Re: [JAWS-Users] [now fixed, JAWS-Users] Jaws stops speaking for 10 to 15 seconds

2013-11-24 Thread Paul Magill
Hi Steven &all,

You were right, the I T person found the system was very busy fetching
files & data from the server at my old office.

Somehow, my roaming profile had not properly transferred to the new office,
so there were significant delays with some programs fetching what they
needed from the old server.

They sorted out the profile problem & rebooted the machine. The problem with
Jaws not speaking for long periods was fixed.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
Paul from Australia.

In my opinion, you would want to be checking your network settings if the PC
has moved from a different location and nothing else has changed.
It sounds to me as if something is taking up all the machine resources for
the duration that JAWS is not speaking as there are not enough resources
left for it to run correctly?
Possibly check in the event log of the machine.
What operating system is it?
Can you try a different network port/cable or disconnect any network drives
temporarily?

Hi all,

I'm using JAWS version 13 at work, & have recently moved to another branch.

At the old office, Jaws was working brilliantly well, with no issues at all.

When I changed offices, I took the computer I was using with me, & there
are no Jaws related files on the server.

Now, Jaws randomly just stops talking for 10 to 15 seconds, then returns to
normal. In between, it works as well as before. It happens 3 to 4 times
an hour, which is becoming quite frustrating, especially when on the phone
to a customer.

There is nothing I can do to make the voice come back on, I tried
alt-tabbing elsewhere, & everything else I can think of, but no joy.

If I don't do anything when it stops talking, it just comes back on after 10
seconds or so...

Can anyone please suggest what might be causing this, or what I can do to
track it down...

Thank you,
Paul from Australia

Re: [JAWS-Users] Copy File name

2013-07-20 Thread Paul Magill
Hi Nicole,

2 methods.

These presume you are using Windows Explorer in Windows 7, and have focus on
the desired file name.

Press shift+applications key, which brings up a list of options, then arrow
down to "Copy as Path".
Hit enter on that, and the full file path will be copied to the clipboard
with no feedback from Jaws.

If you just want the file name, then press F2, then highlight the file name
using shift and an arrow key, do the control+C to copy to the clipboard,
then ***very importantly, press escape to drop out of that edit field, as F2
is used to change file names.

Hope this helps,

Hi Steven,

Home Row is now called Script Utility mode, & you can read more about it in
the "Basics of Scripting" files provided by FS with each version of Jaws.

It is a self extracting zip file in the JAWS manuals folder. - it will
unpack to 50 .htm files in the folder:

The file you are looking for is near the bottom of the list & is called,

[JAWS-Users] problem using Same Time in Lotus Notes

2012-06-16 Thread Paul Magill
Hi all,

At work we use the Same Time messaging service that is part of Lotus Notes.

I can use it fine where I have the person I'm sending it to on the Same
Time contact list, but have difficulty sending a "one off" message, to
someone I have not previously received any contact or email from..

I type their name into the edit field that gains focus when the Same Time
feature is activated, & can use the JAWS cursor to click on the word
"Search" which according to Jaws seems to be one line lower, and that
generally allows, "chat" to become available on the list brought up by the
application key.

Then all goes well. But this is very fidgity, tedious and darn time
consuming...

Can anyone please tell me an easier way...

i e. type the person's name, then...???

With much appreciation,
Paul from Australia

Subject: Here is the information I promised about adding to default script
files

Hi David,

In the event you are just adding to your defaults rather than modifying our
scripts, this could be helpful avoiding problems in the future.

Regards,

Eric

Safely Adding Default Scripts

Starting with JAWS 12, the default script file makes use of
MyExtensions.jsb. MyExtensions.jss includes standard headers, but contains
only a couple of stub functions for source code. The purpose of the
MyExtensions scripts is to include in the JAWS distribution a script source
file that will never contain any Freedom Scientific source code, thus
allowing the end user to safely add new custom scripts without the need to
make any changes due to a JAWS update. For this reason, new scripts and
functions added to MyExtensions and placed in the user settings folder is a
safe way to add custom scripts to JAWS.

You should be aware, however, that MyExtensions should not be used to
overwrite existing scripts or functions. Default scripts and functions do
not call down to MyExtensions, so any scripts or functions in MyExtensions
that have the same name as those in default or application scripts will
never run. Scripts or functions with unique names will run, which is why you
can use MyExtensions for added scripts and functions.

Because JAWS key map (JKM) files are layered, you can also assign key
mappings to your added MyExtensions scripts in default.jkm in your user
settings. You can use Keyboard Manager to locate your scripts in
MyExtensions by looking under Default scripts and assign keys to your custom
scripts.

By adding your custom scripts to MyExtensions, and assigning keys in
default, you can safely extend JAWS scripts to include your own custom
scripts. If you have developed a library of custom functions in a JSB file,
you can add it to MyExtensions through the Use statement and it will now be
available to you.

