[JAWS-Users] Jaws error after upgrading to windows10

2016-07-30 Thread Jason Smith
Hi list, I upgraded from windows7 to windows10 back on Tuesday. I used the
FS uninstall tool prior to upgrading. Which removed my older versions of
Jaws and left me with both Jaws16 and Jaws17. For the most part Jaws does
seem to be working okay. However, I keep getting the following error
message. "the Freedom Scientific accessibility display driver is not
installed". It tells me to reboot my system(which I have tried). And it
also suggests to run a repair on Jaws. So in order to do that. I thought I
would just run the Jaws17 installer again. However, I am lost as to wear
the Jaws installer file is kept on windows10. I realise that you can also
type something into the run dialogue box to perform a repair on Jaws.
However, as far as I know. I still need to know where the installer is
saved to do this. Can anyone help me out please? Oh and for some reason. My
Jaws17 installation CD will not boot up anymore. I have heard that this is
because Windows10 no longer lets us play DVDS. Is this true? As I thought I
could just pop the CD in and run a Jaws repair that way? Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] what to do with Jaws when upgrading to windows10

2016-07-26 Thread Jason Smith
Hi list, I posted this question a few days ago, but didn't see it
appear on the list. So I am resending it. I am about to upgrade my
windows7 desktop to windows10 before the free upgrade option runs out
at the end of the month. From what i understand. We have to uninstall
all versions of Jaws etc running on our computers. Do the windows10
upgrade and then install jaws again. Is this correct? If so, how are
we meant to run the upgrade if we don't have any speech? In addition,
do we need to use the FS uninstall tool as mentioned? If so, do we run
that after uninstalling Jaws? Or do we use that to uninstall jaws? O!
and usually we get told not to choose the remove shared componants
option when uninstalling Jaws. Since they want us to remove all
versions of Jaws. Should I choose this option this time? And are there
any other things I should do when upgrading to windows10? Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] are there any special instructions regarding Jaws when upgrading to windows10

2016-07-24 Thread Jason Smith
Hi list, I am about to upgrade my windows7 desktop computer to windows10.
As the free upgrade ends at the end of this month. I have been holding off,
as wanted to wait until Jaws would properly work with Windows10. I am
currently running Jaws17. Is it true that I need to uninstall all current
versions I have on my system? If so, how am I meant to initiate the
windows10 download and install without any speech running? I believe the FS
has also made a removal tool available. Which will remove any leftover
parts of thier products. Where do I get that from? Do I really need it? And
if so, do I run that before or after I uninstall Jaws? Once again, how
would I run it if I will have no speech running? Are there any other tips I
need to know in order to have a successful upgrade? And does Jaws17 work
well with Jaws10 Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] using an alternate voice during say all

2015-06-30 Thread Jason Smith
Hi list, I am using Jaws16 on a Windows7 desktop. I downloaded one of
the premium voices from the FS website. However, I am having trouble
working out how to use the voice when doing a say all command in Jaws.
I have tried the learning tutorials for Jaws, but not had any luck. I
remember getting it to work a few years ago with an earlier version of
Jaws. But don't seem to be able to work it out now. There also used to
be a command, so you could switch between using the higher quality
voice and using eloquence. Is that still possible?
Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] how do you delete bookmarks in Mozilla. And creat folders in both I.e 11 and Mozilla

2015-03-14 Thread Jason Smith
Hi list, I have googled for the answer to my questions, but not been
able to carry out the instructions with Jaws 16. I mainly use I.E when
searching the web etc. However, my university prefers us to use
Mozilla for their webbased material etc. I am trying to delete some
bookmarks I have made using Mozilla. However, I have not been able to
do it. I would also like to know, how to be able to create folders
within both IE and Mozilla. And how to use Jaws16 to move either
bookmarks or favourites into folders within their corresponding
browser. Like I said, I have tried following google instructions, but
I haven't been able to get them to work.

Hi list, I have just rejoined this list. So are looking forward to
improving my skills in using Jaws(even though I am a long time user of
it smile). I have been having several issues with Jaws since version
 15. For example, I am currently using Jaws 16 on a Windows7 home
premium on a desktop computer. Starting with Jaws15, I have noticed
that Jaws will no longer speak to me the close icon at the top of any
programs or windows. I have confirmed with family members that the
icon is in fact showing. I have spoken to my local Freedom Scientific
distributor. But they just said. If it is there, than Jaws will read
it. But like I said, family members confirm that they can see it and
click on it. I do realize, that I can use the alt F4 command to close
a program or window. But I find that alt F4 does not always close
properly. So I like to be able to route Jaws to the PC cursor and then
left click on the close icon.

 Has anybody else experienced this?

 Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] how do you do a repair on Jaws

2011-08-30 Thread jason smith
Hi list. I have just started having a focus issue with Jaws 12 and google using
IE 8. For example. I have google as my home page when I launch IE 8. However, I
am finding that I am not able to enter any text in the search edit field of
google. I am not sure. If forms mode is not coming on properly? As even if I
press enter to manually go into forms mode? I do not always hear Jaws report
that it has come on. And yet other times it does. But I am still not able to
enter text. I have tried refreshing the page with Jaws key and escape. I have
unloaded and restarted Jaws. Still with no luck. I don't seem to have any
problem using google with Firefox. But like I said. Today the google search box
using IE8 isn't working. A family member, said that the search box does seem to
be smaller than usual. I don't know if that is relevant or not? I tried doing a
repair on Jaws 12. But I couldn't find a repair option like in earlier versions
of Jaws. I tried running the Jaws 12 installation file again. To see if that
would give me a repair option? But it reported that this version was already
found, and that the installation couldn't proceed. Is there still a repair
option in Jaws 12? Or can anyone help resolve my issue regarding the edit box
in google?

Thanks Jason
P.S I am using XP home

no the settings are still the same as they are with 11. The only thing
that's different with 12 is you have to go to your settings center under
your utillities menue. I hope this helps. One of my friend's name Angel

Hi list. In the past. I made use of the option in Jaws. That lets you
specify one of the real speak voices. To be used in the say all command
in Jaws. Which then automatically switches back to eloquence for normal
navigation etc. However, I turned that feature off quite some time ago. I
now wish to turn it back on. I followed the steps for doing so. As
outlined in the Jaws training tutorial. However, I don't seem to be able
to get it to work again. I am using Jaws 12. Are the real speak voices,
no longer included as part of the Jaws installation? Is that where I am
going wrong? As I only have the one software CD for Jaws 12. That was
sent to me.

[JAWS-Users] stopping Jaws from saying space marker

2011-08-12 Thread jason smith
Hi list. I have a couple of files for my course. I am finding, that Jaws is
saying space marker a lot. It is almost after every word. It is also saying
paragraph marker at times too. I haven't experienced this with previous files.
It makes reading the text rather awkward. Is there a setting I can change to
stop this?
I am using Jaws 12 on a XP home system. And I am using word 2003. Although, I
think some of the files may originally have been PDF documents.

Hi Patti. If you are referring to the latest youtube to mp3 converter? I
think that is also the version that I just upgraded too a few days ago. Jaws
doesn't seem to read the options as well as it did in the last version. When
you tab through the options? After pasting in the URL of the youtube video
you want to convert. There is a list. In which you can choose the format to
which you want to convert the video into. I notice now, you can choose
between: OG, Wave, MP4 and MP3. Perhaps, you have it set to MP4? and this is
causing your trouble?

Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the best way to uninstall previousversions of Jaws

2011-06-13 Thread jason smith
That's what I was thinking? I decided to uninstall the oldest version first.
And then work forward. Because, when we install a new version? We then
uninstall the older one. So I figured, working from oldest to newest may be
the way to go. In my case, it meant uninstalling Jaws 5.0. Yes that old a
version. My desktop is 8 years old smile. I chose to leave the shared
components. I then had the Human voice talking installer come up. It said
that I needed to restart my computer to continue. However, when I did this?
I had both an option to install with speech or without it? Thought this
weird as I was trying to uninstall. I ended up in this loop of restarting my
computer. It was only by pressing alt F4 to get rid of the prompt. I was
then presented with the options to: modify, repair or uninstall Jaws. This
sounded more better. However, when my computer restarted this time? I had no
speech. I thought maybe my hotkeys had been removed with the uninstall. But
a family member said. That I had a blue screen saying something about the
byos I think? I rebooted and had my family member press F8 to bring up the
safe mode menu. We chose to restart in the last best known configuration.
This got Jaws and windows back to normal. However, when I uninstalled Jaws
6.0? I had the same problem happen all over again. Why would doing a simple
uninstall of Jaws cause all this trouble? And can I avoid it with the next
uninstall?

You will find an option to check for updates. If you select that option.

Sometimes doing a shift enter will activate the link instead of the usual
enter on its own. Doing an insert F7 to bring up a list of links and
entering on the link that way, also works sometimes too. Is very weird and
frustrating though I do agree.

Best wishes Jason

Re: [JAWS-Users] A question about a hotkey

2010-02-01 Thread jason smith

Hi Maria,
sometimes when the Jaws find command doesn't work. I do an insert F7 to
bring up a list of links on the page. And then use the letter P to skip down
to the previous page link. Or the letter N to skip down to the next page
link. They are often at the bottom of the links list anyway. But this is not
always the case. So pressing the corresponding letters I just mentioned can
help.

Hope that gives you another option.

