Thanks, Tim.

I've noted the carrier here before but this is the first time that any
audio has ever come through. The carrier was stronger than usual so I
decided to stick with it for a while, just in case. Patience paid off!

currently hearing music on 1709.81 that matches up to what I'm hearing on
two remote Kiwi SDRs in Paraguay and Brazil. Given the frequency offset

Re: [IRCA] 1710 oldies

2018-02-21 Thread Brett Saylor
Dave Valko and I were listening last night and heard them sign off at
7:05pm EST with this singing ID. We're debating if the frequency is "1510"
or "1710" and neither of us can make out what comes after the frequency and
before "radio" - a call? a slogan? It hasn't snapped into focus for me yet:

Anyone else have an idea?

That oldies station on 1710 was heard here in central PA yesterday between
6-7pm EST. Signed off with a singing jingle at 7:05pm. Best on the
south-pointed loop, but I'm not convinced that it's actually in that
direction - it could be that loop rejects the QRM from the Hudson NJ TIS
better. Also heard at the same time on a Wash DC-area SDR with equal or

I've heard reports of it being heard well on a western-PA SDR too.

We lost power here for about 30 minutes this afternoon, so what did I
do? Chop wood for the fireplace? No, I got on the radio!

Logged six new navigational beacons on LW and then I moved over to the
AM band and heard a mystery station on 1710. All I heard was Spanish
music - no voice - so no station identification. Station was stronger on
my vertical antenna as compared to my 80-meter inverted Vee. At times,
the Hudson County (NJ) TIS competed with the Spanish music station on
both antennas. And as soon as power was restored, the station
disappeared into the noise.

I have heard this station occasionally at dusk, but have had no luck
identifying it.

Anyone have a clue?

Hmm…my first guess would be the pirate station in Baton Rogue, LA that
gets out very well at night. It’s Spanish language, and they rarely

Maybe a Spanish language pirate from NYC? I remember there was one in
Brooklyn a few years back.

Almost certainly one of the NYC pirates. Some of those have been there for

Probably someone whois closer than I might be able to help with which one.

In the past as today, this station plays music most of the time and

[IRCA] 1710 mystery station

2018-02-09 Thread Stan Horzepa

[IRCA] 1710 QSL

2017-08-10 Thread James Renfrew
I sent a report to the 1710 Springfield Armory on its web its comment
section and received a confirmation just now by e-mail. Response from
Alexander MacKenzie, Curator. Just about the shortest QSL I've ever had:
"Yes! You got us - that's our radio broadcast."

I did verify WLIB back in the 1960s, I got my letter back stamped with
"verified". So that one's the shortest.

The least amount of effort for a QSL was receiving one from that Brooklyn
pirate that was active many years back, on 1610 I think it was. I reported
reception on the NRC list and received an unsolicited QSL! Somehow they
knew my address.

in the week I had an UNID pirate here playing oldies but never any
announcements or informal IDs, and tonight the continuous test tone. A

Thanks, Russ.

I listened to the recording again and noticed that the second song I
heard was actually in English -- sounded like Aretha Franklin. And the
first song was probably in Spanish as I recognized a couple of words per
my two years of high school Spanish in the previous century.

2016-08-25 Thread Stan Horzepa
Overnight, I recorded the 0500 UTC top-of-the-hour using an ELAD FDM-S2
and an 80-meter inverted Vee antenna.

When I play back a recording, I usually start at 1710 in order to get an
idea of band conditions. Typically, I hear the Hudson County (NJ) TIS
and less frequently, the Springfield (MA) Armory TIS. This morning, I
heard both TIS's simultaneously, as well as music from a third
station... either in Spanish or Portugese... but no ID.

Anyone have a clue what the third station might be?

[IRCA] 1710 possible "CHIM FM", pirate?

