[IRCA] PROPAGATION
Absolutely true, Walt. Other than while under decimating power lines, on three of the last ten days while I was driving around Tacoma, KFBK-1530 Sacramento was good all day long at great levels. It was first noted at noon at the Tacoma Yacht Club and lasted all the way home in Northeast Tacoma. In other news, KLER-1300 Orofino, ID noted at an excellent level at 9:45p PST 1/14 with frequent mention of The Clearwater. It was a relog from 1998. According to one source, KKOL-1300 goes back on the air in March from its new transmitter site. [IRCA] GOODBYE DX-398?
My Radio Shack DX-398 has served me well over the years. It is an adequate receiver as is. It also has “line out” capability, can be set for 9 or 10 kHz tuning, has RDS, and works very well with a Gary DeBock FSL antenna. However, the right channel audio on headphones is gone and the FM band is inoperative. It is not a very good DX companion at this time so not being able to find anyone who can fix it, I am willing to give it away for the cost of shipping. If you would like it, let me know. Having said that, if you are interested in getting it, I would have to assume that you must have some capability or means of fixing it. If you do indeed have a way to get it working again, I would much prefer to have information on this resource, get it fixed at a reasonable cost, and continue using it. I will wait a month or so to determine if there are any “fixers” out there. If not, I will offer it, as is, again. Re: [IRCA] Cruise ship DXing
Walt, Thanks for your comments on cruise ship DXing. Of particular interest was your statement: "There’s not any good way of knowing position, or predicted route.” We go back and forth between Princess and HAL and in nearly all cases, there is a ship-produced TV channel which displays speed and coordinates. Only twice has this not been the case: (1) we left Ft. Lauderdale for Halifax but had to re-route because of a tough storm up there (not sure why they couldn’t reprogram it on board) and (2) on our December South Caribbean cruise, they were modifying the system. Shipboard Wifi is exorbitant and slow so we usually don’t bother with it. Instead, I use he Compass program on my iPhone to get coordinates whenever there is enough signal to do it (like, in or near ports where we use Wifi at Starbucks or McDonald’s). My DX tools include a DX-398, a Gary DeBock FSL and a little cassette recorder which has line in capability. We always get a balcony and always request a room on the side of the ship which faces land the most. Thus far, I have not been sufficiently venturesome to lug the equipment anywhere outside the room. Likewise, FM is of interest too but I am not sure I would bother with it if it weren’t for RDS. We’re going on a South American cruise next year sometime. It should be challenging keeping notes since EVERYTHING will be (1) new and (2) in Spanish. [IRCA] HAWAII DX, PART 2
As noted previously, my wife, a DX-398 and a Gary DeBock FSL went to Kailua-Kona, Kaanapali (Maui) and Lihue (Kauai) 3/29-4/16. Foreign DX was covered previously; this reflects reception of Mainland domestics. There was no DX from Kauai because of overwhelming QRN. All times HST. Strongest U.S. stations every night from both places: 580-KMJ, 1460-KION, 1110-KBND (usually //KPNW-1120 W/CTC), 1580-KBLA The post relates to reception of domestic stations. Unanticipated loggings: 630 - KIDD (strange variety of semiclassical music) 630 - CHED 4/3 9pm, Maui 640 - Unknown under KFI (probably KYUK) 660 - KTNN (chanting) and CFFR 790 - KABC 850 - KICY abrupt carrier cut mid-hymn 9pm 4/10 from Maui 850 - OC 8:55p, Maui (perhaps KICY w/early signoff or prep for pattern change) 860 - K-Talk, KPAM or KTRB (maybe it was K-Pam) 890 - KBBI 4/6 9pm, Maui 910 - SS, KKSF? 920 - SS? 960 - CFAC Jets Network, 4/10, 8p Maui 