[IRCA] 1400 khz station

2018-01-25 Thread James Niven
I was just checking my Sunday 6am recording, down to 1400 khz. This station
just come out of the blue with female promoting "The Oklahoma City Home and
Garden Show" held Jan 19th to Jan 21st.

Now I checked other stations in Oklahoma on 1400, there is:

KWON Bartlesville and KTMC McAlester, these two stations are East of
Oklahoma City but KREF is in Norman and closer to Oklahoma City and could be
the station I heard.

I would also think these other two stations would be promoting the Home and
garden show as well.

Thoughts??

James Niven

[IRCA] 1400 UTC TP Report Victoria BC Riches to rags

2015-10-27 Thread R. Colin Newell
What looked like a Christmas tree at 11:00 hours this AM
and a State building at 12:00 and 12:30 or so...
has dissolved into a single blinking LED at 14:08 UTC...
The transformation astounding but not surprising considering the
petulant and often childish nature of the ionosphere.

Early this AM (sunset in the Far East I gather...), the band was rich,
across the band,
with a blend of the regulars at stunning levels and 2nd tiers as well as
some of the Chinese
FS and regional services (all based on observations from the NHP SDR Radar
on line and
viewed from the comfort of my bed...), Koreans and what-have-you.

All that is left now is iridescent drizzle courtesy of one or two top tier
NHK stations.

Good DX all,

[IRCA] 1400 The Kingdom

2012-12-18 Thread Chernos Saul

I heard an ID that said something sounding like "1400 The Kingdom" - but on
92.7, in a very brief meteor scatter burst.

I have considered the Detroit MI translator but that would be very
short for meteor scatter, and I have to rule out tropo scatter as there was
nothing
higher-powered from the area. I am curious if any of you hear something other
than
'Kingdom'.

Clip is line, with a few of my FM unIDs as well, at:

http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?7727-Geminids-Ms-unIDs

If some of you have never tried DXing meteor scatter, it's highly enjoyable and
rewarding but I do advise running a recorder, being in the room in case you
hear a sudden rewarding utterance (upon which you check your recording), and
having a good book to read, work to do, or other quiet activity. I once logged
AR on 94.9 while working out!

Thank you for any ideas on these unIDs!

Re: [IRCA] 1400 Graveyard listening for the newbie

2010-12-13 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
I am almost totally opposite as Steve - I DX domestics (US/Canada)
almost exclusively. However I have never had the patience or touch to
DX the Graveyarders (1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490) with much
success. Now I have heard some distant ones, VA, MN and FL for instance
but only a handful on each GY channel, including locals and semi-locals!
I used to DX using a radio's speaker only but after switching to
headphones and earbuds (thanks to the ULR craze), I still find it hard
to pick out ID's and such.

I may have mentioned a few weeks back hearing WOHI E. Liverpool Ohio on
1490. It was like listening to a non-GY channel - I could understand
every song and the ID @ almost 300 miles! That, for me, is the
exception to the rule. What was even better was that WOHI was heard on
a Grundig S-350 using the speaker. Wish they could all be like that!
Normally I catch an ID popping through the jumble.

At any rate, Steve, the GY channels can be a fun challenge.

Good Luck and 73,

Dave in Indy

As almost everyone probably knows, I am anything but a domestic AM DXer.

Several days ago Paul Walker made a request for anyone hearing several
stations. Since one was 100 miles away I figured it would be an easy
listen,
just tune there and have at it. How wrong I was! Not being previously
remotely knowledgable about signals on 1400, I have become much better
acquainted the past 3 days and I admit it's been interesting and even
enjoyable. And I have only heard 1400 KJDY once so far, a brief fadeup
with
mentions of John Day (Oregon). The farthest has been KEYL, MN "Real
Country"
which faded up briefly this morning. Others have been KQMS, CA; KRPL,
ID;
KSPT/KBFI, ID; KBCK, MT; KQDJ, ND; KBCH, OR; KLCK, WA/OR; KEDO, WA;
KODI,
WY. A SS station has been heard several times but no chance for an ID.
It's interesting that the best time is early morning for several hours.
So
far I haven't pulled any audio out of the continuous jumble of stations
mixing together at night.

