The Guard Who Found Islam
Terry Holdbrooks stood watch over prisoners at Gitmo. What he saw made him 
adopt their faith.

Army specialist Terry Holdbrooks had been a guard at Guantánamo for about six 
months the night he had his life-altering conversation with detainee 590, a 
Moroccan also known as the General. This was early 2004, about halfway 
through Holdbrooks's stint at Guantánamo with the 463rd Military Police 
Company. Until then, he'd spent most of his day shifts just doing his duty. 
He'd escort prisoners to interrogations or walk up and down the cellblock 
making sure they weren't passing notes. But the midnight shifts were slow. The 
only thing you really had to do was mop the center floor, he says. So 
Holdbrooks began spending part of the night sitting cross-legged on the ground, 
talking to detainees through the metal mesh of their cell doors.
He developed a strong relationship with the General, whose real name is Ahmed 
Errachidi. Their late-night conversations led Holdbrooks to be more skeptical 
about the prison, he says, and made him think harder about his own life. Soon, 
Holdbrooks was ordering books on Arabic and Islam. During an evening talk with 
Errachidi in early 2004, the conversation turned to the shahada, the one-line 
statement of faith that marks the single requirement for converting to Islam 
(There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet). Holdbrooks pushed a 
pen and an index card through the mesh, and asked Errachidi to write out the 
shahada in English and transliterated Arabic. He then uttered the words aloud 
and, there on the floor of Guantánamo's Camp Delta, became a Muslim.
When historians look back on Guantánamo, the harsh treatment of detainees and 
the trampling of due process will likely dominate the narrative. Holdbrooks, 
who left the military in 2005, saw his share. In interviews over recent weeks, 
he and another former guard told NEWSWEEK about degrading and sometimes 
sadistic acts against prisoners committed by soldiers, medics and interrogators 
who wanted revenge for the 9/11 attacks on America. But as the fog of secrecy 
slowly lifts from Guantánamo, other scenes are starting to emerge as well, 
including surprising interactions between guards and detainees on subjects like 
politics, religion and even music. The exchanges reveal curiosity on both 
sides—sometimes even empathy. The detainees used to have conversations with 
the guards who showed some common respect toward them, says Errachidi, who 
spent five years in Guantánamo and was released in 2007. We talked about 
everything, normal things, and things [we
 had] in common, he wrote to NEWSWEEK in an e-mail from his home in Morocco.
Holdbrooks's level of identification with the other side was exceptional. No 
other guard has volunteered that he embraced Islam at the prison (though 
Errachidi says others expressed interest). His experience runs counter to 
academic studies, which show that guards and inmates at ordinary prisons tend 
to develop mutual hostility. But then, Holdbrooks is a contrarian by nature. He 
can also be conspiratorial. When his company visited the site of the 9/11 
attacks in New York, Holdbrooks remembers thinking there had to be a broader 
explanation, and that the Bush administration must have colluded somehow in the 
plot.
But his misgivings about Guantánamo—including doubts that the detainees were 
the worst of the worst—were shared by other guards as early as 2002. A few 
such guards are coming forward for the first time. Specialist Brandon Neely, 
who was at Guantánamo when the first detainees arrived that year, says his 
enthusiasm for the mission soured quickly. There were a couple of us guards 
who asked ourselves why these guys are being treated so badly and if they're 
actually terrorists at all, he told NEWSWEEK. Neely remembers having long 
conversations with detainee Ruhal Ahmed, who loved Eminem and James Bond and 
would often rap or sing to the other prisoners. Another former guard, 
Christopher Arendt, went on a speaking tour with former detainees in Europe 
earlier this year to talk critically about the prison.
Holdbrooks says growing up hard in Phoenix—his parents were junkies and he 
himself was a heavy drinker before joining the military in 2002—helps explain 
what he calls his anti-everything views. He has holes the size of quarters in 
both earlobes, stretched-out piercings that he plugs with wooden discs. At his 
Phoenix apartment, bedecked with horror-film memorabilia, he rolls up both 
sleeves to reveal wrist-to-shoulder tattoos. He describes the ink work as a 
narrative of his mistakes and addictions. They include religious symbols and 
Nazi SS bolts, track marks and, in large letters, the words BY DEMONS BE

I would like to share this short Story with you which was narrated to us by Dr. 
Saleh as-Saleh (May Allah Have Mercy upon him) in his room Understanding-

The Sheikh began:

Do you want hear this real story which took place here about a hundred years 
ago. (In Saudi) Tayib. This is real! This is real!

He continued:

Bismilaahi Rahmaani Raheem. This story took place here about hundred years ago 
and it was also broadcasted on the radio stations. It is about a man call Ibn 
Jad'aan. He (Ibn Jad'aan) said how during Spring times he used to go out. He 
would see good and healthy fat camels and their udders filled to the extent of 
almost exploding. Whenever the little offspring (i.e. the calf) came close to 
the mother camel, her milk would pour forth because of the great abundance of 
blessings and abundance of goodness.

So I (Ibn Jad'aan) looked at one of my she camels with her calf and I 
remembered my poor neighbour who had seven young daughters. So I said to 
myself, by Allah I will give this camel and her calf as Sadaqah (charity) to my 
neighbour - and he recited the Ayah where Allah said in (Surah Al-imraan: 92):

By no means Shall you Attain piety righteousness unless you spend in Allah's 
cause of which that you love

And the most beloved from amongst my cattle, to me, is this she-camel. So I 
took her along with her calf and knocked on the door of my neighbour. I told 
him to accept it as a gift from me. I saw his face glooming with happiness and 
he was unable to utter anything in response.

So he benefitted from its milk and used to load wood on its back, awaiting for 
its offspring to grow up in order to sell them. Subsequently, he gained great 
good from this camel.

After the spring had passed, the dry summer came with its drought, and so the 
Bedouins began looking for water and grass. We gathered our belongings and left 
our places looking for water and the duhool (plural of duhul) or 'holes' in the 
earth, situated underground leading to water traps underneath the ground. Their 
openings are on top of the ground, as the Bedouins know of very well.

I (i.e. Ibn Jad'aan) entered into one of these holes so as to bring some water 
to drink...

Dr Saleh continued: and his (Ibn Jad'aan's) three sons were waiting for him 
outside the hole. However he did not return. His three sons waited for him for 
one, two and three days and finally became hopeless.

