[IRCA] Denver news
Word has come through that KCKK/1510 Littleton/Denver has been sold to 4-K's LLLP for $450,000. This is the NRC Broadcasting station that I previously worked for and that we spent over $1M on rebuilding with a new transmitter site in 2006 and 2007. Ironically the new FCC license came through about the same time as the sale authorizing an increase in power from 9.5 kw day/19 kw night to 10 kw day/25 kw night. The night signal primarily protects the 50 kw legacy stations in Spokane and Nashville. BTW I am in the process of moving to Parker CO which will place me about 2 miles from the KOA transmitter. I expect to be off of the internet for a couple weeks most likely ditching my WebTV service and returning on hi speed DSL with a real computer. Re: [IRCA] Talking House
I have a talking house (Radio Realty brand) that I have had for quite a few years. It has front panel digital frequency selection. I used it to tune my analog GE SRIII to a specific frequency since the slide rule dial on the SRIII was just a guessing game. I'd set the transmitter to the frequency I wanted, peak tune the SRIII to the center of the frequency, turn the transmitter off, and the SRIII was perfectly tuned. The transmitter has a front panel peaking capacitor and a meter to allow you to tune to maximum output power on the selected frequency. It has a thick flexible rubber coated wire antenna coming out of the back. Ideally you would sit it near a window in the house you were selling, hang the antenna over a curtain rod, plug in a tape recorder, and let it run. I actually considered starting a small part-time business of renting these out to local realtors and setting them up on site about 10 years ago when the housing market was good. I once saw one of these in use at a self serve car wash to give instructions to the customers. Anyone ever see them used in businesses other than real estate? [IRCA] TIS Update
I noticed that the Information Station Specialists (ISS) web site has recently updated the list of TIS stations installed by them. This very useful list can be found at www.theradiosource.com/ The ISS web site also has a very interesting list of National Parks with TIS stations. It shows the very hard to find NTIA issued 3x3 call signs for most of them. An interesting item of note it appears that Yellowstone National Park has about 25 TIS stations each with a separate call sign but all transmitting on 1610 kHz. Also of note for those visiting HI there is a TIS at the USS Arizona memorial. It is listed as KOJ799 on 1670 kHz. The ISS web site is a plethora of interesting information. I have spent many hours looking through it. Check out the main menu on the home page. Re: [IRCA] WBZ IBOC is OFF!
Still on the backup rig tonight, but they've drifted down a bit, to 1030.014. Barry /// Just out of curiosity I wonder if WBZ runs Power-Side on the backup transmitter? I know a lot of stations that had Power-Side before IBOC came along kept it on their backup rigs (KPOF/910 for example). Perhaps I should pose this as a question to the more technically experienced engineer types on the list (Mark Durenberger where are you?). Since Power-Side concentrates the audio into one of the two sidebands of the carrier frequency, would that make the signal appear to be slightly off frequency toward whichever sideband is being used? I know that on an analog radio receiving a station using Power-Side you get the best sound by tuning slightly off frequency to one sideband or another. The carrier frequency should not be effected by Power-Side. But I believe that the apparent center of bandwidth for the overall mask of the transmitted signal would be shifted one way or another. At KCKK/1510 we have Power-Side and we run it slanted toward the lower sideband to help us stay further away from the audio of the 1520 adjacent channel blowtorch in OKC. Re: [IRCA] Sort of On-Topic radio announcement...