970 - KFBX Fairbanks w/wx, 4/3 9pm Maui 1140 - CHRB mixed with KHTK 1150 - KEIB LA 1170 - KLOK Asian, 4/11 8p, Maui 1320 - KIFM Sacto. ESPN 1380 - CTC, presumed KTKZ 1550 - Asian (either KZDG or KRPI) 1600 - KVRI (Asian) 1600 - UNID - ESPN Other expected regulars: 670-KBOI, 680-KNBR, 710-KIRO, 720-KDWN, 730-CHMJ, 750-KXTG, 770-KTTH, 780-KKOH, 820-KGNW, 840-KXNT, 930-CJCA, 950-KJR, 980-CKNW, 1010-CBR, 1050-KTCT, 1060-CKMX (under KIPA), 1070-KNX, 1090-sports, 1100-KFAX sometimes, 1120-KPNW, 1160-KSL, 1190-KEX, 1300-KAPL, 1410-CFTE, 1510-KGA w/Asian under (KSFN?), 1530-KFBK (w/someone under), 1560-KNWZ, 1590-KLIV, 1640-religion (probably KDIA). For the record, there are Hawaiians on 550 570 590 650 670 690 740 760 830 880 900 940 990 1040 1060 1080 1110 1210 1240 1270 1370 1420 1500 1540 1570. Both Kailua-Kona (Big Island) and Kaanapali (Maui) are on the West side of their islands. Also, our rooms in both places were facing South/Southwest which was desirable because I was seeking stations in those directions. This was not favorable for Mainland station receptions but that seemed not to be a problem. The dial was very porous the night of 4/11 on Maui. Also, there was something on just about every domestic frequency while driving around Poipu, Kauai the night of 4/15. It was fun. Thanks to Gary DeBock for his creation. For the record, TSA people at airports in Kona and Kahului were mystified and took 10-15 minutes to explore before letting the FSL through. Having the descriptive booklet helped. Aloha! [IRCA] HAWAII DX
My wife, a DX-398 and a marvelous Gary DeBock FSL ventured to Kailua-Kona (Big Island), Kaanapali (Maui) and Lihue (Kauai) 3/29-4/16. Foreign DX is listed below; domestics will come later. Time is HST since this is meant to reflect what you would more than likely hear if you were there and not what you would necessarily hear from the Mainland. Except as noted, all loggings are between 8:30-10:30pm local time. Please note there are no Kauai loggings; the time share we were in was hopelessly overwhelmed by QRN. This was disappointing because I was looking forward to comparing reception with what I heard in Poipu in 1984. 612 – 4QR Brisbane. Fair in both Kona and Maui. 621 – TUVALU. Reasonable strength in Kona and good on Maui 4/4 5am but only a het on Kauai. 666 – Japanese 4/4 5am, Maui (JOBK Osaka) 747 – JOIB Sapporo even with UNID 4/4 5am, Maui 774 – 3LO Melbourne & JOUB Akita mixing it up 4/4 5am, Maui 846 – KIRIBATI. I have no notes indicating I ever heard this station from anywhere 963 – Very loud 4/4 5am but I didn’t hang around long enough to ID it 972 – HLCA very loud 4/4 5am, Maui 1017 –TONGA. Good in Kona but mixed with an excitable 2KY on Maui. I think I heard JJ in there too (JOLB Fukuoka) 1044 – CHINA. Changzhou presumed with JJ programming. Very loud 4/4 5am Maui 1098 – V7AB MAJURO. Gangbusters in Kona but barely even a het on Maui (KFAX loud). 1350 – UNID Asian. Sounded Japanese but Hiroshima has only 20kw. 1440 – KIRIBATI. Very strong in Kona but not a peep from it in Maui. From Kona, ABC news 4/1 9pm followed by hymn-like chorale. At 9:37p, weather and tides by soft-spoken lady in English followed by ID. Very strong level. 1440 – JOWF Sapporo. Good level with kiddie program 4/11 5am. 1548 – 4QD Emerald fair 3/31 10p, Kona 1593 – Chinese fair 4/11 5am. Changzhou presumed. 4/4 5am, Maui. As for Hawaii, all stations were heard in all three locations. KWAI-1080 is the weakest of the 5kw stations. KIKI-990 has a bad hum. KNUI-550 is poorer in all locations than KMVI-900. In Kaanapali (NW corner of Maui), the mid-island stations (KNUI KCIK KMVI KAOI KEWE KUAU) don’t do a great job. Many Honolulu stations are louder. Domestics: coming up. [IRCA] IRCA CARIBBEAN REPORT, Part 2