They said maybe he was stung by a snake and died or he was lost under the earth 
and destroyed. They (and we seek refuge in Allah from this) waited for his 
destruction. Why? Due to greed in order to distribute his inheritance.

So they returned home and divided what he had left, amongst themselves. Then 
they remembered that their father (Ibn Jad'aan) gave a she-camel to their poor 
neighbour. They went to their neighbour and told him that it is better that he 
give them back the she-camel and take another camel in replace of it, otherwise 
they will take it by force and he will be left with nothing.

The neighbour complained that he would report them to their father. So they 
informed him that he had died. He inquired as to how and where Ibn Jad'aan had 
died, and why they hadn't told him. They then explained how he entered into one 
of these holes underground in the desert and did not come out.

The neighbour said:  By Allah take me to this place and take your she-camel 
and do whatever you do with it and I don't want your camel in return!

They took him and when he saw the place, he went and brought a rope, lit a 
candle, tied it outside the duhul (the hole) and then stepped into it crawling 
on his back until he reached the places whereby he could crawl and roll. 
Eventually the smell of moisture became closer and then all of sudden he heard 
the sound of a man by the water groaning and moaning.

He went closer and closer towards this sound in the darkness putting his hand 
out all over until his hand fell onto the man (Ibn Jad'aan). He checked his 
breath and he was still breathing after one week! He pulled him out covering 
his eyes so as to protect him from the sunlight. He took with him some dates, 
moistened them in water and gave it to him to drink.

He then carried him on his back and took him to his house and life gradually 
return to this man whilst his sons didn't know. He then asked him: Tell me, by 
Allah, one week while you were underground and you didn't die?!

I will tell you something strange... Ibn Jidaan explained: ...when I went 
down there I got lost and waves took me from all directions and I said to 
myself I'd better stay close to this water that I have reached. So I started to 
drink from it, but hunger had no mercy and water does not suffice. Then after 
three days hunger intensified on me and took me from all parts. While I was 
lying on my back I surrendered myself to Allah and put all my affairs

A humble reminder

One day of the many days
There was a man traveling on a trip with his Wife and Kids
And on the way he met someone standing in the roadway
So he asked him: Who are you?
He said:
I am the money
 
So the man asked his wife and kids :
Should we ask him to ride with us?
 
They said together: Yes of course because with the money it can help us if we 
wanted to do anything, and if we wanted to get anything we desired,
So they took the Money to ride with them.
 
And the vehicle continued its way until the man
met someone else on the road
 
So the Father asked: Who are you?
 
He said:
 
I am the high position and power
 
So the father asked his wife and kids :
Should we ask him to ride with us?
 
So they all answered together in one voice:
 
Yes of course because with the high position and power we have the ability to 
do anything we want and own anything we desired.
 
So they took the high position and power with them
And the vehicle continued to finish its trip .
 
And likewise he met in the same manner many people which give the pleasures and 
desires of this life, UNTIL ..
They met one person on the way..
 
The Father asks him Who are you?
 
He said: I am the Deen (Islam)

 So the father, wife, and kids said all together in one voice: No no this isn't 
the time, we desire the pleasures of this life and dunyah, and the Deen will 
prevent us and ban us from these things and it will take control over us, and 
we will be worn-out from being loyal to it and its learning. And the halal and 
the Haram, and this thing prayer and that thing hijab, and this fasting , and 
and and and and etc, It will be a burden upon us!!! 
But what is certain is that we will definitely return for you to pick you up 
but only after we enjoy this life and everything in it.
 
So sadly they left him behind and the vehicle continued its trip.
 
 
And out of no where something appeared in the middle of the road
 
It was a check point in the road and it had a sign saying
 
STOP!!!
 
And they found a man gesturing for the father to get out of the vehicle.
 
So the man said to the father:
The trip has ended as far as you are concerned
And it is upon you to get out and come with me.
 
 
The father was shocked with fear and didn't say a word.
 
 
So the man said to him: I am searching for the DEEN.e Islam Is he with you?
 
He answered: No I left him not too far back. So if you can let me go back, I 
can get him for you :
 
You do not have the ability to go back, your trip has ended and there is no 
going back now.. returning is impossible said the man.
 
But I have
 
The Money,
The high position and power,
My Wife,
My Kids,
and and and and and and on.
 
The man said to him:
They will not benefit you nor will they
protect you in front of Allah. Not one bit!
 
And you will leave all of this, and not one of them will help you except for 
The Deen e Islam you know? The one which YOU left back in the road.
So the father asked: And who are you exactly?

 I AM DEATH 

The one which you were needless
of and didn't take into account in your trip!!

 The father looked at his vehicle and found his wife taking control of it and 
continuing the trip with all of its passengers but him
And none of them stayed with him, and none of them helped him in any way. 

Abu Hurairah (r.a.) reported: Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
 Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which 
would be like a part of the dark night.  A man would be a believer in the 
morning and turn to disbelief in the evening, or he would be a believer in the 
evening and turn disbeliever in the morning, and would sell his Faith for 
worldly goods Riyadh-us Saliheen Muslim Haidth number 87 Chapter 106
 
Allah says in The Holy Quran Chapter 102 Surah Takhathur verses 1-2:
1    The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good of this world) diverts you 
(from the more serious things; ie. salvation in the life Hereafter)
2    Until ye visit the graves (ie. until one is buried in one's grave!)

Very interesting discoveries of

Dr.Tarig Al Swaidan discovered some verses in the

Holy Qur'an

That mention one thing is equal to another,

i.e. men are equal to women.

Although this makes sense grammatically,

the astonishing fact is that the number of

times the word man appears in

 the Holy Qur'an

is 24 and number of times the word

woman appears is also 24,

therefore not only is this phrase correct in

the grammatical sense but also true mathematically,

Signs of Weak Iman and How to Increase It
 
Signs of weak Faith: 
·    Committing sins and not feeling any guilt.
·    Having a hard heart and no desire to read the Quran.
·    Feeling too lazy to do good deeds, e.g. being late for salat
·    Neglecting the Sunnah. 
·    Having mood swings, for instance being upset about petty things and 
bothered and irritated most of the time.
·    Not feeling anything when hearing verses from the Quran, for example 
when Allah warns us of punishments and His promise of glad tidings.
·    Finding difficulty in remembering Allah and making dhikr. 
·    Not feeling bad when things are done against the Shariah.
·    Desiring status and wealth.
·    Being mean and miserly, i.e. not wanting to part with wealth.
·    Ordering others to do good deeds when not practising them ourselves.
·    Feeling pleased when things are not progressing for others.
·    Being concerned with whether something is haram or halal only; and not 
avoiding makroo (not recommended) things.
·    Making fun of people who do simple good deeds, like cleaning the 
mosque.
·    Not feeling concerned about the situation of Muslims.
·    Not feeling the responsibility to do something to promote Islam.
·    Liking to argue just for the sake of arguing without any proof.
·    Becoming engrossed and very involved with dunya, worldly things, i.e. 
feeling bad only when losing something in terms of material wealth.
·    Becoming engrossed and obsessive about ourselves. 
 