2015-09-26 Thread Tim Tromp
A bit of a mystery tonight in Michigan. I was tuning around the band and
found a stronger than usual signal on 1710. Religious talk and Christian
pop music from what I could tell with a decent signal but horrible
distorted modulation (at times it sounded better using the FM mode on my
Perseus). There have been occasional mentions of Canada between songs.
Strangely I've also heard what sounds like current weather conditions read
by a female robo voice, similar to the TIS stations that rebroadcast NOAA
weather radio, but this doesn't sound like one of the usual TIS stations
that now populate 1710 from the East. This is sometimes given between
songs for about 30 seconds or so. 0500 UTC now and still going. A bit of
Googling returned a hit for CHIM FM out of Timmins, Ontario:

http://www.chimfm.com/

Note the reference to 1710 AM.

I have no confirmation or ID yet (that I can understand anyway) but
everything seems to point to this station (signal even seems best on the
North D-KAZ).

Anyone know what's going on here? If it's a Part 15 station then I
shouldn't be hearing it from here. Is anyone else hearing this one? How
about you Ontario guys?

I also found this thread on Radioinsight interesting:

[IRCA] 1710 W807 Chicago

2014-11-26 Thread Saul Chernos
I spoke a couple nights ago with the operator of Chicago's 1710 station W807,
who called me after I left a message via a phone number given on-air that led
me to a neighbourhood business.
It's not a Part 15, and is best classified as unlicensed.
It runs between 35 and 100 watts. The country music, the hard rock (Radiohead
and others) - they're all W807. It runs a lot on weekends, sometimes during the
week.
Station's name is derived from the vacuum tube.
For more info: facebook/w807am (not sure if capital or lower case, I simply
accessed it via Google). Google the station creatively and you can find his
name, and more.

I see the posts re 1710. Is there anyone with a recording they can post
of the 3m loop from Springfield MA??

I have been hearing what sounds like American English on 1710 (thats how
weak the signal is, only a few words here and there)

The funny thing is, it seems to be there only at 0500UTC / GMT. I even
recorded 0430 and 0530 today, and find there is no trace. Maybe I should
record an hour around that time.

0500 is first light here, so of course it will be the peak time, but I
did hear the TIS thing from NJ a few times throughout the night some
months ago.

What I seem to be hearing is an OM and YL alternating, and sometimes
some kind of music. I don't seem to have found any words of significance
yet.

I looked last night for the MA Perseus server, but it wasn't on.

2014-02-01 Thread Albert Muick

Hello Ken,

The station was WQFG689 and is the only Emergency Radio Service
authorized on 1710 in the USA. It runs 10 watts from Jersey City, NJ.
It was started during Hurricane Katrina and continues because the
recovery effort continues. You'll hear a lot of Homeland Security PSAs
on the station.

For a QSL, contact:
James Woods, Coordinator of Emergency Management
County of Hudson (WQFG689)
555 County Avenue, Bldg. 11
Secaucus, NJ 07094
USA

My initial letter went unanswered until I followed up with a fax to the
number listed in the FCC database: +1 201 369 5204. Mr. Woods explained
that he was still very busy with the cleanup from the hurricane.

The other station you possibly heard there may have been Radio
Celestial, a NYC church pirate. They were recently busted and fined.
Their signal was quite wide-ranging and they had pictures of it on their
website, which now appears to be streaming only, unless they have
continued transmissions. I have not monitored recently.

The website address is www.smjrc.com. If you hear it again, you can
compare against their webstream.

Congrats on some amazing DX!!

Some QSB as they flutter in and out of the other melee on this frequency.
This sounds like the same station I heard on the night of December 1.

I'm using a Sony ICF-SW7600GR bare back, so they must be getting out pretty

radio programming in between oldies music and vintage ads. Old clips
(1960s) from WMCA, WQXI and others heard. Very entertaining show.
Strong signal into Michigan.

[IRCA] 1710 KHz W807 Mystery station?

2012-10-06 Thread Tim Tromp
Hi All,

I was monitoring 1710 KHz last night and heard something different
around 0200 UTC. A variety of music was heard ranging from Aerosmith to
James Brown. This went on for a good hour or two until an ID finally
around 0320 UTC: More music in just a moment, here on W807 and then
directly into an ad for a Chicago area tattoo parlor. Googling 1710
W807 returned this list of pirate and Part 15 stations on the x-band
and W807 is shown to be from Glasford, IL - a good 180 mile drive or
so from Chicago:

http://www.angelfire.com/mb/exband/misc.html

Here's a video showing part of my reception including the ID and some
music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3ye2ITydcE

At 0330 UTC the station started airing some kind of old-time radio drama
that lasted until at least 0500 UTC and perhaps later.

