The Coconut Wireless
Radio Heritage News
Issue #23 October 2009
__

Hello, and welcome to the latest news from the place where popular
culture, nostalgia and radio heritage collide!

Whether you're enjoying spring or fall, I hope you'll also make
some time to come over to www.radioheritage.net where our new layout
makes finding features, stories, images and more so much easier.

There's so much freely available content that you really will
find the Google Search helpful - in fact, there are hundreds and
hundreds of pages of stuff about radio broadcasting across the
Pacific!

This issue I want to mention the fantastic dedication to duty by
people at several radio stations in the Samoas during the recent
earthquake and tsunami. At Pago Pago's KKHJ-FM and Apia's Radio
Polynesia [both radio heritage partners of ours] as well as Apia's
2AP, staff risked their lives to broadcast warnings and stay at their
posts in the face of extreme personal danger.

You can read our media release about their bravery at
www.radioheritage.net and if you're listening to Radio New Zealand
International's Mailbox program next week [www.rnzi.com] you'll hear
our latest documentary which looks deeper at the recent tsunami and
reflects on how lucky they were to survive - broadcasting in the
heart of the Pacific Ring of Fire - and how stretched are radio
resources in the region.

Our most popular content is now even easier to find.look for
our colorful new icons for AFRS Armed Forces Radio Memories [30 plus
features] Long Lost Australian Radio Stars [35 entertaining
features] Pacific USA [almost 15 great features]...
Island Radio Pacific Style [over 15 exclusive features]... the
growing Art of Radio series our well researched and
illustrated Radio Dial Popular Culture features.

Some of the new stuff you'll enjoy includes.Japan AM Radio
Dial 1941 [fascinating look at what Japanese listeners heard as WWII
approached].. WASA Radio Antarctica [inside the diary and
personal photo album of the southernmost radio station manager in the
world].2LM Lismore [the latest in the incredibly popular look
back at Australian heritage AM radio stations of the 1940's]..

As well, we've made the Radio Guides easier to use and will be adding
in the next day or two our exclusive list of almost 70 Australian AM
stations operating in the almost unknown 1611-1701 AM dial.plus
our New Zealand Low Power FM Guide now details almost 430 FM stations
currently on the air and some 900 now silent operations.

Whether you're visiting www.radioheritage.net to look for the latest
station information, station histories, personalities, radio design
[such as car stickers and art work], early amateur broadcasters, how
radio and popular culture have connected across the Pacific, or some
good media books.I'm sure you'll enjoy what you find, and, it's
all free.

We've also got some special thank you offers for donations
towards our radio heritage activities. In the year ended March 31
2009 our total income was just US$6300 and our operating costs were
significantly higher, so we genuinely welcome your financial support
right now.

for every donation of US$10, we'll mail you 10 colorful Art
of Radio Japan postcards.. and for every donation of US$50
we'll mail you a copy of 'Voices in the Air' the classic and well
illustrated story of New Zealand's radio history ...

Check out some of our favorite websites: www.musicofyourlife.com
features streaming of easy listening standards of the 1950's
[including big band, swing, jazz and stars such as Sinatra] from Las
Vegas.Thom Whetston is doing a great service for AFRTS fans at
www.afrtsarchive.blogspot.com [with some wonderful audio from greats
such as Charlie Tuna] and our good friends at www.radioinfo.com.au
cover the latest in Australian radio news, jobs and exclusive
interviews..

Behind the scenes, there's a lot going on here too, with initial
testing finally underway of our new interactive databasewhere
you'll be able to upload and share your favorite radio station audio,
YouTube clips, photos, scans of radio station memorabilia, articles,
features and much moreyou can publish your own stories, oral
histories, research projects and much more with us as wellso this
will explode the website content!

So, whether it's spring or fall where you are, share some good
news with friends, enjoy life and make some time to come over to
www.radioheritage.net and start connecting popular culture, nostalgia
and radio heritage across the Pacific with us and thousands of
visitors like yourself.