Okay, how to increase our faith then ? 

Recite and ponder on the meanings of the Quran. Tranquility then descends and 
our hearts become soft. To get optimum benefit, remind yourself that Allah is 
speaking to you. People are described in different categories in the Quran; 
think of which one you find yourself in.  
Realize the greatness of Allah. Everything is under His control. There are 
signs in everything we see that points us to His greatness. Everything happens 
according to His permission. Allah keeps track and looks after everything, even 
a black ant on a black rock on a black moonless night.  
Make an effort to gain knowledge, for at least the basic things in daily life 
e.g. how to make wudu properly. Know the meanings behind Allah's names and 
attributes. People who have taqwa are those who have knowledge.  
Attend gatherings where Allah is remembered. In such gatherings we are 
surrounded by angels. 
We have to increase our good deeds. One good deed leads to another good deed. 
Allah will make the way easy for someone who gives charity and also make it 
easy for him or her to do good deeds. Good deeds must be done continuously, not 
in spurts.  
We must fear the miserable end to our lives; the remembrance of death is the 
destroyer of pleasures.  
Remember the different levels of akhirah, for instance when we are put in our 
graves, when we are judged, whether we will be in paradise or hell.  
Make dua, realize that we need Allah. Be humble. Don't covet material things in 
this life.  
Our love for Subhana Wa TaAla must be shown in actions. We must hope Allah will 
accept our prayers, and be in constant fear that we do wrong. At night before 
going to sleep, we must think about what good we did during that day.  
Realize the effects of sins and disobedience- one's faith is increased with 
good deeds and our faith is decreased by bad deeds. Everything that happens is 
because Allah wanted it. When calamity befalls us- it is also from Allah. It is 
a direct result of our disobedience to Allah.

The Inauguration Committee has only released one clergy name so far for the 
Jan. 21 National Prayer Service that caps the inauguration. The Rev. Sharon 
Watkins, the first woman president of the Christian Church (Disciples of 
Christ), a Protestant group, will deliver the sermon.

The Associated Press has learned additional details.

A prayer will be offered at the National Cathedral by Ingrid Mattson, the first 
woman president of the Islamic Society of North America, according to an 
official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized 
to release the information. The Islamic Society is the largest U.S. Muslim 
group.

Three rabbis, representing the three major branches of American Judaism, will 
also say a prayer at the service, according to officials familiar with the 
plans. The Jewish clergy are Reform Rabbi David Saperstein, Conservative Rabbi 
Jerome Epstein and Orthodox Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, sources said.

The foreign secretary, David Miliband, today argues that the use of the war on 
terror as a western rallying cry since the September 11 attacks has been a 
mistake that may have caused more harm than good.
In an article in today's Guardian, five days before the Bush administration 
leaves the White House, Miliband delivers a comprehensive critique of its 
defining mission, saying the war on terror was misconceived and that the west 
cannot kill its way out of the threats it faces.
British officials quietly stopped using the phrase war on terror in 2006, but 
this is the first time it has been comprehensively discarded in the most 
outspoken remarks on US counterterrorism strategy to date by a British minister.
In remarks that will also be made in a speech today in Mumbai, in one of the 
hotels that was a target of terrorist attacks in November, the foreign 
secretary says the concept of a war on terror is misleading and mistaken.
Historians will judge whether it has done more harm than good, Miliband says, 
adding that, in his opinion, the whole strategy has been dangerously 
counterproductive, helping otherwise disparate groups find common cause against 
the west.
The more we lump terrorist groups together and draw the battle lines as a 
simple binary struggle between moderates and extremists or good and evil, the 
more we play into the hands of those seeking to unify groups with little in 
common, Miliband argues, in a clear reference to the signature rhetoric of the 
Bush era. We should expose their claim to a compelling and overarching 
explanation and narrative as the lie that it is.
Terrorism is a deadly tactic, not an institution or an ideology, he says.
He argues that the war on terror implied a belief that the correct response to 
the terrorist threat was primarily a military one - to track down and kill a 
hardcore of extremists. But he quotes an American commander, General David 
Petraeus, saying the western coalition in Iraq could not kill its way out of 
the problems of insurgency and civil strife.
Instead of trying to build western solidarity against a shared enemy, Miliband 
argues it should be constructed instead on the idea of who we are and the 
values we share.
He goes on to say that democracies must respond to terrorism by championing 
the rule of law, not subordinating. It is an argument he links directly with 
the Guantánamo Bay detention camp. That is surely the lesson of Guantánamo and 
it is why we welcome president-elect Obama's clear

I would like to ask one question. I am attending a Tajweed class. Most of the 
reciters after tilawat say  'SadaqaAllahul Azim. Our teacher said that 
according to Sunnah it is not specified and she thinks it is a kind of bidah.
I heard this since my childhood, kindly explain if it is a bidah or sunnah.

What are the mistakes that people make when visiting the Prophet’s Mosque?.
 
Answer:
 
Praise be to Allaah.   


