used to work normal everywhere, but these days, it shows range only
under certain towers, for example, the second I cross mamablam coming

happens when I cross Marina, where it shows full range and it goes
zero once I reach Santhome. It doesn't work anywhere else in Tamil
Nadu. But it works fine once I reach Pondicherry.
First I thought its issue with the SIM or provider(BSNL), but I tried
using it in another Samsung phone at Tambaram, its working perfectly
 fine.
Then I thought its got to do with cell's antennas, some frequency
issues, since both 2G and 3G(WCDMA) are not working, but l8r I
realised that even when there's no range, my internet's working super
fine. (infact, i'm sending this mail from my cell, from Tambaram, and
cell's showing zero range, no calls, messages allowed.)
Third reason I thought was that its some issue with software, S40, and
I reinstalled OS and still its all same. Not OS, not provider, not
hardware, then where's it failing? Any explanations?

This happens quite often on my phone as well. Atleast, in my phone, this
is due to switching between UMTS (WCDMA) and GSM ie., 3G and 2G. While I
am browsing, everything will be fine until it goes to 0 bars and comes
back with full signal. The full signal is actually with GSM/EDGE. To
test this theory, I disabled UMTS on my phone and this was no longer
happening. Without UMTS, I get full signal almost all the time. But then
I was able to browse only at EDGE speed instead of HSDPA. So, I have
reverted back to the old configuration with UMTS enabled.

As the 3G coverage improves, this problem should go away over the years.

I know that, and I usually use only 2G or 3G, never work with dual mode
becz of it. My issue is different it goes zero beyond some place and never
comes back even while its in coverage area!! :)

Hard to say whats going on. In my case, when I change the mode on the
phone to WCDMA (3G) only, it loses signal very often. And, at times,
takes upto 5-10 mins to find the signal back. So, I tend to prefer this
dual mode.

Who cares, if one does successful work, there are ten to bark. If I keep
throwing stones on every dog that barks, I may never reach destination.

Please don't compare members on this mailing list to dogs. It is insulting.

So I will continue with my work. If you want, take it, else close your eyes.

We must forget about this copyright and must have a culture of sharing.
Else we will end up like Apple and Samsung.

No-one wants to see anything like Apple vs Samsung, including some
judges. For the simple reason that it is petty and there are better
things to do. Following is an article by US Federal judge after
dismissing the Apple vs Motorola case.

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/07/why-there-are-too-many-patents-in-america/259725/

But we cannot forget about copyright, this is the way the world works.
So, We have created our own copyright ie., copyleft which gives us
freedom within the system. So, my only suggestion is, don't ignore
copyright because people looking at your work won't.

GNU/Linux can be run in various modes termed as runlevels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runlevel#Linux

single user mode is runlevel 1. To change run levels, we use the
command init. For example, to change to runlevel 1, run the following
from command prompt (as root).

   init 1

To boot into run level 1, you need to modify your kernel line in grub
configuration. Just add 1 anywhere in the kernel line and you will
boot into single user mode.

CentOS and RHEL contain same packages but RHEL is a paid version for

depends on the definition OT for this group. The group is not a
homogeneous group with a single well defined aim. It is a loose alliance
of several different types of focus. I see it like this:

 1. It is a linux users' group - so obviously any discussion of linux and
linux based stuff is not OT.

 2. We have a large number of adherents to the Free Software movement, so
any discussion of this - including discussions of the wider concerns of
the Free Software Movement like DRM etc is not OT.

 3. We also have a large number of Open Source enthusiasts - so
discussion of these topics, including the ongoing debate between open
source and free software is also on topic.

 4. In addition we have users of various BSD and unix flavours.

 5. As a consequence of the above, discussion of any open source
language, toolkit and framework is also ok.

 6. And advocacy of all the above also implies that criticism of
companies and ideas that are contrary to the above is also on topic.

I would say that the post under consideration falls fairly under points
2 and 6 above and is not OT.

I agree with you that the above mentioned points are relevant to the
list in some way, but where do we draw the line ? I am sure, there are
going to a bunch of news articles every day on DRM, patents, copyright
etc. For example, the recent controversy over Blizzard and Diablo III on
GNU/Linux (over wine),

http://www.gamepolitics.com/2012/07/03/updated-diablo-iii-linux-users-banned-blizzard-using-wine

Because, GNU/Linux users are affected, one can claim it to be relevant
to the list but I just consider it to be news and would add an [OT] tag.

