Yes, insert+f7 brings up a list of links, but insert+f5 is necessary to
bring up a list that contains buttons. He was looking for a button.

using Windows 7 64-bit Pro. While I didn't have the error you describe, I

research, I found a very detailed article that helped me. If you wish,

reinstallations of both ICloud and ITunes. It wasn't easy, but the error has

Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

2018-05-20 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

You were told nice alternatives to make JAWS report superscript and subscript,
so it makes no sense I repeat many things others already said.
Regarding Word automatically not changing ordinals, this is controlled by the
AutoFormat As You Type auto-correct options. These options are per-program
basis, so it is normal it is enabled in Outlook and disabled in Word.
To enable this in Word, go to the File tab, Word Options.
In the Categories list box, choose Proofing and tab to the Auto-Correct Options.
In the dialog opened by this button, press CTRL+TAB until you reach the
AutoFormat As You Type page. Then tab to a checkbox like Ordinals (1th) with
Superscript and press SPACE BAR to check this. I can't give you the exact name
of this checkbox, since many options of this tab have language-specific names.
In the case of ordinals, in Spanish there are both two specific symbols and, in
practice, many people incorrectly use suffixes like “do”, “ra”, etc.

Hope it helps!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

Hi. In previous versions of Word, superscript would be verbalized when I moved
character by character. also, when I typed a number such as 14th, Word would
automatically make the "th" superscript. Neither is happening with Word 2016
and the current release of JAWS 2018. Even more disconcerting, a sighted
assistant tells me that sometimes the "th" or "nd" is superscript, sometimes
not, probably because I'm working in a document created in an earlier version
of Word.

Can anyone suggest how:

  1. To get Word to make "th" and "nd" in numbers like 14th and 2nd
automatically appear as superscript?
  2. To get JAWS to report superscript, and also subscript, in Word documents?
I looked at the intermediate settings for anything that might help, but
nothing leapt out.

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.

format information, will verbalize if a character is superscript.
I just twice went through the entire process of adding superscript and
subscript to my default speech and sound scheme, both times with the
modified version saved and confirmed as my default, but nothing has changed.
I still need to go through my ordinals manually and press JAWS key-f on each
character I want shown in superscript to confirm that it is.
Also, I'm still looking, but I can't find the control in Word for
automatically putting letters after ordinals in superscript.
Why did MS and VFO make each part of this difficult when it was so simple in
previous versions? Rhetorical question.

that I am retired and have time on my hands; I would like to try and write
programs again. I keep getting led around the mulberry bush when trying to

Gerald,

The presence of variable will depend on what you are ordering. I selected
a

DIY frame, and a combo list was presented with a style type to pick. But
regardless, I was not able to work the buttons after that.

But I did see a thread on the JFW list with a similar issue in selecting
something on the screen. Here is that solution:

To select the tick box with JAWS, simply press the bypass key, JAWS key+3
then space bar. This will tick it.

Give that a try and let us know.

On Hollar.com, there are no variables. There are no elements other than
the

quantity edit field which is set to 1 by default and the add to shopping
cart button. You enter the quantity of the item you want if if it is more
than 1 and click on the button to add it to your cart. But no keystroke
will activate it with JAWS or any other screen reader.

I'm speculating that in the case where you cannot press the "Add to Cart
Button" there is some other element (checkbox, combo box, editable combo
box, edit field) that needs to be used/selected before the button will
activate. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then
a
number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size
or

a color choice must first be selected before the button can be activated.
There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on
the item itself, that it's hard to pin down a specific problem related to
JAWS.

Hollar.com using JAWS, nothing happens. I have tried the space bar, enter
key, left mouse click and links list, all to no avail. And switching to
another screen reader doesn't work, either. If anyone has a work around,
pleas share it. To test your work around, I suggest visiting Hollar.com,
and

trying to activate the button to add an item to your shopping cart.

Judy,

That's too much of an open-ended question. First, we don't know which
sites
you are having problems with. Secondly, per your skill level -- are you
able

to put items in your cart in any other shopping sites?

C'mon, give us a clue here.

Just a comment about the fact that I just went to two different websites
to
purchase items and in both of them I was unable to add the item to my
cart.

