Re: [JAWS-Users] Best source to learn about Google Drive
Hi Melissa, Check out the tutorial below: http://www.tsbvi.edu/google-drive-jaws Google Drive with JAWS By John Rose The following step-by-step guide offers an introduction to the key components of Google Drive for JAWS users. This guide presumes that the JAWS keyboard is set for laptop mode, so the JAWS command key is Caps Lock. If the JAWS keyboard is set for desktop mode, the JAWS command key is Insert. Getting Started: list of 5 items . Open Mozilla Firefox web browser . Go to the address bar: Alt + D or Ctrl + L . If a message box appears, type Alt + M to close message box. . Type " drive.google.com" then press Enter . Toggle JAWS virtual cursor off: Press Caps Lock + Z until you hear "Use virtual PC cursor off" list end Navigation Panel: list of 3 items . Move computer focus to the navigation panel: Press the "g" key, then the "n" key . Navigate the panel: Use the up and down arrows to select from My Drive, Shared With Me, Recent, Starred, or Trash . Press enter on the selection (My Drive, Incoming, etc.) list end File List: list of 3 items . Go to the list of files: Press the "g" key, then the "L" key . The "v" key toggles between grid and list views. . Use up or down arrows to navigate files list end Actions Menu: list of 1 items . Press the "a" key to opens the actions menu. The actions menu is an easy way to access almost all the tasks that need to be done with a file or folder. The menu includes: preview, open with (submenu), share (dialog box), get link (dialog box), move to (dialog box), add star, rename (dialog box), manage versions (dialog box), make a copy, download, and remove. list end The next step that I would recommend is to perform some of the actions and navigate some of the dialog boxes. Adding a star: list of 6 items . Select a file. Press "a" to open the Actions menu. . Navigate using down arrow to "Add star." Press Enter. . Press "g", then "n" to go to the navigation pane. . Navigate using down arrow to "Starred". Press Enter. . Press "g", then "L" to go to the list of files. . Press down arrow to ensure that the file you starred is in the list. list end Moving a file to a new folder: list of 7 items . Select a file. Press "a" to open the Actions menu. . Navigate using down arrow to "Move to..." Press Enter. . A dialog box opens. Navigate the dialog box using Tab (forward) and Shift+Tab (backward). Navigate forward using Tab to "Create Folder" . Press Spacebar to activate the button . Type the name of the folder (e.g. "Homework"). Press Enter. . The focus should be on the "Move" button, but you can use Tab then Shift+Tab to make sure. When the focus is on the "Move" button, press Spacebar. . Note: If the file is in a shared folder, it will be removed from the shared folder and put in the newly created folder. The people with whom the document is shared will no longer be able to see the document. list end Searching for a file or folder: list of 4 items . Press the forward slash key (/) to go to the Search edit box. . Type the search term and press Enter. . The computer focus will be on the list of files and folders that match your search terms. Use the arrow keys to browse through the list. . You can use the Actions key (a) or press Enter to open the file or folder. list end Sorting files and folder: list of 4 items . This task gives you the ability to change how files are sorted, giving you different ways to navigate them. . Press the Sort key (r). . Use the down or up arrow keys to move through the menu. To determine how files are sorted, listen for "checked" or "not checked" as you navigate through the following options: list of 4 items nesting level 1 . Last modified . Last edited by me . Last opened by me . Name list end nesting level 1 . Press "Enter" to select an option from the list. Your focus returns to the files and folders list for navigation. list end Sharing a file or folder: list of 13 items . Locate and ensure computer focus is on the selected file or folder. . Press "a" to open the Actions menu. . Press the down arrow until you hear "Share.". . Press Enter to open the "Share with others" dialog box. . The computer focus should be in the text edit box where you type the email address of the person to whom you want to send the file. It may benefit new users to press Tab to navigate the dialog box until JAWS reads "Enter names or email addresses. edit type in text". . Type in the email address of the person with whom you wish to share the file. Press Tab. . Type the next email address, if you wish to share the file or folder with more than one person. Press Tab. . Indicate the access level for the people with whom you are sharing the file or folder. Press Spacebar, then use the Up or Down Arrow keys to select either "Can edit," "Can comment," or "Can view." Press Enter when you have selected one of the three choices. Then, press Tab. . You are given the option of adding a note to the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 question