So my question, has anyone around Chicagoland heard of this W807
station before on 1710 KHz? I was hoping that what I heard was a Part
15 station, but another DXer from Detroit was hearing the same so I
think we can rule that out. Surprisingly, I found only very few
references to W807 on the net.

[IRCA] 1710 KHz The Big Q on right now

2012-09-28 Thread Tim Tromp
The Big Q is being heard here right now at 0226 UTC on 1710 KHz and
much weaker than previous receptions. I haven't heard this one since
earlier this year. Chickenman skits, oldies, AM glory days nostalgia
programming, etc. Always a fun listen. Also, I never recall hearing
The Big Q so early in the evening.

[IRCA] 1710 TIS query

2012-03-31 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

When I logged the 1710 kHz Hudson NJ station on FEB 15 2012 I logged it as
WQFG689 and I see that others named it the same in posts around that time.
I am reviewing a Perseus recording from March 22 and I hear a very clear
WQMD689, Hudson County NJ ID.

Are there several stations in the county with different call signs on the
same channel? Are my ears not working right? Have the calls changed?
Anyone from that area willing to give 1710 a listen?

Thanks.

I'll be in WI in early March and will try to bag that there. Perhaps I can get
this from IL, but the powerlines east of me are extremely noisy since huge
T-storms this summer so I have no antenna aimed that way now, but that doesn't
mean that I can't put down a or reverse the feed and termination on my westerly
Double KAZ antenna to aim east although I expect too much noise.

I'm still wondering why this station is being suddenly so
well heard. Since it's continued for several nights now, we
 can rule out propagation
events. TIS transmitters don't have a provision to allow
cheating by increasing the power. So I'm wondering if they
just came on the air, or
relocated one of the transmitters to a new location?

Still nothing here on 1710 KHz, but I continue to check. If
I could get day off from work, I might install the Wellbrook
loop away from the hash of the
 house and improve my odds.

I'm quite sure I would've noticed them before as well, so I suspect it's a
new transmitter that just came on the air (or was moved to a new location)
this past week. Whether the other four transmitters listed on their license
are also on the air is anybody's guess.

I tuned to 1710 and only heard a lot of noise plus a weak pirate playing
music (R. Celestial). I thought Saul was exaggerating about the TIS being
huge, when, lo and behold, a signal rose up out of the noise with talk about
amber alerts, various PSAs, and WQFG689 ID - and they really were huge for a
few minutes. Thanks for the tip!

BTW, I measured the TIS carrier frequency to be 1710.0032.

Also noted here (two late nights in a row now), 0550-0846 UTC (signal

slick jingles, parady oldie songs, old nostalgic clips of WLS, WABC and
WINS (from when they played music) with lots of old commercial ads tossed
in for an entertaining show. Signal was fadey but generally strong and

Noted today, around 1500UTC another and this time an illegal Hmong station with
Pt. 15 type power on 1710. Just a little background, St. Paul is rich in the
Hmong community and have operated a Pt. 15 station on most of the x-band
frequencies. Sometimes they operated 3-4 stations at a time in different parts
of St. Paul. This in addition to semi-local 1600 and newly acquired 690 within
the past 6 weeks or so.

slick jingles, parady oldie songs, old nostalgic clips of WLS, WABC and
WINS (from when they played music) with lots of old commercial ads tossed
in for an entertaining show. Signal was fadey but generally strong and
booming on peaks. As usual, no contact information given for QSLs or

No, seriously.. I'm asking.. you contradicted yourself there.

if they're Part 15, it's legal.

if they are running multiple Part 15 transmitters slaved together at one
location or multiple transmitters synched together across different
locations, that's legal.

Part 15 AM deals with individual power of each transmitter, not multiple
transmitters together.

