Jarte uses the same classic menu structure as Wordpad, upon which it is
based. You just press the Alt key to launch the menus, just as you would
with any other program. To invoke the spell checker, just press F7.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!

Hi Andy,

I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is
just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully
compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find
it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and
find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much
of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice
regular old menu system.

So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can
already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor.
It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad.

A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose
of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file
list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By
default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list,
you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format.

Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want
to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the
all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter.
Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all
folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your
list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of
folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there
is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet,
and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type
box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files
and folders are!

I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description
of features. On that same page is also the download link. The installation
file you download is small, less than 4 mb. Installation was completely
perfect and easy, both for accessibility and for clarity.

The link is below, just past my name. Thanks again Andy!

Assuming you have your Jaws activation disk, you can request Freedom

I've had good success with it although I've only have used the word
processor and spreadsheet. One thing you'll have to have installed is the
Java Access Bridge. I have to admit that I haven't 'tortured tested' the
program yet, but so far it hasn't crashed on me.

One part of the suite that I haven't had a chance to try out is the

predefined templates.

I think it's worth giving it a test drive.

I am wondering what the best general settings are for reading PDF documents
in Adobe or is there a better program than Adobe for reading them. My issue
is consistency.

I am looking for settings in the PDF document, not in JAWS, although if
there are settings that will improve the readability of PDF documents by
changing JAWS settings, I would love to know those as well.
I was doing my bank statement this morning and reading it with JAWS 18 and
some of it was not reading. When I switched to JAWS 14, the missing items
showed up. No matter which version I use, PDF documents never read in any
correct order, at least the ones I need to read.

Hi All iTunes Users,

iTunes is driving me crazy. I am trying to add new content to my iTunes
library so that I can make a Play List and then put that Play List on my
iPhone. I am using the latest version of iTunes and JAWS18 on a Windows7
machine. I find that sometimes using Tab or Control+Tab or F6 all do the
same thing for navigating, and other times they do not. When I land on most
buttons, JAWS announces to use the Space Bar to select, but I find that if
it is going to let me select it, I will have to use the Enter key.

I thought that when you selected Add to Library from the File Menu iTunes
would go out and find any new content, i.e. MP3's on your hard drive and add
them to the iTunes folder, and to the iTunes library. This is not
happening. I've even tried pasting the new MP3 files in the iTunes folder
and then going through what I think are the steps for adding them to the
iTunes library, and they still do not show up. I am selecting Add to
Library, and then in the dialog box that pops up I am thinking that I am
selecting one of the items in the list, and I do hear the iTunes sound that
usually indicates it is finished.

Can anyone help me with this?

Annette

Hi Jaws users list, this is my updated section of my W-10 and Jaws, complete
guide for the anniversary update to W-10. Please read and let me know what
you all think about the guide. This helps me to determine if I am helping
you all learn about W-10.

Section, Customizing Windows 10 with Jaws.

Customizing w-10 with Jaws.

Overview.
Each section starts with***.
1. Reinstalling Jaws 17.
2. Setting default programs in w-10.
3. Changing your folder options, now called File Explorer Options, in w-10.
4. How to Turn off the background apps in w-10.
5. How to change how Windows updates are delivered.
6. Live Tile Region, now called, pinns view list box.
7. The All Apps region, now called, apps view list box, of the Start button
area.

8. How to put the, This PC, Icon on the Desktop.
9. How to put a shortcut to your user folders, on the Desktop.
10. Making Program shortcut Icons, on your Desktop.
11. How to put a shortcut, for iE on your Desktop or Taskbar.
12. Using a Pin to log-in to w-10.
13. How to Verify your Microsoft Account in Windows 10, I think this is
correct.

14. Miscellaneous.
15. Making your W-10 desktop look like W-7.
16. The Notification area and the Notification Chevron button.

