Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws And Anti-virus
Hi. I trust Windows Defender / Microsoft Security Essentials well enough. The reported reason it doesn't rate as well as everyone else is two fold 1. It doesn't bother blocking non realistic issues that are only really applicable in test cases and not a real world concern 2. Its detection engine is available to all anti virus applications like AVG and so on because Microsoft's goal really is to set the standard. The theory here is that all other AV applications should be as good as MSSE, then a little better because they should be using the detection engine features or what ever you call that, which MSSE does as a baseline. Why bother reinventing the wheel? Then they focus on making theirs better, I hope. Now, before anyone asks me to quote sources, I have none. I read something like my number 2 item somewhere, and I'm making an educated guess on the number 1 item. Where I read the number 2 item from I don't recall, it's been over a year since then. That said, take what I say as just that, something I said, and not necessarily the truth, but also, keep in mind that I practice what I preach, MSSE and Windows Defender are all that I run continuously on my computers and to the best of my knowledge, it has been doing a decent job. Last night, an AVG update occurred, which literally made Jaws totally unusable. I've now completely uninstalled AVG, and Jaws works perfectly. Has anyone else had this problem with AVG, and if so, how did you deal with it? If AVG is not the most Jaws-friendly anti-virus program to be using with Jaws, does someone have recommendations for a more Jaws-friendly anti-virus program? I'd prefer to stick with free anti-virus software if possible. Any help would be appreciated, since I am not comfortable running this computer without anti-virus software. Re: [JAWS-Users] accessing list boxes on IE 11
That was in the event that one needed to make disjoint selections or combine selections from different lists. You may be thinking of ctrl+F8 (I think that was the keystroke. That, or F8 with shift and/or ctrl+shift.) I'm not sure that'd work though. If you have another browser, try with it instead. (And JAWS does not give that key info in its Help system.) -Original Message- From: Anne Sent: Thursday, May 14, 2015 10:00 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] accessing list boxes on IE 11 I've done it all! - Original Message - From: "Rick Justice" To: Sent: Thursday, May 14, 2015 1:48 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] accessing list boxes on IE 11 Have you tried turning on keyboard help while on the web page, to look for the correct key combination? If you did have the desktop shortcut, you could then use Windows + D or M to take you to the desktop, then press the letter J to find the JAWS icon, and press enter on it to open a set of links to each menu. Then you can select the Help menu and open the Start Up Wizard to disable JAWS from running from the system tray. Hi. If you're running windows 8 just use windows defender. Otherwise, use microsoft Security Essentials. That's what I've been doing at least. I'm happy. If you need a download link for Security Essentials (remember windows defender is actually Security Essentials if you're running windows 8 or 8.1 or 10 so don't download security essentials for those OS's) http://microsoft.com/securityessentials also in case someone realizes that Windows 7 has Windows Defender, that is not Security Essentials on Windows Vista and Windows 7, completely different program just to confuse everyone so Security Essentials is still Relevant there. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws And Anti-virus
I haven't had problem with it, but lately, my husband has monitored it. I just made a quick check and wasn't getting very far. JAWS does read when it is updating and gives the percents. It has been very serviceable in terms of computer safety. I am afraid that more and more programs are becoming more challenging. My husband was a graphic artist (printer), and he told me that all printed material is becoming more graphic and more reader challenged, even hard copy other than statements or plain text documents. He also taught electronics in community college, so he keeps my computer in top shape. I am guilty of becoming a little lazy in some areas. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws menu
To use Alt Tab, it works better for me in this case, when I'm reading these posts, I have a Microsoft Word File called Computer stuff. I am copying instructions given so that when I have to give up Outlook Express, I will already have some instructions. It works perfectly if I go to Microsoft Word and call up Computer Stuff. Ann, did you try pressing insert+tab after arrowing down/up even though using the arrow keys don't seam to work? sometimes the list is not recognized by JAWS properly to provide feedback. the selection does move but JAWS doesn't announce the change. another possibility is another color is being used to highlight the selection and JAWS does not see that. Perfect, thanks so much! A bit hidden away. I am guessing that the dictionary settings are in there somewhere as well. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: 13 May 2015 17:16 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Hello Steven, To change the default location for user templates do the following: 1. Press Alt+F. 2. Open Word options. In Word 2013 Alt+T is used so I think it is the same for 2010. 3. Arrow down the list of categories to Advanced or press A until you get there. 4. Use shift with tab several times and you will find the File Location button. Press spacebar on it. 5. In the list of the types of files arrow down to user templates if you want to change location for those templates. 6. Tab to the Modify button and use spacebar. 7. Use the tree and list views to browse to where you want to have these types of files saved to automatically. 8. Use OK or whatever the accepting button is until you are out of the dialog boxes. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about NVDA and JAWS.
Hi, You wouldn't really want to run both at the same time but you can switch between the two screen readers with no problem. NVDA doesn't make any changes to the video driver chain. It will be up to you to decide on which one you want to load up on the startup screen and then after logon etc. In the past, I have configured my laptop to have NVDA load up at the logon screen and then JAWS after logging on to the machine. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Carolyn Arnold Sent: 13 May 2015 16:40 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question about NVDA and JAWS. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010
Thanks Mike, I was trying to find out how to change the default locations as well so I could move the templates on to a network share. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Michael B. Sent: 13 May 2015 15:34 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Hi Steven, The steps below are for Word 2013 but, should work for Word 2010 as well.: Before creating a new Normal template you should first make a backup of your normal.dotm template. 1. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will asume you know how to do that. 2. Close Word. 3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates. Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm. Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically create a new Normal.dotm template when you open Word. 4. Open Word. 5. Start a new blank document however you do that. 6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number styles, font, etc. 7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as you set up the things you want files to be based on. 8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As. 9. In the filename box, type, Normal. 10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want. 11. You can tab to the, Save button, & press enter or, just press, Alt + S, then press, Alt + F4, to close the document & the new Normal.dotm should be saved wherever your default save to is located, which is usually the Documents folder. Now find the newly created file & put it into the Templates folder located here: C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates. You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every new document. Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file, just go back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm back to Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have and let Word rebuild one from its default settings. For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can also have Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if you want to save changes to the template. That's typically if you create macros, etc. That setting is under the Save options Take care.
