RMF Spreadsheet Reporter from z/OS 2.4

Attempting to create a working set, and I get the error messages below. I
cannot find the error messages in the RMF Messages manual, under the top of RMF

One other thought.

This list and the email address provided may not resolve your issue quickly.

The best path is always to open an ETR/SR with IBM for quicker resolution.

Thanks Roger, I'd love to but the FTP dialog is generated internally by RMF PP.
The workaround is retrieving the reports manually. Still don't understand why
the RMF group has no answer for this...

Since 'BIRR.' is already your working directory, what happens if you use
RETR D196.T145616.LISTING
instead of
RETR 'BIRR.D196.T145616.LISTING'

Re: AW: RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2014-07-17 Thread Roger Bolan
Since 'BIRR.' is already your working directory, what happens if you use
RETR D196.T145616.LISTING
instead of
RETR 'BIRR.D196.T145616.LISTING'

AW: AW: RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2014-07-16 Thread Christian Birr
Miklos,
I can't tell you, the FTP process is build internally and I suspect that the
process is generated before the job has finished, there is no possibility on
RMF PP side to switch on a trace but as I understand, the host FTP is used so I
might be able to switch it on there, no messages in SYSLOG either.
Michael had a similar problem and described the path he did go to avoid it
(Thanks Michael). Maybe raising the timeout limit on host side would solve the
problem. I'll give it a try tomorrow.
One last word on RMF PP - btw RMF PM works fine - : even if it's "free"
software I would expect that the code works (I don't want to start a new
discussion about "Freebie" software). Someone in the RMF team could answer
those questions, still awaiting a reply.

Re: AW: RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2014-07-16 Thread Schmutzok, Michael A.
When I submitted a job, RMFSR wanted to sit there and wait for the submitted
job to get done. Eventually it times out because the job could take up to 20
minutes or more. So my process was to (and I'm going from memory since my
mainframe is gone):

1. Click on the Remote SMF Dump Data folder and select an SMF dataset (if you
haven't set up one, right click on the blank area and select NEW)
2. Click the Create Overview Record button on the toolbar
3. On the Create Overview Record window, copy the Remote dataset name
4. Press the RUN button (progress meter goes active)
5. Wait a couple of seconds to make sure the job makes it to the mainframe.
6. Press the CANCEL button
7. Select the Remote Overview Records folder on the resources tab.
8. Right click the blank area and select NEW
9. Where it says to enter Name, paste the remote dataset name that was copied
in step 1
10. Repeat process

When the job finally finishes on the mainframe, then I would:

1. Select the entry created in steps 6-7 from above.
2. Press the FTP toolbar button
3. Change the LOCAL name to something more descriptive (for later selection in
charts)
4. Press the RUN button

After the FTP finishes:

1. Select the Local Overview Records folder on the resources tab.
2. Select an overview record entry
3. Click the Create Working Set button on the toolbar

Once the conversion process is finished, you will have an entry in the Local
Working Sets folder that can be used to input in various spreadsheet charts.
That was the process I used every month for 10 years to create monthly charts
and yearly trends charts using Overview Records. Hopefully that will shed some
light on your issue.

The RMF spreadsheet reporter package is broken - simple as that.
We seem to get these threads every 18 months or so - and all the sites that
have working setups can't understand why new environments don't work just like
theirs. You *cannot* just use the GUI to build the JCL and expect it to work.
Yes I know it seems that's what the thing is supposed to be for - amongst other
things.
Last site I was at I gave up and we decided EasySMF was a better option. Comes
with a free trial, and the developer is a subscriber here.

Thanks Lizette
Yes, I did, that's where I got the error msgs from. I'm on the latest release
(on both sides). I simply have no clue where to look else. I've being working
on that for a couple of days now. No messages in syslog on z/OS, no RACF
messages either, the jobs are submitted and run, the output file is created and
then the reported errors, so the communication between WS and z/OS should be ok.

RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2014-07-15 Thread Christian Birr
Hi list,
I do have difficulties to FTP resulting output dataset from z/OS back to
my workstation. The postprocessor und reports are just running fine and
the listing dataset is created. But when trying to retrieve the dataset
back to my workstation, I get 505 RETR 'userid.D.T.LISTING',
dataset not found and 505 GET error. What am I missing? Are there any
special ports to be opened on my WinXp workstation firewall? Docs
contain no hints and a manual FTP just works fine. TIA

Re: RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2012-12-04 Thread Ron Wells
well---found problem...

went back to just select from weekly files I had..
found a weekly that was corrupted ... think there may have been a rerun
and no one said anything..

took 5wk's into sort using below...then took that output as input to
creating working set...and it worked..

