[IRCA] 100 Mile Diet nice, but it's Chai on the Rock for us

2009-11-17 Thread Chernos Saul

Report from Newfoundland:

After having sushi, kim-chi, and shu-mai for breakfast Monday - a morning with
Japan, Taiwan, NS Korea and China (and unIDs that may take us beyond that), we
enjoyed the 100-mile diet for dinner. Moose stew with root vegetables,
gooseberry jam on toast. With one exception - black tea flavoured with spices
Gandhi might have liked (cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon etc). Rewarded with
954, 918 and maybe others from India. Russian and Chinese music (or so it
seemed to me) on 1521 u/Saudi may be China; plus the easier catches from Sudan,
Botswana and Angola all with good enough signals. Jean Burnell and I agree it
was a fun evening with a band loaded with signals. 675 Norway, some Russians
and Belarussians, etc. And lots from close in, like Spain and the U.K. Afghan
strong 1296. Been trying for equally-powered (I may have the freq wrong as it's
downstairs) national station on 1107. A likely suspect is on tape. Both are in
Kabul and I wonder if they're somehow co-located. Or may!
be deliberately not for security reasons. Anyhow, it's in ther WRTH for any of
you who want to try.

We're pleased to read that cx seem to be favourable. Jim - that was quite a
list. Maybe you'll have something in the morning? We'll look into your uniDs,
particularly the off-frequency ones. We'll have lots of recordings upon our
return. Finland is strong here, but thankfully clears out for as few hours each
night. Carries eclectic stuff but not an easy IDer if one likes an easy solid
definitive ID, I wasted quite a bit of time on that Saturday (albeit while
setting up shop here).

In a few minutes we'll see what Tuesday morning brings. Thank you for varioous
well wishes, we'll respond to all shortly in more individual form. Fun to all...

Saul Chernos

I checked out KOTC while I was just driving.

It was running talk (Dennis Miller) and is still in Kennett. I don't know
what's up with the Memphis move.

It was My Talk 830.

What is up with KOTC 830, Kennett, MO?  Weren't they
 picking up and
 moving to Memphis?
 http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=151192.0

I heard classic rock on 830 and My-830 non-ID's, late
 Saturday
afternoon.  This is KOTC.  They are no longer SS,
 as stated in
Wikipedia.  Very nice classic rock songs!
 Monster signal but sub par
modulation.   Conversely KFUO on 850, also
from MO was putting out a
great signal AND sound.  Both are relogs but new to
 the ULR book.

2009-11-17 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Thanks Mike;

The site that you mentioned is great if you know the lat/lon at both
ends. The dxfm.com spreadsheets are great because you only have to know
yours. The excel file has the lat/lon data populated for the stations.
I believe that he has sheets for US, Canadian, Mexican (IIRC) and a
Western Hemisphere one for most modes (AM, FM and TV). Those are sure
nice to have!

Many of you probably already use it, but for those who don't, this
list

computes distance as the crow flies from point A to point B. It even
has
 my
cabin location listed internally when I type it in. It seems to be
 lacking in

It was interesting to hear multiple stations on some of those

I also did a quick check for TPs between 0530 and 0600 EST this
morning... there were many hets, but not rising to audio levels.
Surprisingly, the most prominent hets were not the big guns like 747

945, but not enough to keep me from heading back to the sack.

Hope the K index stays down at 0!

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Isla: 17 Nov

2009-11-17 Thread John H. Bryant
This is the first year since we have been spending 6 months out
here that we have not left for Oklahoma on Monday, almost two weeks
before Thanksgiving (yesterday). This year, we are leaving on
Tuesday, December 2, so I've two more weeks to appreciate the late
season conditions. Speaking of which, the main season sure went by
in a hurry, didn't it??? Wow, about 6 to 8 weeks, with Japan
dominant the first half and China dominant the second. It's enough
to get ya to buy a Perseus, eh?