2011-10-02 Thread Tim Tromp
DXing from West Michigan - times/dates in UTC

1709.974 khz UNID Pirate - 0415 UTC 10/2/11 - Something different on
1710 tonight, faint but coming up to audio during fade-ups. Heard
parts of Pink Floyd's Money at 0415 and repeated again at 0419. At
0429 a heavy metal song was played. At 0432 official sounding
announcement ..the use of this channel... and faded. At 0451 it
sounded like a documentary program with talk over dramatic music
concerning the 1968 Thule Air Base B-52 crash and the atomic bombs it
was carrying. Then into more talk of nuclear weaponry including many
old newsreel clips about the atomic bomb. This was in and out of the
noise. Still present at 0535 UTC with the same subject matter. By
0600 UTC, Radio Celestial owned the channel with music and later
preaching on 1710.03 khz. A re-check at 0930 UTC revealed the same
1709.974 signal still present. This one was unlike any of the other
stations I've caught here before. The frequency offset doesn't match
Radio Celestial or Radio Soleil Int'l (unless Soleil has changed
within the last year?) I never did catch any kind of station ID or
live announcement. Seven distinct frequency offsets were noted on
1710 during this time. It sure would be interesting to know who each
is. (TROMP-MI)

Around 8:15 A.M. PDT music was heard on 1710 kHz on the Southwest ewe.

Turned the radio back on at 2:00 P.M. PDT and no signal.  Locally not much

Patrick,

My mistake, the signal was heard on the NW long-wire, not the SW ewe.
On the antenna switch I had the coax mixed.  Just corrected the mistake.
I now have four antennas.  Just added the Kiwa loop.  Tonight the only
antenna that can get any audio from 1710 is the NW long-wire and the signal
is only S-2.   The palstar tuner helps when in the tune mode.  Surprised their
still on the air, the Vancouver, WA 1710 Russian station got shut down a few
months after being on the air by the FCC.  I read that the FCC field station in
Portland, OR
keeps it's radio direction finding vehicle in Vancouver, WA.

Thanks Dennis. Yes, the Russian is a regular visitor here nightly.
Depending on Northerly cx, the signal strength does vary. The best
signal is off the NE EWE, aimed pretty much at the Puget Sound. I even
get the Russian station carrier durng the day! Rarely any audio though,
except maybe in mid Winter. You might try for the Fort Lewis TIS in the

[IRCA] 1710 station lately

2011-07-16 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
This past week I've been hearing a 1710 station right at the noise level. It
might be SS, definitely isn't EE. Except for today the format sounds like a
regular station, with M/F DJs who speak after every song, and the music has
been vocals with a strong beat. And the format has been the same until
today. Today a man began speaking, apparently preaching, at 1310 utc and
continued until fadeout at 1330 utc. If SS, he spoke rather slowly, not like
commercial fast-paced SS stations. Frequency is always low, around 60 Hz
low. Best on the E/W longwire.
And I haven't heard the Puget Sound Russian station for several weeks now,
and that one was always close to the proper 1710 frequency.
I've been tuning there once the LF beacons and AMBC TPs fade out, around
1230 utc. Peak signal on this 1710 station seems to be around 1305 utc
currently.

Anyone else hearing something similar to this?

[IRCA] 1710 kHz in Boston Area

2011-04-05 Thread Marc DeLorenzo

Since there has been alot of discussion on this topic recently, I decided to
check out 1710 from Quincy, MA this morning at 0800 EDT. All alone with a
fairly good signal on my Toyota car radio was R. Soleil International,
Brockton, MA in Caribbean French with lively music, a live DJ, and even ads.
Although I don't speak Caribbean French (and VERY little European/Canadian
French), it was easy to note the syntax of an ad and even heard the English
words washer and dryer. Brockton is about 17 miles from Quincy. No trace of
R. Top Inter listed in Dorchester only 5 miles distant. No trace of any
Spanish stations on 1710.

It is also interesting to note that there are Caribbean French stations on
nearly EVERY X-Band channel in Metro Boston. From Quincy, 1670 was the
strongest - loud clear with very good audio quality.

I hope this info is helpful to someone.

Personally, I would like to see ALL of these Pirates shut down ASAP. IMHO, all
they do is clutter up frequencies and kill chances for more distant DX from
legitimate stations.
