[IRCA] TA's
I think they faded early tonight, yea? I am using Ham Radio deluxe with my ICOM 703 (which is a pretty sweet receiver on all bands...) Is a cinch to remote it anywhere - all you need is the broadband -- I think it is also possible to connect it over a phone line - but that is majorly old school and somewhat slow - especially for the audio feed... What's your primary wire down there in Fairfield? A Wellbrook? You should set one of your vehicles up for wheeling down to Clover Point - I was down there on the weekend doing some Ham radio and it was pretty darn quiet. There is a plan afoot to put a remote on the roof of the Royal - just need to check the noise levels there -- would be a good test bed for remote radio. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Interesting QRN(M) that flattens medium-wave dial
This signal use to blot out the entire MW and parts of the SW dial for 4 city blocks - Has now settled down to around 1 city block - Our local power utility has been scoping it out for over 2 years - Our federal agency is Industry Canada and their policy is Go figure it out, we are busy here... THAT may get the problem solved perhaps before the weekend Good tip -- the QRN covers everything -- 40 feet away from the cable outlet it is not even possible to listen to AM stations that I used to enjoy at bed time -- like KGO - 810 - which is normally HUGE here. Of course it is one big thing in an orchestra of noise that has been building over the years. I have a small 2-meter Chinese made handheld that has a little switching-power supply wall-wart that generates a ton of similar interference. My iPhone display creates a small wall of noise that is audible on AM radios 10 feet away - and there are millions of these in use. [IRCA] Surplus Russian Ferrite TP's/DU's/DA's/TA's for 10-9
As much as I would like to chide Gary with reports of widespread multi-continental receptions on all bands and all frequencies, it was more of a case of squeezing a dehydrated lemon into an empty martini glass. No one showed up for the party... or any party for that matter. If there could have been less than zero, today was it. I jumped out of bed at 13:55 and sprinted directly to the SRFLA-50 and its newly mated Sony 2010... only to hear... domestics. When it became abundantly clear that there would be no trans-oceanic reception, I snooped around 900 and 940 looking for Hawaii - I have encountered Korean programming on 900 while at Jordan River and maybe some this morning - but pretty sure it was not Hawaii. Within 5 minutes it was confirmed - the only whines, whistles or squeals were between my middle-aged ears. Funny that in 4 days of abandoning amateur radio in favor of 100% medium-wave listening, I have been rewarded with nothing but punishment. Another day tomorrow. Colin lives in Victoria... in the shadow of DXers like Walter and Nick... using radios like the Sony 2010 and antennas built by people like Gary Debock...
[IRCA] Sat-Sun-Monday - TP Oct 8, 2012 / Jordan River Pacific version
Spent Friday night through Monday morning at the Point No Point cabins near Jordan River, B.C facing out over the pacific -- http://www.pointnopointresort.com/ Was testing out Gary Debock's innovative surplus ferrite rod antenna design -- its performance comparable to a 4' open frame loop. As it turns out, for me, this could have well been the single worse series of days for radio listening. MONDAY: Up at 1340 UTC and stuck with it til the stroke of 1400 UTC. Some strong carriers in some odd places - and no audio of note anywhere -- complete absence of any Pacific Asian audio. Having just read Nick's report, I should have hung out for sun rise and harvested at least a shred of radio dignity - This was DAY THREE of the new Russian Surplus Gary Debock antenna shake down (AKA, the Flux capacitor, AKA R2D2 [my wife's favorite antenna nickname so far] -- AKA the Russian Gatling Gun and now my official model number: SRFLA-50 {Surplus Russian Ferrite Loop Antenna - model 50 50 cores after all...} On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is an awe inspiring morning with the dial choked with so many signals as to leave the listener overwhelmed and 1 is the result of a lightning strike to the front end, or dead batteries or an ionosphere that is utterly missing in action -- I would rate this morning as 2 -- and that is being generous. SUNDAY: Conditions could not have been that bad but they were much worse than Saturday morning - 529 Alaska weather station was almost full deflection on the Sony 2010! Promising. As I moved up the dial it was revealed that there would be lots of carriers with little snippets of audio here and there. Loud carriers on 558, 639, 702, 729, 738, 783, 792, 801, 891, 1008, 1098 teased me incessantly but never revealed more than an illusion of audio. If memory serves me, audio may have appeared briefly on 774, 828 and 972. I stuck with it from 1330 to 1410. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would have given it a generous rating of 3. SATURDAY: I arose with high hopes at 12:55 UTC -- and it was clearly obvious this was too early for anything - again, lots of hets on the lower band (531 - 1000) and no audio anywhere - as an indicator of potential, the Alaska weather station was well placed on 529khz. Things picked up over 15 minutes or so and some top tier Japanese stations poked their noses through on 774 and 828. Korea on 972 was at fair levels at times - and the best signal on the band was 1566 Korea. There were hets on almost every low band channel from 531 up but nothing jumped out of the radio. I kept at it until the sun came up over the West and it became clear that this particular morning was low mediocre. Funny thing, I got up early on Friday to give the SRFL-50 a quick run and I was flabbergasted by the sheer strength of the one channel I dropped in on; 774 Japan. Overall, I would rate Saturday morning as a 3.5 - hardly worth the effort. I am currently thinking about advance shipping the SRFl-50 to Hawaii - but that will depend on it showing off its true powers between now and January. I actually have my fingers crossed that everyone else did as poorly -- making my experience less miserable. As a side note - this was the first weekend away in a long time that I packed nothing but 1 large radio (the 2010) and two small radios; the Eton E100 barefoot (great performer) and the G3 Traveler + 1 antenna, the SRFA-50 (apologies to Gary for giving his antenna a product number!) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] Victoria TP for 23 Sept 2012: in the darkness
As planned, power was cut to around 200 homes or more in my neighborhood between 4 and 7 AM -- very handy indeed. I powered my Drake R8, Wellbrook antennas and Icom 703+ on independent 12V motorcycle batteries - actually I think they are 4 amp/hour UPS batteries but close enough. As predicted, the silence and lack of ambient RF noise and hash on all frequencies was stunning - reminiscent of my days in the mid-seventies on 3.5 acres when the only noise was the occasional buzz from a local 13KV/220V step down transformer hundreds of yards away. Anyway - the reason that our power was cut was that there was a 12 bedroom house being moved - and in order to get the house and wheels on the road, power lines had to be interrupted. Initial predictions indicated a 2 hour cut in power... from 2 AM to 4 AM. Thank heavens for delays. What did not appear, however, were stellar conditions - I was at the dials at 11:35 UTC and apart from domestics and some hets on the 9khz plan there was little to pick from. By 12:05 UTC I decided to snooze on the sofa for a half-hour or so -- and I awoke again at 13:20 to... 567 - likely Japanese, 594 - Japanese, 603 - threshold audio, 621 - solid het, 747 Japan (best signal when I looked), 774 Japan, 792 - threshold audio, 828 - Japan, 891 - big het, nothing else really standing out til 972 and even Korea on that frequency was nothing special... and then little but hets all the way up to the top of the dial. My prime tuning was between 1320 and 1335 -- which may have been a tad early for the enhancement... Was looking for some of Walt's Hawaiian stations but I should have had notes because I was totally on the wrong frequency! Postscript: Last night after dark, drove out to the suburbs and checked out a park area behind a property (and house) that my wife and I are looking at.. and yes, it was whisper quiet too. = Colin Newell is a radio guy from way back who lives and works in Victoria and uses radios by Drake, Eton, Icom, Kenwoon, Sony and Tecsun... === ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] TP August 29 and 30 2012 / Jordan River Point no Point vs Victoria proper
