[JAWS-Users] Looking for the latest version of Adobe Reader

2011-03-22 Thread Francis E. Khan
I have been looking through the JAWS program list to download the latest
version of Adobe Reader but can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried to download it from the Adobe site but I can't get the download.

[JAWS-Users] Making graph and accessing them using JAWS

2011-03-12 Thread Francis E. Khan
I received a query from a blind student who wants to prepare his graphs and use
JAWS to read the information. Does anybody on this list know about graphs and
can help with this request?

I was acquainted with this around 1988 when I was using DOS and Word Perfect 4
or 5 or Quattro for DOS and can't remember any of that stuff now. If you don't
have the time, please point me to a website where I can access the information.

you can use excell to make the graph, but as far as jaws reading it? iffy
at most. i did get it to read bar charts but not regular 4 grid graphs.

Betsy/Mike,

The enhanced setting didnt' seem to make a difference but I'm glad I'm
aware of that setting in case I need it in the future, I did set it to 8
digits or more but I think setting it to read by pairs worked. I played
around with various text processing/numeric settings and perhaps a
combination of them got it to work. Thanks for the suggestions and
pointers. A happy date reader now :).

Brad,
Have you tried setting your JAWS numbers setting to something like read
single digits if number contains 8 or more digits? That's what I did and
it was solved.

A possibly more durable solution, then, wouldn't you think, would be

I notice that quite a few people write the list about Research It
not working from time to time.
The most likely cause for this, is that website information used in
  Research It has changed.
Jaws relies on specific information from each site to be available,
and when the website in question changes that information,
the Research It utility fails to work correctly.
This is why FS will have to continually update Jaws in order for
  Research It to work.
Whenever you have a problem retrieving information using this
utility, and you will , simply contact FS to make them aware of the
problem.
I'm not bashing FS, I'm just pointing out why folks that use
  Research It experience these problems.
Personally, I prefer using Internet Explorer since the same
information can be obtained from the individual sites that Research
  It accesses.
So, if Research It fails to get the information you are looking
for, try going to the corresponding website and getting it.
  HTH,
  Rick Justice

Hi Frances,

The best way to secure your programs in event of failure is to use Image
for Windows. David have done a couple of tutorials on backing up the
computer and restoring it.

I tried the demo version which you can do for 30 days. You can find out
more about it at:

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-windows.htm

Here is the URL for the download page:

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads-image-for-windows.htm

Here is the URL for David's tutorial. It is under the utility heading,
items 4 and 5:

http://www.jaws-users.com/audio/

Hope this will help you. You can also use Karen's Replicator to backup
your important programs. David also did a tutorial on this software and it
is a freeware. David's tutorial can also be found on the audio page under
file management heading and it is the first item.

You can get the download for Karen's Replicator at:

http://www.jaws-users.com/programs/

It is the 22nd item under the file management utility heading.

Take care,

Lennie

This is an old bug which FS has known about for years and affects mostly

has been copied to the clipboard, unload and restart JAWS. Or just select
the Copy option from the Context menu to be sure that the command has been

Sure it's accessible with Jaws as it is just a dialog-based program.
It is free for both personal and commercial use.
I personally found it reliable when working with disk monitoring and
registry. It will even remove some cookies from your browser cache.

For maintenance purposes, you might also consider having a good firewall
program like Zone Alarm or WinPatrol. These will make sure that your
computer does not attract unnecessary attention from the network.
Also you may try the Sophos Rootkit Revealer to clean your PC of any
rootkits.

This is simply to mark the fifth anniversary of this list which is an
event I personally am having trouble believing. Bob and I started this out
just to see if it would go and now we boast 541 subscribers. Add in the
membership of blind computing at 375 and yes there are a lot of duplicates
but it still brings the total up to 916. Also thanks to Rick for signing
on around 6 months later after we started out. We'll keep it going so long
as we can keep up with it but as you folks can imagine it is a lot of
email to read every day. I'm so glad there are 3 of us to handle the load.
Also thanks to the membership for being orderly and for the most part
following the guidelines.

[JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 7

2010-09-19 Thread Francis E. Khan
Thank you all for the advice and comments that I received yesterday on this
subject. One of the first things I did was to download the windows site
advisor so that I could see what needed to be done to my computer and I must
say that the information received was comprehensive. My computer is about five
and a half years old and I found out that the RAM was insufficient for
upgrading.

Anyway, I have decided to purchase a computer which we will have to assemble,
acquire about 6 GB of RAM, using a 500 GB hard drive, and asking a friend who
worked in the computer division of a bank where I worked to do the rest of the
project. For the time being, until I get my new setup, I will use the computer
I have.

Hopefully, I should have my new computer within a month.

[JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 7

2010-09-18 Thread Francis E. Khan
I have been using Windows XP for a while and now that I have heard a lot about
Windows 7 and what it can do, I want to purchase a full version of the program
to update my computer. However, I have heard that there are several versions
to choose from such as Home Premium, etc. I want a version that won't cost a
figure which will cause me to apply to the bank for a loan to be paid off in
three years. It should also work with JAWS 11 and later.

I understand that there are many experts on what Windows 7 does and I hope you
can give me advice on what I can buy. Will $200 be enough to purchase my copy
of Windows 7? And from where, directly from Microsoft or Amazon.

One more thing. How do I keep my programs that I use now so that they can work
after the Windows 7 has been installed.

If you decide your computer hardware, software, printer, scanner, and all
other peripherals are compatible, I think you would probably want the
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. If your computer has XP, it is
eligible for the upgrade. In performing an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 a
clean, or what Microsoft calls a custom install is required. This means
it must format the partition and install fresh. If you have enough hard
disk space, you might want to install as a dual boot system, also called
side by side, where it installs Windows 7 in a new partition and leaves
XP installed in a shrunken partition. This allows you to choose when
starting the computer which OS you want to use for that session.

If you decide to buy the upgrade, Amazon has it available for $109.99.
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Home-Premium-Upgrade/dp/B002DHLUWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8s=softwareqid=1284841485sr=8-1
$177.14

Since the link is so long, you might need to cut and paste the link.
Actually, it might be just as easy to go to Amazon.com and search for
Windows 7 upgrade. It will be the first result. Go to the results
quickly by pressing the 1 key.

[JAWS-Users] I need assistance to complete a transaction

2010-09-03 Thread Francis E. Khan
I have a subscription from McAfee so that my antivirus plus program can be
renewed in September. However, it is necessary to include my credit card
details which have changed this year. After including all the details I am
asked to click on a particular item to complete the transaction but, alas, when
I click on it, nothing happens. Usually, to complete the transaction I would
hold down the insert key and then tap the JAWS key which is the last key on the
top row of the keypad. I then use the down arrow key and when I hear the name
of the item to click (let's say Mastercard button) I would press the left mouse
button and the transaction would be completed. However, this is not causing
the transaction to be completed. Unfortunately, I can't point the mouse to the
area to finish the job. Any suggestions?

Otherwise, I will need sighted assistance to finalize this. Now that JFW 12 is
being looked at by lots of people, perhaps someone could have a go to simplify
using the simulated mouse to do more than what we all know.

Hello Chris,

There is a free Daisy translator program for Word. If you install it
there
will be a save as daisy menu with a submenu in the Office menu, as well
as
an additional tab on the Office 2007 ribbon. There is also a free
Pipeline

download. I am using Windows 7 and for some reason, the narrator to TTS
portion of this plug-in doesn't seem to work right. However the creation
of

the Daisy file is done with this plug-in. I use the plug-in to create the
Daisy file and then I use Pipeline to get the TTS working correctly. I
haven't tried the plug-in on other computers that run Windows 7 32-bit or
with earlier versions of Windows, so it very well might do the TTS portion
correctly, I am not sure. However, the Pipeline does it well with the
Daisy

book created by the plug-in. Links to the free Word to Daisy plug-in and
the Pipeline program, as well as an update for the Pipeline program
(patch),

are shown below.