IMO, The reason for [OT] tag is to help members in the list to skip
emails of least importance/relevance and to enable discussions which are
subjective without any end goal.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: [Ilugc] why it is important to promote linux

2012-07-02 Thread 0
Similarly hardware companies that ship machines with linux are persuaded
to use terms like 'we ship with ubuntu' or 'we ship with android' rather
than say 'we ship with linux'.

I will not go into how the distros that disown Linux also fail to
contribute back to the community ... this is too well known.

So let us promote - and encourage others to promote - Linux (or, if you
 so desire GNU/Linux.

In my opinion, fragmenting the Linux brand as Ubuntu or Android or other
brands is a good thing. For long, one person has embezzled the credit
for the work of the entire community.

GNU has contributed the most to the base system. But it should be
mentioned that, the most commonly used softwares such as email clients,
web browsers, web servers, multimedia editing/viewing, gaming, GUI shell
(kde) and so on are contributed by a vast and diverse section of the
community.

Even though, I support RMS on GNU/Linux name, to fully represent the end
product, the name should be totally random or a representation of the
community as a whole.

I would say promote Linux as a product but not as a brand.

Re: [Ilugc] why it is important to promote linux

2012-07-02 Thread 0

The context in this post is the huge financial and propaganda effort
being put in by Microsoft to prevent the spread of linux (or call it
open source or foss) - it is not the ongoing quarrel between various
people on the assignment of credit for creating parts of the open source
software ecosystem. If you want to have a thread on that subject feel
 free to start your own.

I apologize for trying to take the thread in a different direction, It
was not intentional. When I read your interesting opinion on
Ubuntu/Android and how Microsoft might have had a hand in them not using
the term Linux, the first thing that popped into my head was Its a
good thing (debatable, of course). And, I misread the subject of the
email as why it is important to promote linux (brand).

Microsoft's efforts to prevent the spread of Linux has died down a bit
in the last few years. Even Microsoft Azure cloud service now offers
GNU/Linux as a choice of virtual machine,

http://www.infoworld.com/d/open-source-software/microsoft-run-linux-azure-195068

I am sure many of us have tried to promote GNU/Linux through word of
mouth but that works only to a certain extent.

I would say promote Linux as a product but not as a brand.

 whatever this means

What that means is, the word Linux is not important. Promote the
features, softwares, and the freedom that GNU/Linux offers.

 192.168.2.55:3128
 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT
 --to-port 3128

What is your Thunderbird configuration ? Do you expect thunderbird to
contact SMTP/IMAP/POP3 servers on port 80 ?

Typically, SMTP/IMAP/POP3 servers run on a non-80 port. Unless, you
configure thunderbird to use a HTTP tunnel, by specifying a proxy. Have
you done that ?

If your proxy supports HTTP tunneling, you should test whether tunneling
works on the destination host/port in question. Refer to the following
link to run your test,

http://www.anta.net/misc/telnet-troubleshooting/http-proxy.shtml

Unfortunately, I don't have a proxy setup right now to give you the

Is there a way to keep track of the network traffic through all the
different interface devices in my system. Or a library to do so, I want to
create a log that store the total size of file transfered since the script

By default, iptables keeps track of the number of bytes and packets for
each rule. You can use the option -vx to display them. In your case,
based on what the script does, you can add an iptables rules matching
the network activity which will keep track of number of bytes and
packets. You can reset the counters using -Z option. Here is a sample
output from iptables,

$ sudo iptables -vxnL INPUT|tr -s ' '|cut -d  -f14,2-4|tr ' ' '\t'

pktsbytes target

Re: [Ilugc] packets and TCP

2012-06-20 Thread 0

A packet on the network looks like a train.

The engine is the packet header. Then the different layers are like
the compartments and the Ethernet trailer
   is like the guard compartment.

Obviously without the engine the train is useless.

I like this analogy. Easy to remember and simple.

In the case of packets on the Internet WAN path, packets are small.
 Normally 256 bytes
or something to account for the MTUs of the physical links.

Atleast in ADSL, the MTU on an Internet path is quite close to the MTU
on a local ethernet. One can use traceroute to find it,

$ traceroute --mtu 8.8.8.8 | cut -d  -f1-2,6-

  1 1.411 ms F=1500 1.425 ms 1.319 ms
  2 2.403 ms 2.253 ms 2.256 ms
  3 3.380 ms 3.262 ms 3.276 ms
  4 35.600 ms F=1460 36.049 ms 35.662 ms
  5 35.964 ms 36.442 ms 36.002 ms
  6 36.333 ms 35.301 ms 35.725 ms

  9 36.790 ms 37.032 ms 37.538 ms
10 39.013 ms 41.111 ms 38.754 ms

In the above case F=1460 indicates an MTU of 1460 on the internet hop.