Best wishes Jason

Hi Kim,
well I managed to find out, that the tutorials were done by Erin Edgar for

[JAWS-Users] where do we go to check our licensing count

2009-11-17 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have been running Jaws 7 on my notebook, as it has windows ME, and that is
the last version of Jaws to support that OS. It has been running fine for
years. However, it has just reverted to running in 40 minute demo mode. I got
an error message something to do with authorization. I don't know why this has
suddenly started happening. I am wondering if I am going to have to reregister
that version of Jaws? I have just installed Jaws 11. And I have a feeling, that
my Jaws licensing count(or whatever it is called) may be low, or even down to
zero. My question is, where do we go to have our reactivation count restored?
And does anyone remember, if it is the authorization disk from Jaws 6 that we
use to register Jaws 7? I don't think ILM registration was in use then was it?

If anyone has any idea why my version of Jaws 7 reverted to demo mode, I would
look forward to knowing it?

Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] what is the best way to navigate a bus timetable using Jaws

2009-09-21 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I sometimes go to our local public transport website, in order to check bus
times and routes etc. Sometimes using the site search function. I am able to
get the information I need. However, there are also a number of times when I
wish to access the specific timetable for the bus or route I am interested in.
I haven't had a lot of practice in reading such timetables using Jaws Are there
any commands or tips that would make navigating such timetables easier?
I particularly want to be able to check what time the bus will arrive or leave
from the stops I am interested in?

Hi Fina,
If you can print this out yourself and enlarge the font a bit in Ms-Word,
Notepad or Wordpad, the commands are all in the JFw help system.

If your JFw runs in the system tray press JawsKeyPlusJ followed by h,
then

k.

If not:
Alt plus tab to the Jaws Window, alt plus h followed by K.

From there you select the book you want in the tree view (expanding the

books with the right arrow or collapsing them with left arrow).
press enter on the book you choose and then F6.
This brings you to a web page containing lists of keystrokes which you
can

copy to your clipboard.
You press F6 again to get back to the tree view where you can pick
another

book of commands to print out.
You can append subsequent lists to the clipboard with WindowsKeyPlusC and
build yourself quite a nice reference sheet of keyboard commands.

[JAWS-Users] problem with Jaws announcing favourites when not meant to

2009-07-21 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
for the past week or so, I have had an unusual issue with Jaws. For example,
whenever I launch Internet Explorer. Jaws announces favorites. I don't think
I remember it ever doing this before. In addition, when I open a webpage. I
usually use insert numpad 3 to read the status line. This lets me know how many
items on the page are left to download. However, what Jaws tends to do now, is
read out a couple of my favorites. However, if I do in fact want to access my
favorites. I still need to use control I to bring up my favorites list. Has
anyone else experienced this? I am using XP home, IE7 and Jaws 10. Would
upgrading to IE8 be of any help? It is sitting in my system tray. But I have

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with Jaws announcing favourites when notmeantto

Hi John,
already tried that. But all I get is a bit of a bong noise. I usually can
also just press escape, and that takes me back to google. But now I am
having to alt F4 out of it altogether. And like I said, when I open a
webpage, control numpad 3 is reporting my favorites rather than the status
line. I am wondering if this problem is the reason why pages are so slow

Do you or anyone else have any suggestions?

You probably hit the control/alt key immediately to the right of the space
bar at the same time as the letter I.

ctrl/alt + I toggles between insert and overtype modes so hitting the same
key combination should switch you back. Jaws normally announces this
change, although it might not in some verbosity settings.

Hi list,
today I was typing up something in MS word 2003. After having been typing
for a while, I had something odd happen. Instead of any texts I began
typing, being inserted infront of the character I was typing at. It
deleted that character and replaced it with the one I just typed. Years
ago, this used to be referred to as type over mode. I didn't even know it
still existed. I have no idea how I turned it on. But how do I turn it
off, and get it back to inserting the character I type, rather than
typing over any existing text?

[JAWS-Users] how do I turn off type over mode in word 2003

2009-07-15 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
today I was typing up something in MS word 2003. After having been typing for a
while, I had something odd happen. Instead of any texts I began typing, being
inserted infront of the character I was typing at. It deleted that character
and replaced it with the one I just typed. Years ago, this used to be referred
to as type over mode. I didn't even know it still existed. I have no idea how I
turned it on. But how do I turn it off, and get it back to inserting the
character I type, rather than typing over any existing text?
I am using XP home, Jaws 10 and Ms word 2003 like I said.

Thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] problems getting my Jaws 10 hotkey to stick

2009-06-28 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have Jaws 10 on my desktop. I installed it quite some time ago. I have tried
setting up a hotkey for it. However, the hotkey doesn't seem to want to work.
When entering the hotkey I want of control alt 0. I shift tab away from the
field. And then tab back to make sure the information I entered is there.
However, when I finish the process, and then try the hotkey, nothing happens. I
had the same problem with Jaws 9. But don't remember what I did to make it work.
Does anyone have any ideas?
thanks Jason.S I have also recently installed the latest Jaws 10 update too.
But that didn't have any effect.

