Are you looking for a freeware/shareware solution? The one I use is a paid
for program.
And BTW, cute tagline.

RE: language question

2015-09-05 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
The soft French J sound, the one they use with the d in front of it, can
often be simulated with a zj, as it's got a lot of the soft z sound to the
beginning of it, a z sound they don't use much, instead preferring the hard
Z of zed.

I still use batch files, because they make it easy to do things you'd want
to do from a command line but editing it so you can control the output, and
also using Jaws to make sure you're not typing or fat fingering something.

RE: Just curious -- what happened to Windows 9?

2015-07-23 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
So was Vista.
Here's what I've found out using a simple web search.
There are a few possible reasons why they didn't go with Windows 9 as the
name. One possible reason is that 9 is considered bad luck in Japan. Another
suggested reason is that there is some legacy code that looks for Windows 9
to find out the version, and these old programs or anything that uses that
old code will think it's a Windows 95/98 version. Microsoft's reason is that
it's that big of a change in paradigm that they went to the more auspicious
10. Some folks also think it might be that they're planning on sticking with
the version name for a while, like Apple did with OSX, so they'll stick
around using different versions of Windows 10 for a while. The reality is
that it's Windows 6.4, based on the Vista 6x version, so they could call it
Windows 1,549,683 and it would have as much meaning as anything else. It's
just a marketing name. Of course, with the exception of the 4.x iteration
for Windows NT 4.0, even numbered versions of windows haven't been that
wonderful. (Remember, Vista starts with VI, the Roman numeral for 6) So they
could be shooting themselves in the foot by jumping to another even number.

RE: Broadcasting advice with JAWS

2015-05-28 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
I would suggest that you contact broadcasters locally and find out what they
use. Get a feel for what's the industry standard and focus on getting
facility with that set of tools. Some may have accessibility issues, so
you'll need to work with the department in your school to get those issues
resolved if at all possible.
You can find a lot more help regarding audio issues on the MIDI-mag list.
And you might also want to talk to folks at a local IAAIS (International
Association of Audio Information Services) station if you have one. These
are the folks that produce programs for blind listeners, and they're both
familiar with supporting blind folks and also familiar with broadcast
issues.

As a communications major, I will say that you need to have experience
using several audio editing software. Some of the most common that are
used in a professional setting include, Sound Forge and Adobe Audition.
I'm not sure how accessible these are now. They used to work fairly
well with JAWS. I haven't used later versions of these programs in
quite awhile. Audasity is free as others have pointed out here on the
list. If they will let you use this one for editing projects, go for
it. You should be familiar with the others, as they are the standard
 ones used in the industry.

Yeah, I'd love an audio version of Mille Bornes. A blind accessible version
of the standard deck solitaire game Calculation would also be nice.

 Hi Keith ,

Not sure about the games in the link I sent yesterday, but there are
many multi player games that one or more people can play on the same
 computer.
One good website is for Jim Kitchens audio games, it contains games
such as monopoly, game of life and many more that are multi player and
also some really good fun single player games such as golf, driving
games and many more. All games are again free on his site , although
all of jim kitchen's games don't actually require jaws as they are all
self-voicing using the PC's built in voice called SAPPI 5. Below is
the link to his games .

 Hi Carolyne ,

I play a lot of audio games on my PC and iPhone , everything from card
games, to golf to more complex games all really fun and totally
 accessible
using either jaws or my phones screen reader , would definitely
recommend trying a couple of audio games for yourself .

As for the spoonville games, I took a look at their website and they
have a section for blind games which will all either work with jaws or
be self-voicing and use the built in computer voice, also all the
blind games on the site are free too. in fact after taking a look at
their website I realised I have one of their games already .

I knew it would handle RichText, but I wasn't aware it would handle

When I use the Save As option, it will save the document as rtf. But
you still cannot navigate between headings etc.

Actually, Wordpad doesn't deal only with raw text documents, and it
can handle some heading stuff, as it'll handle rich text format
documents and HTML. But it's a very basic word processing program,
 and
though it's gotten some additional features since its inception (or
  conversion from
Write) in Windows 95, it's still not full featured and it's not going
to have the level of features you get in Word.
The text only editor is Notepad.

Hi, Mike. OK, I found Wordpad. The reason you can't use the same
features as in Word is that the document being edited is a text
document, not a Word-style document, which can be marked up with
  headings, etc.

