under TSO
OMVS, it will dump out the LDA:

 /S0W1/tmpexport COZ_LOG=D

 /S0W1/tmpcozsftp

 ..
 *ZosUtil[D]: region size requested = 10K, Actual
 below/above limit =
 8168K / 10K*
 ..

The 10K region size is what my TSO logon proc used.

Which was how I originally determined what Kirk wrote about where the region

2011-08-10 Thread Rob Scott
If you identify the jobstep program name (and you *always* want it to run
non-swap), then an entry in SCHEDxx PARMLIB member should do it - see MVS
Init+Tuning

If a more flexible approach is required, then the SYSEVENT DONTSWAP and
TRANSWAP services can be used (depending on the length of time you want the
program to remain non-swappable) - note that your program will have to be
authorized to issue these SYSEVENTs

Re: batch job as non-swappable

2011-08-10 Thread Bill Fairchild
If you have a system monitor product like TMON/MVS or Omegamon, you might be
able to do it externally. I remember TMON/MVS had several swappability
functions built into it. Once when testing these functions, I used it force
the otherwise non-swappable JES2 to be swapped out and then swapped back in.
JES2 became very unhappy right after being swapped in. But TMON/MVS and the
rest of the operating system was still alive and well. I don't recall if there
is a way to force a job to be non-swappable or not.

It has to run authorized, and issue a SYSEVENT, either TRANSWAP
or DONTSWAP.

So most likely this has to be done by a tool or MVS monitor like Omegamon,
TMON, MXI, etc. Another option if the program name is unique or you
just need a temporary change is to update the PPT (SCHEDxx parmlib member)
with an entry for the program and add NOSWAP

PPT PGMNAME(myprog) NOSWAP

Then use the T SCH=xx command to update the ppt.

2011-08-10 Thread Don Poitras
Mark,
While I'm looking at this, there is one odd aspect I'd like to
understand. Maybe you know this. Even though the LDA shows the region
(LIMIT and SIZE) as coming from TSO when run under TSO or TSO OMVS and
RACF OMVS segment when run under the native shell, I'm not sure where
region requested is coming from. I have ASSIZEMAX=0536870912, but the
value that shows up both under TSO OMVS and the native shell as:

Region requested: 55296K

Perhaps this is set through some exit, but I thought it was strange as I
actually get the region size I expect, but this value is much lower.
When I run your exec on native TSO, the value is what I expect to see:
1048576K. I'd expect on TSO OMVS to see the same value and on native
shell to see 524288K.

are 3861 modules, of which only 360 or less than 10% are marked AC(1).

Re: batch job as non-swappable

2011-08-10 Thread Ed Gould
Tom:

Good one.
Way back in the 70's we had a rather large job (30+ hours and a couple of
megabytes memory). The user insisted that it would run faster if it was made
non swapable. We argued till we were blue in the face. Politics won and it was
made no swapable and duh of course it didn't run any faster. A few time it even
took longer (adjusted for input). We went up to the powers that be and asked
for it to be put back. The people started to pagefix everything in sight and
soon the whole system dragged to a dead slowness. Nothing else could be run. We
tried putting maxuser (tso) down low (10 if I remember correctly) and then they
howled because they couldn't monitor the job (long story best not told). They
were doing some strange things and trying to out guess MVS (again long story).
They had a programmer sitting at his desk constantly monitoring the job for the
entire 30+ hours. We asked if the guy was going to be there every week and the
answer was yes and we asked
if that was really cost effective and the answer came back its not your budget
MYOB.

I'd like to know too.  Off the top of my head I can think of two
possible reasons.  Perhaps you have another.

1.  You are establishing a cross-memory environment.
2.  You think the job will perform better if it is non-swappable.

IMO, number 1 is a good reason, number 2 is not.

if so..I am puzzled, Do i need to allocate a UCB prior to this ...My assumption
is that (1) find that dataset and (2) move name to deletet dataset name
and call CAMLST scratch...

Shared Hiperspace write serialization

2011-08-10 Thread Donald Likens
I have looked in the manuals so if the answer is there, I could not find it.

I am looking to write to a hiperspace from the IEFU8x exits. I do not see
anything to stop this but I am concerned about writing to a shared hiperspace
from multiple addree spaces. Do I need to be concerned? If in a middle of a
write operation an interrupt occurs and then from another address space issues
a write to the hiperspace, what happens?

Another thing I did not see in the manual. I assume an SREAD will retrieve the
data in the order it was written. True?

You should not be getting an 0C1, but rather an error message.

1) You may use the same physical CL44 field for all requests,
using the same name in the CAMLSTs.

2) SMS data sets are funny; you may only think you have a
non-SMS data set? You need to look up the messages and the error
codes. I prefer to use a DELETE (non-VSAM) statement with
IDCAMS. You may LINK or ATTACH to IDCAMS passing it a
SYSIN/SYSPRINT exit list; in the SYSIN exit you return the
DELETE statement(s), then end of input. In the SYSPRINT exit,
you choose whether to print or ignore the text given to you.
It's a little more overhead, but well worthwhile. The
information about the exits is in a figure, not the text, so
some types of reader don't show it at all. If you want sample
code, let me know. Also if the LOCATE returns a MIGRAT as the
volume serial, you can use an HDELETE statement to get rid of
the data set without a recall.

3) SCRATCH may need an OVRD parameter.

4) The 0C1 at location 52 means that you tried to do an I/O
(GET, PUT, etc.) to a closed DCB. Your fragment doesn't show a
DCB for SYSPRINT, nor the OPEN and CLOSE statement; and if you
have those, you could be missing the DD card.