The mistakes that some pilgrims make when visiting the Prophet’s Mosque are of 
several types: 
-1- 
Some pilgrims believe that visiting the Prophet’s Mosque is something that has 
to do with Hajj, and that Hajj is not valid without it. Some of the ignorant 
even think that it is more essential than Hajj. This is a false belief, because 
there is no connection between going for Hajj and visiting the Mosque of the 
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Hajj is complete without 
it, and it is complete without Hajj, but since ancient times people have made 
the visit to the Prophet’s Mosque part of the journey to Hajj, because it is 
difficult to travel twice. But it is not more essential than Hajj, because Hajj 
is one of the pillars and basic principles of Islam, which is not the case with 
visiting the Prophet’s Mosque. We do not know of any scholar who said that it 
is obligatory to visit the Prophet’s Mosque or the grave of the Prophet (peace 
and blessings of Allaah be upon him). 
With regard to the report which says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of 
Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever goes for Hajj and does not visit me has 
snubbed me,” these are words that are falsely attributed to the Prophet (peace 
and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and go against the well known teachings 
of Islam. If it were true then visiting his grave would be one of the most 
obligatory of duties. 
-2- 
Some visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque circumambulate the grave of the Prophet 
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and touch the grille and walls of 
the room. They may even kiss them and lay their cheeks against them. All of 
these are reprehensible innovations, for circumambulation (tawaaf) around 
anything other than the Ka’bah is a forbidden innovation (bid’ah). The same 
applies to touching, kissing or pressing one’s cheeks against the walls; such 
actions are prescribed only in the right areas of the Ka’bah. Worshipping 
Allaah by doing such actions at the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings 
of Allaah be upon him) will only take a person further away from Allaah. 
-3- 
Some visitors touch the mihrab, minbar and walls of the mosque to seek 
blessings. All of that is bid’ah. 
-4- 
This is the most serious mistake: 
Some visitors pray to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) 
to relieve distress or to grant them something they desire. This is major shirk 
which puts a person beyond the pale of Islam, and Allaah and His Messenger do 
not approve of this. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): 
“And the mosques are for Allaah (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with 
Allaah” [al-Jinn 72:18]
“And your Lord said: Invoke Me [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism) 
and ask Me for anything] I will respond to your (invocation) . Verily, those 
who scorn My worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness, 
(Islamic Monotheism)] they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!” [Ghaafir 
40:60]
“Say: ‘It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to the Right 
Path’” [al-Jinn 72:21] 
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) denounced a man who 
said “Whatever Allaah and you will.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah 
be upon him) said, “Are you making me a rival with Allaah? What Allaah alone 
wills.” Narrated by Ibn Maajah 2118. So what about one who calls upon the 
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to relieve his 
distress and to bring him benefits, when he is the one to whom Allaah says 
(interpretation of the meaning): 
“Say (O Muhammad): ‘I possess no power over benefit or hurt to myself except as 
Allaah wills’” [al-A’raaf 7:188] 
“Say: ‘It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to the Right 
Path’” [al-Jinn 72:21]
So the believer should put his hopes in his Creator Who has the power to fulfil

I like your abstract style of expression. But why after all you are a Christian 
in Islam, you should be a Muslim in Christianity.
 One correction, Islam asks its followers to give 1/40th of their wealth every 
year and 1/10th is on the agricultural productions.This is comulsary, But one 
can donate more than that.
I know that Christians are are great donors and philanthropists and they are 
contributing a lot to the needy world.

followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal. it would be as if he fasted 
perpetually.



[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 Kitab Al-Sawm, Number 2611]

Abu Haraira (Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah's Messenger  (sal-allahu- 
alleihi-wasallam ) as saying: The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's 
month. al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is 
prayer during the night.




[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 Kitab Al-Sawm, Number 2612]

Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) reported that He  (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) 
was asked as to which prayer was most excellent after the prescribed prayer, 
and which fast was most excellent after the month of Ramadan. He said: Prayer 
offered in the middle of the night and the most excellent fast after (fasting) 
in the month of Ramadan is the fast in God's month al-Muharram.

















Our Lord! surely we have heard a preacher calling to the faith, saying: Believe 
in your Lord, so we did believe; Our Lord! forgive us therefore our faults, and 
cover our evil deeds and make us die with the righteous.

ETIQUETTES OF  EID UL FITR

Ramadhaan is coming to the end and Eid ul Fitr is fast approaching us. I felt 
it necessary to share with you some information about Eid ul Fitr . Firstly Let 
me tell me the Sunnats that a Muslim should observe on the day of Eid and then 
I would warn you of some evils which have spread amongst us during this day.
 
THE SUNNAHS
 
1 – Doing Ghusl before going out to the prayer. 
It was narrated in a saheeh hadeeth in al-Muwatta' and elsewhere that 
'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Umar used to do ghusl on the day of al-Fitr before going out 
to the prayer-place in the morning. Al-Muwatta' 428. 
 
2 – Eating before going out to pray on Eid al-Fitr and after the prayer on Eid 
al-Adha: 
 
A hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari from Anas ibn Maalik, who said that the 
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used not to go 
out on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates… of which he 
would eat an odd number. Al-Bukhaari, 953. 
 
It is mustahabb to eat before going out to emphasize the fact that it is 
forbidden to fast on that day and to demonstrate that the fast has ended.  But 
on Eid al-Adha it is mustahabb not to eat anything until one comes back from 
the prayer, so he should eat from the udhiyah if he has offered a sacrifice. If 
he is not going to offer a sacrifice there is nothing wrong with eating before 
the prayer. 
 
3- Zakaat al-Fitr is due on this day .
 
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined that it should 
be paid before the Eid prayer.
 
It is permissible to pay it one or two days before that, because of the hadeeth 
of Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) which was narrated by 
al-Bukhaari: They used to give it one or two days before (Eid) al-Fitr. If it 
is paid after the Eid prayer, it does not count as Sadaqat al-Fitr, because of 
the hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbaas: Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is Zakaat 
al-Fitr, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity. It is 
haraam to delay Zakaat al-Fitr until after the Eid prayer. If one delays it 
with no excuse then it is not acceptable zakaah, but if there is an excuse – 
such as if a person is traveling and does not have anything to give or anyone 
to give it to, or he is expecting his family to pay it and they are expecting 
him to pay it, then in this case he should pay it when it is easy for him to do 
so, even if that is after the prayer, and there is no sin on him because he has 
an excuse. 
 
4 – Takbeer on the day of Eid 
 
One of the greatest Sunnahs on the day of Eid  is saying Takbeer because Allaah 
says (interpretation of the meaning): 
 
(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must 
magnify Allaah [ i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Most Great)] 
for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him[al-Baqarah 2:185] 
Al-Daaraqutni and others narrated that on the morning of Eid al-Fitr and Eid 
al-Adha, Ibn 'Umar would strive hard in reciting takbeer until he came to the 
prayer place, then he would recite takbeer until the imam came out. 
Naafi' ibn Jubayr used to recite takbeer and was astonished that the people did 
not do so, and he said, Why do

against the war; I've spoken on anti-war platforms, on Muslim and non-Muslim 
events. But as soon as I put on a hijab (the Arabic word for the Muslim veil), 
I was called an extremist for my views. 