Text documents don't have the same options as Word-style documents.
For example, in Word, you can press JAWS key plus Z and turn
navigation keys on and off. After turning navigation keys on, you
cannot edit the document, but you can move between headings, etc.

In WordPad, since there are no headings, etc., there are no

 Hi Greg,
This problem is not unique to Dell laptops; I've run into this issue
with Dell desktop machines that have an Intel graphics adapter. I
think the shortcut that caused the screen rotation is ctrl+alt+right
arrow, and to set it back to normal may be ctrl+alt+up arrow. If that
doesn't work, put focus on the desktop and make sure that nothing is
selected. Then bring up the context menu with the applications key or
shift+f10, and look for something related to Intel Graphics. Open that
submenu and in there you should see an option to reorient the screen.
You may also see something that will disable screen rotation.

 Hope that helps.

RE: Screen rotation.

2015-04-25 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Right, though I've got things set up so I can shut down Jaws and restart it
again with no problems, and this only comes up when a sighted person tries
to use my screen -- I couldn't care less about the rotation when I use it as
Jaws doesn't care about it at all from what I've experienced, and I don't
know there's a problem unless a sighted person, who is on hand to make sure
it's rotated correctly, is telling me about it. So though it's handy to be
able to do this without sighted assistance as one more accessibility issue
resolved, it's not something I can imagine comes up without sighted persons
involved.

 Hey Nicole.

Tim's suggestion gets it done without shutting off JAWS.

Windows + M or D to desktop then take focus off any icons then open the
context menue shift + f10 then to graphic options and to rotate screen.

I can't see the orientation so for me this indicates that I've set it
 to normal orientation

RE: Jaws question, Assigning A Shorcut Keystroke

2015-04-24 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
You left out a step.
0. Press Control+Alt+J and find out what comes up. If nothing starts from
this key combination then move on to the next steps. If something does open
up then you need to clear that shortcut assignment from the application
before continuing with the process, otherwise something else will start and
Jaws won't at least some of the time.

Subject: Re: Jaws question, Assigning A Shorcut Keystroke

 Hi Jennifer,

To shut down Jaws the keystrokes are, Insert / Jaws Key + F4, then
Enter or, Insert / Jaws Key, Windows Key, + F4. The keystroke, Insert
+ J, is for opening the Jaws context menu when running Jaws from the
 System Tray.

Here is 1 set of steps to create a shortcut keystroke for starting
 Jaws:
 1. Go to the Desktop by invoking the keystroke, Windows key + M, or,
 Windows Key + D.
 2. Press the letter, J, until you land on the JAWS icon.
 3. Press Alt + Enter to bring up the JAWS Properties page.
 4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key
combination of your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other
 combination you prefer.
 5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay
button and hit Space. That's it. Now, when you press Alt-Control-J or
whatever shortcut key you assigned, JAWS will be launched. HTH.
 Take care.

RE: Jaws question

Note also that some other programs set up the alt+ctrl+J shortcut, so it's wise
to hit it while Jaws is working to find out what comes up and if it's not Jaws
then change that shortcut. One of the Nero programs does this, for instance.

Alt plus Ctrl plus J works only if you previously enable it as a
shortcut to start JAWS; there actually is no default shortcut to launch
JAWS, so I'm not surprised you can't find one. There are, however,
ways to start JAWS without restarting the computer. For instance, if
you have a JAWS desktop icon, you can press Windows M or Windows D to
go to the desktop and then the letter J to get to the JAWS icon. At
that point press Enter to activate the icon. If you have iother icons
that begin with the letter J (e.g. Java), though, this may not be the
best option, as you will have no speech while you attempt to navigate
to the JAWS icon. Therefore, your best bet is probably to type JAWS
from within the start menu and press Enter, at least until you set up
the Alt plus Ctrl plus J shortcut.

Go to the row below where you want to insert the line. Press Control+ the

ways to do this, but this is the one I find to be the fastest and easiest,
and it works in every version of Excel I've encountered going back as far as

RE: Accessible web hosting that offers site templates

2015-02-19 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
I've had great results with Dreamhost. I've yet to run into any
accessibility issues with their setup, they have a wide array of one click
installs that will allow you to do some great stuff, and they auto-upgrade
these to keep you current. If you can't find an answer in their knowledge
base/Wiki (which is rare) they'll answer emails and they have an accessible
chat client, and if they still can't fix the problem they'll call you. I'm
on an unlimited space and account plan for about $10/month, which comes with
unlimited email accounts, bandwidth, and space. I've been completely happy
with them, and downtime is minimal too. If you decide to send your client
their way I'd appreciate you letting them know I sent you, as they'll also
give me a break on my rate for referring others.