Just remember to use unique names for scripts or functions added through
MyExtensions, and save your modified MyExtensions source and compiled files
to your user settings, and you should be able to enjoy your own custom
scripts added to JAWS without having to make changes due to JAWS updates.
You can also copy your MyExtensions files to new versions of JAWS. Depending
on the extent of your script coding, you may want to ensure that your
scripts are up-to-date with the latest script innovations, but you won't
need to modify your scripts simply because JAWS updated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] scripting

2012-01-25 Thread Paul Magill
Hi,

Yes, the examples from that book will still compile.

FS goes to a lot of trouble to make their scripting, & other features,
backward compatible.

In some more complex scripts, changes have been required between JAWS
versions, but by the time you can write scripts of that kind, handling the
changes is not an issue.

For anyone who runs into compile errors they can not resolve, then on the
JAWS scripting list, post the query with a copy of the script or function
that is causing the problem, along with a copy of the error message the
compiler gave, & someone may be able to help...

Re: [JAWS-Users] scripting

2012-01-25 Thread Paul Magill
Hi,

I think that the book/file,
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Writing JFW Scripts, But Didn't
Know Whom to Ask, by Ken Gould
is still the best way for the beginner to get into scripting.

That book was my starting point, along with help from the JAWS scripting
list suggested in an earlier post.

Remember though, that book was written before JAWS 6.0, and the location of
scripting files is now differnt, & there are now more functions, features
etc not covered.

* I mention this just so you are aware, certainly not to discourage the use
of the book, as I said, I think it is still the best way to start.

FS also provides a book, Basics of Scripting, located in the manuals folder
of each version.

When you get to the point of understanding the use of functions, you may
like to download from FS the FSDN function reference guide, which is
basically the information available from the control+I keystroke, but
arranged in a more friendly way to help you find a suitable function to use.
It also has some other useful topics.

- you can download the FSDN from the FS download page:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/documentation/screen-readers.asp
which also has other files relevant to scripting.

That is what we are here for. If you have any questions, ask on. For more
complex backup and archive tasks the tags work great. They probably need
some explanation, so I will provide an example. Adding a Job with the
following target directory will create a separate directory structure of the
source directory, "Finance", in this case. The new structure will create a
new folder each new year and subdirectories each month of that source
folder. Each new month, a new folder is created and the entire Finance
folder is archived. Each night at 1 am, the default backup time, any
changes to the archive folder is updated. Therefore, at the end of each
month, a copy of everything in that folder is preserved. I do not do this
for many folders, just the very important folders, since it creates so many
copies.

Target directory:
C:\Users\Don\Documents\Finance\\Month\

The portion"Month" will create a new folder each month, such as
"Month01" for January, and so on in a folder for the current year, such as
"2010".

Karen's Replicator is very flexible and powerful. However, I do not think
there is a way to have more than one target or destination directory for
each job name. I have asked Karen and the number of possible jobs is
unlimited! So just create a series of jobs with similar names. I use at
least 10 jobs. I even use the tags in target directory names in order to
automatically keep archives of certain folders. It also works great across
a home network to make backups of important data to another computer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Kill JAWS

2010-05-20 Thread Paul Magill
Hi all,

- there may be a misunderstanding in this thread...

The JawsKey+F4, and WindowsKey+JawsKey+F4, are not 2 different ways of doing
the same thing.

The JawsKey+F4 is used in normal situations when you want a normal shut down
of Jaws for any reason. - it provides a confirmation prompt, & allows you
to continue the shut down or not.

The WindowsKey+JawsKey+F4 method is for when Jaws is experiencing a problem,
& can not be shut down sufficiently by the above method, in order to be able
to reload jaws & carry on working.
In some situations, when Jaws has crashed, or another process has crashed
Jaws, you can use WindowsKey+JawsKey+F4 to shut down Jaws and all its
associated processes, thus allowing it to be restarted in the usual way
without rebooting.

Note, it does not always work, but saves a lot of time when it does. This
method also causes an error reporting file to be created, and if asked by FS
support, can be emailed to them to assist in analysing the initial problem.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 & reading of links in Outlook express messages

2009-09-18 Thread Paul Magill
Hi all,

I am using Outlook Express as my email client.

I have just changed up to Jaws 10 from version 8, and have found that email
addresses in posts now read as links, saying link, followed by the address
in a different voice.

How can I get this back to reading the whole text in messages in the same
voice, the way version 8 did it?

With thanks in advance.

Regards,
Paul from Aust

Re: [JAWS-Users] Placing a file in enu

2008-06-09 Thread Paul Magill
Hi Vicki,

One easy way to gain access to the different Jaws .enu folders is:
Start menu. programs, then hit J until you find the Jaws version you are
currently using, then right arrow and you will be on Explore Jaws subMenu.
Then right arrow again and you will be in a list of .enu folders that Jaws
uses.

these are:
Explore My Settings,
the folder where scripts, dictionary & graphic files etc which have been
changed or added by you, or are specific to your machine.