Hi Jason,
After you assign the hotkey, do not shift tab.
Instead, tab until you come to the apply button, and spacebar that.
Then, tab thru the dialogue, and see if your shortcut key is still there,
if it is, tab to okay, and spacebar that.

[JAWS-Users] how do you stop Jaws reporting margins in word

2009-06-12 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have a text book in a folder of its own. Within which is contained the
individual chapters of the book. I am finding that Jaws is telling me how far
the margin is set from the left and right side of the page. This is both when
reading line by line, and also when using the say all command.
This has only just started happening with this book. However, other word
files read fine.
Is there a way I can stop this? I am using Jaws 10, XP home and Word 2003.

thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] trouble getting Jaws to start automatically

2009-05-19 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I did a system restore on my Desktop. Afterwards, I found that Jaws 10 had
stopped loading automatically at start up.
I found the Jaws 10 icon on my desktop and pressed enter. I then went into
options and then basics. I checked the run Jaws automatically check box.
However, when I reboot my computer, I find Jaws 9 came up. Am I following the
correct steps to get Jaws 10 to start automatically?
P.S Jaws 10 was starting automatically before the system restore.

[JAWS-Users] fs clipboard not appending all of selected text

2009-02-22 Thread jason smith
Hi list
I experienced a problem with the FS clipboard tonight. For example, I have an
article on a webpage I want to copy. However, you have to keep clicking a link,
in order to go to the next page of the article. I am therefore forced to copy
the article page by page, rather than in one whole block. I do control A to
select the whole of the current showing page. Jaws reports selected as usual.
I then do a windows key plus c to copy the selected page to the clipboard. Jaws
reports appended to clipboard as usual. I continue on doing all forty plus
pages of the article. However, when I paste the text into a new word file. I
only have pages from about 32 onwards. And yes, I did do control C to copy the
first page, before then using windows C to copy all subsequent pages.
This has happened to me a couple of times before. Has anyone else experienced
this? I am using Jaws 10, Xp home and word 2003.

thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 not reading emails automatically

2009-01-15 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I am using Jaws 10 with outlook express on a desktop with XP home.
Since installing Jaws 10, I have noticed that Jaws doesn't always automatically
read my emails. For example, I will often skip through a lot of emails, by,
having Jaws start reading an email. If I am not interested in it, I press
delete to skip to the next email and do the same. Usually when you press
delete, Jaws will automatically start reading the next email. With Jaws 10
however, it does not always do so, or it is very slow in starting to read the
next message. If I go back to Jaws 9 however, Jaws goes back to being very
snappy in starting the next email after pressing delete on the previous one.
Has anyone else experienced this?

2008-10-05 Thread jason smith

Hi Marilyn
the course I did was run by a blindness organization where I live down here
in Australia. It was only for 1 hour one day a week for a few months or so(I
think it was). However, it was a one on one course-which was of course very
good. And better still, it was free. At the time, I did not have access to
Jaws at home. Therefore, I would not always remember everything I had learnt
from the one hour class the week before. The training was really aimed at
just getting you up and started with Jaws, and in giving you a feel as to
what functions are possible. Such as: editing and formatting a document.
Using Mail merge and printing envelopes etc. The latter two, I have
forgotten most of though. So that will be a topic for future list questions
I will have smile.

Best wishes Jason

Hi Marilyn,
you weren't being picky. Your comment was a valid one. It isn't any good
throwing commands at someone, if they aren't already familiar with the
keyboard etc. Being on this list, makes me appreciate the short course
introducing me to Jaws that I received. At the time, I thought it not
extensive enough. I now know, that some people don't even have access to
that.

You always have good input on the list, so keep it up.

P.S not sure if you know yet, but pressing Jaws key plus function key 10,
will bring up a list of the applications or windows you have open. Just
arrow up and down and press enter on what you want. This can be helpful, if

[JAWS-Users] FS clipboard problem

2008-07-03 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have been experiencing an annoying problem when using the Jaws extended
clipboard feature. For example, I had several large blocks of text which I
wanted to copy into a separate word file. After selecting the first block of
text, I did the usual control C copy command. Jaws reported that the text was
copied to the clipboard. I then selected the next block of text. This time, I
did the append to clipboard command of windows key followed by c for copy. Jaws
reported appended to clipboard as usual. I continued on doing the same for
the other blocks of text. However, when I pasted the text into the new word
file, I found that some of the blocks of text were missing. I had no problem
with this feature in resent days. Has anyone experienced this?
I am using Jaws 9, word 2003 and XP home.

[JAWS-Users] files appearing empty in my documents but read fine when accessed through word

2008-06-29 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have had a strange problem the past few days. I have some files containing my
study assignments for uni. Since I wanted to have 2 or 3 documents opened at
the same time, I opened them through my documents. This meant I could just
shift tab back to the list of files, and arrow down to the next I wanted,
rather than going through the open dialogue in word. However, when I open the
files, Jaws reads as if the documents are empty. However, if I launch word from
the start menu, control O and shift tab into the list of files, and open them
there, Jaws reads the contents fine. I haven't been able to get anyone to
confirm for me, if the text actually appears when I open them through my
documents though. If the text isn't appearing, then Jaws will in fact be
reporting things correctly. Does anyone know though, why the same files would
read differently when opened through my documents?

