[JAWS-Users] Microsoft Windows 7 Speech Recognission

2015-09-23 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hello friends,

Has anyone tried this and is there any simple instructions anywhere to get
started?
I am guessing that you need to use keyboard shortcuts to start and stop the
dictation etc if you are in notepad or an email for example ior is it not
really worth investing in the time?

[JAWS-Users] JAWS And Outlook 2010

2015-09-11 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi Friends,

Sometimes, JAWS seems to jump in to the message itself when I am arrowing up
and down in the inbox, I am assuming that this is the message preview pain.
Is it good practice to turn this preview pain off and if so, can anyone tell me
the steps to do it please?

Many thanks in anticipation,

Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade

2015-09-07 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi,

8.1 is quite different e.g. there is no start menu, just tiles which takes a
bit of getting used to but if you are just running the OS to get access to your
applications, that shouldn't be too much of an issue, you need to consider
which apps you need to run first.

I am using W7, outlook 2010 and latest jaws at present. I am having problems
with W7 installing windows updates. A Microsoft technician went through my
computer and told me that the only solution to my problem is to get a computer
repair tech to repair my computer and the other solution is to upgrade to W8.1
or W10. The computer is to old for W10 but I think it could handle W8.1. I
would like to know if there is a big learning curve between W7 and W8.1 as I
think that might be the cheapest way to go.This is my old backup and
experimental computer so I am looking for easiest and cheapest way out. This
is an old computer but still works pretty well.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any good t.v. tuner software that will allow you to
playback t.v. through a tuner and also give access to the t.v. guide?
I have tried the Hauppauge WinTV and it has limited functionality.
I tried NextPVR as well and can gain access to the settings etc but can't get

Hi,

You won't get any feedback when iinstalling Microsoft Windows until the sound
card drivers are loaded.
I have always used an Unattend.xml answer script in the past.
Yes, your home group wireless will be lost as essentially, it is a new
installation of Microsoft Windows so all previous data and settings will be
lost.

Hello,

There has been loads of posts I've been following regarding upgrading to
Windows 10 with JAWS. In the past, I have never had real good success with
upgrading and have always found a clean install produces much better
performance. Has anyone done this and if so, how does JAWS handle this? My
guess is with the later sighted assistance may be needed but with the new and
improved narrator maybe not? One other question with upgrading, does a home
network that is setup remain intact or does it need to be set up again?

Best,

Al

Rose,

Jim has updated, I have updated, and now I believe Allen has updated, and we
did not lose any of our programs, files, or settings. Everything remained just
as it was before the update. The only thing that did have to be done, was to
set Internet Explorer back as your default browser. It is said that The Edge is
not quite accessible yet, but I did not bother trying it. I have been able to
use Cortana to perform some tasks for me however, such as asking her to open
programs for me and things like that.

Hi, jaws users:

Important: totally uninstall jaws and reinstall it after you update to windows
10.
I tried just repairing jaws 16, but I could not access the start button.
called Microsoft support, they told me to uninstall and reinstall jaws, and
they were right.
everything is working now except for cortana.
I used the media tool from Microsoft, you must have reserved windows 10 to use
this tool successfully.

I personally give Microsoft a A+ for windows 10.
All my files, folders, and settings were transferred without any problems.
So far all my programs work.
the first time I used the Microsoft tool, it took about 2 hours to download
windows 10, but five minutes into the setup it failed.
I immediately did the download again, took about 20 minutes, and upgraded my
windows 7, 64 bit to windows 10 home, with no issues.
Again, after uninstalling and reinstalling jaws, I had no issues on windows 10.
Good luck to everyone...

The above link gives details of a few features that have been removed from

There are some alternatives for Windows Media Centre that I used to use for

Has anyone tried Mediaportal with access technology or know of a good
alternative to media centre that is preferably free?

Yes, I have exactly the same issue, I enable the JAVA Access Bridge and go to

There is a file that the trusted sites are listed in but I can't figure out how

You are supposed to be able to go the control panel in Windows 7/8 and then to

Unfortunately, when I go in to the JAVA control panel, JAWS won't read

Hi Kevin,

If you are running Windows 8.1, tAdding a enew user has to be done by selecting
Settings from the charms bar, then Change PC Settings. Now select Accounts, and
then Other Accounts. Select Add and follow the prompts to create your new
account.

To make the new account the administrator, highlight the account name, and
change the account type from the account type drop down menu.