890 - UNID 12/2 10am EST between the Cay and PR. Seemed to give calls, HI— (I missed the last two letters). Would appear to have been R. 8-90, La Consentida, Mao, DR 900 - CBC St. Michael, Barbados poor level 12/3 9am from St. Thomas. Signal level increased as we headed south but didn’t hold up that well as we headed west from Grenada. A per ads, CBC has a monopoly in the communications business. Reggae Christmas carols were fun! 920 - SS local-like in Grenada. Presumed YVOX Porlamar. 12/5 9am. 940 - WINZ Miami - best FL signal at Princess Cay. No Cuban under/over it. Interesting because WINZ has an STA for 25kw night because of Cuban interference. 1000 - Cuban bubble wobbler. Only here one night (11/30, 4 hours out of Ft. Lauderdale). It was also noted here last year. 1030 - Port-au-Prince, R. Ginen. Taped 12/2 10am (heading to PR) but no ID heard. 1060 - WIXC Titusville is back on relaying WWBA-820 and yes, they do give an ID a minute or two before the WWBA ID. Heard in Orlando, St. Thomas 9am 12/3, Martinique (very weak 12/4 11a) and also off of north central Cuba 11am 12/9. 1090 - Deportes, Caracas, one of the earlier YVs to boom in as we approached Grenada. Apparently YVSZ Caracas. 1130 - My hearing must be grim because just as I did while in Boston in Sept., I heard this as “Radio Cinco" 12/3 10:15pm from south of PR. 1150 - “CMX R. Guaymas” is what I heard 11/30 9pm 4 hrs. out of Ft. Laudedale but that doesn’t hold up in deference to WRTH’s R. Bayamo, Entronque Bueycito. 1160 - Caribbean Radio Lighthouse, St. John’s, Antigua & Barbuda fairly good in Grenada but not memorable from anywhere else. 1200 - It sounded like R. Pinto to me but more than likely was R. Tiempo, Caracas, 12/6, 9a, 40 miles E of Bonaire. 1240 - Radio Maria, Santo Domingo, DR. No “de la alta gracia” ever heard. Good level between PR & St. Thomas, 10pm EST 12/2 and 12/3 9am AST in St. Thomas. It was heard quite a ways as we headed south. It was also surprisingly strong as we left Grenada for Bonaire. The web site says (essentially) variety programming but all I ever heard was religious chanting and hymns. 1260 - WISO Ponce relaying WAPA 12/8 9am between Haiti/Cuba 1260 - SS w/Christmas music around 9a 12/6 nearing Bonaire. Presumably Caracas. Re: [IRCA] ZNS Nassau
During my Caribbean cruise (which I am writing up at a leisurely pace because of my scribbling), ZNS was not exactly overwhelming once you got out of the Bahamas. In addition, it throws out a lot of garbage at various places between 1500-1570kHz. Of particular note, it is responsible for a 1kHz tone around 1520 which on one evening clashed with the 1kHz het caused by the Saudi. I noted the same thing last year but at the time didn’t relate it to ZNS. Re: [IRCA] Kona dial tune 0630 U
We were in Kona last year. The noise was not intolerable. However, after taping as many island-station IDs as I could, I didn’t really go out of my way to stay up all night for further catches. Later on this year, my wife and I will be visiting three of the islands. Since I will be toting one of Gary DeBock’s marvelous FSL units, I hope to be more ambitious. KTNQ was my loudest NA station. In response to one of Gary’s questions, we rented a car and visited a ranch up north of the Big Island somewhere between Waimea and Hawi. On the way back to Kona for the first half hour or so, the band was overloaded with West Coast US stations. I am sure the Hilo dial would be the same. [IRCA] MYSTERIES