To today: I was a really decent late TP morning here... particularly
good at the lowest end early and a real dawn-post-dawn enhancement,
especially up high. The most interesting stuff:

909: was JOCB, NHK2 at 1525

1377: Was walking tall all morning, still very solid at shutdown,
1535. LSR = 1525

1386: NHK Synchros was in well 1530, as were 1431, 1485, 1494, 1503
(huge!), 1512, 1548 was in at 1530UT but 1550 kHz is so strong,
1566 very under mod., and 1575.

I spent most of my time on 1575. It was more Farda than it was VOA.
At 1500, it was Farda all the way and they did not ID. Was
traditional Persian (pres,) instrumental mx until about 1502 and then
a woman talking softly in presumed Persian. Music resumed about 1504.
At times after 1500, I could hear VOA underneath, with a man talking,
but I do not think that it was EE.

I'd have loved to ID both 1485 and 1494. They were both small JJ
commercial outlets. I'm pretty sure that 1494 was JOTL, one of the
HBC feeders on Hokkaido. The next time that I hear it, I'll try to
//1287. I was not smart enough this time!!

E-MAIL:

Harry Lee Helms, Jr., my first cousin and good friend, passed away on

As you probably know, he has bravely fought an aggressive cancer for
the last several years. For the past few months he and his wife Di

his extended family, old friends, and his dogs and cats.

I asked Harry recently how I could be useful to him in the final

came. I probably do not know you personally, but I know that you
have to be a special sort of person to make the list. Please know

Sorry to hear about Harry.  Although I never met him in person, I corresponded
with off on for 40 years.  He was quite a guy.  Thanks, John, for passing
along the information and email from his cousin.

I have very bad news. I received this e-mail from Cheryl Ervin Hill.

George Zeller
Cleveland, OH

E-MAIL:

Harry Lee Helms, Jr., my first cousin and good friend, passed away on
Sunday, November

15th, around 11:00 pm. He was 57.

As you probably know, he has bravely
fought an aggressive cancer for
the last several years. For the past few
months he and his wife Di
have lived in his home town of Fort Mill, SC,
surrounded and loved by his extended family, old friends, and his dogs and cats.

I asked Harry recently how I could be useful to him in the final
days, so he sent me a short list of friends to contact when the end
came. I probably do not know you personally, but I know that you
have to be a special sort of person to make the list. Please know
that this message is an act of love from Harry to you at the end of
his amazing life.

We ask that you remember him now as you knew him in years past. I
believe that he would have me remind you to recognize your life's
passion and let it guide you always.

Our family will gather together
informally later this week to find
some closure for ourselves and to wish
him peace.

Harry was one of a kind. We will miss him

greatly.

[IRCA] TP for 17 Nov from Victoria, BC

2009-11-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
It was perhaps a better morning today, though signals were still erratic, and
not much at a really good level. And although I did hear Farda on 1575, it
wasn't nearly as steady as John found. And of course, hearing stuff on channels
like 1494 was not even in the ballpark...Listened from about 1445 to 1520UT.

Darn good audio (at least at peaks):

594 JOAK
639 CNR-1 after 1455UT
774 JOUB
828 JOBB

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash or
noise):

279 R. Rossii
936 Anhui at 1456UT
972 HLCA but only after 1501UT
1287 JOHR
1575 VoA

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

567 JOIK //594
747 JOIB
1134 not //972, sounded JJ
1575 R. Farda briefly at 1454UT on North Flag

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

189 presumed Rossii
531 JOQG //594
585 JOPG //594
702 hum and N. Korea
738 may have been //1143
981 seemed //5030 at 1520UT, so CNR-1
1143 seemed //738
1188 at 1514UT
1278 later on
1377 didn't seem //5030
1386 seemed //774, so NHK2
1503 JOUK //594 at 1515

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

675, 864, 1323, 1422 1566

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-17...Somewhat Better

2009-11-17 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

While a definite improvement over the last 3 days, the morning's TP
propagation here seemed closer to Nick's observation than John's. The signals
were fairly good on the powerhouse stations, but nothing new was logged, and
nothing much out of the ordinary was heard. The sunrise enhancement didn't
really enhance TP's very much, a typical late November issue.

