RE: About Buying a new laptop which works well with Jaws
I'm not sure the brand is as important as is the keyboard. I think most brands today that don't mess up Windows and make it somehow proprietary are likely to be fine, and I don't think there is all that much customization of the operating system these days. I've used Lenovo laptops since Lenovo took over from IBM. I used IBM before that. I tried, and dumped, Toshiba. I'm glad to see others have had success with HP. I didn't, but that was before 1996. I've stuck with Lenovo both because that's my firm's standard and because the machines work well with JAWS. Watch out for the keyboard. My Lenovo Yoga, an ultrabook, not a laptop, has the best keyboard I've ever used on a portable computer, except for one thing. I cannot configure it to have an applications key and two JAWS keys. I have another Lenovo that doesn't have an Applications key (and cannot be configured to have one), but it has two JAWS keys. I use shift F-10 instead of the Applications key. It works, but is nowhere as handy as is the applications key. So, ideally, you should have an insert key, a capslock key, and an applications key. If the laptop doesn't have, or cannot be configured to have, these keys, I'd keep looking. -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Stan Bobbitt via Jfw Sent: Thursday, September 4, 2014 12:42 AM To: Melissa Stott; The Jaws for Windows support list. Stopping jaws from saying new line
Hi All, Does anyone know if it's possible to prevent jaws from saying new line every time the end of a line of text is reached when arrowing through a word document? I know by doing a say all I can keep this from occurring. But I'm editing a rather lengthy document and say all doesn't give me the level of control I need while reading. I don't really understand the usefulness of the new line announcement, but I will be content if I can just stop it. Hi Kimber, Try the following; 1. Open MSWord; 2. Press, Insert key + V, for Jaws Quick Settings; 3. Down arrow one time, now press the letter, E, you should hear, editing options. 4. Arrow down until you hear, New lines and paragraph indications, now press the spacebar until you hear, off, press enter to save the change close. Hope this helps. Take care. Subject: Google and JAWS Hi all -- I'm new to this list. For context, I'm losing my eyesight slowly to retinitis pigmentosa, and as a consequence, I've been slowly learning JAWS with an end-goal of doing all my computing tasks with JAWS and foregoing visual use altogether. All has been going well, except for Google. The main problem is the internet browser. Google Chrome and JAWS just don't play well together. Well, okay, so I switch to Internet Explorer or Firefox, right? Unfortunately, those browsers don't play well with the web-based Google services I use, such as Google Docs, GMail, and Google Code. So my preference would be to continue to use Google Chrome, and find ways to make it work with JAWS. So far I haven't been having much luck. One specific problem is that any time I follow a link to a new page, JAWS doesn't realize the page has changed. The Say All command, or the Read Next Line commands, just read text from the old page. Even though Google Chrome is corrently displaying the new page (I have some eyesight left, so I can see this). The other problem is the two different formats that most Google web pages use: Standard, and Basic HTML. Standard format definitely has problems with JAWS. Basic HTML works better, but the interface is practically unusable. Google has put very little effort into making their Basic HTML pages usable. And my pleas to Google to add some very basic features to Basic HTML have fallen on deaf ears. So, here I am, posting to the JFW list. Does anyone have any helpful hints on using Google Chrome with JAWS? How about using Google standard format web pages with JAWS? Any help would be appreciated. -- -Paul -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: Stopping jaws from saying new line
Thanks Adrian. That did work, but it also reminded me why I never used it. When you uncheck the box for new line and paragraph marks, you can no longer have the paragraph marks identified as you read. I'm not sure why the two marks are lumped together as I find the paragraph marks helpful where as the new line indication is simply annoying. But thank you for the assistance. Perhaps I will email FS and see if this option vcan be turned into two separate boxes. Re: Witch webmail works best with Jaws?
Wow! I have no clue how you folks can stand to use GMail in Basic HTML mode. It lacks even the most basic usability features, such as mark all as read. And organizing mail into folder hierarchies is truly painful in Basic HTML mode. The real difficulty with JAWS isn't GMail itself, it's the browser. Chrome has serious issues with JAWS, and Internet Explorer has serious issues with almost every Google web page, including GMail. Currently I'm trying to make things work with Internet Explorer, viewing the GMail page in standard mode. Aside from the fact that Internet Explorer keeps crashing, this is working pretty good. -Paul -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Another Problem with Jaws 15 and MS word 2010
I'm having my own problem with jaws and MSWord. Whenever I get to a new page in a word document, one of two things happens. When I use the arrow keys to navigate, wishing to read what I've just written, Jaws makes the sound as if I'm at the top of the document. It won't go to the previous page unless I use the control key. Or... When I'm reading through my document, if I'm arrowing to the previous page, it jumps to the *top* of the previous page and I have to control down arrow to get to the place I want. And if that place is at the end of a page, I'd better use the left or right arrows quickly to rush to my spot before Jaws leaps to the top of the previous page again. Any ideas? It's highly annoying when writing lengthy pieces. Si ___ Jfw mailing list Jfw@lists.the-jdh.com http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com