RE: Fully Functional Screen Reader Petition

2015-01-21 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Here's the long and the short of it. You're not going to get a screen reader
that can read you what happens before the point of hard drive access on any
BIOS based machine, because it's not set up for that. It doesn't matter if
it's Jaws, Window Eyes, NVDA, or Narrator, it's not going to happen.
Microsoft could set up Narrator to activate if needed early on, but this
won't happen before the install sets up the audio resources, because it
won't have anything to play through. That said you've been able to script
Windows at least since 3.1, so it's possible, if you know the hardware
you're setting it up on, to do an installation with no human intervention so
that the first time you need to do anything is when you get to a functional
desktop. (And no, I don't have the details on such scripting for later
versions, as I haven't needed it, as I find myself doing a reinstall of an
OS about every four years or so, not constantly like some folks do -- I'm
careful with my OS) So having narrator or Jaws or any other screen reader
support during an install is sort of a non-issue, which is good because
before a certain point there would be absolutely no way that a screen reader
would work because it'd have nothing to play through. Smart phones and Apple
computers get around this by not using a BIOS setup, and that may be
something that happens with Windows based machines in the future, but for
now it's about as likely as you finding a stray Higgs boson in your pants
pocket or purse.

RE: Fully Functional Screen Reader Petition

2015-01-20 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Indications are that that day is coming, and soon. The jury's still out on
if MS will include scripting in Windows 10, as it can be a big security
problem. But they've got it working internally already.

You may not want to start a discussion, but posting a link to this
petition inevitably does just that. I worry that if MS came up with
anything close to Apple's VoiceOver, employers would assume basic
accessibility requirements have been met without the added cost of
buying and updating JAWS. As good as VoiceOver may be, and despite our
periodic frustrations with FS, JAWS is exclusively tailored to the
needs of visually impaired computer users. I dread the day MS takes on
this job and elbows FS out.

RE: EHarmony.com

2015-01-03 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
There are some accessibility roadblocks with Chemistry too, at least there
were when I was trying it out. I have a friend who works there, and he
helped me navigate through them. He also told me that none of them were of
any real use in finding a match, they just provided a bit of entertainment
for users of the site. Once I got past the survey and the initial contact
everything worked fine, but this was at least seven and a half years ago, so
it might have changed since then. He also told me that they weren't
interested in making the site accessible, as they were considered to be
entertainment category sites, and as such they didn't fall under 805J
restrictions. I suspect this is a general ethos across the entire matching
website industry.

This is an interesting question, as I signed up earlier this year. I
tried Internet Explorer, Firefox, and the Safari browser on the Mac. I
also tried m.eharmony.com as well as the regular site. By far, I had
the best luck when I installed the IOS app and filled out the questions
there. With Jaws, I couldn't proceed very far, except for once I'd
finished the exhaustive match profile questions. Once I did this on the
app, I have been usingJaws successfully with Firefox for best results.
Daily, I still use the ap to move through matches, but when
corresponding with them, I will use the computer to fill out the
questions. I have found that once you select your five introductory
questions on the computer, it preselects them, and the app does as
well, even though all of the big list of questions is there. When I
started the service, they had someone there called Val who would go
through different parts of the site and had some experience with Jaws.
She would set up an appointment each week to help out, but maybe she
doesn't work there anymore, as I stopped hearing from her. A call to
their service is helpful if you can find their phone number. Here's the
last one I have for them.
1-800-965-7249. In the absence of sighted help, since I didn't want to
involve family in this most private of matters, the staff can go
through the site and your preferences with you. One final note is that
when I was updating my credit card info, it wasn't clear that I was
signing up for a whole year membership, and it charged the year
membership when I thought I was only updating for the monthly charge.
I'm sure they would have refunded the money had I asked, but I'm
committed to it for the year.

If someone is paid to read it to you it is, for those who don't understand
the ramifications of the Copyright Act of 1976 and the ADA and the Chaffee
Act, thought to be a performance of the work and thereby an infringement of
the right to performance from copyright law. If this ever goes to trial
they're going to get their posterior handed to them, as all three laws
mentioned above deal with this for the visually or reading impaired. But
that misinformed blather still perpetuates.