Hi Paul,

was taken out of the menu. However, when I went back in, my hotkey was
there, and I just tabbed to okay and was done. Interestingly though, by
using enter, the apply button disappeared. But the procedure still worked,

 Hi Jason and list,

I found the same hot key problem on moving up to version 9.

Using the same method as you, except for hitting the apply button,
attaching a hot key has worked fine since Jaws 3.3.

With version 9 though, I found that if I simply pressed the 9, then
continued around to the ok button, without going back to check that the
control + alt had been added, then it stuck.

The installation process went fine for me.

Hi Jason, I also find that I cannot do this with JAWS. I have to unload
JAWS, run Window Eyes, and perform the operation. Then the hot key will
stick, and I can then unload WE and run JAWS using the new hot key. This
has been the case with JAWS for as long as I can remember, and it is not
 machine specific either.

 Hi list,
I just got around to installing my copy of Jaws 9 on my desktop. I had
to request a new disk copy from FS, as the original one mailed to me
wasn't working. I finally got Jaws 9 installed. I did notice that Jaws
was a bit sluggish during installation. For example, wouldn't always
announce things like press enter or the spacebar to continue etc. In
addition(unlike previous versions) I wasn't prompted to install the
training materials until after I had finished the installation and asked
to reboot. The problem I am now having, is making a hotkey to start Jaws
stick. What I am doing is as follows. 1 go to desktop and find Jaws 9. 2
press context key. 3 arrow up once and enter on properties. 4 tab to the
define new hotkey section.5 type the number 9. 6 tab and shift tab to
check that it reads control alt 9 for the hotkey. 7 tab to the apply
button and press enter or spacebar. 8 tab to the okay button. 9 reboot
the computer, to make sure the change has taken effect. However, when I
do insert F4 to unload Jaws and then try the hotkey, nothing happens.
However, my old hotkey of control alt J for Jaws 8, obviously still
works. Have I missed a step somewhere, or am I doing something else
 wrong?
 thanks Jason

I just got around to installing my copy of Jaws 9 on my desktop. I had to
request a new disk copy from FS, as the original one mailed to me wasn't
working. I finally got Jaws 9 installed. I did notice that Jaws was a bit
sluggish during installation. For example, wouldn't always announce things like
press enter or the spacebar to continue etc. In addition(unlike previous
versions) I wasn't prompted to install the training materials until after I had
finished the installation and asked to reboot. The problem I am now having, is
making a hotkey to start Jaws stick. What I am doing is as follows. 1 go to
desktop and find Jaws 9. 2 press context key. 3 arrow up once and enter on
properties. 4 tab to the define new hotkey section.5 type the number 9. 6 tab
and shift tab to check that it reads control alt 9 for the hotkey. 7 tab to
the apply button and press enter or spacebar. 8 tab to the okay button. 9
reboot the computer, to make sure the change has taken effect. However, when I
do insert F4 to unload Jaws and then try the hotkey, nothing happens. However,
my old hotkey of control alt J for Jaws 8, obviously still works. Have I missed
a step somewhere, or am I doing something else wrong?
thanks Jason

 Hi list,
Is Jaws 8 able to be used okay with Yahoo messenger? I think I remember a

Jason, I just wanted to let you know that I didn't forget your question

Then I am going to kick back for a while at least a little bit any way.

Re: [JAWS-Users] having trouble with start page of avg

2007-12-30 Thread jason smith
Hi Orhan and Chris,
yes I know that a lot of people use avg without any trouble, but for some
reason it isn't working as should for me. Yes Orhan, it was the same pod
cast we both listened to. Thanks for your tip about using the space bar. The
problem is, I am not getting any of those buttons(or any others for that
matter) showing up. I have tried tabbing. I have also routed the pc cursor
to Jaws, but do not find any buttons. Jaws does confirm that it is avg 7.5
free that I am using. The only thing Jaws reads is a lot of unnamed
graphics. It reports my last scan and last update as yesterday, which is
when I installed it. As far as I know though, no such scan has been done. It
then talks about things like premium updates not being available. This makes
sense, as it is only the free version and not the paid one. It then gives a
rundown as to why it is worth upgrading to the paid version. That is all
that Jaws reads to me on the screen after I launch avg from my desktop.
Something else I notice, is that when I installed avg, I was asked to create
a start window folder. However, I don't have an avg shortcut icon in my
start menu. Avg also does not show up in my system tray, and yet I think the
manual or the podcast said it would be there.
Does anyone have any solutions, short of reinstalling AVG?
thanks Jason

 no me neither.
the demo you are talking about was from blind cool tech? a little while
 ago.
yeah, I listened to that, how ever, in the paid version there is a
 advanced
 interface.
however, this does not apply to the free version.
also, you have to press space bar on a button - enter won't work for some
 weird reason.
 well at least for me.
oh yeah if you want to scan for viruses, you need to press spacebar on the
 test centre button.
I am also running jaws on a XP machine and having no difficulties what so
 ever.