To remove the old account, highlight the account that you want to remove, then
tab around until you find the Remove button and click this.

All of these steps are done from the Other Accounts window found through the
settings charm as described above. If you have any other questions, just post

always say yes.

That happens mostly in Dow Jones, and lately, I have been having trouble with
the Dow Jones site. It's like it would hang my computer up, and we'd just have
to turn it off at the tower - two days in a row, so now, it's bye bye Dow
Jones, into Recycle it went!

Best to you from,

Carolyn

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS And JAVA 1.8

 Hi friends,

I have a web site that JAVA is blocking, I need to add it to the
acceptions site list but I can't figure out how to do this, is anyone able
 to help please?
You are supposed to be able to go the control panel in Windows 7/8 and
then to java and security where you can add a trusted site.
Unfortunately, when I go in to the JAVA control panel, JAWS won't read
anything, is there any way to get around this?
I have tried searching on the web and creating an exception.site file in
what would appear to be the correct folder but MSIE11 is still blocking
 this site.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] defragment ssd

2015-07-22 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Absolutely, you should be able to get away with your OS drive being an SSD and
just leave that free for apps such as JAWS and Microsoft Office etc.
If you have a 64gb drive, it will be a push in my experience but a 120gb ssd
should do the drive nicely.

What I was referring to is the metadata causes slower read/write performance in
the SSD drive; I didn't mean to imply that it made SSD's slower than mechanical
drives, which is not the case.

But, the cost-per-megabyte ratio still may not be worth it except for a smaller
SSD to store the OS on.

The only drawbacks on those 2TB external drives that Londa refers to are they
are almost all 5400RPM and have the limitation of USB 3.0 at best for transfer
speeds. So, the better solution if you have a desktop at least is to put a
second mechanical drive in an available bay and use it for your programs and
data.
Just use the SSD for Windows and frequently-used programs.

I agree. I don't think you could pay me to go back to a mechanical drive inside
the computer. I have SSD's on my Lenovo laptop and on my desktop at work. Our
home desktop is still mechanical, and most of my clients still use mechanical
drives. I definitely notice the difference. The only drawback is that you can't
get a really large amount of storage yet on an SSD. I solved that by getting a
2 TB external that is powered off my usb port. It's about the size of a
coaster, so it's extremely portable. This arrangement works really well for me,
and I don't think I'll ever go back.

believe that you can go up to 1tb but the rpice then jumps up.
Just use the ssd for important apps and use another mechanical drive for large

Hi,

Tricky one, in disk management, if you remove the partition and then re-create
it, you should receive a wizard which will take you through various steps, one
is to assign a drive letter and another is to format the drive, how have you
got on with this?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Defraging SSD's

I would like to share my experience with my Crucial 120 GB SSD. I had created a
Windows Recovery partition on this SSD, which reduced the available space from
its normal size of around 105 GB down to ony 32.1 GB. As I did not use the
drive for anything at the time, I simply stored it away incase I ever needed
it. Lately however, I did have nother need for the drive, so I decided to
remove the recovery partition from it to give me back the full amount of
available space on it, and I chose to do this by reformatting the drive. So, I
did this, and when finished, the drive was cleaned of its contents, of course,
but the available space did not return to the 105 GB that I expected, it stayed
at 32.1 GB. I then consulted some articles on how to recover the lost space on
the drive, and concluded that the partition had not been removed from the
drive, and I performed the necessary action to remove it through disk
management. Well, low and behold, the entire drive disappeared from my
drive list in This PC, and nothing I have tried has been able to make the
computer recognize the drive again. When I plug the drive into the computer, I
get the normal connection sounds an such, but the drive is not appearing in the
drive list. So, it seems to me, that the drive is hidden in some fashion, and I
am not surehow to go about getting it to appear again. From what further
reading I have done on the subject, I believe it may be something in how the
computer changed the binary code on the drive, since any given empty drive
should be written with all zeroes, mine was apparently over written in some
fashion with all ones or a combination of both. In any case, I am now at a loss
as how to recover the drive if possible. Any help or suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks.

You don't need to defrag a solid state drive, turn off defrag, the access is
normally about .1 of a millisecond and that is across the board as it is chips
rather than a mechanical drive.

Hi Kevin,
SSD, solid-state drive.
You do not defrag these.
Defragging is for mechanical drives only.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws license for my computer

2015-07-18 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi,

You have three key counters normally, when you install JAWS, you have to
activate it which uses up one of these keys.
If you run out of keys, you can contact Freedomscientific to request a reset.
Not sure how many machines the licence covers,, may 1 or two installs, you
could try contacting Freedomscientific to verify this,
supp...@freedomscientific.com.
If you format or wipe the machine, the installation key will be lost and you
won't be able to retreave it.

