Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
Hi, 8.1 is quite different e.g. there is no start menu, just tiles which takes a bit of getting used to but if you are just running the OS to get access to your applications, that shouldn't be too much of an issue, you need to consider which apps you need to run first. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fred Adams Sent: 05 September 2015 19:50 To: jaws-users list Subject: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade I am using W7, outlook 2010 and latest jaws at present. I am having problems with W7 installing windows updates. A Microsoft technician went through my computer and told me that the only solution to my problem is to get a computer repair tech to repair my computer and the other solution is to upgrade to W8.1 or W10. The computer is to old for W10 but I think it could handle W8.1. I would like to know if there is a big learning curve between W7 and W8.1 as I think that might be the cheapest way to go.This is my old backup and experimental computer so I am looking for easiest and cheapest way out. In the past, I have never had real good success with upgrading and have always found a clean install produces much better performance. Has anyone done this and if so, how does JAWS handle this? My guess is with the later sighted assistance may be needed but with the new and improved narrator maybe not? One other question with upgrading, does a home network that is setup remain intact or does it need to be set up again? I used the media tool from Microsoft, you must have reserved windows 10 to use this tool successfully. I personally give Microsoft a A+ for windows 10. All my files, folders, and settings were transferred without any problems. So far all my programs work. the first time I used the Microsoft tool, it took about 2 hours to download windows 10, but five minutes into the setup it failed. I immediately did the download again, took about 20 minutes, and upgraded my windows 7, 64 bit to windows 10 home, with no issues. Re: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd
Absolutely, you should be able to get away with your OS drive being an SSD and just leave that free for apps such as JAWS and Microsoft Office etc. If you have a 64gb drive, it will be a push in my experience but a 120gb ssd should do the drive nicely. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steve Sent: 22 July 2015 18:11 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd What I was referring to is the metadata causes slower read/write performance in the SSD drive; I didn't mean to imply that it made SSD's slower than mechanical drives, which is not the case. But, the cost-per-megabyte ratio still may not be worth it except for a smaller SSD to store the OS on. The only drawbacks on those 2TB external drives that Londa refers to are they are almost all 5400RPM and have the limitation of USB 3.0 at best for transfer speeds. So, the better solution if you have a desktop at least is to put a second mechanical drive in an available bay and use it for your programs and data. Just use the SSD for Windows and frequently-used programs. Since they are solid-state--just like memory in a computer or an SD card--by definition, all the data lies contiguously with each other. Therefore, there is no need and can only result in harm in defraging a solidstate drive. But, there is a type of defrag done by Windows 7 and 8 as well, which is an intelligent hard-drive defrag if you have system restore running. It is part of the functionality of volume shadowing; there is a lot of metadata that the SSD must store for file management and more metadata means slower read/write performance. From what I understand, when data is deleted, there are trim commands that are stored because a solid-state drive has to copy the data elsewhere before writing to that NAND cell. The basic recommendation on sites like HowToGeek is to avoid programs that claim to have algarithms for defragging solid-state drives as they are unnecessary and tne type of trimming and defragging is handled by the operating system. in Windows 7 and 8 Steve - Original Message - From: Rick Justice To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 2015 10:55 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd Hi Kevin, Actually, there seems to be some debate over whether they should be defragged or not, so I'll just say, in my opinion, I don't defrag SSD's because that creates a lot of unnecessary writes to the drive, which in turn shortens the overall life of the drive. And the way the data is written to the drive, it doesn't seem to result in any real benefit. Yes, a flash drive is solid state, but some computers, especially the old net books can have solid-state drives containing the operating system. This arrangement works really well for me, and I don't think I'll ever go back. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES) Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2015 4:53 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd Much much faster! Re: [JAWS-Users] Defraging SSD's