1. ***Reinstalling Jaws 17.
1. The first thing you may want to do on your Windows 10 computer is,
Download the latest version of Jaws 17 to your Download folder.
2. If you upgraded to w-10 from w-7 or w-8.1, you should for best
performance, uninstall Jaws, you can keep shared components and shared
settings, so, uninstall Jaws 17.
3. You then can use Narrator, press Windows key+Enter, to turn Narrator
on/off, to go to your download folder where a downloaded copy of Jaws 17
should be already downloaded.

4. Now, install Jaws 17, Freshly on to your new w-10 computer.
5. This has proven to increase the performance of Jaws on w-10, especially,
in the Start button area, and in the Settings area of w-10.

6. Redo your Jaws shortcut keystroke, Control+ALT+J.
7. Redo your Jaws setting to make sure, that it is set to come on at the
log-onscreen.
For whatever reason these two settings are not saved, all other Jaws
settings are preserved.
8. If you are using Open book, you should do a fresh reinstall of this
program as well as, any other screen reading programs, on your w-10
computer.

2. ***Setting default programs in w-10.
1. windows key+I, Opens the settings area, search edit box.
Tab one time, You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and
left arrow keys to move across the items.
2. Right arrow to System, press enter, tab one time, down arrow to default
apps and press enter.
3. Tab across this window, look for the internet browser which by default is
Microsoft edge.
4. Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE 11, press the spacebar, this
will set IE as your default browser.
Do the same thing with all the different default programs, for example,
email clients.
5. Tab to, say, WLM email client default, press the spacebar on it, tab to
say, Outlook 2016, and press the spacebar, to set Outlook 2016 as your
default email client, .

3. ***Changing your File Explorer Options:

So for an easier way of finding it, do the following.

2. Start typing, file explorer options.
3. Press down and up arrow, look for File Explorer Options, Control Panel,
press enter.

4. By default, on the general tab the first item is set to Quick Access.
Down arrow one time to change it to, This PC if that is what you wish, I
like the quick access setting better.
Tab to, browse folders, open each folder in the same window, radio button

Tab again to, Click items as follows double click to open an item single
click to select, radio button checked.
Tab again to, Privacy show recently used files in quick access, check-box,

version? Maybe I'm misunderstanding your message, but I was under the
impression that you can only have one version of MB installed on your
computer at a time. Can you actually have more than one version?

I think the latest version (2.31) is reasonably accessible. After it is
launched I usually have to alt-tab to gain focus but that's about it. I'd
give the new version a shot but hang on to the 1.71 installer. I jumped back
and forth a few times before MalwareBytes became more accessible.

I’m still running Malware Bytes 1.75 free edition, but some members on other

version 2.2.1, is accessible with JAWS 16. Is anyone using this version of
Malware Bytes successfully with JAWS 16? If so,do any settings need to be

an not really usable with JAWS? Thanks for any feedback.

2016-01-28 Thread Russ Breitenstein
I had the very same problem and I called FS and was told to reinstall Jaws
from the latest build. You will have to download that from the FS website.
Don't use an older version or the one that came on your install disk. I was
told that if a dialog box appeared asking if you want to install, modify, or
repair that you take the repair option. You do not have to run the install
from a command line prompt. For me, the dialog box asking about the type of
install did not appear. Everything progressed normally and is now all OK

• The INSERT+X command, which temporarily toggles Smart Navigation, now
uses

the

• Resolved a customer reported issue with UEB translation where the "ever"
contraction was being used incorrectly in some instances.
• Resolved an issue where the dollar sign (dot 4 followed by dots 2-3-4)

not being entered as expected when typing in Unified English Braille Grade

• On the Braille Settings page in the Startup Wizard, the Placement of

JAWS detects annotations such as comments, footnotes, and endnotes in rich

• Resolved an issue with the Technology News from CNet Research It lookup

correctly.
• If JAWS is configured to start automatically at the logon screen or
after

you have logged into Windows, you can now press and hold both the ALT and

It occurs to me to share this little bit of trivia so to speak. If you wish
to go to any drive on your system directly simply open up the run dialog and
type the drive letter followed by a colon.