That's a very interesting post, Joseph. Thanks for this. I like how you call it the windows 10 "ecosystem". It seems appropriate. It's a little unsettling perhaps that, due to the nature of the beast, stability is not really something we should even expect. I guess this is the sort of thing we are just supposed to expect now, with Windows being a contuininng work in progress always and forever more. It doesn't seem wrong that we should, at the very least, expect things to simply work efficiently and smoothly. I understand what you mean about the foundation of support here, but most users wouldn't really have the time or inclination (I think) to spend effort trying to use something that doesn't seem to work as efficiently as other products. I guess as you say the onus is on MS and VFO -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Joseph Lee Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2017 3:47 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 question Hi, Ever since Windows 10 Version 1507 (build 10240) hit the air in July 2015 (or shortly before), I did tell people why supporting Edge early is crucial: some universal apps will use Edge rendering engine to display web content, including (as some found out the hard way) Windows Store. Sometimes it is best to wait for things to settle, but there are times when at least some kind of a foundation should be laid to provide support for a technology later. I and others had a heated debate on a Windows 10 forum in July this year regarding this matter, with the question of who is to blame the most taking the center stage. In the end, both MS and VFO are to blame: Microsoft, for not communicating clearly as to how screen readers could achieve what they want, and VFO, for insisting for stability. I've been preaching this for the last two to three years and will continue to say the following as long as Windows 10 ecosystem lives: in Windows 10 ecosystem, praying for stability will get us NOWHERE. In regards to Edge and JAWS, there is a showstopper bug I'm following: as of latest preview build for Fall Creators Update, no screen reader (including Narrator itself) will announce notifications, partly caused by under the hood API changes that might be responsible for suppressing a UIA event from firing. If JAWS is supposed to rely on this, then this will create a situation where Edge support is there but important bits won't work right away. Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers.
Brian, thank you, I've never seen this before. Justin -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2017 10:13 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers. Hello, JAWS has a method for naming columns and/or rows but using the Excel Naming Manager is what is now recommended. Here are the steps: 1. You first need to move the keyboard focus to the row containing the column headers. Use CTRL with G to launch the Go To dialog box. Type in the cell address, for example A13 if the column titles are on row 13 and start with column A. Press enter key to move to that position in the worksheet. 2. Use CTRL+3. You can alternatively use Alt+M followed by the letter "N." If using a mouse click on the Formula tab on the top part of the ribbon and then click on "Name Manager." 3. Click on the New button or press spacebar on the New button. If using the keyboard you might need to tab to the New button before pressing spacebar. 4. Type the following changing the cell addresses as required: ColumnTitle.a13..h13 There should be no spaces in what you type in this box. Capitalize the word column and the word title but do not leave spaces. The first period is for the beginning of the range of cells containing the column headings. The two periods together show the last cell in the range. If your column titles were on row 5 and went from column B to column F then you would type: ColumnTitle.b5..F5 5. Either click the OK button or use tab key until you find OK and press spacebar. 6. Either click the Close button or tab until you find the Close button and press spacebar. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers.
You can also use insert control alt r, or insert control alt c to set column and row headers. I haven't followed this thread, but that is what I do, unless I'm referring to something different. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2017 10:28 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] excel reading headers. Hello again, I should have mentioned that if you want to hear row titles then you use RowTitle instead of ColumnTitle. If you want both row and column titles you would use Title instead of ColumnTitle or RowTitle. There should be no spaces in the name, the beginning of the range is preceded by one period and the end of the range is preceded by two periods. For example, RowTitle.a5..a20 Will let you hear row titles in that range of cells. Using just the Word Title will let you hear both row and column titles in the range you specify. Take care.