I was very excited when I successfully installed and used the Kindle P
PC software. I read some of the three books that come pre-loaded. I
was able to do that just fine.

I then bought a Kindle book, a 2014 copyright date. It showed up on my
Kindle software. I went to read it, and got no speech. I called
Amazon, and found that not all Kindle books, even new ones, have the
audio. There is nothing to warn a blind purchaser that they are buying
a print only version. When I called Amazon, they confirmed the book I
had purchased had no audio. The rep said the only way to tell is that
when you are in your shopping cart, there is apparently a separate
button to buy the version with audio included. I told him Amazon
should put up a warning, since the absence of an audio version button
would not warn someone like me who assumed all new Kindle books came
 with the audio included.

So, excitement is all gone. Amazon did of course refund my money, and
said to check back every couple of weeks to see if the seller had
responded yet to Amazon's request to add an audio version. Oh well.

RE: Off Topic Messages and Users who Try to Act Like Moderators (Was: Best cellular phone for totally blind is it iPhone? )

2014-12-12 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
It always amazes me how fast people are to expect that something get shut
down on a mailing list. The Internet isn't as uniform as folks like to think
it is, and messages may come in at different times or someone may still be
trying to get to the cease and desist message when they respond. It is
always a good idea when trying to maintain any social interaction,
especially in a medium where where emotional cues are weak or even absent,
to be tolerant of others and give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, list cops are never welcome. If someone has a problem with a
particular topic it's best to bring it to the attention of the list
moderator or owner instead of turning into a sidewalk supervisor. Moderators
exist for this reason, and it's their responsibility to take care of these
problems.

There's also a list called Eyes Free on Google groups for Android users.

This is totally incorrect. Android has a screen reader called
Talkback, and it has had this for some time. Mobile Accessibility did

RE: UI for phones.

2014-12-12 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
This is fairly important to consider about the two options -- SERI, the
Iphone voice command function, is not native on the phone -- it requires a
functional data connection to work, from what I've been told by many users
both blind and sighted. So if you spend any time away from areas where you
have a data connection then it won't work in those instances. Talkback and
the Android voice command functionality is native to the phone, so it
doesn't have this problem.
I've found navigation on my Galaxy S4 to be both straightforward and
intuitive, but I have an extensive tech background, so my perspective on
what is intuitive is skewed.

 Subject: UI for phones.

 All,

Regarding the topic of the user interphase of phones available to the
blind community, there are two aspects of this topic that I know to be
 important to understand.

 1.Voice command.

 2. Navigation.

Note: my experience has ben with the Iphone exclusively.

 Voice command:

I am frequently frustrated in using the voice command of the Iphone
when compared to the same experience of my sighted companions using the
 android based phones.

In my experience the Iphone does poorly when driving it by voice. The
issues I have are that when speaking you cannot pause your speech as
the Iphone will assume your done and cut you off with its prompt
forcing you then to repeat the whole text or phone number over again.
I also notice that when comparing the voice command UI to the android
the Iphone is less accurate than the android. My android companions
can find locations and look up relevant topics quicker than can I with
 my Iphone.

 Navigation:

This seems to be where the Iphone exceeds the android. I have not used
the current version of the Iphone nor the current version of android
product however from what I know the Iphone is easier to navigate for
 the blind user.

Navigation is arguably the primary concern of the user since if you
can't get where you need to be the device is fundamentally useless.
However I have been very frustrated with the Iphone's lack of
functionality as it relates to voice command and thus I am very
interested to know if the android product has improved as it relates to
navigation of a blind user on the device's platform since the latest
update of the Iphone has actually made my device harder to use.

Is there anyone who has experience with both UI's and can comment?

Since no cellular phones use Jaws I suspect you're not going to get a lot of
responses to this, and you're going to get a lot of opinions and not a lot
of facts. You might want to ask this question on the blind tech mailing

that have very strong opinions on this topic. If you want my opinions on it

2014-12-11 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
My android phone came with a very good screen reader out of the box. No
additional purchase was required -- in fact, I haven't paid for anything on
my phone to make it accessible or to do what I want it to.
This is significant -- as all major operating systems save for Windows have
full featured screen readers we'll see a lot more capability when the next
version of Windows comes out (what it seems they're calling Windows 10) and
it may even be scriptable, which will make it tougher on Jaws and the other
for pay screen readers to justify the expense.