Yvonne finds that interesting. You can't win, she fiercely says. You're 
criticized one minute for being silent, subjugated, oppressed and not saying 
anything. And when you do say something, they say: 'Oh, she's an extremist.'

Although, before her conversion, she recalls looking at veiled women as 
'silent, oppressed creatures', she now wears her veil as a means to show her 
Muslim identity, and to be respected as a Muslim who does not want to be 
offered a glass of wine.

Now that she has 'seen the veil from both sides', as she describes herself, 
Yvonne knows what she defends - Islam purely and simply. 

The grades used - largely by Western media - to measure the levels of Islam 
such as 'moderate Muslim' and 'Islamist', are nonsense in her eyes. What is a 
moderate and what is an extremist? I really don't know, she says. I am a 
simple Muslim. I follow no scholars or sects. I merely follow the Prophet 
Mohammad and the Sunnah (the Arabic word for Prophet Muhammad's tradition). 
Does that make me an extremist?

I once said being a Muslim is a bit like being pregnant. You are or you are 
not. Whoever heard of anyone being moderately or extremely pregnant?

Yvonne strongly opposes distortions and manipulations about Islam. She once 
declined an offer by a Hollywood producer who, after having read her book, In 
the hands of the Taliban, expressed an interest in making a film, but had 
misinterpreted the Taliban as dirty, filthy, stinking Arabs. 

First of all, the Taliban are not dirty filthy stinking Arabs as you call 
them, Yvonne replied her. They're largely from Afghanistan and Pakistan. 
Furthermore, they were all very handsome young men.

When her agent then insisted on Yvonne to agree for producing the story, she 
said, I never had money in my life, so I don't know what I'm missing, but 
there is no way I am going to allow somebody with such a narrow vision to do 
that story, because it would be totally distorted.

It seems that, if not confiscated, Yvonne's camera would have pictured the 
Afghans from a different perspective than many others'. But her pen did.

The Islamic Society of North America
  Geert Wilders is a Dutch politician who broke with a mainstream national 
party to form his own extreme-right, anti-immigrant platform.  Wilders has 
directed most of his hatred in recent years at Muslims.  Wilders has called for 
the Qur’an to be banned and in the last few months has been promoting his 
“documentary” attacking the Qur’an.  Wilders has intimated that the documentary 
will show a copy of the Qur’an being desecrated or destroyed. 
  Geert Wilders wants the Qur’an to be banned.  Many Muslims want Wilders’ film 
to be banned.  Wilders wants Muslims out of “his country” and to be denied the 
rights of other citizens to practice their faith.  No doubt, many Dutch Muslims 
wish that Wilders would just go away (and Wilders has received threats of 
violence from some).  Neither Wilders nor these Muslims will (or should) get 
what they want.  Now what?
  Many have looked to this situation only through the lense of the law.  News 
articles have focused on threats made to Wilders’ life and the calls to ban his 
film.  Of course, the threats are unacceptable and criminal.  Wilders should be 
afforded the full protection of the law and those threatening violence against 
his person should be prosecuted.
  As for the right of freedom of speech, Wilders’ film should be treated like 
other statements within Dutch law.  The Netherlands, like most other countries, 
has certain restrictions on speech that is defamatory, libelous or insults a 
group of people based on their race or religion.  The Dutch Prime Minister has 
publicly stated that if the film, once released, is judged to have violated the 
law, then his government has the duty to enforce their legislation.  This 
treatment of Dutch Muslims as equal citizens under the law shows to the Muslim 
world that the Netherlands is not an enemy to Islam.
  My plea is that we also need to look at this issue more broadly so we can 
find better ways of living together in a world in which there will always be 
people whose views and beliefs we find odd or even obnoxious.  We should not 
justify or excuse extremism of any kind, whether they are racist and hateful 
attacks on the Muslim community or vigilante violence by Muslims against those 
who make such statements.  What we should try to understand is why some 
otherwise ordinary people feel caught in the middle, and are sometimes 
attracted, in part, to the emotional appeals of the extremists.
  In the last few decades most societies in the world have gone through 
enormous transitions.  Many European countries have had to give up significant 
symbols of their national sovereignty to join the European Union and even those 
who did not join the EU have seen significant changes in their societies due to 
globalization.  Even those who have benefited economically and in other ways 
from these changes are sometimes are troubled by the loss of traditional forms 
of communal solidarity and culture: local farmers’ markets, church pews filled 
with families on a Sunday morning, neighborhood bakeries and craftsmen; 
landscapes, streetscapes and the rhythm of life have changed.  Perhaps each 
generation has a limited capacity for change, or perhaps none of us, as 
progressive as we claim to be, can help but romanticize the society of our 
youth.  
  An increased presence of Muslims in Europe, while part of this change, is not 
the cause of all these changes.  Muslims did not cause a decline in attendance 
at European churches; they were not responsible for the fact that some churches 
have been turned into museums or bars.  Muslims did not cause the declining 
birth-rate in many European societies.  But the fact that Muslims are building 
mosques and attending religious services in higher numbers than European 
Christians, and that many Muslims have larger families than most European 
Christian families, makes Muslims easy targets of scapegoating.  Europe has 
seen this kind of ethnic hatred before in its history.  Financially-successful 
Jews were for many centuries viewed with jealously and resentment by some

Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no 
longer be suitable for vegetarians.   Also affecting brands such as Snickers 
and Maltesers, owner Masterfoods said it had started to use animal product 
rennet to make its chocolate products.   Masterfoods said the change was due to 
it switching the sourcing of its ingredients and the admission was a 
principled decision on its part.   The Vegetarian Society said the company's 
move was incomprehensible.   'Extremely disappointed'   Masterfoods said it 
had started using rennet from 1 May and non-affected products had a best 
before date up to 1 October.  Masterfoods' decision to use 
non-vegetarian whey is a backward step 


Vegetarian Society

  Rennet, a chemical sourced from calves' stomachs, is used in the production 
of whey.   It will now also be found in Bounty, Minstrels and Milky Way 
products, and the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.   If the 
customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are 
no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate, 
said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.   The Vegetarian 
Society said it was extremely disappointed.   At a time when more and more 
consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods' 
decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step, it said in a 
statement.   Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be 
shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of 
rennet from the stomach lining of young calves, it added.