Another method to get to the system drive normally C: would be in the same
dialog box type a single backslash character and of course hit enter.

I typed it out in case not everybody has their punctuation turned on.

These things cross my mind every once in a while.

Here is a fix for the 64Bit iTunes that works. You will have to uninstall
iTunes first. There is an order in which iTunes should be properly
uninstalled. I will place that information below and place the link for the
fix afterwards.

Uninstalling iTunes

Steps

1.Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in
the following order. Then restart your computer.
1.iTunes
2.Apple Software Update
3.Apple Mobile Device Support
4.Bonjour
5.Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Don't uninstall these components in a different order, or only uninstall
some of them. Doing so might have unintended affects.

I truly hope I am not annoying anyone by having missed answers to my
questions that have been previously submitted.

Gave my granddaughter a nice little laptop for Christmas, and it's now time
for some software. Understanding that open office is safe, is widely used,
and is the software she has requested, I suggested that her father download
it and install it.

I may have to support her use, at least, in some measure. Is there any
experience with open office in the group?

Is there anything I can do specifically to haveJAWS work reasonably
effectively with the software?

I use jaws 12 routinely because it's tied to Jay say, but I have 14
installed here as well.

All help welcome, with both the appreciation of my granddaughter and me.

2009-06-25 Thread Russ Breitenstein
I'm stumped on that one too. Occasionally, I'll receive duplicate messages
and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why. It's not a big deal but
I'm just curious.

Hi,
Just wondering why I sometimes get 4 or 5 identical messages from this
list.

Any idea why it happens?
It's just annoying to read the same message 5 times!
Thank you for any info.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Quickenversion

2009-04-22 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Yes it can. I use the standard business size checks and they work right out
of the box. As a matter of fact, printing checks was the reason I initially
tried Money Talks. I know several of the developers at APH and they are all
visually impaired. Money Talks was develop by the blind for the blind. It is
even self-voicing so you don't even need a screen reader. No scripts, no
Jaws cursor, just get it and go.

Take care,
Russ
P.S. No, I'm not a payed spokesperson for APH.

I have been using Money Talks from the American Printing House for the
Blind (APH.org). It was designed for use with a screen reader so it is
fully accessible. After about five years I finally gave up on Quicken
because it became just too cumbersome.

Money Talks is easy to use and it does just one thing, it keeps track of
your money. Downloading bank transactions into Money Talks can be done
but not as an integrated process like Quicken. If you buy the program and
want to download transactions, let me know and I'll explain how I do it.

2009-02-04 Thread Russ Breitenstein

Karen
To alphabetize your Favorites, open Favorites and press the Down Arrow key
to get to the area you want to alphabetize. Press the Applications key
(that's the third key from the right of the space bar) and press the down
arrow key until you get to the Order By Name option. Press the Enter key and
that should do it. If you want to alphabetize the contents of a folder in
your Favorites, Open the folder and follow the same instructions.

Hope this helps,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp and Jaws 10

2008-08-26 Thread Russ Breitenstein
WinAmp did not respond for me either in Jaws 10.0 so I went into Script
Manager and re-compiled winamp.jss. That seemed to get things working again.
I remembered that there were scripts for WinAmp at the Jaws-Users website
and downloaded, installed, and compiled the scripts. That pretty much got
things back to where things were in 9.0. What is interesting is that the
scripts in Jaws 8.0 worked best of all. I tried copying them to 10.0 but got
a compile error. I did not feel like tracking down the error so I put the
10.0 scripts back for now.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MCSA

2008-05-18 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Mark
Make sure you can try before you buy if you want to go with the on-line
route. I took an on-line MCAD course (knowledgeNet) and the courseware was
completely inaccessible. The 'Office For the Blind' in my state had to hire
a reader to assist me through the courses. I earned my certification but not
without experiencing a few pitfalls.

Also, you are going to need a reader to take the exams since they are
computer administered and there is no way the examiners are going to let you
install a screen reader.