I recently submitted two rather lengthy reports of my receptions during the cruise we were on. Here are four that I left out (times are local): 1485 - 8/21 3pm in Rotterdam. I don’t speak Dutch and can’t ferret out an ID but my guess is Hollands Palet in The Hague. It is 1 watt as per WRTH. 1431 - 8/21 9pm in Rotterdam. I can’t tell the language - it could even be heavily-accented English - but there is a definite “Phoenix Radio” ID. Ukraine is the most likely but the ID doesn’t fit. 1386 - 8/24 8pm from Liverpool. This is Radio Clatterbridge, a low power hospital station (“LPAM”). Very professional sounding, and if you Google it, you can see the station has nice facilities. You would think it would move to FM to avoid hospital electronic noise. 1485 - 8/22 2pm from off the SW corner of England (4951n 0517w) in Spanish. There were several SER outlets on 1485 but the one that makes the most sense is Santander, 10kw, on the North coast of Spain, the only one with a water path. [IRCA] EUROTRIP 2017 - PART 1
My wife, my DX-398, one of Gary DeBock’s FSL antennas and I all hopped on the MS Rotterdam out of Boston on August 2 for a 38 day excursion. Ports visited were Bar Harbor ME, Sydney NS, Corner Brook & Red Bay NL, Qaqortoq Greenland, Reykjavik Iceland, Aalesund, Bergen & Eidfjord Norway, Rotterdam Netherlands, Dublin Ireland, Liverpool England, Isle of Man, Isle of Skye, Djupivogur, Akureyri & Isafjord Iceland, Nanortalik Greenland, St. Anthony & St. John’s NL and Halifax NS and then back to Boston, where we stayed in Woburn. Considerations: (1) our cabin was on the port side so that was helpful for about half the trip; (2) most DXing was done daytime up to 10:30LT at night. When you are losing an hour frequently, when your wife gets sick and when you are tired from a lot of tours, you are not prone to get up at 4 to DX - the point being, when we were east of Greenland, I wasn’t up to catch U.S. TAs. Also, some nights it was just too cold, windy and wet to DX outside; (3) the FSL is a marvelous piece of equipment. However, it is indeed directional, and since I was surrounded by metal on three sides, I couldn’t always use it to best advantage. What I needed to do was sit on the stern with a Lazy Susan; and (4) there is not a lot of exciting DX in here. That’s because anyone at the same location would receive the same stations I did; there were no skips and no distance records were set. I have purposely omitted the non-real DX regularly heard megastations, Spaniards, BBC, Talksport and Absolute biggies because they are obvious. However, it was fun, and that’s what hobbies are all about. Loggings are split because of size. This is Part 1: IN NORTH AMERICA (EDT) 549 - AA teletalk, leaving St. John’s NL, 570 - Nuuk only fair 7p 8/8 as we entered Qaqortoq, Greenland 590 - VOCM St. John’s. VOCM heard promoting its return to a heavy new coverage around the province. Its newscasts were heard at one time or another on 570 590 620 650 710 740 870 (1010 (probably an image) 1230 1240. These are not reported separately below but were all heard. 600 - CBNA St. Anthony NL. I thought this was a low power CBC repeater in Red Bay because it faded out fairly quickly when we headed north. I then looked at a map… 720 - Simiutaq, Greenland semilocal in Nanotalik 9/2 8a, //95.0. (NOTE: 650 never heard) 729/738 - RNE R. Nacional, //, 7p 8/8 approaching Qaqortoq (RNE) 900 - AA 9/5 7:05p leaving St. John’s NL 980 - WCAP (oldies) w/very strong het (Algiers presuming) nearly NF, 8p 9/5 981 - AA teletalk, entering Qaqortoq 9:40p 8/8 (Algiers presumed) 1089 - TalkSport on top of WBAL 8/8 9p approaching Qaqortoq 1100 - WHLI Hempstead even w/WTAM 9/12 8:25p from Woburn. On a little late? 1110 - SS even with WBT in Red Bay NL, 10p 8/6. Presumed Venezuela 1110 - SS, what sounded like R. Cinco, 6:50p 9/5, leaving St. John’s NL 1160 - WVNJ Oakland NJ (local talk) and UNID NH station (c) even many nights in Woburn 9/9-12. 1200 - WXKS Newton MA (Bloomberg) // WRCA-1330 Watertown. Nothing like a little signal overlap (noted in Woburn 9/12) 1210 - VOAR Mt. Pearl, NL still here but not for long from what I understand. This was heard last year on another cruise about 150 miles south of Bermuda. 1220 - UNID, “The Legend,” 6 hrs out of Boston 9/8 1015. 1341 - BBC Ulster wiping out 1340s, 8pm 8/5 off of Sydney NS and 9p 9/5 leaving St. John’s (Part 2 follows…) Pete Taylor Tacoma, WA 12225w 4719n HQ180 & ICF2010 Gary DeBock FSL antenna Kiwa aircore & Palomar loops DX398, SRF-59 & M37V Eton E100 + Tecsun PL-300/380 ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] DX398 REPAIR