Calling to Allah is Everyone’s Job


   Sheikh Salman al-Oadah

 

Calling to Allah was the essential duty of all the Prophets (peace be upon 
them). 

In the Qur’ân, Allah gives Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the following 
command: 

  “Say: This is my way; I call to Allah upon clear knowledge, I and those who 
follow me. Glory be to Allah! And I am not of those who engage in polytheism.” 
[Sûrah Yûsuf: 108]



The Prophet (peace be upon him) carried out this duty throughout his life. It 
was then taken up by his Companions and those who followed after them. The 
Muslims have been carrying this duty out ever since.


Calling people to Allah is an activity that is open to all Muslims. It is not 
restricted to any group of people. It is not some exclusive discipline that can 
only be practiced within a narrow conceptual framework. It is a general 
volunteer enterprise that can be carried out by all Muslims in all walks of 
life. They can call people to Allah in in the context of all their lawful 
pursuits.


It is a duty that should be carried out even by those Muslims who regard 
themselves as sinners. All people are sinners. We are all human, and we all 
make mistakes. If every sinner refrained from exhorting others to 
righteousness, then who would exhort others to righteousness after the Prophet 
(peace be upon him)?


The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 

  “All the descendants of Adam are prone to err, and the best of those who err 
are those who are penitent.” 

  [Sunan Abî Dâwûd]



Calling people to Allah is a duty that has been voluntarily carried out 
throughout the ages not only by preachers, scholars, and reformers, but by all 
those who care about Islam and the Muslims, and who long for Islam to spread. 
Today, these efforts can also be seen in people’s efforts for the uplifting and 
reform of society.


  There is no specialist cadre or social caste with an exclusive jurisdiction 
over Islamic work...



~ A person who gives good advice to others is a caller to Islam.

~ A person who provides social services is a caller to Islam. 

~ A person engaged in humanitarian work is a caller to Islam.

~ The same can be said for a person who does charitable work, 

~ or who supports reforms, 

~ or who works for social justice,
 
~ or who seeks to dispel misinformation and misunderstandings.

~ Indeed, even someone who merely provides people with lawful alternatives to 
their sinful deeds is someone engaged in calling to Allah. 

This is because the person to whom you wish to present Islam needs a conducive 
environment to make it easy for him to accept what he is being called to. 

Therefore, 

~ any effort we make to bring people to betterment or to take them away from 
wrongdoing is a step towards calling them to Allah. 

Such acts are virtuous and charitable, and we are enjoined to be charitable to 
others...

This should leave us in no doubt about the Quran, being the words from
Allah (Ref. Surah Ar Rahman in particular). And it should re-enforce
our belief about each and every word said there-in. Once the belief is
there, what is stopping us from putting our trust in Allah SWT for all
our worldly matters, in tolerating things which are small discomforts,
and focusing our attention on the never ending life of Akhirat,
success in which comes ONLY with attaining the pleasure of Allah SWT.

BEAUTIFUL HADITH

 Rasulullah (Prophet Muhammad) Sallalloho alaihe Wa-aalay wasallam) said:

 When a man dies and his relatives are busy in funeral, there stands an
 extremely handsome man by his head. When the dead body is shrouded, that
 man gets in between the shroud and the chest of the deceased. When after
 the burial, the people return home, 2 angels, Munkar and Nakeer
 (names of two special Angels), come in the grave and try to separate
 this handsome man so that they may be able to interrogate the dead man in
 privacy about his faith.

 But the handsome man says,

 He is my companion, he is my friend. I will not leave him alone in any
 case. If you are appointed for interrogation, do your job. I cannot
 leave him until I get him admitted into Paradise '.

 There after he turns to his dead companion and says,
 'I am the Qura'an, which you used to read, sometimes in a loud voice and
 sometimes in a low voice. Do not worry.
 After the interrogation of Munkar and Nakeer, you will have no grief.
 When the interrogation is over, the handsome man arranges for him from
 Al-Mala'ul A'laa (the angels in Heaven) a silk bedding filled with
 musk'.

 Rasulullah (Prophet Muhammad Sallalloho alaihe Wa-aalaywasallam) said:

 'On the Day of Judgement, before Allah(God), no other intercessor will
 have a greater status than the Qura'an, neither a Prophet
 nor an angel.'

 Please keep forwarding this 'Hadith' to all ...because

 Rasulullah(Sallallo ho alaihe Wa-aalay wasallam) said:

 'Pass on knowledge from me even if it is only one verse'.

(Ottawa, Canada - Sept 27, 2007) - The Canadian Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR-CAN) and Islamic Social Services Association (ISSA) today
said there should be no stigma attached to rape or sexual assault victims.
Both Muslim groups also urged women to report every incident of sexual
violence.

CAIR-CAN and ISSA are seeking to clarify the Islamic position on attitudes
toward victims of sexual violence following a recent report that a Muslim
university student who was sexually assaulted is concerned about a possible
negative response from the community.

In a joint statement the two organizations said:

Victims of any crime, and particularly the crime of sexual assault, must
have the support of both the justice system and of the communities in which
they live. Faith is a source of comfort, not a source of shame for the
victims.

There is no stigma associated with rape or sexual assault victims in Islam.
The Quran clearly states that no person should be punished for the
wrongdoing of another. If anything, a stigma should be linked to the
perpetrator. Islam puts a positive duty on each and every individual in the
community to fully support victims.

Only a distorted cultural view would motivate someone to reject a victim of
sexual assault. This callous attitude has absolutely no place in Islam.

Women's rights, often misunderstood, have been central to the teachings of
authentic Islam for 14 centuries. Quranic verses (6:164), (17:15), and
(53:38) state that no one should be published for the crimes of another. 