The weird co-channel stations on 594 (Chinese and Korean), 603 (Chinese),
828 (Chinese) and 972 kHz (Chinese) seemed to have gone back below the
noise level this morning, leaving the NHK and Korean powerhouse stations
unchallenged on their frequencies. These obscure co-channels really haven't
been
around in force for quite a few days now, and may have already had their
best levels of the season.

Like Nick, I detected weak audio on 1503 kHz from a presumed JOUK around
1445, but the signal wasn't strong enough to check a parallel. Other
attempts to find new TP's were equally unsuccessful, but at least the band had
some signs of real life (unlike the 3 previous days). With a temporary break
in the back yard's rainy and windy weather, a new experimental 7.5' sided
PVC tuned passive loop optimized for the high band frequencies was tested
out, and worked well. It should provide some fun this winter in TA chasing.

73, Gary DeBock

Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick)
Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5 Slider loopstick +
CFJ455K5 IF filter)
9' and 7.5' (side) PVC tuned passive loops (in the back yard)

Re: [IRCA] Harry Helms Passes

2009-11-17 Thread amdxmail
Saddened to hear this. He was the first DXer I ever wrote. I'd
received a sample copy of DX Monitor in March of 1970 and noticed his
submissions. I asked him in a letter if he could recommend a good
receiver as I'd decided to become a DXer like the other guys (and one
gal) in that issue of DXM. He replied and recommended Radio Shack's
Realistic TRF, mentioning good results Bruce Bacon and George Sherman,
among others, were having with it. I've often shuddered to think what
overpriced mediocrities I might have sprung for without his advice, as
I knew nothing about electronics. He was only a high school senior
then. A DXer's friend indeed.

[IRCA] DXing from the South Pacific 16 Nov2009

2009-11-17 Thread Walter Salmaniw
*/Dxing report from the South Pacific (sailing toward Tonga) for
November 16, 2009:/*

Hello, everyone! We’re now 2 days outbound from The Bay of Islands, New
Zealand and bound for Tonga. During these at-sea days, there’s more time
and energy to do some serious DXing and that’s exactly what I’ve been
doing. On November 16^th , I concentrated on the 9 kHz channels, whereas
last night it was the 10 kHz channels. A lot of what I heard I’ve
recorded with a running mp3 recorder (iRiver 795T). The MW noise from
the ship, at least at the aft end is remarkably absent and using Gary’s
modified eton e100 with the Murata filter and large ferrite rod
(tuneable) has enabled me to do some good Dxing in a very small package.
It’s rather fun sitting in the semi-dark with ear buds holding my tiny
receiver and rotating it this way and that. Have had a few people ask
what I was up to, though! Of course on the first night, New Zealand
dominated. I’m surprised by the huge number of transmitters carrying the
same program (especially the Newstalk ZB network, and to a lesser extent
New Zealand’s Rhema, Southern Star, and Radio New Zealand National. They
sure get out. Don’t bother with legal local IDs. Instead they all seem
to carry local ads which easily ID the station and location. I simply
made notes, and later went through my loggings and was usually able to
ID the station with the help of PAL. Thanks, Bruce and David for that!
Here we go for Nov 16^th . Assume approximately the same time as the
previous loggings as I pretty much systematically went from 531 upwards:

531 08:42 531PI in Auckland with 5 kw in presumed Samoan mentioning
Easter Island and then an English ad for an appliance store in Hunter’s
Corner, and other English ads. Excellent. Weaker cochannel with music.

549: 09:00 Rhema from Kaltaia, Northland with 2 kW and cochannel Radio
Trackside 1 kW from Napier.