My DX398 is having a few problems: (1) No audio out of the speaker (2) Right channel only on earphones (with occasional short bursts of audio on the left, amidst crackling) (3) “RDS” appears all the time while the radio is off (4) RDS info is extremely slow coming, even on strong signals. I have written Rod Walberg with no response. I also recall that a Mr. Ramos did repairs but the latest correspondence indicates no responses from him either. I there anyone else out there in DXland who still repairs these? If so, contact info would be appreciated. Thanks. [IRCA] FARSI
Anyone out there in DX-Land who is fluent in Farsi? If so, I would like to send you a CD or thumb drive of a station I taped on 580kHz in 1979 in Africa. It’s hard to believe but the 38 year old cassette is just fine. If you are amenable, I will need a snail-mail address. Thanks. [IRCA] CHINESE QSLs
Chris Kadlec wrote: > Everyone has to start somewhere. You just persist and find ways to gain > knowledge, improve your hobby for yourself and others, and one day it's all > effortless. Before we visited China in 1979, I did quite a bit of research utilizing many available sources including FBIS, the WRH (no WRTVH back then) and DX reports. It was challenging because everything available was in anglicized Pinyin. Fortunately, I came across a province-by-province atlas with everything in anglicized Mandarin. The result was a freq-by-freq bandscan of what I “might” hear. I taped extensively and got to the point where I very often could identify where a “bo dian tai” was from. To fill in the gaps, I befriended a lovely SF Safeway checker who was from Taiwan but was fluent in Mandarin. She not only identified the ones I couldn’t, she translated my English language reports into Mandarin. I sent these with cassettes and got a lot of Chinese veries I otherwise would not have gotten. So Chris, you are absolutely right. Thanks for providing us with all the Asian DX information! Re: [IRCA] philosophy of logging a new one
Other than in my own mind, I do not put “heards” or “think-I-heards” in my log. For instance, I know I had Norway on 1314 a couple of years ago. My wife is of Norwegian extraction. There wasn't enough audio for her to opine so I sent it to the parents of one of our Rotary exchange students in Norway. She was an NRK field reporter but couldn’t confirm what it was. If she had been a DXer with a trained ear, I’m sure she could have identified it. However, I don’t count it and that’s the way it goes. While at Duke eons ago, I know I heard audio from 2WL-1430 in Wollongong. I taped it and sent it to the station and never heard back. I didn’t have dubbing capability so what I sent was the only copy. I had the same thing happen when I lived in San Francisco when I heard Dakar on (then) 764. On the other hand, when I heard Spanish on 1620 a few years back before the X-band got loaded, I didn’t have a clue so sent a copy to a Mexican DXer who identified it as Buenos Aires and pointed out an identification phrase. I count that one. I live in a hotbed of avid TP DXers who with their superior equipment and trained ears regularly hear everything I might at best even get a squeak out of so when I hear a het, sure, I’m confident I know what it is but don’t count it unless I get some sort of a ID. However, I think it is helpful when a DXer reports “hets on 594 765 828 1566” because that reflects reception conditions. From there, it’s up to us to dig in and identify what they are. Re: [IRCA] Anybody want to go to Cuba?