A neighbor who was a very active HF band amateur radio operator sparked my interest in radio in 1965 when I was 13. I never saw him use code. He always used voice in AM or sideband mode. I still remember sitting in his northern Illinois ham shack one Saturday evening and being allowed to talk to an amateur who was maritime mobile on a private yacht in the Caribbean. I tried for many years to get an amateur license but could not master the code. Over the years I probably purchased every code learning aid that was available. As an adult I eventually discovered that I was slightly dyslexic and that was why I couldn't learn the code. I often wonder how much I lost in my life because of that ridiculous and outdated code requirement. When the code requirement was finally eliminated for VHF and above (could that have been almost 16 years ago now?) I was one of the very first no-code techs to be licensed. And, more recently, when code was finally eliminated for the HF class licenses I was one of the very first to upgrade. I am proud to be a code free General class licensee. And I am planning to upgrade soon. MORSE CODE SUCKS! Re: [IRCA] KNRV AM-1150 to drop local programming
The 1150 in Denver, Colorado and the 1190 in Phoenix, AZ have just been listed for sale. Might that be the main reason for any change at these two stations ??? // Mike I heard that too. This is the result of what is going on - not the cause. Apparently the stockholders have had enough of the low ratings and resulting low income. The 1150 in Denver would be a nice property if the night signal were a little stronger (currently 1 kw). The transmitter plant was completely rebuilt about 3 years ago when my employer (NRC Broadcasting) owned the station. Virtually everything there is new except for the towers themselves which were in excellent shape. The transmitter is HD capable. You may recall that NRC operated the HD for 1 week and then shut it off due to interference complaints from the 1170 station in Windsor CO. The HD has been off ever since. The current studios for 1150 are only about 1 year old. I haven't seen them so I have no idea what they are like. I heard unofficially that the asking price is $2M. Re: [IRCA] KNRV AM-1150 to drop local programming
Chris Knight said: According to the Federal Census Bureau (via local TV newscast), the Hispanic population in Denver comprises more than 50% of the total population. // Chris, you must be very careful when reading the Census Bureau results. There are many caveats to consider. Also consider that the census results for Denver (population 588,349 at the July 1, 2007 estimate) only represent about 24% of the Denver Metro population (2,464,866). The 2006 census indicated that 82.8% of the population of Denver is white and 34.8% is Hispanic or Latino. Read directly those two groups alone add up to 117.6%. The sometimes misleading caveat in the census statistics is that Hispanics and Latinos can also be counted as part of any race (white, black, etc). The same is true for any other ethnic group. For example, there are white and black Asians. The 82.8% white statistic should include members of all of the groups who consider themselves as white. [IRCA] KNRV AM-1150 to drop local programming
The Denver Business Journal reported today that Denver radio station KNRV-AM will drop its Spanish-language local news and sports programming and instead carry a national satellite feed from Radio Formula Satellite Network beginning August 1st. In a statement, Heberto Villers-Limas, station president and CEO of station owner New Radio Venture Inc., said his painful decision to discontinue local programming had nothing to do with the results of the radio operations, but rather is the result of a conflict between the station and shareholders. He did not elaborate. Another New Radio Venture Spanish station, KNUV-AM In Phoenix, plans to close down at the end of July, The Associated Press reported Tuesday, saying investors decided to pull the plug in the wake of advertising budget cuts. New Radio Venture will be dissolved in coming months, Villers-Limas said, but he hopes to form a new company. On the whole, stations targeting the Latino market have been doing well in Denver. I've been checking KEPN/1600 for several days and as Chris noted sometimes the IBOC on 1590 is barely even noticeable. I believe KDDZ is also running IBOC. This tower is 358 feet tall which is 210.8 degrees at 1600 and 222.6 degrees at 1690. I was surprised that KEPN didn't lease one of the 3 shorter towers to KDDZ. The other 3 towers at that site are 184 feet tall and are only used in the night pattern for KEPN. Re: [IRCA] att sites