And every TCP connection involves 3 packet exchanges before the first
 byte of payload
   is sent.

Syn, ACK and ACK ACK or something.

I have seen with netcat that whenever there is a port forwarding, NAT
 or some other
   issue, the handshake fails.

I am not sure if I understand. It will help if you can elaborate on what
you have noticed which leads to the failure in TCP handshake.

An interesting article. Thanks.

Re: [Ilugc] Modem updates or Hardening Guidelines

2012-06-13 Thread 0

I have always wondered that the ubuntu machine which I work with receives
lots of security updates, if so why not the modems which we use as it is
direcly on the line of fire. Are there any tips to harden the Modem which
we get from the local ISP ?

If you are looking for updates, you can find firmware updates from the
manufacturers site. But if you are really paranoid, you should buy a
ADSL modem and flash it with one of the community built firmware which
supports lot more features. Although, you should know, you can brick you
device if something goes wrong while flashing the ROM (including power
cuts).

A few years back, I risked my old modem for installing dd-wrt and it has
been working flawlessly ever since.

There are a few other firmwares such as OpenWrt and tomato but I don't
have much idea about them.

Re: [Ilugc] How to burn a CD/DVD with?

There are few classes of data, which are being carried in the disks, but
must be prevented from being copied.

For instance, Personal photos which I can store on a disk as a memory of
some occassion, which I may show people but, not allow them to copy!

Anything that can be read by a computer can be copied. You just have to
decide how much security you are okay with. Even though your presence
might stop an individual from copying content. You may never know what
the computer is running, which could take periodic backups in the
background.

The only way to protect anything from being copied by an individual is
to plant it directly in their brain. I don't think such a technology
exists yet, so we might just have to live with a small fraction of
people copying the content.

Re: [Ilugc] Why these emails, Girish? (Was Re: the vi editor)

One of the interesting things about this list is this series of
monologue-mode gyaan mails from Girish. I wonder if there is some history
behind these, etc. Or does the list serve as a brain dump area for the
current 'regulars'. Just curious, nothing else.

I think, Girish started these emails with a [TIP] tag in the subject, to
share some of what he has learnt with the list, which is great. Now that
the [TIP] tag has disappeared, his emails remain. Although, IMO,
recently his emails deviate in part from a technical viewpoint to a
subjective viewpoint, which invariable brings in other members to the
discussion.

I hope, there are beginners in the list who benefit from his emails and
the following discussions.

I am unable to see any of Beetle modem on
 http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

Looks like dd-wrt is only for ethernet routers/modem and they don't seem
to support combo devices which do DSL, I could be wrong here.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=452901

You can use the Beetle modem for DSL and configure it to support PPPoE
relay or as a bridge, which ever is applicable. Then you can use an
ethernet router with PPPoE to configure your internet and connect the
uplink on the router to your beetel modem via a ethernet cable.

I feel, this is more than what you asked for but this is what comes to
my mind since dd-wrt doesn't support ADSL modems. I think, the same is
the discussion in the above link.

A few years back, I risked my old modem for installing dd-wrt and it has

If you don't mind can you tell me (aside) what is the modem which you are

I am having doubts regading on linux admin..
1.Is it possible, could i change my admin career to php, perl, python, ruby

2.Could anyone point out the importance of linux admin?
3.How would be the packages for linux admin when compared to the
 perl,python,php,ruby programmer?
4.if i had got 1 year experience as linux admin, what was skills i should
 know?

In my experience, linux system administrators *are* expected to know
scripting language especially perl and shell-scripting. So by learning
perl/python/php/ruby, you are not changing your career but improving the
existing one. So, go ahead and learn it today.

Being a linux system administrator has its advantages and disadvantages,
like in any other career. I am guessing, you haven't got challenging
work yet. I have a few friends who manage a few hundred machines across
4-5 continents and go to sleep with their pager. You are really on the
line of fire, if something goes wrong and company is losing revenue, you
will be the first man on the scene. Then comes the
management/developer/tester etc.

Trust me, starting out, few years is frustrating in any career. Hang in
there and do your best, things will fall in place. In the meantime, keep
learning something new, even if it can help you only a little.