Nice and intriguing idea, Scott. I grew up in Miami, pre-Castro, but never got to Cuba (or even the Bahamas, for that matter). It would be interesting to find out if the U.S. approach to Cuban normalization procedures calls for power reduction on some of the frequencies which are currently under considerable duress thanks to the excessive power levels in use on the island. Just askin’. Re: [IRCA] Current NW rain and wind
Pretty blustery here in Tacoma this afternoon but it has calmed down considerably. A semi got blown over on he Narrows Bridge. My wife drove over to Bellevue but came back rather quickly lest the bridge closed before she returned. A few blinks earlier but no power outages for us. Apparently there are about 45,000 peeps up north who weren’t so lucky. If our power goes out, I hop on 1350-1370 since if ours goes out, KKMO’s does too. It is about a mile away. Re: [IRCA] October 17, 1989 audio from KGO San Francisco
Colin, Thanks for including this in your post. We were there when it happened, looking down on the fire in the Marina but not really grasping what was happening to the homes situated on the gelatinous surface. With no AC, we watched what was going on using our 8” battery operated b TV set. I do have a question, though. KGO lost a tower and ran using about 7 or 8kw for four months or so. Obviously it was being picked up by some listener in the Bay Area and relayed on the ham band. However, I do not think they would have been able to continue transmitting without some down time for rewiring, and surely, some announcement relating to the reduced coverage would have to have been made. [IRCA] DX 11/17
Our power was off from about 4-8:30p PST on Tuesday. Also off were (1) KKMO-1360 (1 mile away) and (2) a whole lot of electrical noise. Of note (PST): 1230 KCUP Toledo, OR w/ID at 8p. I believe they hyphenated during the ID with “Toledo-Newport” and that they went in to Fox News. New. 1250 K… Seattle. Now with Indian (Punjabi?) music but most of the ads and announcements are in English. Don’t know if they have changed calls yet. Of note only because it sounded like they were on night pattern around 6:30p but at 7 they were definitely on day pattern. This is one of those quirky grandfathered-in arrangements where they are supposed to go on night pattern at sunset but can go back to 5kw non-DA at 9pm local. I guess the presumption is that KWSU has no Western Washington listeners after 9pm. 1510 KSFN Piedmont CA around 7:30p presumed but it didn’t sound like Mandarin. Perhaps a dialect. Not a lot of juice in this direction. No sign of KGA. Nothing stood out on the usually blocked 1350-1370. Maybe next time! [IRCA] HAWAIIAN REPORT
My wife, DX-398 and I spent the last two weeks in Kailua - Kona on the west coast of the Big Island. All Hawaiian AM stations were audible. Comments: 1. KRTR-650 was off the air from our arrival 10/26 through 11/5. It was noted back on with Filipino programming on 11/6. 2. KEWE-1240 was the weakest of all Hawaiian stations 10/26-11/5. On 11/6 it was noted at good level, comparable to other Maui stations. I believe I read in someone’s earlier post that they were temporarily operating at reduced power. My guess is that they got the 5kw rig operational. Format is Christian Contemporary. IDs are frequent. 3. KHBC-1060 Hilo is off the air. Confirmed during our visit to Hilo. 4. KKON-790 was the only local. It carries ESPN and usually has a hum on its signal. 5. KHNR-690 is the strongest signal out of Honolulu. Format is talk. Promotes itself as “The Answer.” 6. KPHI-1130 was one with which I had no familiarity. Filipino programming with frequent mention of its 96.7 repeater. Not a very potent signal. I do not see it cutting through CKWX and KRDU with any regularity. As soon as I find my notes, I will report on what I heard outside of the Islands. [IRCA] THE OTHER HAWAIIAN REPORT