I hope that this is of some help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS And Windows 8

2015-07-17 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
It's o.k. thanks friends, I have found it, you can do this from control panel,
enter update in the ssearch field and then tab to add features, it asks you for
your serial number but the product has to be activated first and this is
proving to be a nightmare on the automated phone system.
I can't get JAWS to read the screen with the activation codes on it either for
some reason :-)
Not sure if it is protected but insert+alt+w won't capture that screen to text,
not sure if there is a video card issue.
I may need to ask my Wife to help me with this process.
Total rubbish, very Disapointing Microsoft although I know they have to
protect their product from piracy!
Itg sholdn't be that difficult to activate!

[JAWS-Users] Microsoft Excel 2010 And JAWS

2015-07-01 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi friends,

Is there a way to read titles in excel with a key press? I noted the previous
conversation on how to set the heading and specify them using insert+v but I am
just wondering if there is a way to read the cell at the top of a colum if it a
heading.
This used to work with alt+1 but that seems to have stopped working a while
ago.For example, I would have a list of items and I would like to read the cell
in the top of that column.

Then the time will come that they'll want to dump 10. No telling what we'll

Oh right, thanks so much, in that case, I think I will go and pay for the 6.99

Really appreciate your help.
Do you know how I actually get to the addon part to go to install it?
I looked on the web and it said go to the start menu then swipe left to the

I think you need to search for add features but I tried this in the run box and
it didn't find any results.
I think that I will have to activate cmy copy of Windows 8 first, before
installing Windows Media Centre.

For a period after windows 8 was launched, windows media centre was a free add

some guidance?
I am just wondering that once you have made the purchase, what happens if you
have to re-build your machine, do you have to purchase Media Centre again?
I have not yet activated the Windows 8 as I am still trying to decide on
whether I will keep it or go back to Windows 7 but I would like to try to get

Oh right, thanks so much, in that case, I think I will go and pay for the 6.99

Really appreciate your help.
Do you know how I actually get to the addon part to go to install it?
I looked on the web and it said go to the start menu then swipe left to the
search box but I couldn't figure out how to do that.
I think you need to search for add features but I tried this in the run box and
it didn't find any results.
I think that I will have to activate cmy copy of Windows 8 first, before
installing Windows Media Centre.

In Windows 8 it is called File Explorer, and sometimes referred to as This PC.
You can try pressing Windows + X, then arrowing to File Explorer, and right
click on this, or do a search from the Start Screen. File Explorer is on the
Start screen however.

No, same computer, black screen, cooling fan on, frozen and wont wake up.
The main operating system wont start, just the computer. So basically I
hold down the power butnon for 10 seconds. I hit the per button and
nothing happens. A sighted person saw this error: Windows did not shut
down correctly, would you like to turn it on in safe mode? I hit the
enter key on start windows normally. Then there is a blincking cursor,
and stays there for 10 minutes. Then the screen goes black, however the
cooling faar is steady and loud. Eghen hitting the power button does
nothing. So the main operating system doesn't start.

I got it to work. I just did a force-restart after the battery drained
compleetly. First I plugged it in, I hit the power button. The fan came on,
but no signs of life. I did a force-shut down for 10 seconds. I had a sighted
person look at it. I hit the power botton and the person saw the same windows
didn't shut down correctly error. Jaws never speaks that and they should fix
that. So I hit controol-altogether-delete and it took me to a page to open up.
Hit the enter key, closed the page by hitting space. Then it returned to the
same error. Hit enter and the fan just came on. Nothing else happened. Black
screen.
Then I did another force-restart and hst enter to dismiss that error. The fan
again came on and the screen was finally at starting windows. Yes! I finally
got it past the cooling fan sound. - Original Message -

If you do need to replace the cooling fan which that might be the issue you
might want to consider also buying a cooling fan tray. I added one of these
devices to my laptop It uses a USB to turn the coolling fan tray on. Lastly,
if you know you are not going to be using the PC for a while consider putting
it to sleep. Just some ideas.

Hi, I have a toshiba computer and it is not turning on. The battery is fully
charged. When I plugged it in then try to hit the power button nothing
happens. Not even the fan turns on. It was previously in a blue screen of
death error when shutting down, but now it's frozen on a black screen. How do
I het it to start back up?