[IRCA] Lapland DXpedition on DXing.info

2009-10-16 Thread Mika Makelainen

Hi,

I have published a report on the recent LEM278 DXpedition to Lemmenjoki
in Finland's Arctic North. Lots of reindeer, but even more radio
stations. Conditions on the AM band were pretty good, with many
interesting catches especially from the Americas. Check out the details
at http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/lem278rep.dx - a log will follow
some time next year, as listening with Perseus takes time.

Re: [IRCA] TA's found inside BOG last night + Questions

2009-10-16 Thread Gil Stacy
Dave,
Pre-amps are often used to boost antenna input. A good one is made by DX
Engineering, the RPA-1. I use it occasionally. There are many designs
posted on the net for diy adventures. However, some designs are better than
others as far as noise making. If you live in an electrically noisy area, a
pre-amp will also amplify the background noise so the benefit is limited.

2009-10-16 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Thanks for the model number, Gil,

Yes I did notice an increase in noise with the preamp that went with my
old Sanserino loop but more often than not the increase in signal won
out. In fact, being a casual MW DX'er then like now, I added SEVEN new
stations to my log within two hours of stringing the Sanserino, dueing
the day when the band was dead. That was a great loop.

Re: [IRCA] Hey...KOKK 1210 was my 40th STATE on Ultralight DX!!

2009-10-16 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
***Congrats on State 40, Rob.*** I've been stuck at 37 in the overall
log, since adding NJ on a DX test a few years back. I am close on
matching the number of ULR states to the number of overall states,
with the ULR @ 32. I've logged SD many times on the overall but zilch
on the ULR one. ND was surprisingly easy as I caught Carrington late at
night, last year. Then I heard 790 through an EB due to the floods,
this past spring.

I'm not sure how many states the OK ULR DX'er has but John Bryant told
me that he had only issued two certificates for 30 states and above - to
Rob and I. :) I'm in good company.

73,
Dave

PS: Just noticed that I don't even have CT (WTIC) in the ULR book but
WFNI's IBOC trashes 1080. This should be easy, if I just try. :)

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-16... Late Boom

2009-10-16 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

What sounded like a modest band prior to 1400 suddenly came alive with
strong Asiatic signals, including the best signals yet this season on 792, 891
and 1125 kHz.

792 kHz was very strong at 1415 with both China-Shanghai and Thailand,
which was identified // to the 891-Thailand station, which was also strong
(mixing with JOHK). 792-Thailand was Ultralight TP #100 here, and a nice MP3
was made of the station mixing with music from China on the 9' PVC box loop.
An MP3 of 891 kHz yesterday also had the same female-voiced Thai
announcer, with the signal dominant over JOHK (either or both MP3's are
available
upon request). Thanks to Derek Vincent for sending his own MP3 of 792 kHz a
month ago, which helped me to sort out these stations.

1125 kHz came up to audio again for brief periods, and is almost certainly
Mandarin Chinese. That makes the 5th UnID Mandarin Chinese station received
on the huge box loop, since it was raised on October 3rd. Since most of
these are near the noise level, it will be very tough to ID them before the
TP season drops out (especially in a mediocre location like Puyallup). 1107

So the band was very exciting with a late TP peak here-- as the 9' loop

Fabulous report, Gary...

I'm sorry to say that I've yet to reattach loop heads, etc. for my

Be sure and turn in your log to Ol' Rob, Sergeant-of-Arms (or is it

An MP3 of 891 kHz yesterday also had the same female-voiced Thai

A good question, J.D. There was no sign on that I was aware of, and at that

[IRCA] Need Antenna Advice

2009-10-16 Thread J.D. Stephens
I am considering buying one of those reel-in type antennas for use with my
Radio Shack DX-398 portable.  I found the following on Ebay, with the brand

It looks to be a copy of the Sangean ANT-60 antenna.  Does anyone know anything
about this brand/type?  Perhaps it's the same thing, just with another brand
name?  Or, it's extremely inferior to the Sangean model?

Hi,

Radios4U is a reputable guy. I have received things from him in the past.
no issues.

My guess is that these reel-ins are all made by the same company and then
they brand them for whoever wants to distribute them. Radio Shack used to
sell them but not sure if they do anymore.