Someone else mentioned pivot tables, which may indeed be the best way
to go; but they are a bit complex. Alternatively, you may want to use
the vlookup function. This would involve simply adding a new column
Category into which you would add a code (e.g., 1, A, Lumber,
etc. or whatever you want) and then vlookup would look for the match
and sum for each match respective to the indicated column amount. Note
that your cvlookup function is imbedded within a sum function to do
this. Also, so long as each of your line item descriptions are
consistent you do not need to add a category column but, rather, could
 just vlookup on that.

Remember when using the insert commands that behavior in Excel can change if
you have a cell or cells on the clipboard. Instead of inserting a column you
won't get the dialog box and it will just insert the data on the clipboard.
This is extremely useful but can cause some interesting problems if you
don't take things like the length of column you're inserting into
consideration.

I'm doing it now. In a worksheet I shiftF10 then arrow down to
 insert
then to entire row or entire column. This inserts an entire row or
column but only one at a time.

Any advice on how to select the number of rows or columns you want to
insert and do it with one action?

RE: Reading column and row titles in Excel.

2014-11-07 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Insert+Alt+Control+C for columns, or Insert+Alt+ Control +r for rows. Set
the cursor on the column or row and hit that key combination. You can do
only one of these at a time. Excel will also sometimes forget this, so you
may have to do it more than once. I suggest saving the sheet as soon as
you've done it as that seems to help it to remember a lot of the time.

Actually I've found that Jaws works better with Outlook than Outlook
Express, and the spell checker problems OE has don't happen in Outlook. Note
however that Outlook doesn't have Usenet support if that's important to you.

 Jeff,

You are correct there is no Outlook Express for Windows 7, or 8.
Microsoft does not support Outlook Express after Windows XP. I did not
like the idea of changing to Outlook either but once you get used to it
then you hardly notice any difference!

 Hello all,

What text editors do you recommend for their accessibility and
features? I’m planning to edit text files, HTML, JavaScript, probably
other programming languages, LaTeX, XML and so on.

I’ve used Emacs frequently under Linux, as well as Vi/Vim, but I’m
unfamiliar with the text editor options under MS-Windows.

Whatever I choose needs to be well supported by JAWS, naturally enough
(or I wouldn’t be asking on this list).

 Suggestions appreciated.

It's a countif statement, but use the asterisk (*) instead of a value. This

That should be a countif in that formula, not count. To use count, try
=count(A2:A25) as the count always counts the number of numbers in a range
and needs no asterisk to set the counting criterion.

RE: getting emails out of junk

2014-10-22 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
The answer to this question depends on what program you're using to get your
email. If you just want to move a single message once then use the context
sensitive key (next to your right control key) and move it. If you want
messages from this sender to never go to junk, then you need your junk email
settings. In Outlook you'll find these in the same menu, but other programs
may have them elsewhere. There are no special Jaws keys that do this, so
just use your email program's functions to do this.

RE: getting emails out of junk

2014-10-22 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Probably not -- you have to mark them as not junk in the Junk Email submenu.
Hit your context sensitive key, arrow up to junk email, hit the right arrow
key, and then go to the Mark as not junk option and select the option to
not mark that as junk. You'll have to do this for every email you want not
to be marked as junk, and there's no way to do multiples like moving things.

As mentioned by others, the countif command is yourfriend in this. The
format is =COUNTIF(first cell in the range:last cell in the range, value you
want to count)
The value can be a number, text in quotes, or the contents of another cell.
Note that if you try to count in adjacent columns you can count them all in
one operation by setting the value after the colon to the last cell in the
second column. (or third, forth, etc.)

RE: excel

2014-09-25 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Try this as a troubleshooting trick. In another cell, type a direct
reference to any cell that contains a number. So, for instance, if there's
data in B2 then type into this other cell =B2 and hit enter. Now go back to
that cell, and if the value is there, it's something else. However, if the
value in that cell is =B2 then hold down your control key and hit the grave
key to the left of the one, because you've gotten yourself into formula view
mode. This should switch you back.
Another possible problem is the type of data the cell expects. Hold down the
control key and press 1. This should get you into the cell format window.
Make sure you're on the cell type page and select Number and the number of
decimal places you want. (Probably 0) You can hit enter in any part of this
screen to return to your worksheet.

