A bit more info.

Using the NVDA screenreader, you can display books as a list in the Kindle
for PC app. They will be in a table, and you will need to tab around a bit
to find them. When you highlight a book, press alt for the file menu. That's
where the download option is. Note that you also have to choose the PC app
as your Send to source in the Kindle store.

Good luck.

Hello Prateek

I'm sorry if I can't be very specific with this. I was able to do it, but it
took a lot of fiddling. But maybe I can recount enough that it will be
helpful.

The Kindle for PC program is very difficult as you know. Jaws is useless
with it. I was able to do more with it using NVDA, so switch to that
screenreader. I did a lot of exploring of the menus with NVDA and was able
to find both a download and open book choice on the menus. Although I
couldn't read any of the book in the Kindle app, perhaps activating those
choices was helpful. Even after downloading, I have no idea where the book
went. It wasn't listed in the My Kindle Content folder.

I then went into the conversion program you are also using. I couldn't
locate the folder or file anywhere, but ended up choosing to convert
everything in the default My Kindle Content folder anyway. When I looked in
the . eBooks folder where conversion results go, my book was there along
with the free ones for Treasure Island, etc.

Using NVDA, it appears that you can also remove the Kindle version from your
library. I didn't try that.

Hope this at least gets you started.

Jean

David f,

Was that the case straight out the gate? When I purchased my Lenovo laptop,
my sighted neighbor had to disable the function keys in the bios, then jaws
and it's function keys work. The regular performance of the function keys
before being disabled still worked though, I just had to add the fn key to
them. For example, f1 turns down the volume, but now I just do fn f1.

Along a similar line of inquiry, from time to time, people have brought up
issues they've had with laptops and the function keys not working properly.
There have been discussions on how to adjust this behavior and the degree to
how accessible if at all this is as it sometimes involves monkeying around
with the bios and more in dept tinkering.
Outside of targeting certain specs that one wishes to have, I.E. processor,
hard drive capacity, ram, etc. how can one identify problematic models that
may present this function key issue and thus stay away from them and all the
headaches with trying to figure out how to fix it or return an open and used

2 GB recommended (32-bit)

Hi Brian I tried all of that but word would not recognize the Greek, after
some lengthy research on the internet and a call to Microsoft accessibility
it turns out that the file I have to run is proofing tools_el-gr_86.exe.
It does work now however it's not the greatest spell check. I think I'm
going to invest in getting a whole language pack I think it's 24 bucks, and
that isn't to bad. The language pack I have for 2010 works much better then
this free tool they offer. Thanks for trying to help.

Hello Zoe,

In Word 2013 you can set the default proofing language. Use Alt key
followed by R to get to the review tab of the ribbon. Tab to Language
submenu and press enter key. Set Proofing Language is one of the two items
in this submenu. Choose the Set Proofing Language. In the dialog box that
appears there is a checkbox for detecting language automatically and a Set
as Default button. Make sure that English United States is selected in the
list of languages before using the Set as Default button.

I don't have the earlier messages in this thread, so hopefully, this is what
you are needing.

Take care.

I did as you said and installed the language proofing tools el-gr-64.exe It
told me to accept the licence I checked the box clicked continue and it told
me I'm all most there I need to restart word. I did this but it doesn't
work.
I purposely typed in Greek miss spelled words.
I click f7 and word tells me the spelling and grammer is complete you are
good to go. The only option it gives me is ok.
Any ideas? Is there maybe some setting I have to change in word?

there would have been a combo box,

if you would have,

I would think you should install the 64bit,

My wife is very sick, and she had to go into the hospital. She is home now,

sick. I will record the tutorial this coming Wednesday (March 16), and I

the tutorial I have already sent to a lot of you, was recorded by someone
else and the tutorial and the quality of the recording is not that good. I

Jean

Jean

2016-03-14 Thread David Moore

Hi all,
I am very sorry that I have not had the time to record my WLM tutorial yet.
My wife is very sick, and she had to go into the hospital. She is home now,
but we are still catching up on what we could not get done while she was
sick. I will record the tutorial this coming Wednesday (March 16), and I
will send it to David that day. Thank you for being so patient. Note that
the tutorial I have already sent to a lot of you, was recorded by someone
else and the tutorial and the quality of the recording is not that good. I
was just giving you that to help you get you started until I record my
tutorial and you get it. I will go over everything that you would ever want
to do in Windows Live Mail, including importing different accounts into it.
Take care, and have a great one.

has not had the time to create it as of yet since I have not heard from him

2010 language pack. Even though this is office 2013 would I be able to
install the 2010 language pack?
p.s. How funny is it that I got kicked off Jim's list and a week later I
found the cd for office 2010. Oh well everything happends for a reason.
Second p.s. thank you to all for your great help and support.