 INCLUDE COND=(06,1,BI,GE,X'46',AND,06,1,BI,LE,X'4F')
  SORT FIELDS=(11,4,CH,A,7,4,CH,A),EQUALS
  MODS E15=(ERBPPE15,36000,,N),E35=(ERBPPE35,3000,,N)

my next question and hopefully someone has already done this...so
recreating a wheel is not necessary...

jcl(batch) to create the files needed for working sets and ovr files... as
well where to ftp them into---DIR's?

as for what reports to generaterather get all of them...and select
what I don't want later

Re: RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2012-12-04 Thread Ron Wells
Found problem...had a week/rmf tape that was bad
sorted using the sort parm's

 INCLUDE COND=(06,1,BI,GE,X'46',AND,06,1,BI,LE,X'4F')
  SORT FIELDS=(11,4,CH,A,7,4,CH,A),EQUALS
  MODS E15=(ERBPPE15,36000,,N),E35=(ERBPPE35,3000,,N)

took output (batch) into run and able to get the data..

next question..
anyone have batch run to generate all the reports?
seems time consuming to keep asking for reports...think they should
default all reports and default input without needing to keep putting in
same file/smf-rmf as input..
option to change---sure--but jumping around not making sense..

maybe just me...

lol

Sorry Ron, are you making a statement or asking a question ?.

As it happens I didn't progress much, despite trying several iterations of
(z/OS) batch machinations, both before and after that post of mine you
quoted.
Interesting that this client has a working monthly report - modifying that
caused it to break also ...

I needed to put something in place that would be useful when I left. The
reporter just doesn't cut it any more IMHO.
I suspect Andrew may have a new customer soon.

Sorry Ron, are you making a statement or asking a question ?.

As it happens I didn't progress much, despite trying several iterations of
(z/OS) batch machinations, both before and after that post of mine you quoted.
Interesting that this client has a working monthly report - modifying that
caused it to break also ...

I needed to put something in place that would be useful when I left. The
reporter just doesn't cut it any more IMHO.
I suspect Andrew may have a new customer soon.

Having spent several hours trying to make this product work, the only
conclusion I can come to is it is an absolute farce.
Totally and utterly unuseable as shipped nowadays.

I, like many others on the list, have used this in the past and managed to
get some graphs out after floundering around in excel. Not any more. You
still get to flounder around, but the result is always the mentioned zero
length file.
*IF* you get that far.

I set aside some time to try and get this finally working so I could
publish some graphs for the masses.
The GUI is useless - I was unable to ever get it to produce a batch job
that was of any use at all. Period.
Eventually I went for the (as in MSDOS) "batch option". Update some
options, kick it off, publish the graphs.
Right ...
At least you get some OVW sysin that happens to produce the output you
need to generate the worksheet. If you don't blow the ridiculously small
space on the generated JCL, and you don't want to use date/time
environment variables in filenames (as MSDOS output) ...
An MSDOS bat file that goes off and calls java that produces a file to be
separately fed into excel. Hello ... who thinks this stuff up ?.

Lots of "fun", but I think I can get what I need sometime tomorrow.
Maybe.

I wouldn't even call this "broken as designed"

If you are the only person who would be using it, yes it is $595 per
year. However with 50 LPARs you might find that you have more than one
person who would find it useful, and a single license might be false

The cost of EasySMF is $595 per user or $795 per LPAR for a site
license, for a 12 month subscription. In both cases there are discounts
for multiple licenses. No other software is required (except for Windows
itself). MXG I think publish their price on their website. I don't know
the cost of SAS.

However, EasySMF is different to MXG and I don't claim it is a
replacement for MXG. Unless you are only a light MXG user you would
probably find that it didn't have MXG functions you were used to.

The idea behind EasySMF was to create a product that would be valuable
even if you already have MXG or similar software, and to make SMF data
accessible outside the groups that traditionally have the MXG and SAS
skills.