PS: I am not a system administrator.

Well in the recent case, there was an court order obtained by
copyrightlabs and it has been implemented by all ISPs including BSNL
and MTNL. In fact ISPs like Reliance and Airtel have removed the bans
 but MTNL atleast still continues.
 See
 http://www.medianama.com/2012/03/223-producers-of-tamil-film-3-get-court-order-making-isps-responsible-for-checking-piracy/
And these stupid ISPs pretty much blocked whole of legal sites like
pastebin, again it still continues on my MTNL connection.

I guess, these ISPs have just gone wild and blocked a lot of things even
the ones not in the court order. Apparently, as per the hindu article,
this is a mistake and was not intended.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/article3429836.ece

Harish Ram, CEO, Copyright Labs, hired by producers of the movie 3, R K
Productions Private Limited, for the online anti-piracy management of
the movie, said that the ISPs had misinterpreted the order. “Instead of
blocking specific URLs that were screening the movie, they blocked the
whole sites,” he said..

I wonder if there is a clause in the court order to remove the block
after a specific period of time. IMO, the ISPs might just forget to
remove the block and its us who face problems in the end.

I had started using Ubuntu as my main OS and of late I have seen while
booting 10.04 it just shows a black screen I have to press the power button
once again and then power button once again to get it up an running, I
browsed the net and landed on the link which is shown below. They have
asked me to replace quite and splash with nomodeset, which I did and my
ubuntu does boot up, however while booting up now it shows lots of text
scrolling past the screen while it is booting. Is this normal ? Since the
OS shows black screen almost once in a day I need to wait for a couple of
more days to know for sure if it is completely fixed.

#Added by BALA on 2-Jun-2012 as per
 http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=nomodeset
 #GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

It is normal to see the scrolling text. Only in the last 5 years, they
have added the splash image. Personally, I prefer the text to make sure
all services have started up okay.

If you are up for some experimentation, you can try to set the value to,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=nomodeset quiet

and see what happens. Without a splash image, I don't know what you will
see on boot up.

Re: [Ilugc] Govt of India proposes to ban SSH (Or wants you to use 40 bit keys)

2012-05-26 Thread 0
 http://www.dot.gov.in/isp/guide_international_gateway.htm

As the title suggests Guidelines and General Information for Setting Up
of International Gateways for Internet, they are merely guidelines.
Even if it is enforced, it has to be done in some legal format where the
words like individual or group or organization are defined.

Besides, restricting RSA does not mean they was to ban SSH, it is of
least concern. They are used in SSL which will have a serious impact
when it comes to banking. Also, there is *no* 40-bit RSA (usually
512/1028/2048/4096 bits). Using 40-bit RSA key, is like multiplication
using 13 or 14 digit numbers, which is ridiculous, you might as well use
plain text for that matter. They probably meant 40-bit DES ie., a shared
secret encryption. In which case, like 3 DES, you can use four 40-bit
keys to achieve a reasonably safe 160-bit encryption, so I am not quite
sure what they are trying to achieve.

And, the concept of outlawing encryption by the government (entirely) is
an age old tactic which is hard to enforce.

Re: [Ilugc] IPTABLES features ??

2012-05-23 Thread 0

Can any one tell what all things we can do using IPTABLES for hardening
 of Linux system.

In short, the following are the components of iptables,

- Tables : filter/nat/mangle/raw--- Each of them have their purpose
- Chains : INPUT/OUPUT/FORWARD etc. --- Like a network packet state
- Target : ACCEPT/DROP/LOG/REDIRECT --- The action to perform
- Matches : connlimit/owner/limit--- Modules for packet matching

Now to give an example, one can add a rule saying,

Table:filter-Chain:OUTPUT-Match:owner:dipin-Target:DROP

The above rule will discard all outgoing packets for owner 'dipin', this
is similar to saying deny network access for user 'dipin'.

iptables is a complex system, there are several chains and several
extensions for Target and Matches. Trying to know all the features of
iptables will take time. The better approach would be to sit down and
come up with a security policy and implement it using iptables.

I agree. This is a computer security course and the term Hacking is
just purely misleading even though it might be attractive to the college

There should have been a section on History such as the one here,

IMO, Without understanding the history, It will be hard to understand
the purpose of various things in the course.

