Thus, for example, one might wish quickly to look up the definition for a word encountered while reading an article without taking the time and trouble to visit an Internet website and search for the definition. Once the information is found, the user can rapidly return to the primary task with a single keystroke. This allows the user to find the needed information with a minimum amount of time and distraction. JAWS Research It can do this and other look up tasks, providing that a rule set has been created which tells JAWS where and how to find the information requested. At present JAWS ships with a number of predefined rule sets, but it is inevitable that users will want the ability to use Research It to find data that is not available using those predefined rule sets. It is the purpose of this document to provide a basic introduction to creating these rule sets so users with adequate programming background can learn the basic strategy for creating their own queries. We will discuss the two file types that comprise a rule set and describe what types of information are required in each. We will then discuss how desired information is found and extracted from a webpage, provide a very basic introduction to the programming tools used to find and extract that information, and give a couple of simple examples to illustrate these techniques. However, it is beyond the scope of this article to provide a comprehensive tutorial on how to program these queries. We will provide references to manuals and function libraries that should allow anyone with moderate to advanced programming knowledge to acquire the necessary tools. Such individuals should have little difficulty in expanding the introductory information presented here and learn how to create more complex queries. This article will probably not be very useful for that purpose to those with little or no programming knowledge. It is assumed that the reader has a solid understanding of how to use JAWS and at least some familiarity with how to invoke and use a Research It query. Those who do not should study the JAWS help system before proceeding with this article. Rule Sets A Research It rule set contains two files: a.. Rule File - This file contains the basic information needed to run the query and allow the user to interface with it in the JAWS Research It dialog. It uses the file extension .rul. b.. Query File - This file contains the program which accesses an Internet website, sends any query data to that site, locates the desired data, and returns it as a JAWS Research It result. It uses the file extension .qry. These two files must share a common name followed by one of these extensions. For example, a set might contain the files MyQuery.rul and MyQuery.qry. The Rule File The rule file will normally contain three or 4 entries: a.. Friendly Name - This is a string which is the title of the query the user will see in the JAWS Research It dialog. This is a required entry with a maximum length of 100 characters. b.. Description - This is a more detailed description of the query and is an optional string with a maximum length of 500 characters. It can contain any information which the developer feels will assist the user in using the query such as what the query does and the format for the input data. c.. Timeout - This is an integer defining the timeout in milliseconds that the query will wait to receive a response from the target website. Any query using this rule set will be aborted if it exceeds the timeout specified. The default timeout is 15000 milliseconds and will be used if no timeout value is specified. A longer timeout may be required if the Web site that is queried is slow, if a large amount of data is returned, or if the query is complicated. d.. Version - This optional entry contains the version information for the rule set. An example showing the structure of a typical rule set is shown below: [Details] FriendlyName=Area code lookup Description=Enter a three digit area code to find its location. Aha. I knew I had come across this somewhere. Or at least, I had a feeling. I read through lots of stuff on that website when I was going to get my JAWS certification, and just as happened sometimes at university, there was info overload and I just forgot some of it as soon as the temporary objective was achieved. Hi Fred, The note below has fixed this problem for others: From: Dr. Aleksander Pavkovic yes, I have experienced this as well, and there is a solution. Just go to the control panel or “Apps & Features” and uninstall the FSOCR64 component. Then it might be necessary to restart the system. Afterwards, try Setup again, now It should work. [JAWS-Users] duplicate reading by jaws
Hi all, I have a rather strange issue, not greatly disturbing but rather annoying, and wonder if anyone else had it, or it is a known bug. I usually prefer working through Braille, using now jaws18 and windows10 creator. Some books however, I need to read by speech for reason of time. These books are loaded with footnotes of a multilingual nature. Mr. jaws has a special pleasure in repeating the preceeding text/paragraph plus footnote twice before proceeding, apparently feeling I should learn it well, but this is not necessary. I don't think this is done on my own documents, but really don't know because it is literature of other scholars I read. I would be interested if anybody else perceives or knows the reason for this, and perhaps a cure, if not too tedious. Greetings from Greece and all my support for those among us that live in Los Angeles and seem to endure some big fires, according to what local media reported.\ here. With JAWS support for ARIA continuing to improve and web developers becoming more aware of accessible design, the amount of extra information provided by the Virtual Cursor can become overwhelming when you just want to focus on the page content. To make it easier to determine what is spoken, JAWS now offers three levels of verbosity for the Virtual Cursor, giving you control over how much detail you want to hear when reading various web content. The three levels are: list of 3 items . High - JAWS speaks the most information about elements on the page or inside a document. Everything is announced at this level. . Medium - This level is configured to provide the best user experience on most pages and documents and is the default verbosity level. . Low - JAWS speaks as little structural information as possible about the elements on a page or inside a document. list end To choose a verbosity level, do the following: list of 5 items 1. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center. 2. In the Search edit box, type "web verbosity" without the quotes. 3. Press DOWN ARROW to move to "Verbosity Level" in the filtered search results in the tree view. 4. Press SPACEBAR to choose the level you want. 5. Press ENTER to save your change and close Settings Center. list end You can also choose a Virtual Cursor verbosity level to be active for a specific website. From the website where you want to use a different verbosity level, press INSERT+V to open Quick Settings, navigate to the Personalized Web Settings group, and press SPACEBAR on Verbosity Level to choose the verbosity level you want for the current site. Each verbosity level is preset to provide the most optimal experience. However, just like with speech verbosity, each level can be further customized to give only the information you want to hear. For example, you may want to continue using the default Medium verbosity level, but you may want JAWS to announce a couple more elements that are not spoken by default at this level. To customize a verbosity level, open Settings Center, expand the Web/HTML/PDFs group, expand the Reading group, and expand the Configure Verbosity Levels group. Next, press the SPACEBAR on the verbosity level you want to customize. A dialog box opens containing a tree view listing the structural elements that can be announced by the Virtual Cursor. Use the SPACEBAR to select or clear an element and then choose OK to save your changes. Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool.