I am so sick of this. I can look it up and find it, but then can't get
anything to work to add to the cart. I tried three browsers and none of
them

worked. I know my jaws is old, jaws 14, but honestly shouldn't something
work? Any ideas are appreciated. I know homicide is out! Judy & Libby

Adrian, for what this is worth, smile.
The Microsoft support page says:
Insert subscript or superscript text
Applies To: Word for Office 365,Outlook for Office 365,Word 2016,Outlook
2016,Word 2013,Outlook 2013,Word 2010,Outlook 2010,Word 2007,Outlook
2007,Word Online,Word Starter 2010, Less article Superscript and subscript
refer to numbers that are positioned slightly higher or slightly lower than
the text on the line. For example, chemical formulas use subscript (H2O),
and an exponent is often formatted as a superscript (X4).

Examples of Subscript and Superscript formatting

Make text subscript or superscript
list of 3 items
1. Select the text that you want to format as subscript or superscript.

2. Do one of the following:

list of 2 items nesting level 1
On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Subscript. Or press CTRL+=.

the subscript command in the font group

On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Superscript. Or press
CTRL+SHIFT+=.

the superscript command in the font group list end nesting level 1

Note: Keyboard shortcuts do not work if you are using Word Online.

3. To undo the formatting, click the Subscript or Superscript button again,
or repeat the keyboard shortcut.
list end
I tried this, and JAWS 2018 does not tell me that the th in 4th, for example
is written in superscript.
In Office 2010, under options, proofing, I can choose to have superscript
and subscript used or not. I've played with settings, but again, JAWS 2018
does not tell me. Perhaps there's a setting in JAWS that needs to be
enabled that I don't know about? Smile.
Or perhaps Word is ignoring instructions? LOL. I've not asked a sighted
person to check.

Hi. In previous versions of Word, superscript would be verbalized when I
moved character by character. also, when I typed a number such as 14th, Word
would automatically make the "th" superscript. Neither is happening with
Word 2016 and the current release of JAWS 2018. Even more disconcerting, a
sighted assistant tells me that sometimes the "th" or "nd" is superscript,
sometimes not, probably because I'm working in a document created in an
earlier version of Word.

Can anyone suggest how:

  1. To get Word to make "th" and "nd" in numbers like 14th and 2nd
automatically appear as superscript?
  2. To get JAWS to report superscript, and also subscript, in Word
documents? I looked at the intermediate settings for anything that might
help, but nothing leapt out.

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.

the phone which is what I'll have to do tomorrow, but it is just wrong that I
can't do it online. I have an older Jaws, but from what people have written,
that's not the problem. I do have NVDA downloaded and honestly didn't think to
try it. But for me it is just too aggrevating to have to go through all these
various browsers, screen readers, etc to accomplish a simple task of putting
something in a cart. Thanks. Judy & Libby

Which site were you trying to purchase from, and which browser versions did you

I know Google Chrome worked for me on some sites whee IE didn't, but I couldn't
get Google Chrome to work with versions of Jaws earlier than 17.

Second question, as an assistive tech trainer, I often advise my clients to
have at least a demo of other screen-readers in their back pockets, as there

are instances when one will not work while another will.

My only experience with writing programs goes back about 30 years. I

programs again. I keep getting led around the mulberry bush when trying to
find out how and where to learn where we totals can go for learning just for
fun and on what platform the practice can be exercised. I use Jaws 15 and
have Windows 7. I can and would graduate to whatever I needed to if it would
help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Skipping through aYouTube video

2018-05-20 Thread Steve
There are scripts you can get to make Youtube stuff more accessible. Short
of that, what I do is turn off the virtual cursor, then use the K for
play/pause; and J and L for rewind and fast-forward respectively.

If you tab through the screen with the virtual cursor off, you can also find
the volume setting slider and move it up and down.

Hello all- I have seen that sighted people can skip through a YouTube
video
to get to a certain point. When the video is paused I can hear that there
is
a type of bar that allows movement through the video. Is there a way that
we

can skip through the video? I am using JAWS 15 with Windows 7 64bit.

Thanks, Rebecca. Meanwhile, I determined that JAWS key+f, the keystroke for
format information, will verbalize if a character is superscript.
Rhetorical question.

refer to numbers that are positioned slightly higher or slightly lower than

and an exponent is often formatted as a superscript (X4).

Examples of Subscript and Superscript formatting

Make text subscript or superscript
list of 3 items
1. Select the text that you want to format as subscript or superscript.