The one thing you have to consider with on-line courses is that if you get
stuck trying to understand a particular concept there will be little if any
help available to you. Whichever way you go, pick a course with plenty of
practice exams.

Good luck,
Russ

Re: [JAWS-Users] .NET SDE

2008-04-11 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Bill
There are scripts available for the Visual Studio .net programming
environment and you can download them from:
http://www.empowermentzone.com/msenv2005.zip
The scripts were written by Jamal Mazrui and several others and make Visual
Studio very usable whether it be Visual Basic, C#, or C++. You can download
the Visual Studio Express edition from Microsoft for free for any of these
languages. The scripts from Jamal work fine with either the 2005 or 2008
Express editions. Be sure to download the .net Framework library and install
it before you install any of the languages.

Jamal has a web-site that is devoted to programming called Non Visual
Development and can be found at:
http://testsite.blind-planet.com/
The site contains a wealth of information and is well worth a visit.

Hope this helps,

Can anybody on this list advise me as to the accessibility of the .NET

 - Is Visual Basic accessible via JAWS

 - Is Visual C++ accessible via JAWS

 - To what extent, if at all, are these programming tools usable by a

 - What other aspects of the .NET SDE are usable by a totally blind person
 and to what extent

NEWZ, help! I'm a little lost. What's the difference between a highway

A highway is a major public road, usually connecting towns or cities.
A skyway is an elevated highway.
A parkway is a highway with a planted strip down the middle.
An expressway or a thruway is a highway designed for high-speed traffic.
A tollway or a turnpike is an expressway that collects tolls.
If you come upon an elevated highway designed for high-speed traffic with

The Finnish word for expressway is moottoritie, by the way.

I have been using a product called Text Cloner Pro for severayl years and it
does very well for the price. It costs $100 and is designed for use with
screen readers. You can get information on it at:
http://www.readingmadeez.com/products/TextClonerPro.html
I think you can still download a 30 day trial so you can try it before you
buy.

Hope this helps,
Russ

I am using GoldWave scripts. The scripts were downloaded from the Jaws-Users
website and are the ones that include the help tutor.

I'm kind of grabbing at straws here but maybe you could go to the GoldWave
website, download another copy, and re-install the application. Can you go
to the Jaws-Users site and download a different audio editor and see if it
does the same thing?

Good luck,

Re: [JAWS-Users] help video intersept error

2008-02-12 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Yes, it's a pretty good bet that the video drivers are on the motherboard
CD. A second source would be the motherboard manufacturer's website. You'll
have to know the board's model number in order to find the latest drivers.
Keep your fingers crossed that the drivers are on the CD and that they work.

maybe would that work better just to get jaws up and running?
When I bought the computer they gave me a cd for the mother board and I

I had the same problem with a new computer that I had just built. The
problem was solved when I installed updated video drivers. I would try going
to the computer manufacturer's website for the latest drivers. This may be
tough to do if Jaws is not functioning 100 percent. I know how frustrating
this is since you think a new computer should have the latest software
installed.

Hope this helps,

Hey everyone, I was planning on eventually Upgrading from 7.1 to JAWS 9 but
first, I wanted to know how well it worked with Mozilla's Fire Fox, which is
a Free Web Browser offered by GOOGLE. I have to use Fire Fox, because my
Internet Explorer Browser doesn't work, which also causes my Media Player
not to work either, which is why I was asking about Real Player and WinAmp.
If anyone who has JAWS 9 and uses Fire Fox can help me, I'd really
Appreciate it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW 9 and I Tunes

2007-12-17 Thread Russ Breitenstein
I pretty much agree with what David has to say about iTunes. If I had to do
over again I would purchase the ZenStone rather than the Ipod Shuffle. Check
out Rick Harmon's review of the ZenStone on his website Blind-Geek-Zone.com.
It's under the audio and podcast tutorials.

As far as scripts goes, I have some simple but crude scripts that I use with
iTunes that allow me to transfer files between the iTunes library and my
Shuffle. If it weren't for iTunes being so inaccessible, the iPod Shuffle
would be great for the blind user. I think it all boils down to the
accessibility of the download service, not the player.

