IBM is a large corporation. Different factions have been captivated by marketing pressures since the beginning. The RD side has always been more forth coming. For a number of years IBM-Main was accessible via INFO-Access under hardware. It was a mirror of BAMA.UA.EDU and for me was great way to keep all the stuff tied together on a 3270/AT. Then one day it quit! No announcement or anything just DOA. We had SE's back then and I asked him what was the problem. Lots of gibberish about the Almaden server being overloaded and nobody knew listserv...yada, yada, yada. Anyway, lots of hops and bops. But we managed to keep it afloat as upgrades to switches, routers and servers made it easier protect and faster to distribute. The Help is pretty good for each process. Back when we were running this, new versions got pretty slack. Last time I tried it the File transfer thing never would work and I couldn't get enough information to fix it(I think Bob Shannon reported similar observations). The whole process is 'folder based'. So once I got the sample thingy to work I just FTP'd the MVS report into the correct folder and everything was happy. Got booked at The Hyatt(pink Flamingos) around the corner and about half the time the SHARE shuttle busses had to detour thru parking lots because the streets were mini-lakes. z/OS the refinished antique
On the Antique Road show(PBS) one Queen Anne sideboard was appraised at several thousand dollars. The appraiser went on to say if it hadn't been refinished it would be worth over a hundred thousand. The hardware advances coupled with the hundreds of new instructions allow z/OS to progress and evolve. In Dr Webb's rollout paper for the G6/Z6 he points to the use of 62% commonality and addition of cache strategies to accomplish thruput improvements mated with z/OS instruction set on a base processor with 176,000,000 transistors. These are not trivial pursuits. Almost missed Lionel's new title and address. Anyway isn't it dependent on the application to ferret this out? Contrast ISPMLIB with ISPPROF as to how short blocks are handled. Fixed a couple of nasties with 'high level' users editing their PROF dsn with NULLS on STD. There was an emulator that came with a poor user interface and when transferring FB it always assumed F so we'd these horrid 80/80 whoppers finally tracked it down to one dept that had it set for their server. Sleigh bells ring...We had an ol' V8 in the basement that only did SWIFT. It queued the requests until it got to a billion then would do the transfer. We'd get the float on the interim. Good solid revenue producer. Then one day it 'thermalled'. They had boxes and boxes of components trucked in from Sunnyvale. Still took about 22hrs to get it back online. There were so many 'suits' wandering around the OPs manager came and said 'Listen up, if you're not a CE you'll be escorted out!' There was a DASD Seek Analysis tool. Don't know if it was Candle or somebody else. Our tuning folks used the heck out of it for Storage volumes back then.
