IBM is a large corporation. Different factions have been captivated by
marketing pressures since the beginning. The RD side has always been more
forth coming. For a number of years IBM-Main was accessible via INFO-Access
under hardware. It was a mirror of BAMA.UA.EDU and for me was great way to
keep all the stuff tied together on a 3270/AT. Then one day it quit! No
announcement or anything just DOA. We had SE's back then and I asked him what
was
the problem. Lots of gibberish about the Almaden server being overloaded
and nobody knew listserv...yada, yada, yada. Anyway, lots of hops and bops.
But we managed to keep it afloat as upgrades to switches, routers and
servers
made it easier protect and faster to distribute. There have been pretty
good
arguments about abandoning IBM-main for years. It still may happen, but for
know we carry on as best we can.

z/OS the refinished antique

On the Antique Road show(PBS) one Queen Anne sideboard was appraised at
several thousand dollars. The appraiser went on to say if it hadn't been
refinished it would be worth over a hundred thousand.

The hardware advances coupled with the hundreds of new instructions allow
z/OS to progress and evolve.
In Dr Webb's rollout paper for the G6/Z6 he points to the use of 62%
commonality and addition of cache strategies to accomplish thruput
improvements
mated with z/OS instruction set on a base processor with 176,000,000
transistors. These are not trivial pursuits. The Global Foundries fabrication
center is a multi-billion facility with continual updates and modifications.

evolving as it carries a large workload for Fortune 500 companies.

2)Software config WRT to Buffer use. Limiting non-production resources with
 throttles.

3)Craig Mullin's DB/2 book is a good starting place. He states 70% of DB/2
performance were related to bad SQL code.

4)Monitor tools. The old Platinum tools were bought by CA. Analyzer,
Detector, SQL pay for themselves
after a few bumps. Workload observations with RMF can hint at when your
peaks will occur. End of month,
sale season, market swings whatever your business is.

Hmm or was it the other way? Wish I'd kept the source.