Take care,
Russ

I personally have nothing but bad news in relation to I-Tunes and have
found it to be completely inaccessible. I believe that it is possible to buy
some scripts but the program is so screen reader unfriendly I personally did
not want to go that route.

There are clearly some blind users who have used the I-Pod but If it is at
all possible to change your choice I would recommend the Creative Zen
Stone1GB. This is completely accessible and will play files copied across
simply with Windows Explorer with no need for irksome intermediate software.
Operation is simple and file transfers are fast.

If you want the copy protected stuff from sites like Audible.com then I
believe the more expensive option of things like the Victor Reader Stream
may be indicated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Onboard sound cards

2007-11-13 Thread Russ Breitenstein
I recently built a computer whose motherboard uses the Realtec audio
chipset. Jaws works perfectly with the on-board audio and sounds better than
the SoundBlaster Audigy sound card on my old computer. I think you'll be OK
with on-board audio adapters.
Take care,
Russ

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Onboard sound cards

I'm getting ready to buy a new computer.
On previous machines I found it necessary to install a separate sound
card to handle JAWS, since the onboard sound cards didn't seem to be
adequate.
I'm guessing that with the demands of newer computer games manufacturers
have upgraded the onboard sound cards built into the mother boards.
What is your experience with onboard sound cards?
Is there something in particular I should look for in a motherboard?
Thanks for your input.
Blessings,
Tom

If you haven't done so already, try uninstalling Jaws 6.0 and then
re-installing Jaws.
Hope this works,
Russ

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Quicken

2007-10-28 Thread Russ Breitenstein
I'm using Quicken 2007 Deluxe and Jaws 9.x and it seems to work OK. You have
to understand that I am not a heavy Quicken user so I have only scratched
the surface as to how usable 2007 is with Jaws. My wife is the primary user
of Quicken and I only go in from time to time to check the account balances.

As was noted in another post, the last version of Quicken supported by Jaws
was 2003. If I'm not mistaken, Quicken forced users to upgrade to a more
recent version since Quicken was dropping support for on-line transactions
for 2003. You might want to check this out before you buy a copy of 2003.

Hope this helps and good luck,
Russ

Re: [JAWS-Users] problum re starting jaws with alt control j

2007-10-01 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Occasionally, I have run into the same problem when setting up shortcut keys
for other applications. Just for the heck of it, why not try changing the
key combination to something different like alt + control + z. Wish I had a
better answer for you but that's the best I can come up with at the moment.

Take care,
Russ

Subject: [JAWS-Users] problum re starting jaws with alt control j

Hi all. I seem to have a problem when trying to re start jaws with alt
control j witch is the hot key I have assigned to re start jaws the problem
is when I hit it it doesn't come back up.I thought that I had this problem
fix but I was wrong. I am using Jaws 7.0 and Windows xp if any one has any
idea of why this could be happening that would be grate. when I go to check
the short cut page to see weather the key is there it is it says alt control
j to re start jaws but it just doesn't always work and I have to end up re
starting the hole pc in order to get it back again. this is quite annoying.
Many Thanks for any help that any one on hear can give me this problem
started happening a few days back. from Mich Verrier from New Liskeard

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and dual core processors

2007-07-31 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Hello
Does anyone know if Jaws takes advantage of dual core processors? Is
Jaws capable of using multi-threading?

I am building a new computer and I am trying to decide whether to use a
single or dual core processor. Any ideas or opinions would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Russ Breitenstein

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

2007-06-27 Thread Russ Breitenstein
Sue
I use the numeric keypad frequently to key longer strings of numbers
such as telephone numbers, SS numbers, or credit card numbers. I have to
tell you that I was an accountant for about 30 years so I am very used
to the numeric keypad layout.

Take care,
Russ

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

Hi all - can you tell me if there is ever a case for using the numberpad
for
number input rather than the top row of numbers? would JAWS users ever
put
the numlock on and use the numberpad?
Thanks for the help