Point no Point has served me well on many occasion - I think it may have had more to do with a lack of commitment - and not deploying the ALA100M properly. Heading back up there for 3 days in a month or so and heading to the Big Island of Hawaii for 24 days in January. I have been fine tuning things at home and monitoring the noise levels in my building -- have found a few window area sweet spots where the buzz is around S1 to S2 which should easily allow the TA and TP cavalcade to make its way through over the next month or so. Also going to try re-building my ALA100 loops using significantly heavier insulated wire and shorter lengths - currently my ALA100 and ALA100M loop lengths are around 15M long - which is about twice what they should be. Colin, I happened to be up from 12:30 UTC and listened for an hour. Things in Victoria were quite lively using my Perseus SDR and West directed corner fed loop. Very useful was Nick Hall-Patch's DX Fishbarrel which showed that conditions were very similar to my own. DU propagation was superior here, with 891 especially providing very good reception, especially around 13:15 UTC. 1116 was rather disappointing with threshold audio only. Earlier, Asiatic propagation was also decent with good to very good signals from Japan on 1287, and HLAZ 1566 being only slightly weaker. No idea why things were so poor for you. Perhaps Point No Point isn't such a great place to DX? Your ALA 100 should have done a lot better. Mine was only slightly less effective than the corner fed loop.Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] more on DXing a little bit inland
I did some experiments with this theory (with Nick as well) in 1994 and 1995 during one particularly good season where TA's were audible at my location 1.35 km from the waterfront in Victoria B.C. (on Cook Street) sometimes early in the afternoon. Cook Street, in Victoria B.C., terminated on Dallas Road -- and although not a true coastal location, it did exhibit unusual characteristics during the occasional walk down to the waterfront. The problem with this method of observation was, as I changed location, signal levels definitely ebbed and flowed but without simultaneous and synchronous signal readings being taken from fixed points along the route, the observations were merely anecdotal and curious. I noticed a similar pattern as I drove inland, one season, to a mini beverage site daily over a couple of weeks - that signals seemed to rise and fall, across the entire band with some predictability. Here in 2012 it is good to see the group pursue this theory and supposition with a bit more technology and ability to extract some more scientific metrics. Colin Newell - Victoria B.C. Used a TASCAM US-100 USB interface. From the Alinco DX-R8T I/Q output - 3.5mm stereo male to male dual RCA into the USB interface and from a USB cable to my Toshiba Netbook NB555D Windows 7 recognized the device immediately. Bingo - perfect demodulated audio from the Alinco I/Q output into the laptop. Thanks to everyone who submitted suggestions and encouragement. Full report on this interesting radio coming up. Re: [IRCA] Testing the Alinco DX-R8 Receiver
Getting lots of e-mail: Test the I/Q, test the I/Q! So far, have tried two different pieces of software and a cable that I made myself... and I see lots of neat spectrum on the display but the audio is rubbish - pops, bops and squeaks... Very likely something that I am doing or not doing. Apart from the I/Q output side of the house, the Alinco DX-R8T is a surprisingly friendly table stop communications receiver at a particularly trying period in radio listening history.
Re: [IRCA] Testing the Alinco DX-R8 Receiver
Hi Guy, I don't have an DX-R8 receiver therefore I cannot comment on how the I/Q output was implemented. OK - here is the challenge: I have the DX-R8T receiver. And yup, it has I/Q o/p on the back... and I have tried it with one piece of SDR software (KG-SDR) and the result was a very distorted and unusable audio on 15 Mhz WWV. Granted I am using the Toshiba ND555 notebook that has a microphone audio i/p and for all I know, I am distorting or overdriving the input. I am admitting that I am pretty much in the dark about I/Q outputs and suitable software and I am not ashamed to admit it. I have built SDR radios likes the soft-rock transceiver quite successfully. So - if anyone considers themselves knowledgeable about SDR and I/Q outputs, please e-mail be explicit instructions... like: Download this particular software and set your receiver or PC accordingly. Not being the lazy type, I am wading through a variety of google searches trying to learn while I have the radio... [IRCA] Testing the Alinco DX-R8 Receiver
http://youtu.be/w7dvwl1wjXU A sample from Durham radio - The name alone makes me think that Alinco is a tad on the bold side... I mean, who in their right mind would dare to take R8 and slap it on a radio unless they knew they could deal with the scrutiny. Will be checking its potential as a fancy medium wave receiver. Has decent bandwidth, pass band tuning and RF gain control... so who knows. Stay tuned.