558: Radio Fiji 1, Naulu 10 kW with Trackside Sport ID at 10:50 (listed
as Radio Sport, Invercargill 5 kW…note the different ID). I was
surprised how well the Invercargill and Dunedin stations came in.

567: Radio NZ National, Wellington with 50 kW. Very strong at 09:06.

576: The Word, Hamilton with 2.5 kW with religious programming and
weaker cochannel, presumed ABC Sydney with 50 kW.

585: unid oldies

594: unid with modern pop music

603: unid modern soul music.

612: unid , // 594 and 621. This is either ABC Brisbane (with the others
being 3WV Horsham and ABC Melbourne) or possibly Rhema. Not sure.

630: Radio NZ National, Napier-Hastings with 10 kW with NZ news re
Wellington bus accidents. // to 639 (weak) 2 kW from Alexandra, Otago.

648: 10:51 ID for NZ’s Rhema. Very strong. From Gisborne, 5 kW.

657: strong pop music, and EZL music. Presumed Southern Star, Wellington
with 50 kW.

666: RFO, New Caledonia. 20 kW, Noumea. Very good reception with lots of
French talk (Bonsoir, bonsoir, bonsoir….). //729 barely audible. At
09:59, heard cochannel ABC jingle to TOH, making this 2CN, ABC Canberra
with 5 kW. Later on at 11:02:40 noted “RFO” ID at excellent level.

675: Radio NZ National, Christchurch 10 kW. NZ weather. Excellent.

684: 2KP ABC mid-North Coast, Kempsey 10kW. Call in program discussing
the Rural Parks Service, fires. Phone # given as 1300 222 …

690: possibly KHNR, Honolulu with 10 kW. Thought I might have heard CBC,
but not sure (which would have made in CBU, Vancouver). Fair reception.

693: Radio Sport, Dunedin 5 kW discussing Nigeria’s disqualification
from the world cup.

702: Radio Live, Auckland 10 kW cochannel

711: Radio Trackside, Wellington 5 kW with sport play by play with het.
Fair reception.

720: Radio NZ National, Invercargill 10 kW with talk program at good level.

729: Radio Sport, Wangarei 2.5 kW discussing rugby

738: Radio Live with ID at excellent level. Christchurch 5 kW. Ad giving
a phone number as: 0-800-CONTAINER, and ID as “Christchurch 99.3 FM”. No
sign of Tahiti.

747: 2 cochannels at poor/fair level.

750: KFQD, Anchorage at fair level at 09:28 with ID as, “Newstalk KFQD”.
Happy to hear this one at this distance!

756: Radio NZ National, Auckland 10 kW. With call-in about the future of
music at good level, with a weaker cochannel music station.

765: unid with pop music ?Napier?

774: Radio Sport, New Plymouth 5 kw with talk about ball control, and
cochannel ABC Melbourne 50 kW.

783: Access Radio, Wellington 10 kW. Very strong with music.

792: Radio Sport, Hamilton 5 kW with talk about a player needing
shoulder surgery.

810: Radio NZ National, Dunedin 10 kW. Very good reception, // 819 also
very good from Tauranga with 10 kW. Also weak cochannel with music.
Discussing building a business using the internet.

828: Radio Trackside, Palmerston-North 2 kW. Fair with sports, and
cochannel too.

837: Radio NZ National, with 2 transmitters in the Northland at 2 and
2.5 kW. Excellent reception with NZ business.

846: 2 cochannels at fair level.

[IRCA] South Pacific DXing for 17Nov09

2009-11-17 Thread Walter Salmaniw
*/Dxing report from the South Pacific (sailing toward Tonga) for
November 17, 2009:/*

*/ /*

Listened again last night after an absolutely gorgeous sunset. Didn’t
catch the “green flash” that’s sometimes visible in equatorial areas the
moment the sun’s disk drops below the horizon (we saw that the previous
night), but it was more than made up for with the glorious cloud
pattern. After cool and drizzly weather the night before as we left New
Zealand, last night was very comfortable and dry. Unfortunately, there
appeared to be more static. I concentrated on 10 kHz channels, hoping
for North America and did hear a number. Overall, I didn’t think
conditions were as good as the previous night, though. I also jumped
around a bit. Mostly, I started at 1700 this time and worked down.