It would be a product that would be pretty hard to mess up I think.

[IRCA] TP for 16 Oct from Victoria, BC

2009-10-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Oh my, bad mistake this morning, didn't start listening until 1408UT, and the
band was boiling. You get a feel for how the band is, which stations are
likely to be heard on a given channel, and they just get more readable as
conditions improve, and if you're lucky, something unusual will start showing
as well. At the time I started listening, somewhat bleary-eyed, it seemed the
rule book had gone out the window. Let's see, two stations plus a jammer on
603, but neither seemed to be the usual Korean, whose parallel was thundering
in on 558that sort of thing. Fortunately I had time today to listen until
past 1445, but things started to fade slowly by 1420UT.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

567 JOIK //594 later on; earlier, this was weaker, and either broadcasting a
different program from 594, or wasn't NHK-1 at all. In fact, the talk sounded
KK to my untutored ear, but no KBS1 parallels available.
594 JOAK w/ something underneath at times; really, this and 774, and later,
972, were in a separate category above this rating. Thunderous.
747 JOIB at 1451UT; best of NHK2 at the time. This seems to have lower
modulation than 774 or 828, relegating it to usually lower readability.
774 JOUB
828 JOBB
972 w/something underneath, massive from 1451 to 1454UT, no fading.
1566 HLAZ, the clear frequency really allows this to shine, undermodulated or
not.
1575 VoA

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

279 R. Rossii
531 JOQG //594
558 KK and JJ as usual, pretty close to darn good audio
603 HLSA // 558 at 1438; earlier it was a jammer and two unID stations
675 Vietnam //weaker 5975; something else underneath; this was also briefly
even better than this just when I started listening
936 mx, likely Anhui, creeping to darn good audio at times
945 CNR-1 //5030 at 1434 o/NHK1 synchros which had dominated at a lower level
earlier
954 JOKR w/JJ talk at 1445
1287 JOHR, pretty consistent

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

153//189 R. Rossii (234 off by this time)
612 JOLK //594 at 1442; a mess earlier
621 two stations and a hum, one station at least seemed CC
738 woman in oriental language not //1143
837 seemed to be //594, so likely JOQK, though the 1 kw Hokkaido repeater can't
be ruled out on a morning like this
864 JJ talk not //1287; lots to choose from
873 JOGB //828 at 1442UT
918 CC talk
963 two stations battling
1008 jammer? (growling sound) plus JONR presumably, with JJ talk
1017 unID mess. Dominant sounded like Tagalog, lots to choose from
1089 CC talk, but otherwise a mess
1188 JOKP //594 at 1439; new for me at home
1134 KK talk //972 earlier, but CNR1 //5030 at 1435UT; wonder if this is a new,
coastal, transmitter? Golmud is a long way inland, near Tibet, but conditions
have been so unusual, anything is possible.
1143 CC and mx assumed to be Taiwan, but not heard on 738
1242 JOLF w/JJ talk
1314 hum plus JOUF
1503 JOUK //594 later on

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

702 a couple mixed with a hum, no luck with IDable material
711 sounded like KK talk, later.
756 maybe Korea, as not //5030; need a consistent KBS1 parallel!
801 hum and ?
819 hum and possible N. Korea
1278 China?
1359 just a mumble
1386 almost certain was //828 for NHK-2
1512 sounded like CC inflected talk
1539 slow mx and woman talking, but no clues?

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

usually, some audio could be winkled out; too busy with them to check out
carriers!

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 16 Oct 2009

2009-10-16 Thread Nigel Pimblett

As others have noted, a pretty decent morning. Highlights for me:

- Russians on 549 and 576, with 549 having some good clear audio
- JOCR on 558 was the best it's been this season
- NHK on 648, again for first time this season
- Someone mixing with the regular Korean on 711
- For the first time I was able to definitely parallel the Chinese on
738 and 1143 from Taiwan. Usually the Korean dominates on 738, and 1143
is tough in the Calgary splatter.

