Re: [ilugd] june meet - on 26-06-2005
T.Meyarivan [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: the date is fixed and no speakers as yet.. Mary, Having been there, seen it all I am repeating my suggestions which couldn't be implemented while I was there due to absence of a formal society. How to get a regular stream of speakers for the longer term who have worked on their presentations and technology behind it? The suggestion I repeat below LUG as a professional body of importance for technologists(and others) promoting Free and Open Source Software should invite ( send postal mailers ) to the heads of Educational Institutions(or heads of Computer Science Depeartments) in LUG's area of influence and a little beyond, offering to pay speakers ( students!!) honorarium ( to cover travel expenses and a small party back home ) and issue a certificate ( issued by Secretary/Joint Secretary of LUG in Delhi ) for speaking on topics related to themes of the monthly meets. LUG needs to make it a defined and written down process of the society to offer a uniform honorarium to students spending time to prepare technical topics delivering the presentations, once the presentations (papers!!) are accepted. Each themed meet can be made a competitive event where double the honorarium can be paid to the best speaker and a corresponding certificate stating the same provided.( criteria can be defined for basing the best speaker on audience/judges inputs ). Even the judges can be invited from amongst the lecturers/professors in the educational institutions( NGOs!!) and issued offical Linux Delhi certificates. This needs a bit of long term planning as in:- 1. Decide the themes for the next 4 ILUGD meets 2. Invite speakers for the topics under meet themes for the meets to be held two months from now. 3. Send out postal mailers to head of computer science departments inviting audience for technical topics being presented ( might be a good idea to provide certificates or other takeaways related to the talks to the attendees too ) The essence of doing it right is planning and providing sufficient time and incentive to potential speakers to prepare 2-3 months in advance. I know many other LUGs do not do this as they are more successful in regularly involving students as volunteers and perhaps even a steady stream of star speakers. If we can't invite the stars we must promote a new generation of FOSS champions. The best of these stars can then be invited to speak for ILUGD at bigger fora. All this should not prevent no more than a single regular old speaker from amongst the regular LUG guys(and gals!! sorry Mary! ) to speak to the audience once in a while at the meets. Most importantly I am not volunteering to help implement this as I am too far away from the scene of all the action however I can always criticise people who do any actual work and watch from the sidelines to have my fun. Perhaps we need to discuss how a initiatives to this effect are being scuttled by interests ( resisting the temptation to call them vested as yet as I feel there is still hope ) claiming to represent the community ( or this is just my view -- I would be happy to be proven wrong on this count for the community's sake ) -Tarun -- http://www.tarundua.net Nothing you ever wanted to find about Tarun Dua ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

May I request that we take this topic for offlist discussion for a full clarification. I'll try and drop in at IHC today evening. May I ask how much effort and content has gone into the site so far? If this issue isn't resolved within a day please get the content and the presentation and move them to another provider. My cooperation would be available in full for whatever the content owners and stakeholders (Niyam and Vivek) for this site decide. Niyam doesn't seem to be reachable on phone. The site will be back soon with all the original objectives and I'll take time out to manage it whenever it needs technical intervention. 2. If Linux Delhi has any outstanding issues with branding I'd like to ask Sandip to point his un-official domain to creative dot ( creative.lug-delhi.org) and be done with it. 3. If anyone has any issues with this arrangement go ahead have creative.linux-delhi.org pointed to another hosting location. But even if they are not, why don't we get some sort of a strategy to actually contact those colleges and see how many of them have inhouse LUGs, failing which we could help them set it up. Ah! Finally a volunteer to write a strategy document. With more Mini-LUGs in and around (which could maybe be affliated to ilugd as a parent LUG or something), you'd have intra meetings, which would give a boost to the dwindling numbers of interested people. Well the Mini-LUGs are welcome to use the ILUGD mailing list as a home mailing list for solving problems and organizing meetings until they can have the critical mass by themselves. *) Another suggestion - Apart from just Discussions of stuff, or presentations/demos of something, have a monthly competition of some sort? The Dev meet could have a programming challenge, the ilugd meet could have something more oriented towards the average user - best desktop, Linux Gaming challenges, GIMP art, Blender Art.. the possiblities are endless. I would say excellent idea. IMHO, we should dichotomize the evangelism track, and assume that a large number of people ARE using Linux. We can do away with that if we get enough well-prepared talks. Then, a kind of constitution could be established, http://www.