To me, the course seems like an introduction to various terminologies
around computer security. I doubt that at the end of the course, any
student will be able to crack or secure anything.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: [Ilugc] Need to know difference between stunnel and SSH tunnel

2012-05-07 Thread 0
Could someone please explain me what is the need for stunnel when we can
 use ssh tunnel

 $ssh -L :localhost: b...@somemachine.com

Here I tried to ssh to b...@somemachine.com and forwarded my localport
to the somemachine.com's . I guess this is what even stunnel does.

AFAIK, stunnel is used to add SSL functionality to any plain text
protocol. For example, let us say, you run a web server on port 80. Now
to make you website secure, you can either configure the webserver to
run on ssl port 443 as well (or) run stunnel on 443 and configure it to
forward to port 80 on localhost.

About 3 yrs back, I had benchmarked stunnel vs SSH tunnel for securing
data transmission. I remember concluding that stunnel was crap and
suggested SSH tunnel. It didn't fly with the security team though for
SSH connection can support multiple channels which is a potential
security risk (indeed!). Anyways, in the end, we encrypted the data
ourselves instead of using either of these.

Re: [Ilugc] Need to know difference between stunnel and SSH tunnel

2012-05-07 Thread 0
If we make stunnel to run on port 443 to forward connections to port 80 of
the http server locally. Will the client have problem speaking with
 stunnel ?

run stunnel on 443 and configure it to
forward to port 80 on localhost.

The client shouldn't have any problem since stunnel will handle the SSL
handshake/encryption while the HTTP protocol will be handled by your
webserver over the forwarded connection.

CLIENT http/ssl/tcp--- STUNNEL -http/tcp- WEBSERVER

NOTE: Read http/ssl/tcp as HTTP over SSL over TCP

I did not understand this point, can you kindly explain more.

SSH connection can support multiple channels which is a potential
 security risk (indeed!)

While using OpenSSH forwarding, you might notice that you are able to
work on a shell as well as support forwarding of multiple connections,
even though, the OpenSSH client has established only one connection to
the remote host (OpenSSH server). This is because the SSH protocol
defines Channels/Session to keep track of various tasks.

Security problem arises because the protocol does not define any
restriction on opening a channel. Which means, throughout the lifetime
of the TCP connection, a channel can be opened for any of the tasks.
OpenSSH have extended the protocol which sends a message
no-more-sessions to indicate no more channel open requests but when
forwarding this cannot be done because you need to accept new
connections to be forwarded.

No worries if you are unable to clearly understand the above para. It is
a little technical. In general, OpenSSH is highly secure but security is
not absolute so you just need to go with what you think is acceptable
for you.

It is mostly likely running in prefork model. In the following link,

The short answer to your question is to bind to privileged port 80.

Re: [Ilugc] Linux Kernel PID understanding

2012-05-07 Thread 0

How to understand kernel PID Understating, I have seen #ps -aux
command show all user process and system process will show, I can't
find Some PID is not there, How can I see Hidden process numbers

 To Find perticular PID

 root ~ # ps -p 100
PID TTY TIME CMD
 root ~ # ps -p 62
PID TTY TIME CMD
 root ~ #

please guide me guys, give any idea clues.

There is *no* hidden process, however a process ID could be consumed by
a thread which will be displayed as LWP in ps output. Here is a simple
example,

# Shows only the process listing.
$ ps -p 812
   PID TTY TIME CMD
   812 ?00:00:00 rsyslogd

# List both process and its threads
$ ps -Lp 812
   PID LWP TTY TIME CMD
   812 812 ?00:00:00 rsyslogd
   812 814 ?00:00:00 rsyslogd
   812 815 ?00:00:00 rsyslogd
   812 26014 ?00:00:00 rsyslogd

The IDs 814, 815 and 26014 correspond to threads so you cannot use ps -p
to list them. A better way to find whether a process is running is to
use kill -0 as mentioned below,

$ kill -0 813
bash: kill: (813) - No such process
$ kill -0 814
bash: kill: (814) - Operation not permitted
$ ps -p 814
   PID TTY TIME CMD

Also, the process IDs run from 1 to 32767 and roll over, so don't be
surprised if you see gaps. The gaps just indicate that those processes
have exited.

No worries if you are unable to clearly understand the above para.

I am still under the impression that when we port forward only one client

If you try it once, your impression will change. Port forwarding does
work with multiple clients. If you find some discrepancies, provide us

   some thing similar to
 http://localhost

 Is this possible..?

