Re: [JAWS-Users] JAVA
There may be some confusion here. Access Bridge is now part of the Java download. If you installed it separately, you may have overridden the current version. Separately, a thread on this list a month or two ago went into the risks of installing Java and its negligible value to JAWS users. Of course, you may have other reasons for needing Java. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of HICKS, Steven (ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS NHS TRUST) Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2017 2:57 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAVA Thanks, managed to find a good article on the web and it also gives a command line to turn it on and off but stupidly, I didn't bookmark that page. Hi Adrian, Well, it didn't take me but a couple of hours before I uninstalled Java. After installing it I noticed that accessing websites that I use regularly were loding much slower, & my computer was taking longer to reboot or start. So Revo & I yanked that sucker out by its roots! Now, websites are back to loading normally, & my computer is start & restarting normally as well. Take care. Mike Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers! Re: [JAWS-Users] Java & Jaws
There's always a problem it seems. I'm curious? How many sites or applications do JAWS users encounter that require JAVA? I know there a lot of on-line gaming sites that need it to run their plug-ins. For your own needs is it really worth the risks? I mean if Google has taken steps to stop certain programs from appearing on their search engine, there must be a serious problem. Believe other well known sites have also followed suit. I would just avoid installing them completely, unless I had full flexibility to enable them on a site by site basis. That's what using FireFox will give you. That's why I have Adobe Flash installed only on FireFox. Some important sites I use haven't switched their web players to the new HTML 5 format, thus I have to use Adobe Flash to access their content. Hi Adrian, Well, my 1st install was from, Ninite, but after enabling the Access Bridge I got an error message, & also after rebooting. Come to find out, the Ninite installer installed both 32 & 64 bit versions. So, I uninstalled them both, made sure all Oracle / Java folders were gone from everywhere I could think of, cleaned my system with CCleaner, & finally reinstalled with an installer I got from Oracle's website. I enabled the Access Bridge, no error messages, rebooted, & no error messages, so I think we gotter whipped. Thanks much. Take care. Mike Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers! You're absolutely correct. Both JAVA and Adobe Flash are on everyone's hit list for having way too many security vulnerabilities. It's best you avoid installing them. You get more flexibility installing Adobe Flash on FireFox for you can enable it's use on a site by site basis. They may have the same option for JAVA. At 05:40 PM 4/14/2017, you wrote: Hi Mike. [JAWS-Users] java and jaws
Hi, everyone, I enjoyed reading the info about Java. I always thought it was necessary to keep it up because of how they are doing websites these days, but now Hans says that it isn't and I am confused. Could someone please update me on Java, what it now does and what is necessary? When I wrote that post about a certain site jumping around I was wondering if it had anything to do with Java not being updated, but maybe that's not the case anymore. Thanks in advance. [JAWS-Users] Java solves an Internet problem
I posted a query a few weeks ago about my inability to locate any buttons on a certain webpage that other JAWS users could access with ease. FS's Dennis Godin has solved the problem, and I think it's worth posting the solution. Some time ago, the federal government issued a warning about security lapses in Java, and I removed it from my system. Today, Dennis godin encouraged me to reinstall it. A quick Google check assured me that the security problems have been fixed, so I went ahead. One nice thing for those of us who tied ourselves in knots installing and activating early versions of Java Access Bridge, which screenreaders need, is that JAB is now incorporated into Java. You still have to change a setting in the Ease of Access Center, but it's a simple task. Between Java and the JAWS insert-escape refresh command, I can now access the webpage that annoyed me for a month. Below I'm copying the link to the Java download page and the link to FS's Java and JAB installation instructions. Note that when downloading Java, you're encouraged to accept an Amazon and other features that I, for one, don't want cluttering my system, so be sure to tab through each option as you go through the installation process. Also, as frequently mentioned on this list, I suggest saving the file and running it from your system instead of running it from the website. [JAWS-Users] java update and yahoo
This really annoyed me, there was a java update that I installed. During the process I thought I unchecked to add the yahoo search. When the update was complete, not only was the yahoo search installed the first start page was replaced with a yahoo.com page. I had to locate and remove the yahoo search and in internet options delete the first link and replace it with the weather page that I use. So make sure that the install yahoo search is unchecked, or you will lose your start up page. --- Please visit my web page It’s motivational, inspirational with a touch of humor There is also a very extensive resource list for the blind http://www.LennyMcHugh.com International Brotherhood of Magicians member #43990R For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] java feature
Folks, Unless you need this, it is extremely unwise to use it. It is a big-time security risk. I haven't used nor seen a need for this in several years. Don't get Java Run-time fron Sun Systems confused with the Adobe Java Flash plug-in, which is completely different. You may need Adobe Flash for some websites and to play certain content. Even there, though, you can often enable html5 in your browser and avoid the need to use Adobe Flash. Adobe Flash often has been getting updates on a weekly basis because of security flaws as well. So, only enable it for those websites where it is necessary. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAVA ACCESS Bridge
Hi Hans, Your instructions were great! I then found a Java web page dedicated to Access Bridge. After reading what Access Bridge does, I wonder how I survived without it all this time. I find it most strange that JAWS does not make an automated check, and if Access Bridge is not activated, JAWS does that itself or at least notifies the user. Thanks very much! If you want to install a program, the easiest way to proceed is in the search window (Win 7 has the window at the top of the start menu, not sure where you'll find it on Win8). Type uninstall and the name of the program and you should arrive at the uninstall feature. There is no installer, you just have to copy files from the extracted package to the c:\Program files\JAVA\JRE71 folder. Any help much appreciated. Steve. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAVA Access Bridge
Here's a link to a site that contains podcasts and other materials for blind computer users. It has a great podcast series on NVDA screen reader. But, there is also a podcast called "An easy way to instal JAVA access bridge". It might be just what you're looking for. It's marked off with its own heading, so finding it is easy by repeatedly pressing the "h" key for heading. www.vict-consultancy.co.uk/content/podcasts.htm - Original Message - From: "Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)" To: Sent: Friday, December 21, 2012 8:51 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAVA Access Bridge Dear all, I need to install the JAVA Access bridge on my Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit system, is anyone able to help please? Re: [JAWS-Users] java update
Hi Shane. On Windows 7, Java update dos'nt appear in the systemtray automatically. You must go to the progressbar and startmenu, and select the configure button, and set the compobox for Java updates to "Show icon and message" and hit ok, and than you will find the Java update in the system tray. Be aware of, that only the 32 bit Java automatically is updated, if you're running a 64 bit system, and use's the 64 bit browser, than you must manually update the 64 bit version of Java, by going to the www.java.com through the 64 bit browser, and download the update, and install it offline. Good luck. If there is an update, you should be able to get to something that says java update click to install or something similar. Hit enter and you'll get a menu that has an install option. Hit enter on that and it should allow you to install the update. Now if you went to java.com and downloaded it, that should be the most up to date version. I cannot get JFW to get me on the pop-up message and there is no sighted help at the moment. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