Explore Program files,
the folder where the actual files that run Jaws are kept, & sometimes extras
are added.

Explore Shared settings,
the folder where scripts, dictionary & graphic files etc which came with
Jaws are kept. These were put here when the version was installed and are
referred to as the default settings for the different programs. Unless
specifically instructed, these files should not be changed, & additional
files should not be added to this folder.

Explore the manuals,
this is the last one in the list on my system.

If it is a script file, the first letter of the file extension is usually J,
then it should go in the folder reached by hitting enter on, Explore my
settings.

If you post the name of the file, or files, then someone may be able to
advise where it should go...

Regards,
Paul from Aust.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what it is. I assume it's a script. It's to aid
with the V.I.P communicator. I also found an enu folder under all users.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem making a new hotkey stick

2008-06-04 Thread Paul Magill
Hi Jason and list,

I found the same hot key problem on moving up to version 9.

Using the same method as you, except for hitting the apply button,
attaching a hot key has worked fine since Jaws 3.3.

With version 9 though, I found that if I simply pressed the 9, then
continued around to the ok button, without going back to check that the
control + alt had been added, then it stuck.

The installation process went fine for me.

Hi Jason, I also find that I cannot do this with JAWS. I have to unload
JAWS, run Window Eyes, and perform the operation. Then the hot key will
stick, and I can then unload WE and run JAWS using the new hot key. This
has been the case with JAWS for as long as I can remember, and it is not
machine specific either.

Hi list,
I just got around to installing my copy of Jaws 9 on my desktop. I had
to request a new disk copy from FS, as the original one mailed to me
wasn't working. I finally got Jaws 9 installed. I did notice that Jaws
was a bit sluggish during installation. For example, wouldn't always
announce things like "press enter or the spacebar to continue" etc. In
addition(unlike previous versions) I wasn't prompted to install the
training materials until after I had finished the installation and asked
to reboot. The problem I am now having, is making a hotkey to start Jaws
stick. What I am doing is as follows. 1 go to desktop and find Jaws 9. 2
press context key. 3 arrow up once and enter on properties. 4 tab to the
define new hotkey section.5 type the number 9. 6 tab and shift tab to
check that it reads "control alt 9" for the hotkey. 7 tab to the apply
button and press enter or spacebar. 8 tab to the okay button. 9 reboot
the computer, to make sure the change has taken effect. However, when I
do insert F4 to unload Jaws and then try the hotkey, nothing happens.
However, my old hotkey of control alt J for Jaws 8, obviously still
works. Have I missed a step somewhere, or am I doing something else
wrong?
thanks Jason

Re: [JAWS-Users] AddHook function

2008-04-25 Thread Paul Magill
Hi Janne,

Rather than the AddHookFunction, which I think may not be suited for your
purpose, consider the following.

If you simply want a script to stop part way through, so you can examine the
screen contents at that point, insert the following line at the point in
your script where you want it to stop.

IF 1 THEN RETURN ENDIF; for testing only

and semi colon out the line when not needed.

If you want to examine the contents of some variables part way through a
script, and perhaps after continueing the scripts operation for some more
lines, then again look at the variable values, try the following method.

Just call this function from where you want to check the values...

Note. in the below sample copied from one of my script sets, the variables
are integers, but you can soon simplify it for strings. It uses the virtual
buffer, but instead, you could use the MessageBox function passing in,
CurrentValues.

include "common.jsm" ; for virtual buffer...

Function ListVariables ()

; lists the current value of particular variables. Used for debugging

VAR

STRING CurrentValues

; Note the \N causes a new line, otherwise it would all be on 1 line

LET CurrentValues =

"CharWidth = " + IntToString (G_CharWidth) +

"\NOnePoint5CharSquared = " + IntToString (G_OnePoint5CharSquared) +

"\NRowHeight = " + IntToString (G_RowHeight) +

"\NHalfRowHeight = " + IntToString (G_HalfRowHeight) +

cScBufferNewLine + cScBufferNewLine +

cMsgBuffExit

If UserBufferIsActive () then

UserBufferDeactivate ()

EndIf

Pause ()

SayFormattedMessage (OT_USER_BUFFER, CurrentValues)

EndFunction

As mentioned in an earlier post, the JawsScripting list may be a better
forum for this type of enquiry...

Regards,

Paul from Aust.

Hello list.

I am new to this list. I am interested in script programming and have a
question.

In a script I am writing on, i need the script to just stand still and check
my keyboard entries an compare them to different string variables. I think
that the AddHook () would be the thing to use. I have read the documentation
and have looked at it in the default.jss file but i can't really understand
it. If anyone on this list can make my small brain to understand how to use
it, please help me.

Thanks in advance, Janne

Hi,