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/anCMS/main.cgi?action=societificationmId=1047 I am still waiting for the President Designate's personal information to begin the process for societification. /mudslinging *) Random thought - If we form a non profit organization, does the Government give us grants etc to propogate Linux? (like they do to NGOs?) Nah! I wouldn't recommend asking money from the Indian Government and risk their meddlesome bureaucrats anywhere near ILUGD. Hi All, Looks like no one is interested in the Linux Delhi Meeting this month. I have a suggestion on how to make it more interesting and worthwhile. There are a lot of colleges around Delhi/Noida/Gurgaon/Faridabad and beyond the pale. I suspect a lot of students are on the list. suggestion Students are invited to become speakers at ILUGD/ILUGD-DEV meetings with prepared technical topics (with slides sent in advance) at the LUG meetings and be prepared to answer questions. ( read: Grilled by the ILUGD crowd ). I propose a honorarium be paid for students from the ILUGD kitty ( we can look at sponsers if required ) with a view to reimburse their cost of travelling to the venue ( and taking their time out to prepare the talks well). In addition ILUGD can issue a letter of appreciation for the same which can help the students add to their resume. /suggestion Thanks -Tarun PS: We need a venue for the meet. Minutes of Meeting:- 1. Atul Asthana spoke about length about the various issues faced in promoting linux and need for a multi-pronged approach as opposed to one right way. Outlining the importance of sales, he highlighted that Intel 8086 was chosen as the base for IBM PC only because of good marketing and not on technical merits alone against much better processors at the time ( the Z-80 and M-68000). However intel had a much better sales team. 2. Raj Mathur highlighted a recent news item in economic times ( I don't have the URL - if someone has it please post it here) Govt. of India is going to push through legislation which will in effect announce software patents to be applicable in India from January 1st 2005 without debate. [ilugd] Topic and Venue suggestions for 21st November 2004 ILUGD meet
Hi Everyone, Time to start planning for the 21st November 3rd Sunday Monthly meeting. Please make venue and topic suggestions. Learning from last time experience 1. We prefer to have a meet in an educational institution if possible. 2. Meet Coordinator (/me is the volunteer by default otherwise ideally a meet coordinator is from the venue provider organization) needs to get in touch with local host (pun intended) authorities for pre-publicity for the event. -Tarun -- http://www.tarundua.net Nothing you ever wanted to find about Tarun Dua ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

[ilugd] Minutes of Meeting Linux Delhi Oct Meet
The meeting started off with usual introductions with people reciting how long they have been using linux(and less about who they are) The first talk was Sudev Barar talking about his reason for using linux and forcing a lot of others to use linux. The five (or was it six) main reasons he gave for using linux and advocating it was 1) Money 2) Money 3) Money 4) More Money 5) Even More Money After that there was a long tea-break with or chai-break as the students from School of Convergence put it. Raj Shekhar arrived just in the nick of time before his talk and got his surprise gift ( a Maharaja Tux T-Shirt ) . Raj Shekhar delved at length on how to get help from man pages, info documentation and other sources of help from the system including /usr/share/doc Finally Arjun talked about basic Unix Shell scripting using bash. Then some of the members left for PVR Saket. -Tarun ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

That way we get a chance to crowd out the developers for once. What does Mary say to this. And let this be targeted towards newbies/students again not to lose the momentum built after LDD2K4. However let not my opinion not the decision making process of the list. Guys anymore suggestions for the theme speak out now or the call for speakers shall be made for the current theme. [ilugd] Re: Let a 1000 LUGS bloom all across NCR [blug-non-tech] So what would you like to do?