2016-03-14 Thread zoe fiogkos
I did as you said and installed the language proofing tools el-gr-64.exe
It told me to accept the licence I checked the box clicked continue and it
told me I'm all most there I need to restart word. I did this but it
doesn't work.
I purposely typed in Greek miss spelled words.
I click f7 and word tells me the spelling and grammer is complete you are
good to go. The only option it gives me is ok.
Any ideas? Is there maybe some setting I have to change in word?

Re: [JAWS-Users] a link I got from a post from a member on this list
Hi Anna,

Here's the article:

If you don't want Windows 10, do this!
By
Martin Brinkmann

Windows
 - Last Update: 2016-03-13T11:04:37+0100

Reports are coming in
by users from around the world on sites like Reddit that machines running
Windows 7 or Windows 8 have been updated -- once again -- to Windows 10
automatically.

They report that the update was automated, and that they did not receive
any

prompt or option to stop the process once it was in motion.

Some noticed that their machines were upgraded to the new operating system
after coming back from lunch or checking their computer in the morning after
leaving it turned on for the night.

This is not the first time that this happened to some users running Windows
7 or 8 on their machines. Users were experiencing the same thing in October
2015 and
Microsoft apologized later on
stating that the enforcement was not intended to be delivered
automatically.

But the issue
did not keep Microsoft from pushing Windows 10
related updates to machines running previous versions of Windows, and the
company stated openly that
it is "going to keep at it"
even though it may be discomforting to some customers.

In February 2016 then it made
Windows 10 a recommended update on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

If you don't want Windows 10, do this

The following steps are recommended to anyone who does not want to upgrade
computer systems running Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10.

Step 1: Disable automatic updates

Automatic updates are convenient, as Windows will download and install
critical system updates automatically.

The main issue with the setting is that you don't get any say in the matter
and no option to research updates before they are installed.

Windows updates may have adverse effects on a system. We have seen in the
past that they may cause all kinds of issues on a system including
preventing
it to boot or upgrading it to Windows 10.

So, instead of having the system set to install updates automatically, you
configure it to inform you about new updates so that you can decide whether
to install them or not.

Here is how that is done (the screenshots have been taken on a Windows 7
machine, but the methodology is the same on Windows 8).

Step 1: Tap on the Windows-key, type Windows Update, and hit enter.

windows update

Step 2: Click on "change settings" when the Windows Update Control Panel
opens up.

windows update change settings

Step 3: Locate the "important updates" menu on the page that opens and
click

on it. Switch from "install updates automatically" to "check for updates but
let me choose whether to download and install them". Click on ok afterwards.

windows manual updates

Windows will notify you about updates but won't download or install them
automatically anymore.

This requires that you go through the list of updates manually whenever
they

are presented to you to select those you want installed.

You can use the
built-in hide functionality
to block the installation of updates you don't want installed on your
machine.

Additionally, you may want to do the following to improve the blocking
further.

list of 2 items
1. Set the preferences
DisableOSUpgrade and DisableGWX in the Registry
to block the upgrade to Windows 10. Click on the link for instructions on
how to do that.
2. Install the excellent GWX Control Panel application
which has been designed to block Windows 10 on machines running Windows 7
or 8.

When David sends it to me I will post it on the server. I must conclude he
has not had the time to create it as of yet since I have not heard from him
directly. So in short you all will have access to it shortly after I get it

I've always chosen my updates from the important updates list but that
did not prevent Microsoft from placing its nasty little Get Windows 10

I realize that any new laptop will have Windows 10 as its operating

operating system.