Hi, I've not had any problems using the free AVG with both JAWS 8 and

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading bold, italic, underline

2007-12-24 Thread jason smith
Hi David,
this is handy to know, as I too sometimes copy and paste information from
different sources. What I usually do, is when I have finished cutting and
pasting, I do a control A to select the whole document. I then go into the
format menu and select my font choice and then save my document with the new
changes. This helps to make sure my whole document has the same font all
throughout the document. Do you know though, does my method also remove the
original underlining and centreing etc? I always do such formatting after
completing my document.
thanks Jason

Wally is right about applying aliases but what I find easiest is to paste
text into Word without formatting. This way I do not have to worry about any
bold, underlines or italics other people may have entered and I can start
to apply my own formatting without having to search through for errant
underlines etc. I tend to copy and replace my text with unformatted text at
the end of editing the entire document as this will remove all formatting .
.
The last thing I do before printing or sending a document is then to apply
my own formatting confident that nothing else will be there.

In Word 2003 to paste unformatted text rather than formatted text press alt
E to go to edit menu then press S for Paste special and finally U for
unformatted text. Finally press enter and unformatted text will be pasted.

This feature should also be in Word 2007 but I am not sure if this key
sequence will work the same.

Once you get used to pressing this key sequence it's a very quick method.

Regards

David Griffith

Hi, Sharon!

Go to configuration manager.
Go to view options.
Go to voicealiases.
And there you can modify.
If you want for all applications, you can hit ctrl+shift+d, and so the first

I want to be able to proof documents where bold, italic, and underline
accidently get included because I'm cutting and copying text from other
people within my document. How can I get JFW to routinely read me this
information all the time in MSWord?
I am placing a test document below the question.
In this document, I use underline, bold, and italic, first on their own
lines, and then all on one line.

But all I here is something about heading style.

 All,

As we get nearer to the release of JAWS 9, one of the things we create
to go with the product is a DAISY book on what's new in the version.
This book installs from the Program CD when you get it and you can
review this DAISY Book with the FS Reader Demo product that is used to
do all the training material shipped with JAWS.

We also provide mp3 files for most of our training material if you would
like to listen to it on the go and today, we posted the mp3 version of
the What's New recording on the JAWS headquarters page. If you'd like to
give it a listen, you can download it now from:
 http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_products/JAWS_HQ.asp

[JAWS-Users] Norton scan of instant messages

2007-12-17 Thread jason smith
HI list,
I have Norton internet security 2006 on my computer. MY subscription is long
expired, and I am thinking of uninstalling it and begin using AVG free. I got a
message on booting up my computer, saying something like, Norton message scan
could not start up, and so Norton can not scan incoming instant messages for
threats to your computer. Firstly, can viruses come in MSN instant messages?
Secondly, does AVG free do a similar scan of instant messages? I didn't know
that norton did such a scan.
thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 9 disk wont boot up

2007-12-15 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
got my Jaws 9 disk yesterday. However, when trying to install it, the program
wont boot up when I put it in my D drive. I tried it several times. I made sure
it was the right way up. I restarted my computer with the disk in the drive, as
this sometimes gets the disks to start loading. I have gone into My computer
and clicked on drive D, but it reports no items available. Does anyone know
what I can do to get it to load? Other disks boot up fine. I only received one
Jaws 9 disk, and it does have replacement written on it. I therefore take it
that it is not the bad batch which went out earlier.
Thanks for your help

[JAWS-Users] how do you do attachments in word 2003

2007-11-30 Thread jason smith
Hi list, having some trouble in doing attachments in MS word 2003. I have done
some test ones, as haven't done them for a while. I have tried two methods, but
no luck. For example, while in a new message, I select insert and then email
attachment. I can find the look in box. I have that set to look in my
documents. I get the file name dialogue box. I also get the list of my files.
However, if I enter on the file I want nothing happens. Similarly, if I tab to
the attach button and hit it nothing happens. My second method, was to open the
word file, go to the file menu, down to send to and choose attachment or mail
recipient whatever it says. I then enter the email address, the subject and a
message. I then do alt S to send it. However, i only end up with the email, but
no attachment.
What am I doing wrong? I am using XP, Jaws 8.0 and outlook express
thanks Jason

2007-11-25 Thread jason smith
Hi Sarah, had a listen to some of your tutorials. However, I didn't come
across, how to change my status from online, to offline or busy etc. In your
tutorial on setting up an account(I think it was), I heard a status option.
However, I have been unable to find it.