Hi, Tricky one, in disk management, if you remove the partition and then re-create it, you should receive a wizard which will take you through various steps, one is to assign a drive letter and another is to format the drive, how have you got on with this? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Michael Boyd Sent: 22 July 2015 15:23 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Defraging SSD's I would like to share my experience with my Crucial 120 GB SSD. I had created a Windows Recovery partition on this SSD, which reduced the available space from its normal size of around 105 GB down to ony 32.1 GB. As I did not use the drive for anything at the time, I simply stored it away incase I ever needed it. Lately however, I did have nother need for the drive, so I decided to remove the recovery partition from it to give me back the full amount of available space on it, and I chose to do this by reformatting the drive. So, I did this, and when finished, the drive was cleaned of its contents, of course, but the available space did not return to the 105 GB that I expected, it stayed at 32.1 GB. I then consulted some articles on how to recover the lost space on the drive, and concluded that the partition had not been removed from the drive, and I performed the necessary action to remove it through disk management. Well, low and behold, the entire drive disappeared from my drive list in This PC, and nothing I have tried has been able to make the computer recognize the drive again. When I plug the drive into the computer, I get the normal connection sounds an such, but the drive is not appearing in the drive list. So, it seems to me, that the drive is hidden in some fashion, and I am not surehow to go about getting it to appear again. From what further reading I have done on the subject, I believe it may be something in how the computer changed the binary code on the drive, since any given empty drive should be written with all zeroes, mine was apparently over written in some fashion with all ones or a combination of both. In any case, I am now at a loss as how to recover the drive if possible. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd
You don't need to defrag a solid state drive, turn off defrag, the access is normally about .1 of a millisecond and that is across the board as it is chips rather than a mechanical drive. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kevin Lee Sent: 20 July 2015 22:40 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd I downloaded the new version of auslogics disc defrag and noticed a new entry in the defrag list. what am I doing when I defragment ssd? [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Excel 2010 And JAWS
Hi friends, Is there a way to read titles in excel with a key press? I noted the previous conversation on how to set the heading and specify them using insert+v but I am just wondering if there is a way to read the cell at the top of a colum if it a heading. This used to work with alt+1 but that seems to have stopped working a while ago.For example, I would have a list of items and I would like to read the cell in the top of that column. Oh right, thanks so much, in that case, I think I will go and pay for the 6.99 download. Really appreciate your help. Do you know how I actually get to the addon part to go to install it? I looked on the web and it said go to the start menu then swipe left to the search box but I couldn't figure out how to do that. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will asume you know how to do that. 2. Close Word. 3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates. Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm. Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically create a new Normal.dotm template when you open Word. 4. Open Word. 5. Start a new blank document however you do that. 6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number styles, font, etc. 7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as you set up the things you want files to be based on. 8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As. 9. In the filename box, type, Normal. 10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want. 11. You can tab to the, Save button, press enter or, just press, Alt + S, then press, Alt + F4, to close the document the new Normal.dotm should be saved wherever your default save to is located, which is usually the Documents folder. Now find the newly created file put it into the Templates folder located here: C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates. You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every new document. Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file, just go back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm back to Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have and let Word rebuild one from its default settings. For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can also have Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if you want to save changes to the template. That's typically if you create macros, etc. That setting is under the Save options Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about NVDA and JAWS.
Hi, You wouldn't really want to run both at the same time but you can switch between the two screen readers with no problem. NVDA doesn't make any changes to the video driver chain. It will be up to you to decide on which one you want to load up on the startup screen and then after logon etc. In the past, I have configured my laptop to have NVDA load up at the logon screen and then JAWS after logging on to the machine. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Carolyn Arnold Sent: 13 May 2015 16:40 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question about NVDA and JAWS. Don't seem to be able to find anything on the screen relating to the yes or no buttons to be honest. s -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS) Sent: 13 January 2015 13:01 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Silverlight You can try playing with your virtual cursor--turning it on and off. As you make your way through the program, you may wind up experimenting with Forms mode to see what works well for you. Right now, I'm wrestling with some arrows that sometimes respond to commands and sometimes not. I hate it when I see a control I can't activate, and it really slows down routine operations; I can't exactly call a sighted colleague every time I need to perform a simple function. Ironically, the state had a perfectly functional program to do the same job, until someone decided to improve it. Nonetheless, we're a lot closer than we were 6 months ago--far too close to give up.