Re: [IRCA] Testing the Alinco DX-R8 Receiver
It does have about 10db attenuation in the MW band. However, the 10db preamp also works there. I found it to be pretty decent on MW in SSB. The sole AM bandwidth is around 9kHz, and lacking in rejection and slopes. The front end was decent as well. Chris VE6IY Actually -- the DX-R8T that I have has a narrow filter in the AM position so it appears that there is some evolution underway. To be honest, I think, out of the gate, I wanted not to like the Alinco radio -- but after 2 days it is growing on me. Is kind of a poignant moment in time with DX listening (particularly on SW) will all the cut backs and the endless migration from SW to the internet. That said, there is lots going on. Re: [IRCA] Solar Storm
Expected arrival time is 0625 UTC -- less than 6 hours from now. Last night was interesting -- fair amount of scatter on 6 meters (50Mhz) but with my 10W and vertical antenna - no hope for QSO Could get really interesting on the medium wave dial. Strap yourself in folks. If radio reception tonight happens to sound like it did today(No Skip), then that might be due to another solar storm that will arrive in less than 24 hours. I can\t check this out after LSS so if someone out there notices any abnormal conditions then let us in on it and I can check my inbox after 11 PM and scan the band then to see what's happenng. I suspect this has something to do with the large geomagnetic storm/solar flare which likely wiped out anything to the north, and enhanced trans-Equatorial paths...Walt By 0900 UTC last night, 1st and 2nd tier JJ stations were in and there were lots of hints and audio from many of the high powered Chinese and Korean stations that are usually in full sync lock an hour earlier. OK - standing in the pitch black with the YL staring down into a glowing crater might not be DXing - but it is right up there with sheer excitement of the radio hobby. [IRCA] Kona TP's for Saturday 01/14/12
OK. So I slept in and have nothing to report. I did stay up later and I did unplug the Plasma TV that we were not using in the CONDO. Did you know these things generate RF even when they are OFF? Yea, I guess I knew that. I improved my noise signature some - by a few db. In a building with probably 35 1-bedroom units, I imagine almost all of them have at least 2 LCD or plasma TVs - combine that will all the smart lamps, wi-fi (which I imagine does not really interfere with SW) -- and a 14kv span around 70 feet away... can make for quite the buzz. Anyway - pretty sure I was hearing some signals from North America last night. What I need to do (advice to all of you...) is to spend less time sipping Mai Tai while the sun sets and more time glued to the radio... [IRCA] Kiribati - 1440
Still thought it was Saipan til I looked on the GOOGLE Maps... [IRCA] Kona TP for 12 Jan 2012 Not so much
Bit of noise this AM -- around 1500 UTC - and apart from the regular Island sounds on 540, 738, 1017 and 1098 - not much to speak of - lots of hets and hints of audio on many splits - but apart from 1548 with great audio and pop music (assuming Emerald, Queensland...) Normally, I would be hearing one top tier JJ station after another after 0700UTC - so far after 10 attempts or so, nothing. Even with a manageable noise level, this is the worse Hawaii conditions I have seen - even HF down here is a wash-out. [IRCA] Signing on from Kona, Hawaii - Day 1
In my possession, a Debock modified Tecsun PL-380 and a stock Grundig G3 (and an FT-60r 2M for the ham radio stuff) A bright light! It is actually electrically quiet this visit. There has obviously been a lot of work done at the condo since the last time I was here - new pool deck, perhaps new lighting, new BBQ, new walkways... And the noise level has dropped from a staggering S9 down to an S1 or S2. In the first few minutes of tuning around (at 19:35 local time), Tahiti is armchair on 738 with lots of hets present. [IRCA] More aboout Easter Island MP3's