801: Not heard the previous night, but this is Rhema from Nelson with
1.6 kW. ID noted for Rhema around 07:15. After Insight for living, noted
ads for Hastings and Christchurch, and Affordable Taxation Services in
Auckland.

1580: Probably the most fascinating frequency of the evening. Mostly
dominated by Radio Disney (which should be KMIK, Tempe AZ with 50 kW) at
good level at 07:38. Later faded to be replaced with a SS station at
good level with phone # mentioned at 08:04. Again Radio Disney ID at
08:58. Best heard aiming pretty much N/S. Not sure how to explain that!

1540: Initially I thought that I was hearing French here. Mostly EZL
music and talk by OM. I’ll need to recheck the mp3 file for this one!

1500: KUMU, Honolulu with 10 kW with ads for Hawaiian Telecom and a
condo development. Good level early in the evening.

1150: Interesting station as they had a call-in show with a toll-free
number at 07:55. At that moment, the announcer said: “You’re NOT the
rest of the world”, and then silence. The signal disappeared. Sure like
to know who they were. Did not return while I waited for a couple of
minutes.

1020: Spanish station at fair to good level at 08:07 with 2 men talking,
mentioning “economica”.

580: Another very interesting channel. I could hear around 08:16 2 men
with conversation of a religious nature. Could this be Petersburg, AK,
or KJAL, Tafuna? Help needed here!

558: Radio Fiji 1 at very good level at 08:28. I’m able to hear all the
listed // as well:

639 (poor/fair….interesting, as this is usually the one I hear in
Victoria), 684 (good),

927 ( poor/fair), and 1152 (fair). No sign of the Radio Fiji 2
transmissions, though!

1017: Tonga at good level at 08:34

666: RFO Noumea at good level at 08:41. This time, I was able to hear
729 at poor/fair level by nulling the NZ station.

1640: fair to good level.

1540: “Sea levels are rising”, and discussing Hawaii, but the listed
Hawaiian is in KK. Not sure who this is.

1050: This one is interesting. An ESPN station (ESPN Radio ID at 09:30).
At 09:28 I thought I heard “KAIR” ID, but doesn’t match the frequency.
Any ideas here? Thanks!

I also heard numerous channels, but virtually all at just threshold
levels, and so no point in recording them here. A few SW loggings (sorry
for the OT):

3945: Radio Vanuatu at very good level in Bislama. ID at 08:36 as,
“Radio Vanuatu, Voice of the ?People”.

5020: SIBC with local messages at 08:37. Good modulation, but a growl
noted as well.

That was it for last night….cut it short about an hour earlier than the
previous evening. We’ll see how things go tonight. Take care! …….Walt

*/Dxing report from the South Pacific (sailing toward Tonga) for

 November 16, 2009:/*

Hello, everyone! We’re now 2 days outbound from The Bay of Islands, New

 Zealand and bound for Tonga.

Good work Walt - you are working way harder than I am!

I keep trying different deployments of the ALA100M
as there is a 12kv line about 160 feet away
and with all the salt spray here, there is an s4 to s9
level of frying static across 1/2 the MW band
and the entire LW band...
Sometimes it subsides after midnight.
There is also TVI across the MW band and a good part of SW
and this also vanishes after midnight -
cap that off with a variety of hash noises that are
likely old style light dimmers.

I have gone down by the pool quite a few times
and it is very very quiet there.
10 more days and then home to the rain.

