Hi Kevin,

You're correct, press, Control + spacebar, on a highlighted area of the
Desktop & you'll hear Jaws report not selected. Now, you have a blank area
selected, so to speak.

you don't need two sound cards.
if your speaker settings are in your sys tray open the context menu and arrow
to sound mixer. there you can
adjust just the jaws volume. but be careful. if you turn it off you would have
to use narrator or n v d a to go back to the mixer to turn the speech back on.

Re: [JAWS-Users] controlling only jaws volume

2017-08-14 Thread Rick Ely
Evening,
I am running Windows 10 Creators and JAWS 18. I quickly tried this and it
worked here.

In the system tray go to speakers and use the context key to open the menu
of choices
Select Volume mixer
Note Simply pressing enter will get you volume mixer, however activating it
with the enter key will not show sliders for JAWS or system sounds.
When opened, you can tab between the sliders as you might move your hands on
a physical mixing board.
The first slider is labeled Speaker volume and JAWS focus will be on the
title of that slider.
Tab again and Jaws says Up, Down slider and speaks the percentage of volume
as it is currently set. NOTE focus on all other sliders will announce the
item that the slider will adjust. For example "Up Down slider for system
sounds ".
The up and down arrow keys will adjust the slider and JAWS speaks the
percentage of volume.
Tab again and you will land on the Mute button for that item. For example,
Mute System sounds. Spacebar toggles between mute and unmute
There should be a separate slider for system sounds and for JAWS . If other
audio features are enabled you will find sliders for these as well.
Escape leaves the Mixer but setting are automatically save.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Pronunciation dictionary

2017-08-14 Thread Flor Lynch
It sounds to me as if much depends on the particular synthesizer one's
using, so I'm not even sure they should be calling it the JAWS Dictionery!
Also, capitalising syllables helps at times, spaces not always necessary in
words. There's a county Kildare (but, using Eloquence, that should be
pronounced KilDare), in Ireland. One synth I used makes a bad job of BBC
when used with JAWS, nearly always emphasizing the second syllable. So then
I had to change it to BBbe Sea. - (Actually, with that synth, Bebe Sea) for
more comfortable listening.

A two-part answer.

First, I just plugged "du luth" into the replacement field of my JAWS
dictionary, and it pronounced the city's name correctly, at least for my
synthesizer.

Second, I've found no consistency in how the JAWS dictionary processes the
emphasis of syllables. Finding a solution in each case depends on trial and
error and experience. Even then, sometimes I can find no good solution.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Pronunciation dictionary

2017-08-14 Thread Fernando Gregoire
In Spanish I do this by accentuating the vowel on the syllable that must be
pronounced with a stronger tone. In Spanish this always works, because Spanish
general accentuation rules are strict and well defined.
In English this would seem harder because there are no accented vowels
natively, but perhaps Eloquence might recognize the acute accent used in
Spanish. Although English keyboard layouts have no key for the acute accent,
you can switch to the US International keyboard layout (press ALT+SHIFT until
JAWS says US International, except if you have removed this layout from your
Windows regional and Language Options in Control Panel or the Windows 10
Settings app, but by default English Windows installations include this layout
available to use) and easily insert the accented vowel you want by pressing
AltGr+vowel. AltGr is the ALT key to the right of the SPACEBAR; in US layout
this is identical to the left ALT key, but in most other keyboard layouts this
key allows inserting special characters.

Hope you can find a suitable dictionary rule!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Trying to get firefox to download a form and feeling bemused

2017-08-14 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi!
Since some versions ago, Firefox includes its own PDF viewer by default despite
the possibility of using the Adobe's one if you want. As a result, when you
open a PDF, you have to press the Download button to download it; this button
is in the viewer's page, so you can quickly find it by pressing the JAWS quick
key navigation b (for button); if the Download button does not appear,
sometimes it is necessary to press the Tools button first.

I prefer, however, to view the download dialog when activating a PDF link
instead of a previous viewer. To do this in Firefox press ALT+T to open the
Tools menu, select Options, and in the first list box choose Applications. Tab
to the search box and type PDF, then press ENTER and tab to the result list.
When you find the mimetype for PDF files, press TAB once more to go to a combo
box where you can choose the Ask Me Always option and press ENTER. Exact
options names may vary, because even in English Firefox is available in
multiple variants (U.S., British, South African and perhaps Australian).

Hope it helps!

Hello folks.