There are around 45 MP3 tracks available - Most of them, I think, we sampled at around 128kbps - which is a tad high for the source material. All of them are well labeled as to what they are. I will do one or two of several things: I will add them to the DXer.ca download area - and at a preset time, I will alert our IRCA readers and put them up for 24-48 hours so they will be available to everyone. I can also create a ZIP archive of all the tracks and make a single download available. As I mentioned in a previous post, the DXer.ca ULR file area had over 100,000 downloads in the last 2 years or so. Astounding and refreshing... mostly PDF's and DOC files. I currently pay my ISP around $30 a month for hosting and bandwidth so it has not become unmanageable. As a few of you also know, I am creating a special download library of all the Ian McFarland Series CD's - and we will be expanding on that library in 2012. They are large downloads for a fee - typically 1 hour and 20 minute programs for $2.50 - which Ian and I think is reasonable... all the $ going to his neighborhood food bank and soup kitchen as well. 73 everyone! -- Colin Newell is a Victoria B.C. [IRCA] Interesting ULR statistic
Many of our ULR alumni and enthusiasts will appreciate this observation... I am re-launching the DXer.ca website -- as a University IT guy, I am a true believer in the faster, more secure, more feature rich... school of thought when it comes to web deployment. Now that fact alone is not particularly interesting, what I did discover yesterday while reviewing some of my annual and semi-annual stats on website traffic may astound our readers... while on the subject of the ULR faction within the hobby. As many of our web readers know, DXer.ca features a download area for All things Ultra-light radio... dozens of documents which I tend to call eBooks because that is what they are - story manuals on every facet of this corner of radio world. This, or much of it, was mirrored on the Yahoo ULR group while John Bryant was alive (and still is...) He was true believer in re-duplication and covering all bases where files were concerned. I digress. What I found in my stats reports that the total number of document or eBook downloads in the ULR file area on DXer.ca has now exceeded over 100,000 copies - over a 2 or 3 year period! Which is utterly staggering... and very refreshing - it is a true indication of how very alive our hobby is. This should be celebrated in some fashion. Currently, as I redevelop the site, I am also re-thinking of CD sales section (100% of which goes to a local charity - and we (Ian McFarland and I) are moving to a download library for all spoken word CD sets (by subscription of course...) Seeing how tremendously successful the hobby is, via a handful of interesting statistics gives me much hope for the future. Re: [IRCA] Mini rant on BPL
Thanks for the post, Colin. Man, I thought that BPL was strictly an HF issue, only wiping out shortwave. I have advised the radio station in question -- Telling them that their (up til now) signal has been solid as a rock - and now impinged upon by a mini-appliance might kick up some action. [IRCA] Long winded series on radio listening... online
With the passing of the classic book Passport to World Band Radio it occurred to me that there is a void and a potential niche online - a series on Radio Listening... from the ground up... a Radio Hobby for Dummies if you would... -- although I cannot use that title obviously. I envisioned a series of web pages and articles dedicated to recruiting new hobbyists and energizing the existing ones. I imagine creating this on DXer.ca and then upon its completion being mirrored on a variety of similar websites hosted by other hobbyists. That way the project does not die or get locked down with the loss of the author or its participants. It's going to be a very long and long winded set of distinct web pages (or chapters) and have every facet of the radio listening hobby from AM (MW) Dxing, chasing domestics, ULR listening, collecting, SW, Utilities, Ham, Antennas, accessories, etc. Everything. Nothing left out. Not only will there be pages and pages of useful information in one spot but also a series of Podcasts and even video tutorials. I might be a tad out of my mind because in some ways, this has already been done - there are web pages dedicated to virtually every aspect of the hobby - scattered over the internet. Some sites even have pages of links to all of these sites. The downside of this is that various sites come and go - and what better plan than to have everything under one roof where everyone can access it. Losing the Passport book, for me, (and I imagine most hobbyists) has been a big deal. It left a massive hole in the library of already limited resources for radio hobbyists. This is one small way of filling in that gap. I hope also to have some participation on this project from a variety of hobbyists who are specialists in their own area - Like I said, I do not wish to leave anything out. I would also like to dedicate this project to John Bryant whose departure still hurts, whose contribution to the hobby could never be accurately measured and whose unexpected demise fundamentally changes, in some small way, the way be all see and appreciate the radio hobby. The first chapter is here - http://www.dxer.ca/latest/81-world-radio-101-the-basics-of-world-band-radio please follow the links to the next 2 chapters and comment (positive and negative welcome...) -- Colin Newell is a Victoria B.C. Re: [IRCA] BPL in the home