 Hi list,
I installed skype not long ago. I haven't yet tried making or receiving

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and Java

2007-10-26 Thread jason smith
hi list, I was getting some help from my uni's I.T helpdesk. He was able to
help me get what I wanted done. However, when checking my settings for the
university website, a browser check found, that Java was not being found by my
browser which is I.E 7. He gave me the link from which to download the Java
program. However, I remember that Jaws has trouble with Java. He said that the
uni site, makes a lot of use of Java. I didn't want to install Java and stuff
up Jaws. I do have the Java access bridge installed on my system I think, and
have done for a few years. Is there a new access bridge I need to install? Will
I give myself too much grief, if I install this Java program? Is there anything
else, I need to install or do in order to maximize the use of Jaws with Java?

[JAWS-Users] is livewire accessible with Jaws

2007-10-18 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
a friend of mine uses a thing called livewire to download music from the net
onto her MP3 player. Does anyone know if it is accessible to use with Jaws? I
think it is a website on which you use their software to download the music,
but I am not sure. I heard about this a long time ago, but didn't get around to
trying it out. I had a quick look using google, and there seems to be a lot
about it. I would be interested to hear from anyone who is using it with Jaws.

[JAWS-Users] error message when installing skype

2007-09-28 Thread jason smith
Hi David,
I installed the skype scripts okay. However, when I ran the skype-setup file, I
got the error message this is not a valid win32 application(or something like
that). What can I do about this?
Thanks Jason
P.S when I chose to have the skype scripts recompiled, I was taken back to a
blank screen. Should I have received a Jaws prompt saying compiling completed
or something?

[JAWS-Users] what is the latest verssion of skype

2007-09-27 Thread jason smith
Hi David, on the list's home page you have alink for the latest version of
Skype. when clicking on this link, I don't think it tells you what the version
is. Do you know what number this version is? I want to make sure I name it for
future reference. In addition, in your scripts section, you have scripts for
skype titled number 504. Are these the ones for this latest version of Skype?
If so, I take it that they are not self-installing ones, as you haven't labeled
them as such unlike some others, am I right? I am still quite nervous when it
comes to installing scripts. I plan on using your audio tutorial on the subject
though.

Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the latest verssion of skype

2007-09-27 Thread jason smith
Thanks David,
so if I name the skype file 5.0 that should cover it then do you think? It's
just so I don't confuse files later. So I take it then, that as far as you
know(I do note as far as you know), the scripts on the home page are okay
with the version of skype on that latest version of skype link. One last
question from a basic user. If the scripts are self installing,, do we still
need to place them in any particular location, before opening the file?
thanks Jason

It is 3.5x something or another. I'm not sure of the exact build. I
 suppose
I should make that indication on the scripts page that all of the skype
scripts up there are self installing in fact. That link points to the
 skype
home page for the latest version no matter what it might happen to be at

[JAWS-Users] how do you add to address book

2007-09-19 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
how do you add someone's email address to the address book/contacts in outlook
express? My spam filter in Norton internet security has been regarding
someone's emails as spam and putting them in the spam folder. I only just found
out about this problem. I couldn't understand why I was not getting some of
their emails. In addition, this person says they always write to me from the
same email address. I always use their email address which I already have in my
address book. I always get these messages back ok.
However, their emails which are being seen as spam, have a different email
address, to those emails I do get okay. I checked this by doing a control F3 to
read the return path for the email. Is it possible for my system to somehow
change their address? The person says they always use the address I have in my
address book. However, this is not what I find by doing control F3.
I think though, the spam address, is another address they do have. The person
is one of my uni lecturers and was beginning to question my study ability,
because I wasn't getting some of his emails and so not receiving some important
study information.
thanks a lot

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and new version of MSN

Hi list,
when logging into MSN messenger, I got a prompt that a new version of MSN was
available. When I chose to download it, I got the usual prompt of do I want to
run the file or not. The file is titled Windows Live Messenger. From what I
have heard, this program allows you to communicate with friends even if they
are not using MSN. Is anyone else using windows live? If so, how accessible
with Jaws is it, or am I better off staying with the current version of MSN? I
am using XP home, with Jaws 8.0.