Nope. In simple terms, the address bar format is
(protocol)://host[:port]. Port is optional if you are going to use the
default port for the associated protocol such port 80 for http. If you
don't use the default for the protocol, you have to explicitly specify it.

 http://kractivist.wordpress.com/2012/05/04/immediate-release-freedom-fast-third-day-of-hunger-strike-for-internet-freedom/

Please spread and create awareness, we will not get live media coverage for
this hunger strike, its up to us to raise voice for our freedom of speech.

 More information,
 http://www.internetdemocracy.in/2012/04/20/why-the-it-rules-should-be-annulled/

I think, they are talking about this,

http://www.mit.gov.in/sites/upload_files/dit/files/GSR314E_10511(1).pdf

It is a 4 page document so read it yourself and form your opinion.

IMO, to the most part the document is poorly written. It does not
clarify many things when it comes to procedures, unless they are
mentioned in the original IT act. I am no lawyer, so I don't know.

It is difficult to tell how these rules will play out, they might just
collapse on themselves for not having any particular structure.
Nevertheless, I am glad to hear there is an opposition for these rules.

There is an Android port for x86 hardware (Intel and AMD CPUs) at
http://android-x86.org/. Those who wanted to try Android but did not buy a
tablet or smartphone can try this in your PCs. I installed it along with my
Linux Mint and windows installation. I had some problems after installation
but the community is quite responsive. They provided answers to my queries
and now I am able to boot and use it from my hard disk. Only current issue
is ethernet support is not available in the CD provided (there are patches
that provide this support queued up in the git repository). If network
support comes I will be switching mostly to Android. Android ICS is
available for download now. Hope this helps some one :).

I am not a great fan of Java with its speed/security. And, not to
mention Android being a google product. I think, I am going to stick

 xargs: unterminated quote

Your filenames probably contain quotes and other messy characters which
unix does not like. You can resolve this by using the options -print0
and -0 in find and tar respectively. (NOTE: Option uses number 0 and not
character O).

$ find / -mtime 1 -print0 | xargs -0 tar -czvf backup.tgz
$ tar -xzvf backup.tgz -C outdir

Better to go with remastersys or reconstructor. Linux from scratch will
take a lot of bandwidth (amount of time) and resources (disk space for
source code and compilation). You can just take ubuntu change default
themes and settings, add and remove packages, change things as you need and
create a new distro from that. It will take very less time compared to
 Linux From Scratch.

On a side note, Please trim your post to the quote that you are

Re: [Ilugc] About GPL Licensing on a plugin

2012-02-09 Thread 0

Thanks for taking your time to answer my question. Let me clarify a
bit here. The plugin that I am going to modify will be released under
GPL license. There are two parts an application and the plugin. The
application will connect to these plugins. So we would be developing
the application from the scratch and the plugin would be an
improvement from the existing work which we are going to release in
 GPL.

How does your application talk to the plugin ? Is it over web service
(or) some other protocol (or) some other way ? If the communication
method is one of the standards (such as HTTP 1.1) then you should be
okay with releasing source only for the modified plugin. But if the
communication method is GPL licensed then, i am not sure, you need to
dig into the license to see if your application is considered derived as
per GPL.

Also, there is a lot difference between GPLv2 and GPLv3. What license
does the plugin come under ? GPLv2 is far more relaxed, even when it
comes to contributing back to the community.

So just releasing the plugin in GPL would solve it rite? The
application codes can remain our company property?

Seems to be so but no one can say for sure without the details.

Re: [Ilugc] remotely accessing a machine on a lan with dynamic IP

2012-02-08 Thread 0

I maintain a server in a remote place. It is connected to a LAN - the
LAN is the usual poor man's LAN which uses the BSNL router as the dhcp
server. They have dynamic IP from bsnl. The machine the machine has a
fixed IP (192.168.1.123). The inward facing IP of the router is
192.168.1.1. Is it possible to ssh into this machine from outside, and
if so how?

This is pretty simple to do, I have been using it for a few years now.

There are three parts to the problem,

1. Accessing your Dynamic IP
2. Opening your SSH port
3. NAT Loopback

(1) Dynamic IP

Since the IP is dynamic, you need a domain name which can be updated
periodically. There are several dynamic DNS providers, one of the
popular ones is dyndns.org which is now dyn.com. They provide a couple
of REST APIs which you can use to get your external IP and update the IP
in your dyn.com account.

I have attached the shell script which you can use. Just modify the
script with your newly created dyn.com account name and password.

(2) Port forwarding

BSNL modems are unpredictable when it comes to port forwarding but you
can try it out. In the port forwarding table, just specify incoming port
22 to be forwarded to IP (192.168.1.123) and port 22.