Also remember that control+page up and control+page down will move you

Okay. Verified on my Office 2013. Sorry. Very early this morning I
heard Office 20*03 instead of 20*13.

First, Excel 2013 opens with only one worksheet in a workbook instead
of 3. So shift-control-s appears not to work because you can't go to
another worksheet because there isn't one

To review the Excel worksheet keystrokes, which are all on the home
 tab:

 Insert sheet: alt-h-i-s, or shift+f11.
 Delete sheet: alt+h-d-s.
rename sheet: alt+h-o-r. JAWS says 'edit'. Type in the new name and
press enter. It works, but on my machine at least JAWS doesn't talk
 much about it.
 Move or copy sheet: alt+h-o-m.

If you are using the JAWS virtual menus, rename and move/copy are in
the home/format menu, and I don't remember where the others are.

On my computer shift+control+s makes a list of worksheets if there is
 more than one.

You can change tab colors on the lower ribbon of the home tab,
 somewhere.

 Good luck!

RE: turn off or not

2014-07-15 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
First, let's just point that YMMV.
My server and main computer run non-stop. This is so they get regular
updates, and because it's easier on my electric bill. When an electrical
device starts up it takes more power to get it started than it does to keep
it running, much like how it takes more pushing to get a stalled car moving
than it does to keep it moving. It's the threshold between potential energy
and kinetic energy at play here and the inertial effects involved.
AS I said, your mileage may vary, and it depends on how often you access
your computer throughout the day. If you're one of those people who only
uses it for a single session throughout the day then it might serve you to
turn it on, do what you're going to do, and then leave it on for a time
afterward, setting your update cycle to hit then for your OS, office suite,
and virus and malware updates. If you use it throughout the day then it's
probably more energy conservative to leave it on.
Note also that unless your computer is unplugged from the wall it's going to
continue to draw power. (In this case unplugged from the wall can also mean
that it's plugged into a surge protector and the power switch for the surge
protector is turned off)

RE: quickBooks accessibility has arrived!

2014-07-08 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
The two programs are built for different target markets, which is where the
difference comes in.
Quickbooks is targeted for folks that have little actual accounting
training. It's a bookkeeping program. Peachtree is geared more towards folks
with more accounting knowledge, so it does some higher level stuff
accountants use for the more advanced tasks of an accounting job. This is
why CPA's tend to like Peachtree over Quickbooks. But both will get
bookkeeping done in their own individual way, so they're both worth
scripting.
As blind folks we face an uphill battle with getting accessibility, and the
feeling I see is one of thank the gods there's an option for us now.
That's not accessibility, it's accommodation, and there's no reason in a
fair world why all blind folks should be forced to use only one product
while the rest of the world can use any one of several. Multiple products
survive because people are different and have different ways of doing things
and different ways of thinking. There is great value in allowing blind folks
to have the same option instead of forcing them into using the same thing.
When we have the same choice that a sighted person has in software products
then we achieve parity with the sighted world and are no longer
marginalized.

RE: looking for an old jaws version

What kind of VM are you running? 98 will run Jaws 5 with no problems -- I
know, as my old Pentium II machine I'm using for my MIDI computer in the big
studio setup runs it just fine. I haven't tried it on 95, though.

i figured as much. well since the version of eloquence can't be used
all i would need is just the installer from the cd or the cd itself.
sure that would work in a vm if it's not too much to ask. Think the
demo on that version was also 40 minutes back then.
Maybe putting it in a site such as sendspace or dropbox would work if
possible. Don't really need the auth disk.

 Subject: Re: question about excel

You need a formula to include everything you want totaled. For
example, if you want cells b2 through b20 totaled, you would type the
 following:

 =sum(b2:b20)

 THIS MEANS
= -- The equal sign tells Excel that the following is a formula.
sum -- this is a function telling Excel to total the numbers in
 parenthesis
(b2:b20) -- add up the cells joined by the colon, including everything
 along the way.
 b2+b3+b4+b5+ etc.
If you want to total cells not adjacent to each other, join them by
 commas. So b2 + b3 + d4 would be
 =sum(b2,c3,d4)

 Good luck!