[JAWS-Users] using Jaws with blackboard system

2007-08-30 Thread jason smith
Hi list, especially those uni students on the list. I have been having a lot of
problems accessing my uni website for my Psychology studies. The uni has began
using a thing called blackboard learning system. it uses some Java and so
obviously gives Jaws problems. Have any of the students on list been able to
master this system. I am able(with a lot of use of the Jaws cursor), able to
get into things I need to, but it is very time consuming. Have spoken to the
I.T guys at the uni. They help as much as they can, but they even say it is a
problem even for students in general, not just with Jaws.
Any tips will be helpful.
thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] how do you fast forward and rewind in windows media player

2007-07-29 Thread jason smith
Hi list, I am having a problem with windows media player. I am trying to work
out how to pause, fast forward and rewind when listening to something with
windows media player on my desktop. For example, I like to listen to podcasts
such as that on Blind Cool tech etc. I sometimes listen to these several times,
especially those which give instructional information I want to follow. I did
an incert H to look at the hot keys for the program. Using alt S will stop the
podcast. Alt P will start playing it again. However, it starts from the start
of the podcast. If I have already listened to the podcast before, I may want to
skip forward to the secttion I want. Using the hotkey of alt F doesn't seem to
do anything. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Being able to pause, fast
forward and rewind, will be very handy when trying to follow David's very
helpfull tutorials. At moment, I often use a hand recorder to do the job. I am
using windows XP home, Jaws 8 Pro and windows media 10 I think it is, but not
sure.

[JAWS-Users] setting up AVG

2007-07-20 Thread jason smith
Hi David and list, my Norton 2006 subscription ran out about a month ago. I am
aware that Norton 2007 is not accessible with Jaws. I have also heard that
Norton might be causing some issues that I have with using MS word 2003. This
and that Norton is quite a memory hog, has made me think of trying AVG. I have
downloaded AVG 7.5 free from David's site. Before I install it, I have some
questions. Is this the most resent version of AVG? Does AVG free come with a
firewall? Will it also automatically scan in coming and out going email? In
coming is obviously the most important. I haven't uninstalled Norton yet. I
know that I can use the uninstall program from the Symantec site. If I turn off
all of the running Norton programs, will it be okay for me to go ahead and
install AVG? If Norton is turned off, I assume that there shouldn't be any
conflict, am I right? Lastly, is there anything I need to be aware of when
installing AVG to run with Jaws. There was no mention of scripts being needed
on David's site.
thanks for your help

[JAWS-Users] Jaws cutting off lines

2007-07-04 Thread jason smith
Hi list, I have noticed an issue with Jaws over the last month. When reading
word documents, web pages and emails etc Jaws leaves off words at the end of
lines. This is only when doing a read all command. When reading paragraph by
paragraph, or line by line, it reads everything. I have checked the margins. I
have maximized the screen. I have view set to normal or page layout I think it
is. I have just downloaded the Jaws update, using the automatic Jaws update
feature. I heard someone on list say that the update helped fix their reading
issue. Is there anything else i can do? Sure I can get by going paragraph by
paragraph, however, I have a lot of reading to do for my course. I am using
Jaws Pro 8.0 and Windows XP, word 2003 and I.E 6.
thanks Jason

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS-Excel documents looking like crap.

2007-06-28 Thread jason smith
Hi Bill,
I have been told that I need to turn on macros in order to use some files
for my studies. Do you know how to do this using Jaws? I have also heard
that macros can be dangerous for computers etc. Do you know if this is true
and if there are any precautions I should take?
thanks a lot
Jason

Larry, I have to prepare spreadsheets for Greensuiters who like
everything color-coded, I.e. Green for success, red for failed, yellow for
expected to succeeed. If that's what you're doing, it is possible to
write macros to change color on a given selected cell. I'm not a hundred
percent sure of this but I believe you can select all in your spreadsheet,
then pick a font, or color if you want, and in theory, it should all be
 sized propperly.
 Hope this helps.

 .Hi Folks,
 .
.I am crafting a business plan and much of the financial
.analysis information needs to be placed in to an Excel
 .format.
.Jaws works wonderfully filling out the various cells
.however, when I print it out much of the data is hidden,
.columns don't line up, text is so small as to make it
.virtually impossible to read and the text that is visible
.doesn't conform with my font and color settings.
 .
.I have read through the Jaws help, John Wilson's Excel
.tutorial and one from Cathy Ann Mertha of Access
.Technology Institute and I still can't seem to make the damn
 .thing work.
 .
.Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

[JAWS-Users] error with Skype set up

2007-06-25 Thread jason smith
Hi David,
I downloaded the Skype software from your webpage using the latest version of
skype link. When trying to run the program, I got an error message that the
program is not a valid Win.ex program or something like that. I have never
installed Skype before, so not sure if I have done anything wrong. The download
only says skype setup so I don't know what the version number is. Can you
suggest anything?
thanks Jason

[JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading all of text on a line

2007-06-01 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
over the past few days, Jaws has begun not reading properly. When doing a read
all, Jaws reads through the text, but leaves off some words at the end of each
line. I have not changed margins, or changed any Jaws verbosity or any other
settings. This is happening everywhere i.e emails, WebPages etc. I also notice
that sometimes when in an email, Jaws will begin reading and then stop.
However, when I check the cursor position, it has jumped to the bottom of the
email. If I go line by line everything is fine. Same too, if I read paragraph
by paragraph. Interestingly though, if I use the sappy voices read-all it reads
properly, but not when using eloquence. Does anyone have any ideas what I have
done, if anything?
thanks Jason