- Some quite clear Chinese audio on 801
- 2 stations mixing on 846
- Good audio again from China on 918, though no echo effect today.
- Chinese dominating 1089
- music and a man speaking on 1161 at 1338. Seemed to have a slight
echo. Not a regular active channel here.
- Heard Alaska on 1170 for the first time this season, when it came up
after 1330 and stayed for nice ID at 1400. Mostly it's been Korea on 1170

- NHK on 1296, another pretty rare visitor
- bits of German again on 1548. One of these days the signal will get
up to the next level!

- Christian sounding music on 1557, presumably Family Radio from Taiwan

[IRCA] Belated Day FOUR Report from Grayland: Oct 14

2009-10-16 Thread John H. Bryant
As was reported elsewhere, Thursday morning showed significant
improvement from our first three days down in Grayland. With Guy's
new QDFA antenna working 100% finally, I'd expect some very nice
loggings when he finishes reviewing all of his Perseus recordings.
Since I still do things the old fashioned way, I can report fairly fully now...

I thought that things were improved, but still not excellent Thursday
morning. For some reason, China seemed to be coming in better than
usual, though kind of spottily. Not all of the regular CCs were at
their usual strength, yet all of my new stations ( I finally got
some) were CNR1 channels... hum.

1170: 1305 UTC, had KPUG, the RKI Korean broadcaster AND CNR1
//5030 all together. I've probably heard this channel before, but I
have just recently started keeping a heard not verified list and
this is a new one there. I also heard this at TOH 1400, with the KPUG
call embedded in this UN meeting.

999:1331UTC. I'm proudest of this reception. I've been
watching 999 all fall and it has always been in low level audio, with
a major hum spike (louder than the audio) on the low side at
998.90. I pretty-well have to be in LSB to dodge the vestigial
signal of semi-local KOMO on 1000, which means that the low side hum
pretty well precludes reception. Once before, I've been able to use
the incomparable notch filter on the Winradio 333 to clobber the hum
spike and recover some audio, even though remaining in LSB because of
KOMO. The previous time the audio was NHK1 synchros from one of two 1
kW. JJs. This time, the real signal was slightly stronger. I set
the notch to be 100 Hz wide and set it on 998.9 and was able to get
fairly decent audio from the 999 signal: it was two stations in
standard CC and one was CNR1 from Heihe, Manchuria. I think that this
is probably the most technically difficult TP reception that I've
ever made. The now always present spike on 998.9 is almost certainly
the big KCBS North Korean, though I've not heard any audio from that
signal this season.

1107: Not a logging - Gary, I listened here quite a bit and had
two stations: one playing music almost continually was the S.Korean
MBC station, I'm pretty certain. The other station there was a JJ synchro.

1134:I enjoyed another UN meeting at 1430 with Japan, South
Korea and my first reception of the CNR1 on 1134. PAL lists this as a
1.2 Megawatt tx in Golmud, Qinghai province, over toward northern
Tibet... the Chinese equivalent on North Dakota, but wedged between
NE Tibet and Mongolia. It is after sunset there, so maybe so??? A new
one for me, where ever it is.

1575:I've been watching 1575 for a while. There is often a
mid-strength spike on the low side (and no North Korean listed g).
I did not decipher that spike, but I did catch the CNR1 transmitter
in Jilin (Manchuria) doing well under VOA Thailand. Another

I should note that CNR1 is playing a lot of Chinese classical music,
often opera, after 1400. It is a real help in IDing //s, especially
if the signal you are watching is far underneath a dominant on that
frequency. Imagine a herd of cats inside a steel drum, with someone
hitting the drum with a ball bat. Sorry if that sounds culturally
insensitive. I was on a national delegation to China at the end of
the Cultural Revolution and had to attend 8 or 10 two-hour
performances (usually on the front row) AND PRETEND TO LIKE THEM.
Earplugs would have been excellent.

In any case, the Chinese opera is a great help in IDing //s of CNR1!!!

John,

Thank you for investigating this 1107 kHz mystery at Grayland. Because of
the frequent American jazz/pop music from this music-oriented station
(similar to 603-HLCA), I was already leaning toward KBS as the probable
identity.
This station has been just above the noise level for about 5 days now, and