2. Do one of the following:

list of 2 items nesting level 1
On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Subscript. Or press CTRL+=.

the subscript command in the font group

On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Superscript. Or press

the superscript command in the font group list end nesting level 1

Note: Keyboard shortcuts do not work if you are using Word Online.

3. To undo the formatting, click the Subscript or Superscript button again,
or repeat the keyboard shortcut.
list end
I tried this, and JAWS 2018 does not tell me that the th in 4th, for example

In Office 2010, under options, proofing, I can choose to have superscript

does not tell me. Perhaps there's a setting in JAWS that needs to be

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.

I have set up an account on Hollar.com, but none of your suggestions work.
This is one stubbornly inaccessible web site.

Gerald,
Okay, another shot using Hollar.com. I first tried to use the bypass key
(Insert+3) and then press spacebar -- no reaction. Tried it on both buttons.
Then Tried to route JAWS to pc and used left mouse button. I heard the word
"forbidden" and apparently nothing. Same with the "added" button. Not sure
if I am required to set up an account before I can actually purchase
something or not, so I didn't go further than that. Have you tied any of
these ideas?

Thankks for checking out this site. At least I'm not the only one who is
having this issue. When you click on the add to shopping cart button,
nothing happens. There is no audible feedback to indicate that any action
has been taken. And there is apparently no way to access the shopping cart
to see whether anything has been added. It's too bad because Hollar has a
lot of great stuff cheap, but I guess it is not JAWS accessible.

Gerald,

Out of curiosity, I went to hollar.com. Yes, found the same issue you
report. This shopping site does not play well, as compared to Amazon. Even
if I make sure to select a color, style, or size and make sure that there is
a quantity in the edit spin box, pressing on either the "Add to Cart?"
button or the "Added" button does not give any feedback. Moreover I'm not
familiar enough with the site to know just how to proceed to checkout to see
if the items are in the cart or not. I could not find an element with words
like "checkout", "proceed", "go to", or "view cart". I also suspect that
this site updates itself periodically without warning so as to wipe out the
current search list, so that added a level of frustration. I'll stick with
Amazon for now.

Well, I have also encountered this problem on a number of shopping sites.
For instance, when I try to activate the add to shopping cart button on
Hollar.com using JAWS, nothing happens. I have tried the space bar, enter
key, left mouse click and links list, all to no avail. And switching to
another screen reader doesn't work, either. If anyone has a work around,
pleas share it. To test your work around, I suggest visiting Hollar.com, and
trying to activate the button to add an item to your shopping cart.

The presence of variable will depend on what you are ordering. I selected a

But I did see a thread on the JFW list with a similar issue in selecting

activate. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a
number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size or

There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on

Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart

2018-05-20 Thread Adrian Spratt
Dave and list,

Dave has listed the methods I would try when frustrated by a "confirm" or
"purchase" button. In IE11, I find that if I can't locate the button with the
JAWS cursor, chances are nothing is going to work.
However, websites that don't work with IE11 are increasingly working for me
with Chrome.
Dean Martineau's newsletter this past week links to a lecture on browser
accessibility. Referring to HTML5 content, the speaker said that IE11 picks up
only 50% of controls. Chrome and Firefox were somewhere in-between, and Edge is
at 100%. These percentages don't reflect my browser experience. For example,
she gave a higher percentage to Firefox than Chrome, but my experience with
Firefox 60 is so bad that I've given up on it. I imagine the reason for the
difference between the speaker's numbers and my experience is that HTML5 is
only one coding system that websites use. All the same, the percentages suggest
that IE11 is falling further and further behind.
I hate to promote Chrome because its file menu system is so cumbersome and
often not intuitive. But in terms of speed and greater access to Web content,
it seems to be the best at this moment, May 20, 2018.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

2018-05-20 Thread Adrian Spratt
Thanks, Rebecca. Meanwhile, I determined that JAWS key+f, the keystroke for
format information, will verbalize if a character is superscript.
I just twice went through the entire process of adding superscript and
subscript to my default speech and sound scheme, both times with the modified
version saved and confirmed as my default, but nothing has changed. I still
need to go through my ordinals manually and press JAWS key-f on each character
I want shown in superscript to confirm that it is.
Also, I'm still looking, but I can't find the control in Word for automatically
putting letters after ordinals in superscript.
Why did MS and VFO make each part of this difficult when it was so simple in
previous versions? Rhetorical question.