I think that you use Windows 7 64-bit. If so, you might have difficulty
changing the TTS default voice on your system. Here is how you can do
it.

1. Press Windows key with R to bring up the run box.
2. Type in or paste the following:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Speech\SpeechUX\sapi.cpl
3. Tab to OK and press enter key.
4. Your system will open in a list of voices in the text-to-speech page
where you can change the default voice being used.

Here are the links for the Word to Daisy plug-in, the Pipeline program and
an update patch for Pipeline.

do you use the ribbon with the PC cursor, or the JAWS cursor? I like to

tabs when I can't remember where to look.

One of the new features mentioned in the JAWS 12 preview I posted
yesterday is a virtual ribbon option that will emulate the classic
menus in Office 2003 while retaining the ribbon menu structure
everyone loves to hate. For those of you who do not plan to upgrade
to JAWS 12, I just discovered a great little app called Ubit Menu that
adds the classic Office 2003 menus to the Office 2007/10 ribbon menu.
Once you download and install this app, you bring up the ribbon menu
by pressing Alt, right arrow to the Menu tab and hit Enter. Then you
can tab and shift tab through the various classic 2003 menu options
for Word, Excel and Power Point. It works well with JAWS 9, and does
not disrupt the existing ribbon menu structure in any way. So you can
have your cake and eat it too; classic Office 2003 menus, or the newer
and more frustrating Office 2007/10 ribbon menus. So who needs JAWS
12 anyway? Besides, Ubit Menu is availabel now, so you don't have to
wait for JAWS 12 to be released.

I used Quicken way back in 1990 when I was visiting Texas but at that time

user friendly now that JFW is around? And where can I purchase it and how
much does it cost?

These days I use Excel from Office 2003 to check my bank account and other

However, I have one question though. Do you know if the license will let

I was listening to the July 2010 podcast from FS and after half an hour of

Is there a way to fast forward the podcast so that I don't have listen to the

I think JAWS works fine with both versions.
I think the question is more a matter of which Word version you want to

Some of us have upgraded for various reasons, and learned the new ribbon

But if 2003 is working well for you, there may be no need to upgrade.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading my Windows program

2010-07-19 Thread Francis E. Khan

Steve:

My computer works well with XP Home with Service Pack 3 and now that I know
that it will work for another three years or so, I might as well continue
with this version. It was my intention to ask a friend to purchase Version
7 but will cancel that request.

I changed to Jaws Professional from Version 7.1 a few years ago so when I
need to upgrade to another version of Windows it won't be necessary to
upgrade to Professional.

The mother board on my computer was changed earlier this year and the only
thing I need to purchase is a scanner to use with my Kurzweil Version 11 as
I want to make some DAISY files to read with my Bookport Plus player.
However, I need to learn to use MS 2007 as I have Office 2003. I was given
Office 2007 for my birthday in February.

Thanks for all your advice.

Francis,

A couple things to consider...

First, is there a driving need for you to upgrade? Windows XP with SP3
will be supported by Microsoft into 2014. So, you could get another three
years out of your current computer.

Second, consider your computer. How current is it in terms of specs, etc?
Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor available at Microsoft.com to be sure
your system will support Windows 7 and whether you need to update drivers
for printers, scanners, etc. I've worked on some clients computer systems
where we had to purchase new printers or scanners because their scanner
didn't have drivers for Windows 7. This is particularly the case for
64-bit versions of Windows (the 32-bit versions are harder to find in
pre-configured systems).