John Sampson said: Missed the first part of this thread but this aroused my curiosity. Was this a spur off of the old ATT backbone microwave network? /// John (and all who are interested), Buckhorn Mountain was an ATT microwave site linking Broomfield, Greeley, and Timnath in CO and Cheyenne and Crow Creek Hill (Laramie) in WY. It was part of the first transcontinental microwave network. The Timnath site linked to the Longmont site which John mentioned. At Longmont the radio path intersected the L4 hardened coax route which linked Denver and Platte Junction WY. Platte Junction was an underground site on the east-west transcontinental cable route. The Longmont site is very visible to anyone travelling on I-25 between Denver and Fort Collins as it is right next to the highway at what is known locally as Mead Mountain or Mead Hill. The CDOT TIS station on 530 kHz that IDs as Mead is also located at that point. The ATT microwave equipment at this site has been removed. But the tower is intact and still in use for mobile telephone and two-way radio. The large building is externally intact. Re: [IRCA] CBS FM HD antenna tower Portland Oregon (OT)
Paul Walker said: Woah, $1million for an Antenna? Im no engineer, but that seems very very steep to me. $1 mil is probably for the entire HD conversion for all 5 stations. // $1 million does not surprise me at all Paul. A lot of stations spend far more than that on new antenna projects. He is probably talking about the entire antenna project - not just the antenna itself. He mentioned a tower with an elevator in it. And you must consider all of the ancillary equipment. And there may even be a structure included in that price. Antenna projects can be very expensive. When a couple of suburban FM stations decided to back door into the Denver market a couple years ago they built a 2,000 foot tower on the very rural prairie 45 miles east of Denver. In order to secure approval from the county commissioners to build the tower they had to also agree to fund construction of a new control tower for the Front Range Airport which is 30 miles away from the antenna tower. It is the tallest control tower in the US. What do you think that antenna project cost? When my current employer built the new transmitter site for KCKK-AM, which is on county wildland property, they had to also agree to fund construction of a new office and maintenance garage facility for the county highway department. That antenna project cost about $3 million. When my employer moved 105.5 into the northeast CO market they bought a historic former ATT Long Lines microwave relay site on top of Buckhorn Mountain west of Fort Collins for the antenna facility. This was originally one of the relay stations on ATTs first transcontinental microwave system. It is at 8,300 feet above sea level. This is a huge two-story facility that was built during the cold war era. It was hardened against bomb blasts and had decontamination shower facilities at the entrances. It held living quarters and mess hall facilities for an entourage of resident technicians. It contained a fully operational backup generator powered by a diesel locomotive engine. And it had one of those huge 4-leg towers next to it that was typical of the microwave relay towers of the era. The line of site coverage from here is amazing. With binoculars on a clear day you can see well into WY and incredibly far out onto the eastern CO plains. I'm estimating that the facility has about 20,000 square feet of floor space. Our equipment probably occupies about 2% of the structure. Another very expensive antenna project. BTW there is some interesting historic information and photos of this facility from 1955 and 1975 at http://long-lines.net/places-routes/Buckhorn-Mtn/index.html. Re: [IRCA] Quite possibly the smallest licensed radio station...
In my 1971 edition of Vane Jones' North American Radio-TV Station Guide there were 31 stations licensed on 88.1 with a transmitter power of 10 watts or less. Only one was listed as being stereo capable. 88.1 to 91.9 was, with very few exceptions, reserved exclusively for educational stations in the US. My recollection is that many of the stations that were licensed for 10 watts actually ran less power. I know that one 10 watt station at a small college in my area actually ran 1 watt into a single horizontal bay at about 5 feet HAAT. I believe that type acceptance could be waived in lieu of an FCC inspection for the low power educational stations. Re: [IRCA] Denver radio question....