My question is this:

What should I be looking for in a laptop? I found the following
system requirements on the Freedom Scientific web site, but wonder
whether those are absolute minimum requirements:

Summary: Software and hardware specifications for JAWS

table with 2 columns and 7 rows

Description

Specification

JAWS Home Use Edition and JAWS Professional

WindowsR 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows ServerR
2012, and Windows Server 2008

Processor speed

Minimum 1.5 GHz processor

Memory (RAM)

4 GB recommended (64-bit)

2 GB recommended (32-bit)

Required hard disk space

20 MB to 690 MB required per voice for installing Vocalizer
Expressive, Vocalizer Direct, or RealSpeak Solo Direct voices (file
sizes will vary depending on the voice installed)

Video

A display adapter capable of at least 800 x 600 screen resolution
with 16-bit color (1024 x 768 screen resolution with 32-bit color
recommended)

Sound

Windows compatible sound card (for speech)

table end

Any specific recommendations would be appreciated.

Are there certain brands of laptops I should stay away from? Right
now, I'm thinking of either an HP or a Dell.

[JAWS-Users] language packs for office 2013

So on Friday I purchased my office 2013.
I tried to go to the office.com to get the free add ons for proofing tools
in another language but no luck.
Any ideas how maybe I could do it through the settings in Microsoft word?
I did find my old cd for 2010 and a long with that a thumb drive of an old
2010 language pack. Even though this is office 2013 would I be able to
install the 2010 language pack?
p.s. How funny is it that I got kicked off Jim's list and a week later I
found the cd for office 2010. Oh well everything happends for a reason.
Second p.s. thank you to all for your great help and support.

It seems that you have the keyboard set to another language by default. The
Alt-Shift is used to switch the keyboard from one language to another; in my
case, the default language is English, but I also have Spanish installed and
when I press Shift-Alt it toggles to Spanish and back to English.

I suggest you go to the Control Panel, to Clock, language and Region and see
if you can make English your default language and keyboard.

Everytime I want to type something, an email message, something in a word

when I type the apostrophy jaws says e grav.
If I click control shift jaws says setting layout to US. How can I make this
setting stick in jaws so I don't have to change it everytime I start
typing.?
Even the question mark says e acute, until I click the above key sequence
and then I get the question mark.
Please help,

Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard layout when typing

2016-03-14 Thread Humberto Rodriguez
It seems that you have the keyboard set to another language by default. The
Alt-Shift is used to switch the keyboard from one language to another; in my
case, the default language is English, but I also have Spanish installed and
when I press Shift-Alt it toggles to Spanish and back to English.

I suggest you go to the Control Panel, to Clock, language and Region and see
if you can make English your default language and keyboard.

[JAWS-Users] How to download kindle book on PC's hard drive using JAWS

2016-03-14 Thread Dujari, Prateek
Hello gang.
How do I get a purchased kindle book to actually download on my computer's hard
drive?? ,
Using Win8.1, Latest JFW17. I installed and logged on to Amazon's 'Kindle for
PC' program on my Win8.1 windows computer. I'm successfully logged on to my
amazon account each time I open the "kindle for PC' program. I bought a kindle
book using my web browser at amazon.com and clicked the 'deliver to kindle for
PC' button. ON my computer opening the 'kindle for PC' program, I can see the
purchased book listed there. I just can't find it on my PC's hard drive which
suggests that the 'kindle for PC' program on my computer is accessing the book
and its contents from the cloud and not my PC's hard drive. I can open and
read the book within the 'kindle for PC' program. I however need it on my PC's
hard drive so I can use AN ACCESSIBLE LEGAL SOFTWARE CALED the CALLED 'CODEX'
TO CONVERT THE KNIDLE FORMAT TO ANOTHER TO ALLOW me to read it on my BookSense
Xt.I can also see that installing the 'kindle for PC' and logging on to my
amazon account through this program on my computer put the kind
le book 'Treasure Island' for free on my PC's hard drive and I'm able to
locate the files for this kindle book on the hard drive. I can also see
Treasure Island right below the book I purchased in the list in the kindle for
PC program. Just can't find the purchased book anywhere on the hard drive
despite doing a search.

Hi, my first recommendation is to stay away from HP. yes, Del is a top brand
along with Asus and Lenovo but finally when selecting a laptop it's up to
you.

On 3/13/2016 10:09 AM, Tom Behler wrote:

Hello, all.

I'm getting ready to purchase a new laptop computer, and want to be
sure I get one that is adequate for Jaws. I currently use Jaws 16,
and my SMA covers Jaws 17. So I will likely put Jaws 17 on the new

computer.

I realize that any new laptop will have Windows 10 as its operating
system, and am prepared to begin learning to use Jaws with that new
operating system.