Exactly my thoughts!! Evidently LDD 2K4 shows us that even ILUGD is a big bad impersonal LUG with moves afoot for formal societification and attendant bureaucracy. Shehjar Tikoo wrote: Had a bad day at work or what? No just experimenting with proof by contradiction. Actually as Sandeep pointed out ILUGD is nowwhere a impersonal LUG as of today. Sure, I would suggest that we have associate LUGS( associated to main LUG.), in satellite towns and suburbs, and let these smaller groups do their own thing, at their own pace and also have them attend the bigger LUG's meets to stay abreast of the larger picture in the region. The idea might seem vague as of now, but someone could refine it probably. All I am suggesting is that Linux users can organize simple movie+lunch/dinner type birds of feather meets ( where incidently linux and technology can also be discussed ) -Tarun -- http://www.tarundua.net Nothing you ever wanted to find about Tarun Dua ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

[ilugd] [Fwd: [lb/2004] Getting the LUGs involved]
-Forwarded Message- From: Atul Chitnis [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Linux Bangalore/2004 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [lb/2004] Getting the LUGs involved Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 17:43:55 +0530 All: OK, this is a dificult subject, so please forgive me if I don't quite get this right on the first attempt: That Linux Bangalore has now become India's largest technical conference, and may even be one the largest in Asia, is now a fairly established fact (numbers, my friends, numbers). What many people fail to realise, however, is that LB is not supposed to be a technical conference alone - it is supposed to be (and in fact is) a community event - created by and for the community and driven by it. Over the years, we have been trying to get Linux and FOSS user groups from across India to use the event to draw attention to themselves. Given the huge national and international audiences who converge at this event, this makes a lot of sense. Now I can understand it if larger LUGs don't feel that they need this kind of exposure, since they are well established in their own rights. Not that we wouldn't love having them participate - it is just that they seem to feel that they don't need to. This probably explains why the Mumbai and Delhi LUGs are so poorly represented every year at the event (though there is no shortage of *speakers* from these places!). But our focus isn't really on the big LUGs - not even on the Bangalore Linux User Group (which, as we all know, is probably the single largest in India) or the Chennai LUG (the oldest and best established LUG in the country). We would like the smaller LUGs, such as Belgaum, Goa, Coimbatore, Trivandrum, Bijapur, Vizag, Pune, Nagpur, Mysore, {insert comprehensive list of LUGs here} etc. etc. to be seen and highlighted. This is made clear every year when Linux Bangalore is inaugurated not by some big name in a tie, but by representatives from the various LUGs who are attending the event. This is no gimmick - we have done this for three years in succession, and will continue to do this even if $deity is a chief guest at the event (in which case s/he will be *one* of the people inaugurating the event). So why this long note? Because we need your help. It is physically impossible for us to reach all the LUGs in India, but using the network effect (you know a couple, and can contact them, they know a couple each, and each contact them, and so on), it is possible to reach a lot of people and let them know about *their* event! It is a no-brainer getting technical people to attend, but that isn't the sole reason for LB's existance. This is about the community as well. As LB, we can offer LUGs some space at the expo, to tell people about themselves and their activities (even if it is just some poster space, or handouts), halls where they can meet with ther LUGs to discuss how they can improve their memberships, activities, etc. and a chance to meet with like-minded people. These facilities have always been available to LUGs, and will be available this year as well. All it needs is some prior planning. What I'd like to do now is to have a discussion (and please, let's keep the politics out of it) about how we can get the word out to the LUGs, what is it that would keep them away, what would make them come, etc. Over to you. And secondly you have to change the CD during installation. like first put cd 1 then cd 2 then cd 3 then again cd 1 then cd 4 again cd 1. Why it does not install all the packages from Cd 1 first and the from 2,3,4. You might have a better luck with Redhat Support for these questions, they decided to do it.