I heard 1510 was silent again because the check bounced. Is that true? /// Not true - mostly. There was an incident a few weeks ago. I can tell you that the LMA is now on a weekly basis since the current lessee failed to get financing for the purchase of the station. I was instructed to install a CD player in the audio chain at the transmitter site and to provide some alternate programming in case of future payment problems. I also know that another broadcast entity with a number of stations nationwide is interested in 1510 as their first Denver station and has hired an engineering consultant to check it out. One of their concerns is that 1510 is still operating under a CP/STA while the proof of performance measurements are in progress. The latest estimate on that is another 6 to 8 weeks depending on the weather and other factors. We lost 3 days of work on it this week because of weather. But it was 55 and dry here today. For now KCKK is still Mile High Sports Radio and // KSXT is still The Sports Extra. I have noticed some diversity in their programming lately with a live news hour at noon on weekdays and a financial program on Saturday morning. They have also added former Denver Broncos cheerleader Renee Herlocker to their air staff. Herlocker is quite stunning. She was featured on the cover of 5280 magazine about a year ago as a local person who has trouble dating because of the time constraints in her busy lifestyle. At that time her occupation was listed as marketing associate. I don't think they hired her for her rather gritty sounding voice talents if you know what I mean. [IRCA] OT - TV station destroyed by fire
The historic building housing the studios and offices for KREX-TV in Grand Junction CO was destroyed by fire today. The fire broke out around 8:30 AM and was still burning at 5:00 PM. [IRCA] KCFR Denver to move from AM to FM leaving 1340 for sale
From the Denver Business Journal: KCFR, Colorado Public Radio's news-and-information channel, is moving back to the high-fidelity FM band with the purchase of a new frequency for the station. The main reasons for the change are better [audio] quality and the fact that most people expect to find public radio on the left hand side of the FM dial, Max Wycisk, president of Centennial-based Colorado Public Radio (CPR), said Wednesday. CPR plans to purchase Denver station 88.1 FM from EMF Broadcasting of Rocklin, Calif., for $8.2 million. The 88.1 signal currently carries Christian music under the brand K-LOVE. CPR said it will move its KCFR news channel from 1340 AM to 90.1 FM, the frequency now used by its classical-music station, KVOD. KVOD would then slide down the FM dial to 88.1 FM. CPR plans to put its 1340 AM frequency up for sale. The changes will take effect this spring, subject to Federal Communications Commission approval, CPR said. EMF Broadcasting will continue to carry the K-LOVE programming on its 91.1 FM frequency, where K-LOVE is now simulcast. KCFR features the national news broadcasts All Things Considered and Morning Edition, as well as talk, arts and feature programs such as Fresh Air, Talk of the Nation and This American Life. It also carries local news and the interview program Colorado Matters and world-news broadcasts from the British Broadcasting Corp. Until 2001, CPR broadcast both news and music on a single FM frequency. Then it split its programming into two stations, moving news to AM and keeping music on FM. And thankfully I have a QSL from them dated 1968. / My hometown PD (Rockford IL) had an AM band station starting in 1933 with the call WPGD. The station was gone by the time I became interested in radio. So I never heard them and I'm not sure what frequency they were on. But the end-fed long wire antenna for the station remained strung between police headquarters and city hall well into the late 70s. I read a history of LAPD communications that said they were on 1712 kc (later moved to 1730 kc) from 1931 to 1949 with the call KGPL. I have a QSL posted on my AM-DXer web site (see link below) from the New York City Fire Department from 1939 when they were on 1630 kc with the call WNYF. Although modern interoperability standards push plain language operations now, I have always been fascinated with the very early brevity codes that still creep into use on some public safety radio systems. For example, my hometown still uses signal 8 to refer to a meeting between two officers. NYPD still uses K to signify the end of a transmission. And the Miami area still uses QSL to acknowledge that a message was received. When I was a police dispatcher in IL in the 70s our department routinely used about 200 brevity codes that every officer and dispatcher was required to memorize. Now, over 30 years later, I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning. But I still have those dang radio codes burned into my long-term memory. [IRCA] Strange QSL
