Any one else having problems with IBMLink and ShopzSeries sites today? Sometimes I get logged on sometimes I don't. Our proxy server times out trying to get to ShopzSeries. If you have not accessed ServiceLink from the web, we encourage you to do so now. Hey IBM - we've been trying ALL DAY ! Re: Confused About Channel Path Reconfiguration from HMC
Thanks for pointing this out Ed. I agree with the other responders that Single Object Operations what is implied here. More interesting though is the recommendation to use this method. I suppose a change has been made in z/OS 1.8 as I've always seen it recommended that to CF the CHP offline to the OS and only use this technique as a last resort. Does some release of zVM play nicely with this technique? Alan As a software developer, doing part time sysprog work, I will yield to the expertise on this forum to set me straight on system programming matters. Here's my latest puzzler: z/OS V1.8 System Commands contains the following in the discussion of the CONFIG CHP command: IBM Documentation Note that if you have systems running on a processor at the z990 level or higher, you can automatically reconfigure channel paths on and offline using the hardware management console (HMC) instead of issuing the CONFIG command. On a z990, you may have multiple logical channel subsystems, which means that if an ESCON card fails, you need to reconfigure 15 channels being used across 30 different partitions in each logical channel subsystem. Automatic CHPID reconfiguration lets you issue a reconfiguration request centrally from HMC, which in turn triggers the z/OS systems in each partition to issue the CONFIG command. Then only those partitions that cannot process the request or are not running on a z990 level processor or higher need to be individually reconfigured with the CONFIG command. /IBM Documentation This seems to imply that I can configure a CHP offline for the CEC (or maybe for a CSS?) at the HMC and all of the attached LPARs will automatically take action. Sounds great! The only problem is, I can't figure out how to do it on my new z9BC HMC. Of course, it's always possible that I'm just thoroughly confused about what's being described in the book. On the HMC, under Operational Customization, I have Configure Channel Path On/Off. When I drag the CEC to the icon, I get the following error: Object is not an acceptable type of object for the task I can drag CPC Images (or any group of Images) to the icon, and get a list of the LPARs in the group. The instructions in the dialog box say, This task can only be performed with a single target object. Indeed, only one LPAR may be selected at a time. So what am I missing? Where's the new functionality? How is a one-at-a-time, by LPAR, request from the HMC better than a one-at-a-time, by LPAR, CONFIG command? (How is it any better than RO *ALL,CF xxx across a sysplex?) Is there something I need to enable in my IODF, IOCDS, HMC, or SE to make the functionality worthwhile? Packaging using RELFILE, LKLIB, and FROMDS tells SMP/E the module is supplied in load module form and can be copied. LKLIB would have been your best bet. ... It sounds like I was just lucky for most of this. The JCLIN had BINDER steps for all but 2 modules so all but 2 of those links were actually called for. However, ACCEPT, which should be doing copies, also wants to do a link for every module in those linklibs. I'm toast. I either start over from scratch or wait for the newly reordered product tapes. Did you have to hire new people or were the existing zOS or *nix people in your shop able to handle it? How much help did you need / get from IBM or other consultants? I'll tell: We have 4 lpars running z/VM 5.1 and 5.2. on two footprints. Memory wise they are our largest LPARs (about 3 times as big as the z/OS ones). Using shared IFLs. Two of the lpars are production, two are development/ test. Each LPAR has between 20 and 30 Linux servers running. We grew our own z/VM support (two people who worked with VM eons ago). The Linux side of things is handled by the group that does the *IX support. No consultants that I am aware of but possibly IBM help. That is perfectly legal in my mind. Vendors compile code on their system and ship you the modules you run on yours. This is no different. Isn't it the z8xx you can RUN COBOL programs compiled elsewhere, but not compile them? Alan Suppose we licensed a COBOL compiler for one system; would we be violating license restrictions to run the compiles on that one system but ship the resulting object code out to other systems? Specifically thinking of a situation where developers submit their compiles using NJE, and the compile proc's JCL uses DEST=(node, userid) to send the results back to the submitter? I'm sure this is technologically feasible, my question is now that most of us have LE enabled as part of our systems, we no longer license the COBOL run-times, therefore is it legal to do it this way? Where in storage is the ACB? Below or above the line. Is your program AMODE 31? Good afternoon, IBM-MAIN I am trying to dump several areas that are supposedly passed to a subsystem open routine. Re: Adding LPARs without POR
I agree with Mark, but I think you are referring to reserved lpars - I thing you have to do a POR at least once to define them. I tried to make a couple of ours that we no longer used reserved but it meant taking all the channel definitions away which seemed like a lot of work only to have to put them back later so I didn't. Left the old definitions with minimal memory and don't activate them. Did I read somewhere that z/os 1.7 or perhaps one of the new boxes support adding LPAR's without a POR? The business mission is a kilo boat load of Linux images, not real z/os images. My knee jerk plan is to shrink a z/os image, and redistribute the resources across a large number of small Linux images. Re: TOD Sync acroos platforms (IBM and non-IBM) - STP?
Eric, Almost I think. The Sysplex Timer is a big clunky box. It connects to a PC as it's console We have a modem plugged into the PC that dials out to NIST. I think the CLO (CLOck?) card is the card in the processor that connects to the Sysplex timer. On 17 Mar 2006 09:34:16 -0800, in bit.listserv.ibm-main I wrote: I may be mistaken (it happens a couple times a year :-) ), but I was under the impression that a parallel sysplex did *not* require an ETR, only a sysplex timer. ETR != Sysplex Timer Based on feedback from Alan Field, Shane and Giovanni Cerquone, I admit being egregiously mistaken in this statement. (This group has a great, and very tolerant, collection of teachers!) I think the following diagram more accurately summarizes the architecture I was writing about in earlier messages: +--++--++--+ | || || | | zOS A || zOS B || zOS C | | || || | +--++--++--+ | | | | | | +---+---+ | | +-+ | Sysplex | | Timer | | (ETR) | +-+ | | +-+ | External| | Time| | Source | | Interface | | (CLO Card?) | +-+ | | +-+ | NIST | | GPS | | etc | +-+ I hope this version is a more accurate representation of reality! Relating back to the original suggestions of running an NTP server on the mainframe: that solution will keep all of your shop's systems pretty much in synch, but without that External Time Source Interface, your systems still may not reflect real-world time. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: TOD Sync acroos platforms (IBM and non-IBM) - STP?