CAIR-CAN and ISSA are urging victims of sexual assault or domestic abuse to
call ISSA at 1-866-239-ISSA. A booklet on how to help victims of sexual

garden. And there, in the cool of the day, the Master of the garden was wont to 
walk. Of all the denizens of the garden, the most beautiful and most beloved 
was gracious and noble bamboo. Year after year, bamboo grew yet more noble and 
gracious, conscious of his Master's love and watchful delight, but modest and 
gentle withal. And often when the wind came to revel in the garden, Bamboo 
would cast aside his grave stateliness, to dance and play right merrily, 
tossing and swaying and leaping and bowing in joyous abandon, leading the Great 
Dance of the garden, Which most delighted the Master's heart. 
  Now, once upon a day, the Master himself drew near to contemplate his Bamboo 
with eyes of curious expectancy. And Bamboo, in a passion of adoration, bowed 
his great head to the ground in loving greeting. The 
  Master spoke: Bamboo, Bamboo, I would use you. 
   
   Bamboo flung his head to the sky in utter delight. The day of days had come, 
the day for which he had been made, the day to which he had been growing hour 
by hour, the day in which he would find his completion and his destiny. 
  His voice came low: Master, I'm ready. Use me as Thou wilt. Bamboo, – 
The Master's voice was grave --- I would have to take you and cut you down! 
   
   A trembling of great horror shook Bamboo…Cut …me… down ? Me.. who 
thou, Master, has made the most beautiful in all thy Garden…cut me down! Ah, 
not that. Not that. Use me for the joy, use me for the glory, oh master, but 
cut me not down! 
  Beloved Bamboo,—The Master's voice grew graver still—If I cut you not 
down, I cannot use you. 
  The garden grew still. Wind held his breath. Bamboo slowly bent his proud and 
glorious head. There was a whisper: 
  Master, if thou cannot use me other than to cut me down.. then do thy will 
and cut. 
  Bamboo, beloved Bamboo, I would cut your leaves and branches from you also. 
  Master, spare me. Cut me down and lay my beauty in the dust; but would thou 
also have to take from me, my leaves and branches too? Bamboo, if I cut them 
not away, I cannot use you. 
   
  The Sun hid his face. A listening butterfly glided fearfully away. And Bamboo 
shivered in terrible expectancy, whispering low: Master, cut away 
  Bamboo, Bamboo, I would yet… split you in two and cut out your heart, for 
if I cut not so, I cannot use you. Then Bamboo bowed to the ground: Master, 
Master… then cut and split. 
   So did the Master of the garden took Bamboo…
and cut him down…and hacked off his branches…and stripped off his 
leaves…and split him in two…and cut out his heart. 
   And lifting him gently, carried him to where there was a spring of fresh 
sparkling water in the midst of his dry fields. Then putting one end of the 
broken Bamboo in the spring and the other end into the water channel in His 
field, the Master laid down gently his beloved Bamboo… And the spring sang 
welcome, and the clear sparkling waters raced joyously down the channel of 
bamboo's torn body into the waiting fields. Then the rice was planted, and the 
days went by, and the shoots grew and the harvest came. 
   In that day Bamboo, once so glorious in his stately beauty, was yet more 
glorious in his brokenness and humility. For in his beauty he was life 
abundant, but in his brokenness he became a channel of abundant life to his 
Master's world. 
  Let`s ponder on our own lives and think how much we can sacrifice for the 
sake of our Master, Allah swt to spread peace and happiness..

  The Tailor's Needle
   
   A tailor was at work. He took a piece of cloth and with a pair of shining, 
costly, scissors, he cut the cloth into various bits. Then he put the pair of 
scissors at his feet. Then he took a small needle and thread and started to sew 
the bits of cloth, into a fine shirt. When the spell of sewing was over, he 
stuck the needle on to his turban. 
   
   The tailor's son who was watching it asked him: Father, the scissors are 
costly and look so beautiful. But you throw them down at your feet. This needle 
is worth almost nothing; you can get a dozen for an anna. Yet, you place it 
carefully on your head itself. Is there any reason for this illogical 
behaviour? 
  Yes, my son. The scissors have their function, no doubt; but they only cut 
the cloth into bits. The needle, on the contrary, unites the bits and enhances 
the value of the cloth. Therefore, the needle to me is more precious and 
valuable. The value of a thing depends on its utility, son, not on its 
cost-price or appearance. 
   Similarly, there are two classes of people in the world-those who create 
dissensions and disharmony, who separate man from man; and those who bring 
about peace and harmony, who unite people. 
   
The former are generally the rich people, powerful politicians and kings; 
the latter are generally the poor devotees of Allah swt, the penniless 
wandering monks, and mendicants. The Lord makes use of both to carry on his 
function of providing the field for the evolution of individual souls. He 
throws down on the dust the mighty kings and millionaires who create wars and 
disharmony; and He keeps the poor, pious devotee over His own head.  In His 
eyes the scale of values is entirely different!

The lion, rats, snake and the honey comb - a beautiful story
Hopefully, this story will be beneficial for everyone, Inshallah. 

Once a man saw in his dream, that a lion was chasing him. The man ran to a 
tree, climbed on to it and sat on a branch. He looked down and saw that the 
lion was still there waiting for him. The man then looked to his side where the 
branch he was sitting on was attached to the tree and saw that two rats were 
circling around and eating the branch. One rat was black and the other one was 
white. The branch would fall on the ground very soon. The man then looked below 
again with fear and discovered that a big black snake had come and settled 
directly under him. The snake opened its mouth right under the man so that he 
will fall into it. The man then looked up to see if there was anything that he 
could hold on to. He saw another branch with a honeycomb. Drops of honey were 
falling from it. The man wanted to taste one of the drops. So, he put his 
tongue out and tasted one of the fallen drops of honey. The honey was amazing 
in taste. So, he wanted to taste another drop. As he did,
 he got lost into the sweetness of the honey. Meanwhile, he forgot about the 
two rats eating his branch away, the lion on the ground and the snake that is 
sitting right under him. After a while, he woke up from his sleep. 

To get the meaning behind this dream, the man went to a a pious scholar of 
Islam. The scholar said The lion you saw is your death. It always chases you 
and goes where ever you go. The two rats, one black and one white, are the 
night and the day. Black one is the night and the white one is the day. They 
circle around, coming one after another, to eat your time as they take you 
closer to death. The big black snake with a dark mouth is your grave. It's 
there, just waiting for you to fall into it. The honeycomb is this world and 
the sweet honey is the luxuries of this world. We like to taste a drop of the 
luxuries of this world but it's very sweet. Then we taste another drop and yet 
another. Meanwhile, we get lost into it and we forget about our time, we forget 
about our death and we forget about our graves. 