The previous report covered Hawaiian stations; this one covers what else I heard. First, Colin, we stayed at Waikoloa Village 10/26-31 and Kona Coast Resort 11/1-6. North American reception is pretty well blocked by the rather large mountains; electrical noise at both places didn’t help much either. Bob Coomler, yes, you’ll be in great shape for North America but not so good for Asia. (Be sure to go to the Botanical Garden!) I DXed a couple of times at 10pm and 4am local but was not rewarded with much other than a few hets. However, there were a few things of interest Sat. 11/7 at 4am HST: 603 - couldn’t tell language. Seems unlikely it was Korean but could be. Actually heard two mornings. 620/621 - sounded like opera with JJ commentary. Not positive about the language. 747 - Japanese; fair level 774 - as above 1143 - as above 1170 - someone trying to break through but not quite audio 1380 - US sports. KTKZ? 1410 - US sports. KMYC unlikely, but what else? 1440 - good level in Japanese 1550 - repetitive chanting. Really strange. KZDG? On 11/5, we drove up to a ranch on Hwy. 250 about 2/3rds of the way up from Waimea. This did not give me a clear shot to the U.S. mainland but it wasn’t bad. Driving back 2 hours after local sunset, I listened for about 15 minutes before the mountains started blocking reception. The dial was alive from 540-1150 with U.S. stations audible on just about every frequency which did not have a Hawaiian station on it. KTNQ-1020 was the loudest. In the 80s, we went to Poipu on Kauai. No problem with having a loop in your luggage back then. Reception was wonderful with Argentina all the way around to Japan bouncing in. Fun! I brought along my old Sony ICF-6700W (a BIG radio), a loop antenna and a cassette recorder. During our honeymoon, I heard the election returns on KNX (first time around for Jerry Brown). Also, it was the same weekend of the 10 to 9khz worldwide frequency separation change. She was and still is very tolerant of my DX proclivity. It’s part of the package. [IRCA] OUT OF THE PAST AND CFA
Some of you know that in my working days I was involved with WJIB-96.9, WXHR/WCAS-740 (along with John Callarman) and of course KFOG. The two FMs were represented in NYC by QMI (Quality Media Inc.) for purposes of procuring national advertising. The principals were Bob Richer (the selling) and Jim Schulke (the music). The company represented many “good music/easy listening” stations, but the music on them was inconsistent, so QMI produced music tapes which the stations were contractually bound to use. QMI dissolved but Schulke went on to form SRP (Stereo Radio Productions). So two days ago, I got a call from Bob Richer who I was sure had retired. Nope. He is (1) serving as a broker for European radio stations and (2) doing some work on cross field antennas. He dropped his teeth when I said I knew what a CFA was and that one was in use in Egypt on 864kHz. He went on to say that there are now ten of them in use in Egypt. I am not totally sure what his role in this is but I do know he is seeking some financing. He said the FCC is interested. I am sure there are others on this list who are closer to this than I am and can update the information. I was on a cruise ship about 40-50 miles south of Bermuda in mid-April and noted all three Bermudans on (1160 1280 1450) at approximately the same signal strength. 1450 had the best (loudest?) audio processing. [IRCA] THREE NAIVE QUESTIONS
Not exactly hyper-skilled in the technical arena, I am considering buying a Perseus and have three questions: (1) Above and beyond its ability to record wide expanses of the spectrum, is it an above-average receiver? (2) I have a couple of indoor loops which obviously you tune for max signal strength frequency by frequency. What are the Perseus antenna needs so the whole band is at max? (3) Are there others besides Perseus which I should be looking at for simplicity or other reasons? Thanks. [IRCA] KSJB
Just for kicks, I wrote the GM of KSJB (Rick Pfeiffer) regarding the station’s recent return to the air with full power. His response: Yes sir the old array was 68 years old and was subjected to a lot of abuse in our high wind state and swampy environment. The old setup was still using open-air feed line. I had a structural analysis done some years back and it was not good. There was also some evidence the Wincharger towers were poorly fabricated to begin with; and prior owners over the decades had overstressed them and done everything cheap instead of good. We rebuilt the whole thing; towers-ground radials-coax. Went with LED lights and a white day/red night light system that eliminates tower painting. We do stream on the net and have a mobile app. Patrick R. Thanks Bruce Portzer for the tip that KKMO-1360 (1 mile away) was off on Sunday. However, due to some family stuff, I didn’t read it until today. Around 1pm PDT it was still off; at 4 it was on with splotchy, unlistenable audio. It went off again, providing me