I'm usually pretty good at this stuff, but I'm stumped for the moment and maybe
someone here could offer a suggestion. I'm trying to download a direct deposit
form from my bank. This is a pdf file. I mostly just need some of the info from
the form and may not actually be filling it out online. At any rate, I am using
Firefox, JAWS 18 and Windows 10. When I click on the link to the form, it is
supposed to open a pDF in the Adobe viewer, perhaps in its own window. JAWS
reads a message that Firefox has blocked the website from opening a popup
window, and I hear it say "alt-o for options", and also "click to close this
message". Obviously, I want the file to open. I've come across dialogues like
this before, such as the standard file download one, and don't generally have a
problem with them. However, here, pressing alt-o doesn't seem to do a damn
thing. I can't re-click the link at all; if I try doing it again, I don't think
that initial alert even pops up . not until I re-log-in to the bank site. I've
tried saving the link to my drive, but it's just an html file that probably
generates a part of the pdf content, and I can't access it this way. Any ideas?
Why am I not able to interact properly
with this dialogue box?

Ted,

You're right that "n" will do a lot of the heavy lifting. This quick key
skips over links to the next block of non-link text. I'd add the letter h
for heading to your arsenal. I find that a combination of h and n gets me to
the beginning, or nearby the beginning, of most articles.

If I can add just one more set of quick keys, JAWS recognizes headings by
level number, such as heading 1, heading 2, etc. You can get right to
heading 1 by pressing 1 on the number row above the letter.

To illustrate, when I go to read an article in the New York Times, I first
press 1, which takes me to the title. Then I know from experience to press n
until I hear the word "Skip." Here, I press n one more time. After that,
it's a question of going by paragraph once or twice to the start of the
text.

How do you move paragraph by paragraph? With control-down arrow.

Every website is different, but more and more, I'm finding a combination of
1, n and control-down arrow works pretty well.

form, it is supposed to open a pDF in the Adobe viewer, perhaps in its own
window. JAWS reads a message that Firefox has blocked the website from opening
a popup window, and I hear it say "alt-o for options", and also "click to
close this message". Obviously, I want the file to open. I've come across
dialogues like this before, such as the standard file download one, and don't
generally have a problem with them. However, here, pressing alt-o doesn't seem
to do a damn thing. I can't re-click the link at all; if I try doing it again,
I don't think that initial alert even pops up . not until I re-log-in to the
bank site. I've tried saving the link to my drive, but it's just an html file
that probably generates a part of the pdf content, and I can't access it this
way. Any ideas? Why am I not able to interact properly
with this dialogue box?

Re: [JAWS-Users] is there a quick navigation command to jump to non-control text?

2017-08-14 Thread Adrian Spratt
Ted,

You're right that "n" will do a lot of the heavy lifting. This quick key skips
over links to the next block of non-link text. I'd add the letter h for heading
to your arsenal. I find that a combination of h and n gets me to the beginning,
or nearby the beginning, of most articles.

If I can add just one more set of quick keys, JAWS recognizes headings by level
number, such as heading 1, heading 2, etc. You can get right to heading 1 by
pressing 1 on the number row above the letter.

To illustrate, when I go to read an article in the New York Times, I first
press 1, which takes me to the title. Then I know from experience to press n
until I hear the word "Skip." Here, I press n one more time. After that, it's a
question of going by paragraph once or twice to the start of the text.

How do you move paragraph by paragraph? With control-down arrow.

Every website is different, but more and more, I'm finding a combination of 1,
n and control-down arrow works pretty well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Pronunciation dictionary

2017-08-14 Thread Adrian Spratt
A two-part answer.

First, I just plugged "du luth" into the replacement field of my JAWS
dictionary, and it pronounced the city's name correctly, at least for my
synthesizer.

Second, I've found no consistency in how the JAWS dictionary processes the
emphasis of syllables. Finding a solution in each case depends on trial and
error and experience. Even then, sometimes I can find no good solution.

However, here, pressing alt-o doesn't seem to do a damn
thing. I can't re-click the link at all; if I try doing it again, I don't think
that initial alert even pops up . not until I re-log-in to the
bank site. I've tried saving the link to my drive, but it's just an html file
that probably generates a part of the pdf content, and I can't access it this
way. Any ideas? Why am I not able to interact properly
with this dialogue box?

Hi Jeff. To accentuate a syllable, insert a dash or space before the syllable
you want accentuated, which should work most of the time. Depending on the
desired vowel sound, I've also had success with double vowels on the syllable I

Re: [JAWS-Users] Word 2010, sort and JAWS

2017-08-14 Thread Adrian Spratt
Good morning, Brian.