I just received a F/D QSL letter confirming my February 28, 2004 reception of KRZI / 1580 in Waco TX. I sent a cassette recording of my reception with the original report and I sent a followup report during the 4th quarter of 2004. Of course the KRZI calls are now on 1660 in Waco and 1580 no longer exists. What's even more strange is that the QSL letter was dated 2006 and outdated items mentioned in the letter seem to indicate that it was indeed written in 2006. The envelope it arrived in was postmarked 01/05/08. Strange! QSL report. 1580 KRZI TX Waco. F/D V/L in 3 years and 11 months for a report with a cassette recording and a followup letter in late 2004. [IRCA] Chicago area questions
1. Can anyone tell me if WCEV and WRLL (ex-WVON) are still a shared time situation on 1450? The FCC records indicate that they are. But I thought that had gone away. 2. Can someone remind me who the station is that was transmitting from the north suburbs with several very short top-loaded towers? The last time I visited there, probably a half dozen years ago, I believe they were ethnic - possibly Polish. 3. Who was the station that was transmitting from the roof an old factory building on the near west side? I think it may have been a split site operation. But I don't recall if this was the day or night site. Thanks in advance. Re: [IRCA] Chicago area questions
Thanks everyone for the response. Scott, you answered all of my questions. WNVR is the Polish station I couldn't remember. There was a discussion earlier about short AM antennas on Barry's technician reflector and I was trying to find my WNVR photos. But I couldn't remember the call letters or frequency. As I recall they were subject to a 100-foot height limit due to local restrictions. They ended up with a DA with four 36.6 degree (97-feet) towers with 9.4 degrees (25-feet) of top-loading using stiff horizontal top elements. I visited there while it was still a CP in September 2000 and had trouble finding the site even with a GPS. The towers were basically surrounded by taller trees. I'll post up some pics on one of my web sites shortly. I believe WNTD/950 was the rooftop site in question. I'm glad you got pictues of it. I didn't. But I did get a good tower hunting story. I found the site after a little searching. I'm still not exactly clear on what part of Chicago I was in. I knew better than to go on the south side alone. But I thought I was far enough west to be safe. While I was getting my camera equipment together for a walk to try and get a good angle for some pics a police cruiser drove by. He stopped about 1/2 block down and backed up to where I was. I had my camera equipment spread out on the hood of my car. It was a Sunday morning and I didn't see anyone else around the area. So I figured he thought I was suspicious. He didn't even get out of his car. He rolled down the window asked me if I had health insurance. I thought this was an odd question and I wondered why he didn't first ask what I was doing. I recall thinking that maybe he was selling health insurance on the side. I assured him that I had good health insurance. He then said that's good because with out-of-state plates and an expensive camera in this neighborhood you're probably going to need to use it in about 10 minutes. He was a bit of a smart ass. But he may have saved my life. I thanked him, threw the camera on the seat of my car, locked the door, and started looking for the fastest route back to the interstate. [IRCA] Christmas came early
I woke up a little early this morning and was rewarded with a good log on WVON/1690 in IL. This is a good catch because I have a local (KDDZ) on the same channel. My best loop heading for Chicago is almost at a right angle to KDDZ which was a big help. WVON was IDing as the Talk of Chicago. I'll bet WLS loves that! Speaking of WLS - I just saw the video of the attack on the WLS-TV studio yesterday. Someone apparently intentionally drove a car through the studio wall during a live news broadcast! I wonder if this will be considered as a terrorism incident on a Federally licensed broadcaster? Please keep all of the public safety folks and others that will be working on Christmas day in your hearts. Since our studios are staffed 24/7 I volunteered to work the master control shift from 11 AM to 7 PM on Christmas day and then back at midnight for another 6 hours on Wednesday morning. I'm sure the jocks have all voice tracked their shifts so I'll probably be alone. I just hope there is something good on the DirecTV in the studio to keep me awake! [IRCA] Daytime skywave on MW