Real life example (maybe): Walter and I (as well as some local amateurs) are investigating an odd spread spectrum signal in Victoria near the historic Beacon Hill Park. An obvious digital sounding signal nearly obliterates the entire MW band with solid S9 hash... for about 4 city blocks. We have been working towards isolating it to a building or utility pole. Begs the question: Could this be the output of 1 BPL device? My Mom lives near ground-zero of this signal source and enjoys listening to CBC Vancouver on 690khz. And on any radio in her home you can hear the dull roar of this signal underneath the station she is listening to. -- Colin Newell is a Victoria B.C. [IRCA] John Bryant endowment suggestion
Tossing some ideas around as the inspiration comes. John was one of those larger than life guys who could not be contained in one lifetime. And yet. I like to suggest some kind of endowment for John - to enhance and evolve the hobby we have today - moving it forward (to steal a tired phrase). Getting together his collected works, technical and otherwise - and into a book is brilliant. Sponsoring events. Placing radio equipment with new hobbyists. Perhaps even a website that will house, in perpetuity, his memory and works - or better yet, a memorial space for all the folks that made the hobby what it is today. Tossing them out there. [IRCA] John Bryant remembered
Just got the news from one of my brothers, Walter Salmaniw - who was barely consolable. This is, indeed, a loss that we cannot measure, that we cannot comprehend - losing a big man... a smart man. A heart bigger than most radios. Who, alone, made some of the most significant contributions to the betterment of the radio hobby. I had coffee with John a few years back - and one had the sense that he was a born leader - with so much to give... and to quote Walter, I expected another 20 years of John... Let us gather, alone, in groups large and small and raise the glass of our choice - a toast... To our friend John Bryant. And hope - that his journey was swift - and pain free and that the DX where he is now is half as good as he made it here. God speed John Bryant. -- .. Just opened a 25 year old bottle of Scotch. Have been looking at it for some time. And the time was right - to toast a man who left us all way to soon. I share the thoughts, grief and pain of those he loved, those he shared his life with, his family and friends. John's reportage was as integral to the hobby and our environment as the very components that made up our hobby; the Earth, wind, and sky... And now part of our hobby is gone. I received an unusual request a week ago from a guy... someone I figured was an SWL and DXer... The request was for some high quality on air recordings of WWV and WWVH... to be used in a project... On further inquiries... I discovered that the guy was not a guy... but a very beautiful lady -- whose last album was voted top disc of the year in the U.K. Seems she is a DXer and SWL and is working on working WWV into her follow-up album. I would love to reveal who the artist is... but I cannot until well into 2010. Just goes to show - in this hobby, anything is possible! -- .. Re: [IRCA] TP for 16 Dec from Victoria, BC
In spite of Bill's observation of improving conditions this morning, my impression was of deteriorating conditions, at least from 1520UT onwards 828 and 1575 (seemed VoA by direction) had the most audio, reasonable but not great by any means. 774 and 972 were back of the pack in readability, while 594 and 1287 were just mumbles. Good carriers on 1098, 1539 and 1566 all seemed Asiatic, but no chance of audio. All these were fading erratically, and often were worse than the above observations. Better TP conditions at 0645 last night I'm afraid, and they weren't tremendous then either I checked at 1530 today and agree with Nick. I heard some audio on 972 and everything else seemed a wash out. More inclined to spend an extra 10 in bed or in the shower than fiddle with a radio... -- .. Re: [IRCA] not much TP for 4 Dec from Victoria, BC (any?)