JAWS Speech and Sound Schemes
Word Classic
JAWS will behave like prior versions with Format and Text options switched off,
except that subscripts and superscripts are suppressed.
So, if you want to know if the superscripts are there, you have to switch to
one of the schemes that give you information about font..

Insert subscript or superscript text

numbers that are positioned slightly higher or slightly lower than the text on
the line. For example, chemical formulas use subscript (H2O), and an exponent
is often formatted as a superscript (X4).

Examples of Subscript and Superscript formatting

Make text subscript or superscript
list of 3 items
1. Select the text that you want to format as subscript or superscript.

2. Do one of the following:

list of 2 items nesting level 1
On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Subscript. Or press CTRL+=.

the subscript command in the font group

On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Superscript. Or press
CTRL+SHIFT+=.

the superscript command in the font group list end nesting level 1

Note: Keyboard shortcuts do not work if you are using Word Online.

3. To undo the formatting, click the Subscript or Superscript button again, or
repeat the keyboard shortcut.
list end
I tried this, and JAWS 2018 does not tell me that the th in 4th, for example is
written in superscript.
In Office 2010, under options, proofing, I can choose to have superscript and
subscript used or not. I've played with settings, but again, JAWS 2018 does
not tell me. Perhaps there's a setting in JAWS that needs to be enabled that I

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.

It seems that with the recent build of jaws and the windows 10 spring creators
update Microsoft edge has gotten usable with jaws. Jaws still says too much in
edge Like entering navigation, and exiting navigation But I can put up with
that as long as edge doesn’t unexpectably stop working like with internet

Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

Aha! The answer.
JAWS Speech and Sound Schemes
Word Classic
JAWS will behave like prior versions with Format and Text options switched
off, except that subscripts and superscripts are suppressed.
So, if you want to know if the superscripts are there, you have to switch to
one of the schemes that give you information about font..

1. Select the text that you want to format as subscript or superscript.

2. Do one of the following:

Hi. In previous versions of Word, superscript would be verbalized when I

Word 2016 and the current release of JAWS 2018. Even more disconcerting, a

Can anyone suggest how:

  2. To get JAWS to report superscript, and also subscript, in Word

Gerald,
Okay, another shot using Hollar.com.

The presence of variable will depend on what you are ordering. I selected a
DIY frame, and a combo list was presented with a style type to pick. But
regardless, I was not able to work the buttons after that.

But I did see a thread on the JFW list with a similar issue in selecting
something on the screen. Here is that solution:

To select the tick box with JAWS, simply press the bypass key, JAWS key+3
then space bar. This will tick it.

Give that a try and let us know.

I'm speculating that in the case where you cannot press the "Add to Cart

box, edit field) that needs to be used/selected before the button will
activate. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a
number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size or
a color choice must first be selected before the button can be activated.
There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on
the item itself, that it's hard to pin down a specific problem related to
JAWS.

Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart

2018-05-20 Thread Dave...Oregonian

Judy,

That's too much of an open-ended question. First, we don't know which sites
you are having problems with. Secondly, per your skill level -- are you able
to put items in your cart in any other shopping sites?

C'mon, give us a clue here.

Just a comment about the fact that I just went to two different websites to
purchase items and in both of them I was unable to add the item to my cart.
I am so sick of this. I can look it up and find it, but then can't get
anything to work to add to the cart. I tried three browsers and none of them
worked. I know my jaws is old, jaws 14, but honestly shouldn't something
work? Any ideas are appreciated. I know homicide is out! Judy & Libby

Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart

2018-05-20 Thread Dave...Oregonian
I'm speculating that in the case where you cannot press the "Add to Cart
Button" there is some other element (checkbox, combo box, editable combo
box, edit field) that needs to be used/selected before the button will
activate. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a
number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size or
a color choice must first be selected before the button can be activated.
There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on
the item itself, that it's hard to pin down a specific problem related to
JAWS.

[JAWS-Users] New windows 10 version #-RE: jaws and Microsoft edge

Kevin, what should be the version number on the spring creators version that I

It seems that with the recent build of jaws and the windows 10 spring creators
update
Microsoft edge has gotten usable with jaws. Jaws still says too much in edge
Like entering navigation, and exiting navigation
But I can put up with that as long as edge doesn’t unexpectably stop working
like with internet explorer!

E-mail is golden!!!

[JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

2018-05-20 Thread Adrian Spratt

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.
