Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS keystroke needed
Vicki. You said you wanted to turn the caps lock off when you need to use the shift key. I may be misunderstanding you here, but, the caps lock and the shift key are 2 different keys. Therefore, other than using the caps lock in the laptop layout, you wouldn't use the caps lock to capitalize one letter. but you know that. Unless you have a strange keyboard like I have that has only one windows key. Re: [JAWS-Users] Sorting a 2010 Excel worksheet
Greg, I modified the original instructions. See if this helps. Instructions You need to select all of your data, including the column headings. Use your applications key to bring up the context menu. Select sort. >From the Sort menu, select custom. You are now in a dialog box which JAWS does not read well. Use the tab key to move around in it. The most important things you need to find are as follows: --The checkbox that indicates whether or not the top row is a headings row for the columns of data, or if it is actual data. If you have column headings, make sure it is checked. --Tab until you get to a combo box, or maybe it is a list box, for which column you want to use for sorting. JAWS can be very uncooperative with reading the contents. --There are 2 more combo/list boxes that allow you to set information about sorting on this column I.E. A-Z, Z-A, ascending, descending, etc. Depending on what you want your sort to look like, you may not need to deal with this. Again, JAWS is not always cooperative with reading this information. Now you have to add a level to your sort. Use the Tab key and go past the Cancel button until you come to Add a level. Use space to select. Now when you continue tabbing through the dialog box you will come to a combo box that is labeled "Then by". This will have all of your column headers listed. Just like before there will be 2 other combo boxes that allow you to change other details about sorting on this column of data. Figuring out which column header goes in the first level and which one goes in the second level usually takes some playing around. The way things are worded makes me think the sort will work differently than it comes out. I usually run each sort separately just to avoid frustration. Someday I will take the time to play around with it. I should have mentioned this in my reply to David a few moments ago. Since I setup her system originally there is a demo copy of JAWS 17 on it just for such emergencies. [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder
Remember that Books folder that I constructed and it then disappeared and I reconstructed it? I followed someone's directions and backspaced or something and it sat comfortably in Documents until I used it yesterday. I transferred The New Yorker magazine into it, and today, when I looked in Documents. The folder was gone. I'd transferred the magazine to my VR Stream so the folder was empty. Hi Fernando, In Jaws quick settings, Options / Basics try these 2 settings if you haven't already. I know I asked this earlier, but I don't know which settings you tried. Using the settings below produced extra Jaws verbiage, but I just don't recall exactly what the control description is supposed to say. Yes, I checked both Quick Settings and the Settings Center for the active verbosity level. In the active level, which is Beginner, I have checked the Control Descriptions item, and changing between long or short messages produce the same result on this problem. Regarding Speech and Sounds Manager, I only changed the Classic scheme to make different heading levels to play piano sounds. Even so, I tried reverting to the original Classic scheme but, as I supposed, the problem is not fixed. I also tried running JAWS in English to see if perhaps this is a specific issue in the Spanish version (it wouldn't be the first time I must edit a translated message missing a %1 or documentation which states things in an order different to the actual one, for example), but this issue is also present in English. I think this should be somewhat related to the FocusChangedEvent, but my knowledge of event functions and scripting language in general is poor. As a workaround I tried to add the SayControlDescription function in the FocusChangedEvent, but it didn't worked at all. Do you have some other ideas I can try? Does someone know how I could fix this to match the behavior of some old versions like JAWS 9, in which this verbosity setting was always honored? Re: [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Drivers Inquiry
Hi jerry. Off-hand, I don't know what steps to take exactly, but I would definitely not write this off as a useless proposition. You can get old drivers for almost anything, and provided the thing did work with Windows 10 at some point, it should still work now. It would be extremely crappy of Microsoft to suddenly stop supporting hardware altogether. There's usually a way to make it work. Re: [JAWS-Users] banners popping up on windows 10
I guess the good news is that, if it's MSN, it's not the type of ad-ware that will be stubborn about not letting itself be removed. I wasn't even aware that MSN was still a thing. The utilities from Sysinternals can be really good for dealing with unwanted processes. In addition to Process Explorer, a faster and more robust alternative to Task manager (faster with JAWS, at the very least), there's Autoruns, which lets you examine every kind of startup item and remove it if necessary. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sysinternals-suite -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Scorpio Sent: February 7, 2018 10:43 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] banners popping up on windows 10 David, I would probably start by checking what's set to start when Windows boots up, start with the processes first, but above all, check the manager to see what processes are running to see if it can be shut off. [JAWS-Users] Sorting a 2010 Excel worksheet
I need to sort a Excel 2010 worksheet by two columns. I am using latest Jaws 2018 on a Windows 10 computer. I found the following instructions on line but as they say Jaws doesn't work well with them. Does anyone have any suggestsions on how to improve Jaws functionality in sorting Excel worksheets? Any help would be appreciated. --There should be another set of 3 combo/list boxes that will allow you to select the second column you want to use for your sort, as well as its criteria. I can never remember which column will need to be in the first set of boxes, verses which one goes in the second set. You will have to play around with it. [JAWS-Users] Toshiba Drivers Inquiry
Morning everyone. My wife has a Toshiba lapptop, and uses no screen reader software. With Windows 10, how would I go about trying to find out if the internal CD rom has the current drivers, and what are the steps for getting them and downloading/installing them? We found out that the latest updates for Windows 10 does not support the cd rom, so this may be, more than likely, a useless proposition. Thanks in advance.