Amazingly poor conditions! The solar and geomagnetic conditions are completely flat, and so was the DX. Things were not helped by a new local noise source, but there didn't seem much there to be concealed by the noise. I checked at 1545UTC. 774khz at barely threshold audio... and a het on 972khz. Wow. What a fall from what I was hearing a week ago! Welcome to December folks. -- .. [IRCA] Early Kona action - November 23 2009 0900UTC on
I have decided that it is not really suitable calling the reception that we are having in Kona, Hawaii TP's because they are not trans-pacific at all - that are half-pacific... HP's. Kind of an early warning location for potential reception. Anyway - last night was very interesting... and here is the closest thing I could come to a top to bottom scan and what I generally hear... 0858 UTC 531 - an obvious NHK JJ w/ nothing else on channel 540 - Samoa dominating but w/ a variety of other stuff pushing through... hints of CC later on (within 40 minutes...) 0859 UTC 567 - NHK JJ all the way.. 576khz in Russian (in the clear), 594khz became JJ by 0920UTC, 603khz - KK, 612khz nothing, 620khz domestic, 639khz CC after about 0930 - and nothing of consequence on 640khz 0900 UTC 648 - was just a big het on 650 Honolulu but later grew to sound somewhat FS in some lang other than CC or RR - 0901 UTC - 657 - DPRK - this signal just grew and grew w/ KK martial harangues 0902 UTC - 666 - NHK - JJ all alone. 675 was clearly JJ (NHK1) 0903 UTC - 702 - Open carrier, 711 very big KK, 738 HUGE CC overpowering RFO Tahiti which was the anchor on the channel only an hour earlier. 0904 UTC - 747 - NHK loudest NHK signal a good 15db louder than 774 w/ EE news and features. nothing much up to 819 which was a rock solid KK station (NOrth) 0907 UTC - 855(v) The N. Korean ruling the channel, 873 was JJ-NHK and 882khz was solidly CC programming. 0908 UTC - 891 - a mix of stuff with CC dominating (JJ underneath) - last year it wa Thailand all the time on this channel. 909khz was all-CC, 918Khz was a jumble, 927khz was CC assuming Taiwan by the flavor of the programming and the mentions of Taiwan and Taipei... 954khz almost always JJ City programming 0911 UTC - 963 - a surprisingly quiet channel earlier into the evening - 972khz clearly ruled by the Korean - 0912 UTC - 981 - H-h-h-uge CC and PARALLEL to 999khz, 1008khz in JJ, 1026khz in CC 1035khz a big rumble of off-frequency stations 0915 UTC - 1053 - not sure who the pop mx station, 1071 in CC, 1089 CC, and 1098 Marshall Islands getting hammered by a CC station 0917 UTC - 1116 - interesting ethno-asian sounding chants - could be CC or JJ 0918 UTC - 1125 - Russian speaker of all things...nothing listed in 2009 WRTH - 1134 - Japanese - Tokyo I assume, 1143 a mess, 1152 in lang... 0920 UTC - 1152 - Spanish... not kidding... no mistaking. Russia FS? - 1161 - CC Opera , 1170 a jumble, 1197 in CC, 1206 jumble, 1215khz - jumble, 1242 in JJ, 1260 in JJ, 1278 in CC, 1287 in JJ, 0926 UTC - 1305 - KK, 1314-mix, 1323 CC Opera, 1332 jumble, 1341 in CC, 1350hz in CC, 1359khz in CC, 1368 jumble, 1377khz in CC, 1395khz jumble, 1386khz in Lang (NZ?), 1404khz in CC, 1413khz in JJ, 1431 in JJ, 0934 UTC - 1440 JOWF all the time, 1449khz jumble, 1467 Unid, 1476khz jumble, 1485, 1512 also jumbles... 1521khz OC, 0939 UTC - 1548 Open carrier, 1557khz CC, 1566khz KK, 1575khz jumble, 1584khz jumble, 1593khz Russian w/ CC underneath Whew that is a lot of typing on a keyboard the size of a slice of bread...