Third, is their a particular reason you need Win 7 Pro? It does have XP
emulation, but that may/may not be supported in Jaws, and it is rarely
needed except for certain specific programs. I know some gamers for
example who use it. Unless you have specific needs, Home Premium would be
adequate. Note, with Win 7 Pro, you will need the Professional
Authorization of Jaws.

As for price, Professional will be about $200, versus around $100-125 for
HP if you look around.

Hint: you can actually do a full installation from an upgrade disk, which
would save you some money.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hi, you will have to first of all upgrade your Windows, then your JAWS
license. If you are not on JAWS 10 at least then you will need to upgrade
to that. The current version is JAWS 11. Yes I know I said JAWS 10, but it
does work quite well on Windows 7 with few exceptions.

Keep in mind that Freedom Scientific will charge more for JAWS for use in
Windows 7 Pro than it does for Windows 7 Home Premium.

I think Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade packages range from about $100 to
$125. I have heard that Microsoft is again offering a family 3 pack for
$150. A good deal if your family has more than one computer. I guess
this could be used with two other friends as well. It comes with one set
of disks and three license product keys.

I do not know how much an upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate
would be.

Windows Live is actually a service. What Microsoft offers are a set of
free programs, called Windows Live Essentials, that take advantage of
the service. For example it comes with an instant messaging client so
you can connect with your Windows Live Messenger contacts. It also comes
with an e-mail/newsgroup/RSS feed client, so that you can connect to
your Windows Live Hotmail account. But you don't have to; it will also
work with Googlemail or other standard Pop3/Imap4/SMTP providers. Hope
this helps.

This is an example of it's use.
A vestige of a previous attempt to install a program was interfering with
subsequent attempts to install an update for that program. In effect, I
couldn't go forwards or backwards. I couldn't uninstall the previous
version of the program because it wasn't showing in my programs list. When
I ran the cleanup tool, I could see the installer in the list and was able

Hi Folks,

I recently purchased a TV Tuner card for my PC, an internal one to be
exact.

I am currently using Windows XP Home Edition and Jaws 11 latest build.

The software to watch and record live TV with the card is almost wholly
inaccessible, so I was wondering what software I could use, preferably
free, as all my money went out the door for the card that is accessible,
or, at the very least, accessible to the tune of the Jaws cursor, and is
able to run on Windows XP.

Oh, and in case any of you are thinking about it, no, upgrading operating
systems is not an option for me at the moment.

Either way, thanks for everyone's help folks.

Hello Kliph,

Have you installed version 2.32? The reason I am asking is that I had
version 2.29 and the item state was not being read to me. I started to
write a script but then I decided to download version 2.32 and the item
state is now being read by JAWS. If you use the JAWS cursor, the graphic
793 by an item indicates that it is checked and 792 indicates that it is
not

checked. You can move to the graphics with the JAWS cursor and use the
graphics labeler. Label 793 as checked and 792 as unchecked. I found
that using the invisible cursor with the up and down keys spoke the state
after labeling, but of course, you would have to put PC cursor back on
before changing the state of the item. Again, a simple script could be
used
to have JAWS speak the item state using the PC cursor, but if you don't
have

version 2.32 then I suggest you try updating to that version first.

Take care.

So I don't know what is selected. How can I make jaws tell me if the box

checked or unchecked? It works just fine on my vista PC.

Hello Francis,

I have pasted a link below, which should give you the latest version of
CCleaner. There is a check for updates button in the CCleaner interface
window that can be used periodically to check for any new updates.
However,

you might find it easier when checking to go to www.filehippo.com and
download the latest version of the program. When on the File Hippo page
there will be a link to CCleaner. It is usually under the popular
downloads heading. Follow that link and on the subsequent page there
will

be a download latest version link that you can use. If the information
bar pops up use Alt+N to move focus to it and then use the application key
to invoke a context menu. Use down arrow key to the download file
choice
and press enter key. You can then choose to save the file by using the
save
button and start the downloading process. Here is a direct link to the
file

in my drop box:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/ccsetup232.exe

Take care.