May Allah wake us up from the sleep and save us before it's too late. Ameen.

There are times when we women are our own worst enemies. And I despair at
the way the global sisterhood is often fractured and splintered by women who
do more damage than any chauvinists. A classic example was brought to my
attention recently after a group of long-suffering neighbours smashed their
way into a Pakistan brothel and kidnapped the owner.

Hooray! I hear most feminists cry. But for some reason the reaction changes
when you mention the activists wore veils and were from a nearby religious
school. Suddenly there are outcries from the media about Taliban-style
behaviour of burqa clad zealots. It was actually the first time such
courageous, direct action had been taken against the growing prostitution
and sex trade in Pakistan. A trade, may I remind everyone, which is
illegal in most parts of the so-called civilized world as well as in
Pakistan.

The madrassa girls also demanded that local video owners close their stores
or start selling Disney instead of dirt. I have seen evidence of the sort of
hard core porn videos they are complaining about.

We are talking about stuff you couldn't even buy under the counter in most
European red light districts. So did the global sisterhood rally around the
Pakistan brothel busters and congratulate them? Sadly not, and one local
writer in particular berated their actions but more about her later.

Of course the Jamia Hafsa madrassa has a reputation for being a thorn in the
side of the city administrators and Pakistan's President General Musharraf.
Shortly after the raid I saw some ridiculous media reports about the
so-called Talibanisation of Pakistan and the behaviour of the students of
the madrassa cited as a prime example. The porn and sex industry is loathed
by all feminists because it feeds off the blatant exploitation of women in
an industry set up purely for the gratification of men who hand over money
to other men who control the women.

In Pakistan's tribal areas and in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP),
religious groups have sought to introduce Islamic law to stamp out the sex
industry. These groups have, by the way, being democratically elected into
Pakistan's government so they are not exactly self-appointed. They did make
their views known quite clearly in their election manifestos so if shops
trading in sex and porn across the tribal areas and in parts of NWFP were
forcibly closed it could hardly have come as a surprise. Yet the media calls
it Talibanisation.

I would call it an attempt to introduce some respect towards women. Western
feminists have been trying to put a spanner in the works of the sex industry
for decades and certainly long before the arrival of Mullah Omar's long
bearded and turbanned Talibs. The concept of the 'Top Shelf' in newsagents
and supermarkets is a small tribute to the anti-porn campaigners.

But let's get back to this brothel in Islamabad. It has been around for
years and the authorities have conveniently turned a blind eye despite
frequent protests. However, the Hafsa sisters insist they were prompted to
take direct action when a young woman was forcibly recruited to become a
prostitute, allegedly gang raped with the crime photographed so it could be
used as blackmail against her should she complain.

It then transpired that other innocent girls had allegedly been abducted and
forced into prostitution. Sadly, the male-dominated authorities in
Islamabad and elsewhere in Pakistan continue to turn a blind eye and women
continue to be exploited. It is an unjust story which is repeated all too
often in corrupt, male-dominated societies East and West.

However, I really can not describe the despair I felt after being shown an
article by a female writer Naushaba Burney in a recent edition of Pakistan's
The Dawn Newspaper entitled 'In The Name of Religion'. Does she praise the
women from the madrassa for their heroic actions? Does she hell! Instead she
pours forth criticism from a quill dipped in misogynistic bile against a
group of women whose only crime appears to be their piety and poverty. She
opens her article with the sentence: These days Talibanisation no longer
creeps, as some newspapers like to say, it zips and flies straight to where
it smells a kill, from wherever it rears its unwelcome head.

The Lal Masjid-like influence is all too visible over big cities today. It
is surely quite easy to nip the disease in the bud in Islamabad, in the
government's own backyard, if the government so decides. But once it takes
root in a teeming city like Karachi with its tentacles spread in every
direction, the whole country risks being dragged back into the dark ages. I
know very little about Naushaba Burney other than she seems reluctant to
acknowledge that the wearing of the hijab or

  Earlier we had a Christian CJ A R Cornelius too and he was a great man.
   This act 'll support the idea that we Muslims are very tolerant and have 
great support for minorities. I wish that justice Baghwan das is capable of 
this post and this is a good sign for democracy in Pakistan.

  Macon, GA (WMAZ-TV) - Mayor C. Jack Ellis, a practicing Christian 
throughout his life, on Thursday said he's switched to the Islamic faith.

The mayor said the conversion also means he'll be going through the legal 
process of changing his name. His new name will be Hakim Mansour Ellis. The 
mayor said he kept his last name to maintain family ties.

It's a personal decision, a private decision as to how one worships. But I do 
understand that I'm not a private person, Ellis said. But being the mayor of 
the city, I think people have a right to know what I believe in, that I am a 
man of faith, and the faith I'm now a part of is the faith of Islam.

He now calls himself a Sunni Muslim. He made the switch, Ellis said, during his 
December trip to Africa. Rather than call it a switch, Ellis said it was like 
returning home.

I went back to my roots I guess you could say, Ellis said. I did convert to 
Islam in December of this past year in the country of Senegal. When I say, 
back to my roots, Islam was in Senegal prior to the Africans being brought 
here as slaves.

Since converting, Ellis said he attends the Islamic Center on Bloomfield Road 
during Friday worship services. He also said he's practicing the Islam doctrine 
of praying five times each day.

Ellis said he discussed his decision with his family and siblings before making 
it public.

Now, I'm sharing with my broader family, the Macon community who supported me 
when I was a Christian and trust that they will now, Ellis said. I'm the same 
person even though I'll be changing my name.

Even though he switched religions, the mayor said he isn't ranking them.

I'm not saying that one is better than the other, Ellis said. We do believe 
that the prophet Mohammed was the last prophet as well as we believe Moses was 
a prophet.

Prior to the conversion, Ellis said he attended Unionville Baptist Church on 
Houston Avenue and before that Harvest Cathedral on Rocky Creek Road.

The mayor completes his second consecutive four-year term in December and isn't 
eligible for re-election. But Ellis said he might run for Georgia's 8th 
District congressional seat in 2008.

Steve Allen, chair of the Bibb County Democratic Party, said a person's faith 
is his or her personal choice. But because most of the 8th District is 
Christian and conservative, Allen said the mayor might have a more difficult 
time winning the 8th District.

Ellis said he hopes people respect his decision and will call him by his new 
name.