Walt,

Thanks for your two reports. Very interesting. Comments:

1580: Probably the most fascinating frequency of the evening.
Mostly dominated by Radio Disney (which should be KMIK, Tempe AZ
with 50 kW) at good level at 07:38. Later faded to be replaced with
a SS station at good level with phone # mentioned at 08:04. Again
Radio Disney ID at 08:58. Best heard aiming pretty much N/S. Not
sure how to explain that!
KBLA (then KDAY) was among the first West Coast stations to pop in
when I was out in the Pacific

1020: Spanish station at fair to good level at 08:07 with 2 men
talking, mentioning “economica”.

KTCT calls itself KNBR (as I recall). However, it is Fox Sports
(KNBR-680 is ESPN).

Absolutely wonderful to read that log,
Walter!!! I've heard a number of outlets of all
of those networks. It was really a thrilling
read. I'll keep this one for sure. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

I've sure been looking for FF on 666 for New
Caledonia for the past several years. I've heard
them twice before on the last solar cycle, but
they failed to QSL., Good to hear that they are
getting out. We'll be looking for them next
season, too. I'll bet that you and Wanda LOVED
New Zealand, as most everyone, especially from the NW, does.

Please keep sending us stuff.

You have not missed anything weather-wise
here. The entire month has been just as we tell
the tourists. We have had less than an hour of
direct sunlight since late October half
today, between storms. I'm learning the difference in weather forecasts:

Showers with Sun Breaks; Scattered or Occasional
Showers; Showers; Scattered Rain; Rain; Heavy
Rain; Storms (means the wind is blowing HARD) may
be used in tandem with any of the other 6
forecasts. They actually look you in the eye on
TV and argue between just which one of those 6 it was, today!

Even Arizona may look a little better after a
full month of the above six forecasts :)

lot of what I heard I’ve recorded with a running
mp3 recorder (iRiver 795T). The MW noise from
the ship, at least at the aft end is remarkably
absent and using Gary’s modified eton e100 with
the Murata filter and large ferrite rod
(tuneable) has enabled me to do some good Dxing
in a very small package. It’s rather fun sitting
in the semi-dark with ear buds holding my tiny
receiver and rotating it this way and that. Have
had a few people ask what I was up to, though!
Of course on the first night, New Zealand
dominated. I’m surprised by the huge number of
transmitters carrying the same program
(especially the Newstalk ZB network, and to a
lesser extent New Zealand’s Rhema, Southern
Star, and Radio New Zealand National. They sure
get out. Don’t bother with legal local IDs.
Instead they all seem to carry local ads which
easily ID the station and location. I simply
made notes, and later went through my loggings
and was usually able to ID the station with the
help of PAL. Thanks, Bruce and David for that!
Here we go for Nov 16^th . Assume approximately
the same time as the previous loggings as I
pretty much systematically went from 531 upwards:

531 08:42 531PI in Auckland with 5 kw in
presumed Samoan mentioning Easter Island and
then an English ad for an appliance store in
Hunter’s Corner, and other English ads. Excellent. Weaker cochannel with music.

549: 09:00 Rhema from Kaltaia, Northland with 2
kW and cochannel Radio Trackside 1 kW from Napier.

558: Radio Fiji 1, Naulu 10 kW with Trackside
Sport ID at 10:50 (listed as Radio Sport,
Invercargill 5 kW…note the different ID). I was
surprised how well the Invercargill and Dunedin stations came in.

567: Radio NZ National, Wellington with 50 kW. Very strong at 09:06.

576: The Word, Hamilton with 2.5 kW with
religious programming and weaker cochannel, presumed ABC Sydney with 50 kW.

585: unid oldies

594: unid with modern pop music

603: unid modern soul music.

612: unid , // 594 and 621. This is either ABC
Brisbane (with the others being 3WV Horsham and
ABC Melbourne) or possibly Rhema. Not sure.

630: Radio NZ National, Napier-Hastings with 10
kW with NZ news re Wellington bus accidents. //
to 639 (weak) 2 kW from Alexandra, Otago.

648: 10:51 ID for NZ’s Rhema. Very strong. From Gisborne, 5 kW.