At every site I have worked there have been groups that would have found
SMF information useful, but had no way to use it either due to no tools
or no SAS skills. Ops analysts/schedulers, storage management and even
systems programmers.

EasySMF is designed with more of a focus on problem solving than
capacity planning. It is designed to help answer questions, and follow a
thread through your SMF data where initially you may not know exactly
what you are looking for. If you are investigating a problem you can
move from one report to another without having to break your train of
thought to code up a different report.

For example, you might look at all service classes, then details for a
particular service class, a specific job in the service class, the
history of that job, the datasets it used etc. As you move to different
reports from different record types the filtering (service class, job
etc.) is maintained.

If you don't already have a SMF reporting product, EasySMF will provide
a lot of useful information and could be all you need. If you currently
use MXG or a similar product, EasySMF will hopefully also provide a lot
of useful information, but I do not claim it is a direct replacement for
your current product.

"A replacement for MXG & SAS" is probably a simpler marketing message,
but I think it would result in less satisfied customers.

It's not free, if that is what you are suggesting, but not many people
can afford to work for free. It is not expensive - at systems programmer
rates it probably pays for itself if it saves a day of fiddling around
trying to get the information some other way. And if you can get all you
need in the 30 day trial period, it is effectively free.

The 30 day trial means you can download it and try it out now, without
registering for an account, talking to a salesman etc. Assuming you can
install software on your PC, you can be using it in minutes. Not a bad
thing - but perhaps unusual in the z/OS world.

You might be interested in EasySMF:
http://www.smfreports.com

You can view charts on your PC without going through the rigmarole of
RMF Spreadsheet Reporter. Right click on the charts to copy to the
clipboard and paste into other applications.

I haven't used RMF Spreadsheet Reporter (I tried a long time ago, but
the process seemed so convoluted I was sure there was something I didn't
understand) but EasySMF has a few features that I don't think RMF
Spreadsheet reporter can do:
- Click through many of the reports to see related or more detailed
information
- Drag on charts to zoom in and get a more detailed view of interesting
time periods
- Use type 30 records to show you what was running on the system or in
particular service classes at the time.

You can download a 30 day trial from:

Re: RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2012-11-21 Thread Shane Ginnane
Having spent several hours trying to make this product work, the only
conclusion I can come to is it is an absolute farce.
Totally and utterly unuseable as shipped nowadays.

I, like many others on the list, have used this in the past and managed to get
some graphs out after floundering around in excel. Not any more. You still get
to flounder around, but the result is always the mentioned zero length file.
*IF* you get that far.

I set aside some time to try and get this finally working so I could publish
some graphs for the masses.
The GUI is useless - I was unable to ever get it to produce a batch job that
was of any use at all. Period.
Eventually I went for the (as in MSDOS) "batch option". Update some options,
kick it off, publish the graphs.
Right ...
At least you get some OVW sysin that happens to produce the output you need to
generate the worksheet. If you don't blow the ridiculously small space on the
generated JCL, and you don't want to use date/time environment variables in
filenames (as MSDOS output) ...

The Help is pretty good for each process. Back when we were running this,
new versions got pretty slack. Last time I tried it the File transfer thing
never would work and I couldn't get enough information to fix it(I think
Bob Shannon reported similar observations). The whole process is 'folder
based'. So once I got the sample thingy to work I just FTP'd the MVS report
into the correct folder and everything was happy. I forget the limits of EXCEL
but it runs out pretty quickly in a moderately sized environment.

RMF Spreadsheet Reporter Issue

2012-09-29 Thread saurabh khandelwal
Hello Group,
Does anyone know the solution to this problem? I've
created a listing dataset on the host and when I try to create a working
set from it I
get a message window which says :

Report for specified options cannot be found in Report Listing ...

The underlying window says 'Transferring the Report Listing' and the
progress bar keeps cycling from blank to full. When I click on OK the
message changes to 'Process failed'

I have noticed that same problem has been posted in IBM main before but not
solution has been provided.

Please suggest.

I forgot,

If you include SHARE at the front

SHARE RMF SPREADSHEET REPORTER it should be some of the Share Presentations
to the top.

They should be very helpful.

2012-09-25 Thread Staller, Allan
There is not much to configure here. It is pretty much canned.

1) Download the current version from
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/features/rmf/

2) Run an RMF Post processor report and create overview records.

3) Download records and feed to Spreadsheet Reporter.
