[IRCA] evening TAs

2009-10-22 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Well, yes, there were some, but pretty faint audio at best, fading up from time
to time on 1215, 1377, 1323, and 855. Other than that a number of weak
carriers.

The 160m beacon is back on now, though I'm not too hopeful that the decayed
European conditions will let it through.

best wishes,

Nick

Nick,

At 0616 it is coming in very nicely. Some fades, but pretty stable off
SW EWE. A bit better than the NW/NE EWE. The SW EWE in longer though.

2009-10-22 Thread Bob Coomler
With the Kenwood TS-930 and 80M inverted-L the signal was anywhere between S0
and S3. With the Icom R-75 and Ratzlaff active whip, there was still QSB, but
the signal was always audible and peaking at S5. Wow, dramatic jump at 0602
just as I'm typing typing this. Kick in the supercharger? Good fun! Thanks,

Here in Calgary only JOIB-747 was briefly heard (on the GE Superadio

before a neighbour switched something on that created QRM across the
band making further DX efforts futile...

[IRCA] Bottom Heavy TPs from Orcas Island

2009-10-22 Thread John H. Bryant
Bill Brock mentioned that it was a strange morning, with only the low
stuff working, but that pretty good. Same here. The bottom half of
the band was almost 100% audio sometime during dawn enhancement; the
top half was about as bad as I've seen it in the last two months.
Further, only the lowest 25% from 828 on down had anything above
language recognition level. However, that lower 25% was doing FINE.
The run from 531 thru 639 was universally in the 8s and 9s... the
strongest that I've ever heard that run together.

The nicest thing was I heard a new station at least new to my
Heard-but-not-QSLed list that I'm constructing this year: 630-CNR2
dominating the Seattle station and KJNO in Juneau. The Chinese was
actually stronger than the very strong 6155 parallel during part of
the morning at 1400. In fact all of the hyper-strong activity was
noted in early runs before 1420UTC. 639 was quite strong as CNR1 as
was 756. The lower Koreans were doing very well, too.

So, very frequency-dependent and only the lowest part of the band,
but a new station is ALWAYS a reason to celebrate!

[IRCA] new logging on 1370

2009-10-22 Thread Joseph Miller

First, I tried again to pull in WXXI, and at 6:29 pm local time (Wednesday Oct.
21) I heard news that had that NPR feel to it, with thanks to several sponsors,
the name Renee Montagne (spelling???), and finally the WXXI station ID right
at 6:30. Not new, but infrequent, and first time at sunset.

This morning at 8:00 am, while the car radio was still on the same frequency, I
heard some talk radio, and at TOH was station ID WGOH. Turns out, they are a
5KW daytime station in Grayson KY, with a bearing of 176.9° and distance of 300
miles (approx). I'll have to check my logbook, but I'm quite sure this is new.

Lastly, someone is running a mystery station, as I have heard some popular
music, so I'll go back again tonight, and try again.

[IRCA] Off the grid - A tribute to IRCA

2009-10-22 Thread cafe

On Monday evening, of this week, I was perusing the IRCA
reprints from the the mid-seventies and started writing
a bit of a tribute to the solidarity, brotherhood and sisterhood
of the radio hobby - how it has changed my life and engendered and
fostered lasting friendships.

(And then)Around 8PM my phone rang and I was summoned to a local
hospital to be with a dear family member (my mother-in-law) who succumbed
to a long and exhausting illness.

In the end, she went quickly and peacefully - something we could
only wish for and hopefully achieve in our own personal journey
through life.

What is kind of ironic were my thoughts leading up to that evening
on something as simple as a subscription to a hand-printed newsletter
from the seventies and how, by chance, I requested a free sample so
many years ago - that so many lasting friendships have been cast and hewn
by the fires of time and have resisted every challenge - including
death.

My thanks go out immediately to the local group of DXers and enthusiasts
who immediately joined hands with me that evening - and now to the
rest of you, whose brotherhood and sisterhood grows stronger.

One of the last things my mother-in-law said to me was...
You make sure that you take your wife to Hawaii...

We booked the vacation condo over a year ago and there was much doubt
that we would make that trip scheduled for November. Everyone is
saying the same thing... Go! It is what she would have wanted you to do...

Best wishes, hugs and handshakes to all.