657: strong pop music, and EZL music. Presumed
Southern Star, Wellington with 50 kW.

666: RFO, New Caledonia. 20 kW, Noumea. Very
good reception with lots of French talk
(Bonsoir, bonsoir, bonsoir….). //729 barely
audible. At 09:59, heard cochannel ABC jingle to
TOH, making this 2CN, ABC Canberra with 5 kW.
Later on at 11:02:40 noted “RFO” ID at excellent level.

675: Radio NZ National, Christchurch 10 kW. NZ weather. Excellent.

684: 2KP ABC mid-North Coast, Kempsey 10kW. Call
in program discussing the Rural Parks Service,
fires. Phone # given as 1300 222 …

690: possibly KHNR, Honolulu with 10 kW. Thought
I might have heard CBC, but not sure (which
would have made in CBU, Vancouver). Fair reception.

Hello Walt,

Thanks for that great DX report from the South Pacific, with extremely
useful information for every Grayland summertime DU-chaser. Like John, I plan
to save your post as an essential archive for Kiwi station information, and
appreciate the time and effort that you used to compile it for us (and
others).

I'm very happy that your modified E100 is bringing in some nice DX, which
reminds me of my Navy days DXing in the South Pacific in 1975 (although it
wasn't exactly a pleasure cruise). The ocean propagation never ceased to
amaze me, and it's obvious that you are enjoying similar results.

Have fun during the rest of the cruise, and thanks again for the very
informative DX report.

Re: [IRCA] Harry Helms Passes

2009-11-17 Thread Chuck Hutton

A sad piece of news. I felt a bit connected to Harry over the years as we were
both high school members of NRC in the 60's - he in Fort Mill SC and me a
recent Chicago transplant to Atlanta. Later on, Harry's technical writing led
him into areas related to what I do for a living so I occasionally kept up with
him.

But what I admired most about Harry was how he wrote about his ordeals in an
emotionally open way, but still remaining very calm. He refused to hide
anything or fall prey to any of the dishonesties that are often easier to say.
He also managed to convey his feelings about his disease in a way that made me
respect his strength and never feel he was feeling too sorry for himself
althugh he had a right to feel that way.

I will remember Harry and wish he was still here.

Saddened to hear this. He was the first DXer I ever wrote. I'd

This sad news found on SWBC DXPlorer list about one of my all-time DX
Hobby heroes. Valiant fight; heroic to the end.

I have very bad news. I received this e-mail from Cheryl Ervin Hill.

 E-MAIL:

Harry Lee Helms, Jr., my first cousin and good friend, passed away on
Sunday, November 15th, around 11:00 pm. He was 57.

As you probably know, he has bravely fought an aggressive cancer for
the last several years. For the past few months he and his wife Di
have lived in his home town of Fort Mill, SC, surrounded and loved by
his extended family, old friends, and his dogs and cats.

I asked Harry recently how I could be useful to him in the final
days, so he sent me a short list of friends to contact when the end

Our family will gather together informally later this week to find
some closure for ourselves and to wish him peace.

Harry was one of a kind. We will miss him greatly.

[IRCA] Weather update

2009-11-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't posted for the past few days, but I have had a
houseguest and been involved with other things.
We came through the storm well. No damage. Winds were around 90 MPH.
Newport, 100 miles South hit 98 MPH.
Another storm will be hitting us Wednesday into Thursday with more rain
(Astoria got nearly 3 inches in 24 hours with the one Monday) with wind
maybe up to 70 MPH. A walk in the park for us though. Those 90+ MPH
winds are a bit rougher. But the one in Dec 07 was the doozy with gusts
of 137 MPH here.
The old city hall in Seaside, the roof blew off and bricks all over.
Fortunately no one was present.
The Summer's here are 180 degrees different than the Winters. During
the 2006 IRCA convention in Sept we had 86 degrees and a cloud free sky.

73,

Patrick