My question is this:

What should I be looking for in a laptop? I found the following
system requirements on the Freedom Scientific web site, but wonder
whether those are absolute minimum requirements:

Summary: Software and hardware specifications for JAWS

table with 2 columns and 7 rows

Description

Specification

JAWS Home Use Edition and JAWS Professional

WindowsR 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows ServerR
2012, and Windows Server 2008

Processor speed

Minimum 1.5 GHz processor

Memory (RAM)

4 GB recommended (64-bit)

2 GB recommended (32-bit)

Required hard disk space

20 MB to 690 MB required per voice for installing Vocalizer
Expressive, Vocalizer Direct, or RealSpeak Solo Direct voices (file
sizes will vary depending on the voice installed)

Video

A display adapter capable of at least 800 x 600 screen resolution with
16-bit color (1024 x 768 screen resolution with 32-bit color
recommended)

Sound

Windows compatible sound card (for speech)

table end

Any specific recommendations would be appreciated.

Are there certain brands of laptops I should stay away from? Right
now, I'm thinking of either an HP or a Dell.

Which among these is the best choice? Hoping to hear from you soon

Re: [JAWS-Users] incoming email sound help?

2016-03-14 Thread Mario
Zoe, Mike, and anyone else, as I understand that feature for the top and
bottom edge indicator is a feature that is hard coded in the particular
program being used. so, the problem is not that JAWS's settings don't
work for this feature it's that the manufacturer of the program disabled
this feature from being changed even though JAWS's feature is set to
silent. I bet if this setting in JAWS is set to notify with sound, two
indicators would be heard. there is a tech support document explaining
this.

Hi Zoe,

If you're in Word or Outlook try opening Jaws quick settings with the
keystroke, Insert / Jaws key + V, arrow down to, Top & Bottom Edge, press
the spacebar so Jaws reports, Silent, tab to the Okay button, & press enter.

Take care.

Hi David & Zoe,

Since I don't run Windows 10, this is a question out of curiosity. Since
Jaws is Jaws no matter which operating system, can't the, Top & Bottom Edge,

sound option be turned On / Off in Jaws' Quick Settings, Insert / Jaws key +

V, under the General heading? I haven't followed this whole thread, so I
could be way off topic.
Take care.

hello Zoe;

the sound your hearing when you up or down arrow within empty word document,
top and bottom of inbox,
is the top and bottom edge,
by default the sound is turned on,
you can turn this off,

if you wish to change a sound event notification you can do the following;

1, desktop,
windows+i=windows settings,

2, now right-arrow until you hear, personalization,
press enter,

3, now press the down-arrow until you hear themes,
press enter,

4, now use the tab key until you hear,
Advanced sound settings link,
press enter
5, you're now into the windows sounds page dialog,
tab 3 times to the listview,
now you can use the down-arrow key to find a specific sound, example, "email
notification,

next, tab twice, here you'll find a list of possible list of sounds you can
choose from,
once making a choice,
you can now tab to test button, and press the spacebar,
if you're happy with the choice, you can tab to the apply button,
press enter.

I'm using Windows 7 and JAWS 16 and when I press enter to go into a program or

Along a similar line of inquiry, from time to time, people have brought up
issues they've had with laptops and the function keys not working properly.
There have been discussions on how to adjust this behavior and the degree to
how accessible if at all this is as it sometimes involves monkeying around
with the bios and more in dept tinkering.
Outside of targeting certain specs that one wishes to have, I.E. processor,
hard drive capacity, ram, etc. how can one identify problematic models that
may present this function key issue and thus stay away from them and all the
headaches with trying to figure out how to fix it or return an open and used
item?
Is it really just hit and miss?

I have a couple of Systemax towers and am quite pleased with them. I do have
a Dell lap top that my niece gave me because she said it didn't work. It has
XP on it but I only use it for music. I bring it up because it does run hot
so I got a cooling pad for it right away and that has kept the evil spirits
away for a number of years already.

I've never heard of Systemax computers, so this may be worth looking into.

Just to toss my thoughts in to the mix, personally I get good performance
from Systemax computers. Also Lenovo makes a good lap top as well.

Computer brand is no different from cars. I personally get the best

I don't know about tutorials specifically for Windows 7 as I bypassed

and although it is similar to the original Outlook Express it is a a bit