Thank you for giving my question more thought. Unfortunately, I didn't use a
distinct format for the labels I assigned my document's entries. In the future,
with your suggestion in mind, I will make sure I do. For now, the only solution
I can imagine would involve a search and replace, but I can't imagine a
character that would create a heading in the "replace" field.
Again, thank you for your efforts to help this time and for the many other
expert posts of yours that I've saved.

Hello Adrian,

I don't remember if Word 10 has the option to select all text with similar
formatting but if so there is another approach you can take. This is assuming
(which I know shouldn't be done) that the section headings have a different
formatting applied than other text in the document. In Word 2013 here is what
I would do:

Select one of the section heading's text.
Use the selection button located under the home tab and at the right end of the
lower part of the ribbon.
In the submenu choose "text with similar formatting (no data)."
Use the hotkey to change all selected text to a particular heading such as CTRL
with Alt 1, CTRL with Alt and 2, etc.

If Word 10 has the selection button and the section headings are formatted
differently than other text in the document then this is likely the quickest
way to apply the style you want to the original section headings. You could
then sort by the applied Word headings to hopefully get the result you want.

Take care.

Brian,

Well, I didn't wait. Creating a heading looks almost too easy. Keeping in mind
your point that for my dictionary-like organization to work, I should use only
one heading level, I'm going with the obvious, control-alt-number row 1. I
thought I'd need to select existing lines of text, but it seems I just have to
position the cursor at the beginning of the line (or anywhere on the line?) for
it to take effect.

I could also initiate a heading by typing that key combo and proceeding with
the heading text, but most are already in place.

It will be a fair amount of clerical work, but now I can see my way forward.

One thought. each of my would-be headings is preceded by a double return.
Can you think of a search and replace operation that might accomplish what I
want? Presumably, it would consist of ^6^6 in both fields, with an additional
character in the replace field. Please don't waste your time if you don't have
a quick answer.

If you have anything else to add or correct, please let me know.

Again, thank you.

Brian,

I had a feeling you'd come up with something. Thank you so much. But now I have
to admit I've never created what you call built-in headings in Word.
Would it be a lot of trouble to explain? In the meantime, I'll turn to Google
tomorrow.

Hello Adrian,

If the subject heading for each entry is a built-in Word heading and all
headings are of the same level then you can sort by heading in either ascending
or descending order. Go under the home tab and use the Sort button in the
paragraph group to bring up the dialog box. Use down arrow in the "Sort by"
edit combo box and choose heading. Tab a couple times to the radio buttons and
choose between ascending and descending. Use OK. Of course, this approach
only works if your subject headings are built-in Word headings and are all
using the same heading level.

Take care.

JAWS sleep settings are the same no matter what version of windows is being
used. Now having said that they normally go into effect when a program is
loaded and turn off when the program is exited. There is not normally any
delay at all. For example open book puts jaws to sleep right away without a
delay at all.

Hi Adrian & Ted,

For whatever reason I didn't catch the original post, but this almost sounds
like a Jaws sleep setting. I say that because Jaws works just fine in
Openbook, but no other programs. I have no idea how sleep settings would be
configured in Widows 10, so a call to FS / VFO as Adrian suggested would get
you your best answer.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Ted, I see no one responded, which means everyone is as clueless as I on
this one. Probably the best thing is to call FS/VFO tech support in the
morning. This shouldn't happen, as if you need to be told. A JAWS repair
might solve it, but it sounds like something more is going on. If you need
repair instructions, please post again.

Dear List:

I recently migrated from Window-eyes to the latest version of Jaws. I have
a windows ten computer. No matter what application I am in, with the
exception of Open Book, Jaws will start to nod off after fifteen seconds
from when I last pressed a key. Thus, if I wait for fifteen seconds before
pressing a key, Jaws takes a half second to respond. If I type the letter
w, for example, I will only hear the final syllable. I tried using the
Eloquence, Realspeak, and the sapi voices and different persons within them
to see if the problem would go away. So, what next should I try? Thanks
for any ideas. Regards: Ted Larson

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using a G-Mail Account

2017-08-14 Thread Dave Basden
Forward the messages to your primary account and delete them from
GMail. I do that. There are settings for that in the GMail control panel.

At 02:12 PM 8/13/2017, you wrote:

Hello All,

Does anyone have any tips on how to navigate and use the web version of
G-mail? I need to either have a draft message that I can use to send out to
new contacts, or be able to forward the original message and edit out the
FWD from the subject line and the old header info in the body of the
message. I will be sending out over 150 of these messages as I receive
contact info. If I have multiple to send out at once, I plan to put all of
the addresses in the BCC line. I do use Outlook 2010 for my personal
e-mail, so is there a way to access this other account with Outlook and not
have the messages get mixed together?

Thanks,

Annette