(3) NAT Loopback

This is just something you should know, it is not required. Even after
the above setup, you might not be able to access your domain name
directly from your internal network if the router doesn't support NAT
loopback. AFAIK, linksys/cisco routers support this while the basic
netgear routers don't. I don't know about BSNL modem/routers.

In case you are interested, the script does the following,

- gets your external ip
- resolves the domain name to the current ip
- if the current ip and external ip are different, issues an update.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Ilugc] [Hardware] Config for Low end Linux desktop

I am planning to buy 10 numbers of system for FOSS related free

Main purpose for buying these to enable students to work on FOSS (
mainly Linux Admin and programming ) topics.

Raspberry Pi is the ideal choice here. Although, I am not sure whether
it will be available in India.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs

Budget is really tight as all the money coming from my pocket. I was
 thinking about below configuration.

 1. AMD Athlon II X2 260 + Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P + HDD + 4 GB Ram

 or

 2. Intel Atom D525 based system.

For your purpose, a 4GB/8GB flash drive would suffice, you don't need a
HDD. Once the kernel is in memory and your programs are in the cache you
won't see any difference in performance.

Also, 2GB DDR3 should suffice for your purpose.

Regarding CPU/MB, I haven't come across a package less than Rs. 6000
unless you get Atom. Atom D525 seems to be a reasonable processor. It is
better than couple of my machines with Pentium 4 1.6Ghz and Pentium M
1.73 Ghz which run Fedora 15 and Fedora 12 respectively. Also, read
reviews on whether Atom works on Linux without any issues.

IMHO, you should setup one machine first. So that, you can make sure
there are no driver issues and you are satisfied with the purchase.

Re: [Ilugc] teaching Foss syllabus in colleges

2012-01-24 Thread 0

my experience i have seen that the intelligent always goes to the industry
sector. then how do expect the staff to be very bright and know everything.

We expect staff to be sincere, and dedicated, with a willingness
to learn new technology and developements

IMO, This is a very idealistic view. I haven't seen in any kind of work
where everyone is dedicated. Majority of the people are dedicated to
their family, a small number are dedicated to work and only a very small
number find the balance between the two.

institutes. Also students always want experienced faculty to teach them.
what if no companies recruit freshers? what will be the situation then. I

No one always wants experienced staff. All we want is people
with the right attitude and dedication. It is not easy to find such
staff these days. How many among the professors really know what the
flags in the TCP header are for ? How many staff really know how an OS
actually boots? These are stuff that a staff MUST know.Thanks.

Most colleges will not have any professors if they have such
restrictions. AFAIK, It is hard to find good professors for the provided
compensation.

Re: [Ilugc] teaching Foss syllabus in colleges

2012-01-23 Thread 0

 but it seems continuing always.
the staff call us every year to cover the syllabus. instead of the staff
learning Foss stuff, they use us.

this should be changed. the college staff should learn the Foss subjects
and they should start teaching the subjects themselves.

Every individuals capabilities are different so we cannot say for sure a
person with one year of experience in FOSS is eligible to teach
students. Which is one of the reasons why they have certifications. So,
the question is how does one know whether they are ready to teach FOSS
subjects. Certifications seems to be the simple answer but, IMO, they
are no good as well.

I think, self confidence is probably the most important factor to get
someone to teach FOSS subjects, I am not sure of any common solution
which can help everyone build that.

There are some who have issues with anyone trying to make money off
FOSS. But IMO, majority on this list encourage such activity. Pls
 go ahead.

Same opinion here.

This [Commercial] tag is bullshit, IMO. There is nothing like Free
 Lunch or Free Beer.

I understand your point but it is not bullshit. It is required so that
one can quickly understand the subject of the topic. In this particular
case there was a effort to distinguish this thread with [OT] so I am not
going to complain even though [Commercial] is more apt here.

Re: [Ilugc] PIPA and SOPA Co-Sponsors Abandon Bills

2012-01-19 Thread 0

Being a large and diverse country it is natural that every piece of content
on the web will displease a few thousand people. If all these content have
to be taken down there will be no need for any search engine - there will
be no content except for bland govt sites!

Similar to how TV was once considered or is considered as an
interference in one's education (morally/culturally/etc..). Internet is
also a major interference for the younger generation. In a country where
all of public broadcasting is PG-13, it is only expected that internet
will eventually be regulated. The important question is how this
happens. IMO, the public internet at large should be kept open but the
individual residences should be able to decide on the package they need,
this is currently not possible. Also, how does one incorporate such
diverse views of the population ? All the firewall and other solutions
out there are very local and don't work at a large scale considering
internet is now present everywhere phones, laptops, TV etc..