with a good signal from KUIK from about 4:30, after which time I positioned the loop perpendicular to the KRKO IBOC slop on 1370 in hopes of snagging KWNC Quincy. Spanish music was coming in readably at 4:57 so I started the tape. The level held and it looked good for a nice ID at 5. Not to be. At precisely 4:59:30, KKMO came back on with the same splotchy audio I heard at 4. Along with Sydney, we went to Melbourne, Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Port Douglas (about 35 minutes north of Cairns). I would LOVE to report oodles of strange and exotic catches but the hotels were noisy and the tours were long, and more often than not, we were dragging. The only thing I can report (other than the obvious domestics) was an apparent Indonesian on 810. This was heard in both Uluru and Port Douglas so one of those listed in PAL has a bit of oomph. I did not hear an actual ID, but there was something I heard one night at about :58 which consisted of a dog barking and Indonesian-type gongs. This went on for two minutes. Other than that, we had a sensational time in Sydney (Vivid was taking place); saw the evening arrival of the penguins; rode camels in the shadow of Ayers Rock and went snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. The peeps were friendly, we had amazing weather (5/24-6/17) and I would go back in a flash. One other DX item. Wikipedia does have a list of Aussie stations but it is outdated. Also, any readers out there who can provide me with the source of a reasonably accurate list of Aussie FM stations? Thanks. Recently spent a few days in Ucluelet and Tofino, BC but did not put much time in on the dials. Of note: 540 CBXQ Ucluelet. Does OK around town but not a whole lot there at the first Ucluelet sign as you head west on Highway 4 toward the town. I asked several people if they knew where the CBC tower was. No one did and I wasn't able to find it. 840 KSWB Seaside, OR. Amazing mid-day signal driving around Tofino. Obviously stronger the closer I got to the beach. I thought there must be a new LPRT in the area but the mention of Seaside and 840 Gold cinched it. [IRCA] ALASKA TRIP
My wife and I just got back from a week-long cruise from Seattle to Juneau/Sitka/Ketchikan and back. I must confess that I really did not hang around a lot on the aft deck DXing, primarily because we had quite a bit of rain. Of note: (1) In Juneau, there was a KINY-800 image on 710 (atop KIRO) and in Sitka, there was a KIFW-1230 image on 1320. If KJNO were on 620, it might explain a 710 image. I mention these because both images are 900 off of the primary frequencied station. Is there something about the Tecsun 380 which I should know? (2) In all three locations, during the daytime, also on the 380, there seemed to be two carriers fighting it out on 750. No audio discerned, and the sound was wiped out at night by Portland. I don't see any CBC LPRTs on 750. A similar sound was noted once on 1250. The sound is not heard here at home. Again, I have to wonder if this is something which is internally generated. Walt, do you hear anything like this on the island? (3) Other than that, on 12/9, I heard classical music on 1150 en route Juneau at about 9:45pm PDT which doesn't match anything unless KKNW is even more diverse than usual on Sunday nights. So not exactly a DX extravaganza - but some of the glaciers were spectacular! [IRCA] ANCHORAGE DX
Just came back from five days in Anchorage (three days of meetings and two days of play, including snowmobiling, dog sledding, visiting a musk ox farm and watching the ceremonial start of the Iditarod and the annual reindeer run). Too much! I would like to say DX was phenomenal but that was not the case. I had the Tecsun 300 up against the hotel room window and could hear 550 590 650 700 750 920 1020 1080 1110 1140 - and one other on 1430. This would appear to be KWAP Wasilla which was licensed on 1/24/12. The signal was only audible at night. On 3/3 at 9pm local time, it was noted with GCN Radio Network programming and a mention of Alex Jones but there was no ID. The GCN web site does not provide an affiliate list. Perhaps KWAP is testing. While tracking this through the FCC database, I noted a CP for 50/10kw on 1540 in Anchorage. It is not on. While off topic, I noted a smooth jazz station in Anchorage on 87.7 which ID'ed as KNRK. Anchorage has had 121 of snow this season, 8 short of tying the all-time record. Mt.