RE: SQRT in Microsoft XL 2010

2014-06-03 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
I took a great class for my first math credit in college. Instead of some
poorly taught college algebra class where a bunch of math GTA's tried to
force everyone into thinking like math majors, the university I went to
introduced a class that was algebra for non-math majors, called Elementary
Mathematical Modeling. (This was also because it was a big nursing school,
and the nursing students were failing math, which made them do something to
keep turning out nurses) And since I was blind the head of the math
department assigned me my own GTA. I did all my work in Excel for both that
and my statistics class, just him and me in a room in the disability support
center. And I learned all kinds of things.
Think about it, math works on all levels. The goal is to get to 1 for square
roots and exponents, so if something is raised to the power of 2 then to get
it to the power of 1 you need to multiply it by .5. And yes, . etc
is a cube root and .25 is a forth power root.
Excel will also calculate things using both Pi and E and handle statistical
functions. And I built a spreadsheet that handles the quadratic formula,
too.

RE: deleting rows in tables

2014-05-29 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
In Excel I find it far more useful to get to know the Control Plus and
Control Minus keystrokes, as they allow you to do so much more from the same
keystroke depending on the situation.
To delete a row or column, select a cell to be deleted and hit Control and
Minus. This will give you a dialog that asks you what you want to do --
delete the column, move cells up, move cells right, or delete the entire
row. You can use Control and Plus to add, with the same options.
If you select a row or column and then place your cursor on another row or
column Pressing Control and Plus will insert that column information there.
Be careful, though, as if any other columns or rows are longer than what you
selected then your data is going to get messed up, as it won't add empty
cells to keep the integrity of the data in that longer row or column.
These are fast shortcuts that don't involve any ribbons and have worked at
least back to Excel 2000. (Probably further back, but I didn't know about
them back then)
I don't know if this will work in Word -- I'll try it when I happen upon a
document that has a table in it.

RE: changing startup of JAWS

2014-05-29 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
It seems like it might be possible to tell it to do other things, too, like
pulling a daily aphorism , the output from something like the Murphy.exe or
Fnord.exe random text generators, or possibly playing an audio file, but I
don't know enough about Jaws scripting to know if these things are really
possible or not.

 Hi.
The time is pretty easy with a simple script.
At one time, I had a script that would say different things depending
on the time of day, I.E. morning, afternoon, evening or night.
Not sure how you would get the temperature and forcast unless you could
 tap into researchit.

Usenet News Readers Under Windows 7

2014-05-15 Thread Nicole Massey via Jfw
Morning folks,
I'm looking for a good program to read newsgroups under Windows 7. I don't want
to use WLM or Thunderbird to do it, and it needs to work well with Jaws 15 and
I'd prefer that it also support multiple NNTP providers and accounts. Anyone
got any reliable suggestions?

Yeah, Thunderbird and Firefox crash too often for my tastes.
Yes, there are several great newsgroups that have traffic. In fact, a lot of
them have less annoying stuff on them now that they require a bit more to
access them again.

I've had Firefox crash on me just about every time I've run it, so I don't
feel the love enough to try Thunderbird.
I was looking for something a bite more freeware, though -- my fixed income
already seems broken at the end of each month, so expending anything on

Hmmm, I honestly don't think Thunderbird has ever crashed on me. I
investigated a little; it looks like they still make Forte Agent, but
I've never used it to know if it works with JAWS, and it's not free; it
costs $29.99. It's an old program that's been around since 1994. We
used to have clients who used it under Windows 3.1 back in the day. Now
it's Windows 8 compatible. www.forteinc.com for more info.

 This

RE: Screen Readers

I suspect NVDA will have the easiest time of it early on, as they're already
a donationware product, but otherwise I suspect the for profit offerings
will shrink and the smaller ones will go first. I also think that the more
diversified companies that don't have all their eggs in one basket will
handle this better.

 Hi Nicole,
When the original blurb came across about GW Micro there were some
 caveats about support.
I never followed any of them up but it appeared to me that the free
version came with little or no support. You could, of course, purchase
a maintenance agreement and have full support.
Now, after I posted the thing about Microsoft running off other
companies I gave it more thought and you do have a valid point.
It will be most interesting to see which snake crawls in bed with which
other snake. (LOLLOLLOL) I suspet that several companies may well be
looking down the gun barrel wondering when the bullet will come flying
out. (LOLLOL) Someone mentioned Sendaro and I wlso wonder how long they
can survive charging a grand for a navagation system which can be had
for very little or even free on the iPhones and other i-devices.
I did notice a special offer from Sendaro for the Braille Notes but
have not looked into it either.
I can safely say that the future should be most interesting indeed.
I have not renewed my SMA with Fs and mnay not ever do so.