 Hi,

You wouldn't really want to run both at the same time but you can switch
between the two screen readers with no problem.
NVDA doesn't make any changes to the video driver chain.
It will be up to you to decide on which one you want to load up on the
startup screen and then after logon etc.
In the past, I have configured my laptop to have NVDA load up at the logon
screen and then JAWS after logging on to the machine.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010

 Hi Steven,

The steps below are for Word 2013 but, should work for Word 2010 as
 well.:

Before creating a new Normal template you should first make a backup of
 your
 normal.dotm template.
 1. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will
 asume
you know how to do that.

 2. Close Word.

 3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \
 Templates.
Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm.
Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically create
 a
new Normal.dotm template when you open Word.

 4. Open Word.

 5. Start a new blank document however you do that.

 6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number
 styles,
 font, etc.

 7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as you
 set
up the things you want files to be based on.

 8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As.

 9. In the filename box, type, Normal.

 10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file
type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want.

 11. You can tab to the, Save button, press enter or, just press, Alt +
 S,
then press, Alt + F4, to close the document the new Normal.dotm should
 be
saved wherever your default save to is located, which is usually the
Documents folder. Now find the newly created file put it into the
 Templates folder located here:
 C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates.

You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every new
 document.

Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file,
 just
go back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm back to
Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have and let Word
rebuild one from its default settings.

For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can also
have Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if you want
 to
save changes to the template. That's typically if you create macros, etc.
That setting is under the Save options

 Take care.
 Mike

I tried Killdisk For Windows a while ago but it didn't seem to be too

Hi Steven,

The steps below are for Word 2013 but, should work for Word 2010 as well.:

Before creating a new Normal template you should first make a backup of your
normal.dotm template.
1. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will asume you
know how to do that.

2. Close Word.

3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates.
Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm.
Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically create a new
Normal.dotm template when you open Word.

4. Open Word.

5. Start a new blank document however you do that.

6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number styles,
font, etc.

7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as you set up
the things you want files to be based on.

8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As.

9. In the filename box, type, Normal.

10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file type
called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want.

11. You can tab to the, Save button, press enter or, just press, Alt + S,
then press, Alt + F4, to close the document the new Normal.dotm should be
saved wherever your default save to is located, which is usually the Documents
folder. Now find the newly created file put it into the Templates folder
located here:
C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates.

You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every new
document.

Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file, just go
back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm back to
Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have and let Word rebuild
one from its default settings.

For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can also have
Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if you want to save
changes to the template. That's typically if you create macros, etc.
That setting is under the Save options

Take care.
Mike

Hello Steven,

To change the default location for user templates do the following:

1. Press Alt+F.
2. Open Word options. In Word 2013 Alt+T is used so I think it is the same
for 2010.
3. Arrow down the list of categories to Advanced or press A until you get
there.
4. Use shift with tab several times and you will find the File Location
button. Press spacebar on it.
5. In the list of the types of files arrow down to user templates if you want
to change location for those templates.
6. Tab to the Modify button and use spacebar.
7. Use the tree and list views to browse to where you want to have these types
of files saved to automatically.
8. Use OK or whatever the accepting button is until you are out of the dialog
boxes.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about NVDA and JAWS.

2015-05-14 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi,

You wouldn't really want to run both at the same time but you can switch
between the two screen readers with no problem.
NVDA doesn't make any changes to the video driver chain.
It will be up to you to decide on which one you want to load up on the startup
screen and then after logon etc.
In the past, I have configured my laptop to have NVDA load up at the logon
screen and then JAWS after logging on to the machine.

I right click the message and go through the rule wizard but it keeps saying

ideas what I may be doing wrong please?

Many thanks in anticipation,

You can try playing with your virtual cursor--turning it on and off. As you
make your way through the program, you may wind up experimenting with Forms
mode to see what works well for you. Right now, I'm wrestling with some arrows
that sometimes respond to commands and sometimes not. I hate it when I see a
control I can't activate, and it really slows down routine operations; I can't
exactly call a sighted colleague every time I need to perform a simple
function. Ironically, the state had a perfectly functional program to do the
same job, until someone decided to improve it. Nonetheless, we're a lot closer
than we were 6 months ago--far too close to give up.

Hello Hick,

From what I have read about File Manager Pro, it is a smart phone app,
available for both android and iPhone. This is an app that works similar to
the old windows Explorer on a PC, and much like File Explorer on the later