There's one big reason Alaskan AMs aren't rushing to increase power,
even when they could: the cost of power for transmitters is insane up
there. We're accustomed to paying somewhere between 7 and 20 cents per
kilowatt-hour here in the lower 48; it can easily cost four to five
times that much on the Last Frontier, especially if stations have to

2010-12-12 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
There are no directional AM's in Alaska and probably never will be.. land is
extremely hard to come by and what little you can find, is hard to build on.

KIAL had a CP to go to 4.2KW, still on 1450, but never built it out.. that
would've required a full 1/4 wave tower, albleit a big improvement over the
whip antenna and 50W they'd been using before years until shutting the AM
off and going to FM only.

But technically, in Hawaii.. and Alaska, Graveyard Channels, which are 1230,
1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490 are not Class C's in the 48 US... they are
Class B's and not limited to 1KW.

Steve,

I guess it all have to do with location and the mountain ranges. Here
KJDY is fairly easy at night. Not super commoin, but I hear it several
nights a month when sitting on 1400. 1240 Redmond is still elusive to
me. I hear them, but very hard to get a def ID. The old KPRB was easier.
Now 1340 Bend is easy. Enterprise KWVR 1340 was tough for years with
short hours and 250w. Had great groundwave, but poor skip back in the
70s. Today I hear them often at times. Burns 1230 is still not easy, but
I do hear it on occasion.

old adage "If I knew then what I know now", plus had the room for a

Re: [IRCA] 1400 Graveyard listening for the newbie

2010-12-11 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
Steve, welcome to graveyard dxing! You did fantastic in 3 days..I
checked and see I have 23 stations heard on 1400 kHz (not counting the
myriad call changes). But this from 1957 to now. Most were back before
1990. I have a local over in Berkeley which is very hard to null (when
I can hear anything thru the HNL). Hearing Minnesota is quite a feat.
I think my furthest on a GY were El Paso on 1340 & Casper on 1400...Nice
dxing.

farthest has been KEYL, MN "Real Country" which faded up briefly this

KQDJ, ND; KBCH, OR; KLCK, WA/OR; KEDO, WA; KODI, WY. A SS station has

It's interesting that the best time is early morning for several

of stations mixing together at night.

If I were forced to bet on one it'd be WJZN - only because of the proximity,

[IRCA] 1400 unID in Maine

2010-01-08 Thread Chernos Saul

I had weather for Rockland on 1400 on my east wire a few nights ago. Conditions
were good to New England. I am pretty certain this is Maine - I don't see
anyone serving anywhere close to Rockland County (NY) on 1400, WHTB in Fall
River near Rockland MA is Portuguese, and I can't find other options. Maine
stations include WJZN Augusta (perhaps the closest to Rockland and //WTVL
Waterville), WVAE Biddelford (//WBAE Portland), and WWNZ Veazie.

Any thoughts on this one?

If not, is another test planned? I was among those who tried for, but failed to

Re: [IRCA] 1400 unID Boston Bruins hockey

2008-12-27 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
My first guess would be WLLH 1400 Lowell, MA (with a synch. transmitter in
Lawrence). It could be that 1400 split off from 890 to do hockey on 1400
since 890 would be well within the 1030 coverage, then again, so is 1400.

Just a guess. Their website is http://www.espnboston.com

Perhaps because WBZ uses IBOC ... we're not sure why. But we can't find a

Any leads are appreciated.

Re: [IRCA] 1400 KQMS DX test results

2007-12-16 Thread Bruce Portzer
Walt

I heard those stations, too, plus a couple of IDs for KJDY. KJDY
confused me at first because they gave a dual ID that included KJDY-FM
Canyon City, and coincidentally there's a station on 1400 in Canon City,
CO. Oddly enough, I didn't hear any sign of my semi-local KITZ, which
is only about 20 miles west of here.

I didn't count the code IDs, but there seemed to be an endless string of
them 0332-0337. It may have lasted longer - I didn't bother to replay
the file after that.

I never did hear any voice IDs, but CW was heard at least 11 times. Seems to

transmit it again.
I've sent out files to my CW gurus, Nick and Steve for further analysis. Fun