I agree it can be done under some conditions, when everything falls
into place. I've heard both Vatican Radio and Sao Tome et Principe
on 1530, by carefully tweaking things to get channel dominant WCKY
out of the way... but, like 810 out west, 1530 here is an unusually
clear channel if you can get past that one major occupant. However,
most of the clear channels around here are anything but. You peel
away the dominant station, only to reveal more domestic stuff, or
Cubans, or whatever, covering up possible TAs. A particular problem
here on 810 is CJVA, who, I don't mind saying, are cheating like
bandits at night, and have been for years.

PS:  Now IBOC, that's another problem, and
unfortunately it will ruin a good chunk of spectrum.

You bet - channels ruined here number in the dozens! I have enough
manmade noise already, without getting jammed from hundreds of miles
away. :-(

[IRCA] Catching Up- Recent Logs

It's been hectic lately, with my wife in the hospital over the last
few days, but I did manage to get some good ultralight DXing in, so
below is a summation of the last week's logs, all on my various
ultralights barefoot.

October 20
980 WJYK Chase City VA, 0730, heard an ID under WTEM
1220WGNY Newburgh NY, 1800, “Hudson Valley Oldies, AM 1220 and 1490”
1160WJFJ Tyron NC, 1815, heard ID for “WJFJ.com”
930 WLLL Lynchburg VA, 1840, “…central Virginia’s only…AM 930, WLLL”
into Southern Gospel

October 21, 2009
1410WHLN Harlan KY, 0605, probable, mentions of “Kentucky Department
of…” and “…university of…Richmond”, under WPOP
1690WMLB Avondale Estates GA, 0620, “AM 1690, Voice of the Arts”
Jazz-type vocals
1140 UNID, 0645, someone with classical music under WRVA, thought I
heard R. Relog-type time pips, Spanish talk, Cuba?
1130 UNID, 0715, urban gospel music under WBBR, WRRL Rainelle WV or
WEAF Springdale SC?

October 22, 2009
770 WYRV Cedar Bluff VA, presumed, 0630, local ads and announcements,
mentions of Virginia, quickly faded out, no ID

Now at 617 ultralight stations. It's been a very good week!

I am taking a quickie drive up to Portland, Maine this weekend, so I'm
going to check on some New England graveyarders.

[IRCA] TP for 22 Oct from Victoria, BC

2009-10-22 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Had to go to work this morning, so the truncated listening matched the truncated
conditions. But John B.'s observation concerning the dominance of the lower
band held true here also. The only one in the winner's circle this morning that
wasn't one of the NHK powerhouses was, of all stations, 558 HLQH // to a
slightly weaker HLCA-603 just before 1420UT.

There must have been a bit of a lean towards Korea as 711 was also heard quite
well, presumed HLKA, but with something weaker underneath. 711 is normally not
one of the stellar TP channels here. 567 was also a mix of two stations at
times, though wasn't able to snag whatever wasn't JOIK.

So, a little closer to normal TP conditions, but not entirely so.

best wishes,

Nick

2009-10-22 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

There was a definite downturn this morning in TP signal strength here,
especially on the mid-band frequencies like 1107, 1134, 1143 and 1170. Whereas
for the past week 1170 kHz had KBS and the Chinese station seriously
competing with KPUG (and the Indian-language KLOK), this morning KBS was way
down in strength, and the Chinese station was gone.

I checked 594 and 828 for the co-channel TP's reported by many DXers under
the NHK stations, but apparently these co-channels don't like mediocre
conditions. Today's sunrise enhancement sure didn't have much strength, and
the only interesting thing was on 540 kHz, which had a medium-strength
Russian-language station competing with CBK (maybe Radio Mayak?).

Can't complain about the October conditions in general, though. The new 9'
box loop has received 18 new TP's (and 2 new TA's) since being set up on
October 3rd, and has temporarily even made me forget about going to Grayland
:-)

[IRCA] 1040 Vancouver

2009-10-22 Thread bill kral
Does anyone out there know what the final operation plan is at CKST 1040?
Sometimes they're strong here in Vic.like last night,and tonight they're not.It
looks like the testing is still on there.I'm interested in this one for
listening purposes this winter to catch Canucks Hockey games instead of tuning
into a less reliable 1070 relay here in Victoria, and I'm sick of the same old
local ads on C-FAX.Bill in BC