[Ilugc] [OT] wikipedia: partial blackout ?

2012-01-18 Thread 0

I don't get it, why did wikipedia decide to do a partial blackout ? I
was under the impression that they will take the domain offline or
something more serious. This SOPA overlay seems more like a child's play
(technically) than anything else.

If you haven't noticed, the following div is added to the end of the
wikipedia pages which of course one can stop from loading by just
pressing ESC.

div id=mw-sopaOverlay
   div id=mw-sopaColumn
 div id=mw-sopaHeadline
 div id=mw-sopaText
 div id=mw-sopaAction
   /div
/div

I am sure there is a reason behind it, but just can't seem to figure it
out..

Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way?
The Wikipedia community, as part of their request to the Wikimedia

English Wikipedia accessible in some way during an emergency. The
English Wikipedia will be accessible on mobile devices and smart

Ah ok. I wonder, what type of emergency they are talking about.

 about.

School Students have to submit project next day morning? This is now-a-days
 common emergency parents face.

I am sure there are several other websites where one can find such
stuff, it may not be as organised or ad-free as wikipedia but they
should be able to manage for one day.

I also thought at a similar angle but don't find it compelling enough.

Re: [Ilugc] Ctl+l

2012-01-17 Thread 0

What is your current terminal type ?

 echo $TERM
 I get xterm!

Try to isolate the problem, check whether the behavior is similar on all
applications on the terminal such as on vi/emacs. Also, try typing
CTRL-V CTRL-L on bash prompt, you should see ^L output on the terminal.

what terminal emulator are you using gnome-terminal or xterm or (?).

Try setting the terminal type as linux using the following command and
see if it works,

$ TERM=linux bash

The Ctl+l shortcut refuses to clear screen as it used to. It has decided
not to obey bash and has
taken a life of its own; returns a puny 'l' ! Any solutions, I am in Squeeze!
 Of course 'clear' still works.

It is most likely something to do with the terminal type you have set,

Re: [Ilugc] Web site hosting query

2012-01-15 Thread 0
I have registered the domain name with the domain registrar.
For hosting, i would like to do it on my home desktop(running apache
server. wordpress ) . i do have broadband connection with the static public
 ip from the internet vendor.
I will do the port forwarding on the broadband router .

I dont know, how to do the DNS for the domain name i registerd with my
 static ip.

Registering the domain name is only for ownership. You have to specify
the name servers which can resolve your domain name. In many cases, the
registrar themselves provide DNS services using which you can specify
the A record to resolve to an IP.

If your registrar don't provide DNS services, you might have to get a
DNS solution elsewhere or setup one yourself. Once you know the
IP/hostname of the nameserver (DNS server), you can update it with the
registrar.

On a side note, You don't necessarily need a static ip if you can live
with 2 mins downtime/day in case of a dynamic ip.

I hope you have tested your setup by connecting with the IP directly
before purchasing the domain.

Re: [Ilugc] code contributions for open source software by us

2012-01-14 Thread 0

As for your analogy, if you want to know the number of people who travel
by train to go bird watching, it is foolish to watch the trains and try
to identify the 0.0001 percentage of the travelers who are going to
watch birds - it is far easier to go to the bird sanctuary and find out
the number of people there who commute by train.

Well said. Although, I don't think there is one place where we can find
open source contributors. May be, what we need first is to compile a
list of reliable sources where one can find such contributors.

Re: [Ilugc] [ILuG-C] Microsoft Office on Linux

2012-01-10 Thread 0

That's why RMS has been insisting on giving importance to *freedom* than
the other technical aspects. Now we are in a sorry state that even a FOSS
enthusiast in a LUG has forgotten the whole point of Free software and is
advocating for using M$ product on Linux.

I don't think *freedom* means anti-proprietary. Even though it might
advocate the use of free software over proprietary software, I don't
think it intends to ban the usage of proprietary software. To give an
example, NVIDIA provides its proprietary drivers for Linux and I use it
because it works best for my hardware. So, the first thing I do after
installation is nuke nouveau. This does not mean I have forgotten the
point of free software.

IMHO, If someone wants to use a proprietary product with FOSS, so be it,
denying this right to him/her would indeed be against the FOSS philosophy.