I should have mentioned this earlier in the week. But I have been extremely busy. We were experiencing some heavy daytime skywave reflection in the beginning of the week on 1510. I'm not sure if this was just a local phenomena or not. What we were getting appeared to be very high angle reflection from our own station in the 15 to 25 km range both east and west of our transmitter. We verified this by briefly shutting our transmitter off and the skywave ceased. The reflection was so strong on Monday and Tuesday that we were unable to get reliable readings on the field strength meters. So we temporarily suspended that project for the rest of the week. I think I recall that someone east of here also mentioned an unusual daytime skywave reception in the early part of the week. The folks who do the TV show CSI seem to agree - their theme song Who Are You was/is a hit by The Who. // All three of the shows in the CSI franchise use a Who song for their opening themes. CSI: Miami uses Won't Get Fooled Again and CSI: New York uses Baba O'Riley. I also don't understand how someone can be indicted for looking at something bad on a web site that's in the public domain. You would think that the authorities would be more interested in prosecuting the people who created and maintain the web site with the questionable or illegal content. Re: [IRCA] OC on KWSX
Our progressive music FM in the Denver area (KCUV) has been playing the new Fogerty album for several weeks. Several cuts are very reminiscent of the old Fogerty. However, several cuts are very political and our PD restricted them from air play. /// Sure, you might even find Fogerty in some local pub still trying to make enough to get out of town. -- Actually, he's doing quite well for himself at the moment. [IRCA] Adventures in IBOC
Here's another example of just how bad IBOC is. I was staged at a monitoring point 11.5 miles NW of KCKK/1510 most of the day today while our consultant made adjustments to the 19 kw night DA pattern. I was at this particular location because it is on one of the nulls (328 degrees) that protects the 1510 station in Spokane WA. I was reading about 3 mV on the field intensity meter which should present a decent signal in the local area. While waiting I decided to check out the signal on my car radio. I was surprised to find the signal on 1510 completely covered by the IBOC hash from 1490 in Boulder. Boulder was 11 miles west of me so I was almost exactly between the two stations. Boulder is two channels away and runs only 1 kw ND. Yet it completely obliterated the 3 mV signal from 1510. I wish I could have shut off 1510 long enough to read the signal strength of the IBOC noise on that channel. Re: [IRCA] UnID TIS (Marin County CA)
Anybody out there have specific ID info on this?? // Your loop bearing is pretty accurate Art. The FCC database shows a TIS on 1610 licensed to the Ross Valley Fire Service in San Anselmo. The control point and business address is 777 San Anselmo Ave. The contact person is JoAnne Lewis at 415-258-4686. The license specifies that they shall transmit only non-commercial voice information but doesn't specifically prohibit music. There use to be a provision that prohibited music on a TIS but I can no longer find it in the rules. Many TIS stations broadcast some music content. The TIS at Denver International Airport, for example, routinely plays seasonal music during the holidays. They use the music as a bumper between information segments. [IRCA] KCKK on Non-Directional (ND) this afternoon
This probably won't be useful to anyone unless you are within a few hundred miles of Denver. KCKK/1510 will be operating in ND mode for most of the afternoon to allow for some ND field strength measurements. I'm not sure yet what the power will be. The STA authorizes 2380 watts day and 4750 watts night in ND mode. We have been doing night time DA proofs during the day the past few weeks and this is part of the night proofs. So I suspect it will be at the higher setting. Night DA proofs must be run during the day to avoid skywave interference in the proof results. We will return to normal power and pattern before sunset. [IRCA] KPOF-910 in the news
My local weekly newspaper, the Westminster Window, has a story this week about KPOF which will celebrate its 80th anniversary next March. They signed on the air March 9, 1928. The station's studios are located in the historic Pillar of Fire building which was built in 1892. At that time the building was the Westminster University which was then dubbed as the Princeton of the West. The article says that Pillar of Fire is the oldest network of Christian radio stations in the world and KPOF is the oldest station in the network. A large portion of the article centers around the station broadcasting in HD. KPOF has been HD since 2004 and was the first full-time HD station in the market. The article says that iBiquity identifies the Denver/Boulder market as the number one market in the country for HD with 58% of the stations broadcasting digitally. Re: [IRCA] KPOF-910 in the news
Can we read this article online anywhere? Paul / No. The Westminster Window is a small weekly newspaper serving several north Denver suburbs. They have a circulation of about 5,850. It is one of several publications of MetroNorth Newspapers which has a total circulation of about 60,000 in a population base that is well over 1,000,000. As you can see they are quite small. As far as I know they do not publish on line. I did a Google search and found that they do have a web page that tells how to contact them, how to subscribe, etc but carries no content. BTW I didn't mention it before but the reporter misidentified the call letters of the station as KOPF throughout the article.