What release of z/OS are you? Either Keith Clapp's SNTP code or the SNTP server that is part of z/OS. Have all the other platforms synchronize to z/OS. We have been doing that for about 4 years - seems to be working well once we overcame the political/idealogical problem that z/OS could actually do this. Dear folks; We have a necessity to synchronize our IBM Parallel Sysplex with other platforms, i.e. HP Non Stop, Sun, PSeries, etc. I'm aware that PS does not support NTP. I was thinking if with STP we can achieve this but with the information I have, I think the answer seems to be a big NO. Any suggestion?. How other has addresed this requirement?. Re: TOD Sync acroos platforms (IBM and non-IBM) - STP?
See SG24-2070 S/290 Time Management and IBM 9037 Sysplex Timer 300 plus pages. My interpretation is that the Sysplex Timer IS the ETR. You connect it to an ETS (External Time Source), modem dialing NIST (what we do here), GPS or WWV receiver and that gets the timer in sync with the rest of the world. The timer then causes the clock(s) in the processor to be adjusted to this time. Coming in z/OS 1.7 is a feature called STP (if I remember right) that makes the Sysplex timer obsolete and allows getting time from the network. Re: permissions and user list sys1.man1
Luis, This sounds like a question based in Unix terms. Access to resources (programs, TSO, datasets etc.) on a z/OS system is controlled by one of three security products. RACF from IBM, Top Secret from CA or ACF2 also from CA. Rules are defined within these products. To determine which users and what level of access they have you'll need to query the Security Product. It's not as simple as seeing the permission bits associated with a file name as yo can in Unix. Welcome to the world of z/OS. Alan Hi to you all! This is my fist post to this list. COBOL Compile time Question
We sent a bunch of COBOL source off-site to get it massaged. Now we have it back and some of the source won't compile. Enterprose 3.3.1 compiler. By that I mean the 140,000 source line program blows the compiler. We've been juggling with the SIZE and BUF parameters and feel we've squeezed as much as we can. Size is set to 9216K and BUF to 256. If we set SIZE any smaller the compiler terminates with the recommendation to increase the SIZE. We're seeing the following abend now: IEA705I ERROR DURING GETMAIN SYS CODE = 804-10 xxx COB STEP010 00 IEA705I 00F89280 00AC9C48 00AC9C48 1200 0FA0 If I understand the programmer correctly the off-site folks are compiling on a PC and not having problems. So, what factors influence the amount of storage needed? Number of source statements? Size of working storage, number of unique variable names, number of FDs? I think any source program that is 140,000 lines is way too large to be comprehensible. All insight into this situation appreciated. Re: XPAF Printing Libraries
I looked at out XPAF JCL and this is what I see: Notice they are all comments. //* ** //* PSF LIBRARIES* //* ** //* //*IBMFONT DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.FONTLIB //*FDEFLIB DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.FDEFLIB //*PDEFLIB DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.PDEFLIB //*PSEGLIB DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.PSEGLIB //*OVERLIB DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.OVERLIB Looks like that are part of IBM's PSF product from the comment. We use Xerox printers and a related product called XPAF to drive local and distributed printing. We have no IBM mainframe printers or related products. The XPAF PROCs allocate the following libraries, which I would assume from the names were IBM libraries: SYS1.FONTLIB SYS1.FDEFLIB SYS1.PDEFLIB SYS1.PSEGLIB SYS1.OVERLIB I just installed z/OS 1.4 and noticed that these weren't allocated. A look back at the OS/390 2.10 ServerPac libraries shows that they weren't allocated then either. Where do these come from? The XPAF guy denies any knowledge. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: 3270 Session Manager survey
Bruce, Someone else posted but VTUBES from MACRO4 should be on your list. Re: how to lose a sysplex in 30 seconds
We've run with AMRF(N) for years. Health Checker says this is the preferred state. One must presume the folks in CONSOLES know what they are doing Don't you need to have AMRF=Y set in order to capture (and display) outstanding action messages? (Not all sites run with AMRF=Y... my current site, sadly, is one that uses NOAMRF.) Tom, Yes, you do. At the risk of starting a tangential thread, why would a site choose to run with NOAMRF? Re: HCD, change existing partition from MVS to VM....
What if you punched out the deck, you could then edit it and migrate it back in? Folks, Some years ago I created a partition for our then test IFL to bring up z/VM and Linux. I still can't remember the whys but it ended up being defined as MVS. We've had no problems until now. We want to connect to a san fabric to get to open systems data on our shark. We have found that to accomplish this fibre hookup, it needs to be VM in the operating system config. Is there anyway to accomplish this without a re-keying or connecting by hand all that it had. I see I can not just change it from MVS to VM. I've tried several different copy and or move the config and it always brings MVS along. Ideas appreciated... -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

CPC and Image Capacity
We have one lpar that the CPC screen of RMF reports the following: Partition: P0D2084 Model 308 CPC Capacity: 448 Weight % of Max: Image Capacity: 392 WLM Capping %: All the other lpars report CPC and Image capacity are the same. We can't find where this might be set. Any suggestions?
