[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1574982] Re: Cannot use CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG: -fstack-protector-strong not supported by compiler

2016-10-16 Thread Dan Marinescu
this is not a gcc bug. this is an ubuntu management specific arrogance
(and perhaps some cash from redmond with love) - of course it is
completely wrong to patch the kernel makefile because they decided to
ship a gcc unable to build the kernel itself (with wrong
defaults/specs). but like they said repeatedly, they are not a
democracy. also just like linus said repeatedly, fuck unubuntu!

>Why isn't this a bug in gcc 6? It doesn't seem right that we have to patch the
>kernel makefile to get it to build.

Title:
Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus
x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the
shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system
just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen
showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown"
and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine
  won't turn off.

I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it
hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo
stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the
  end.

The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the
google results of the past month / week or so.

I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and
all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but
unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation
  occurred.

Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work.

Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue.

So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press
the power button on the keyboard continuously.

  Reproducible: Always

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.Install OS
  2.Do something, anything or nothing
  3.Try to shutdown or reboot

  Actual Results:
The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there.

  Expected Results:
  Powering off the machine.

For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but
using the menu buttons for suspension will do it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1592442] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial hard crashing on ACER E3-11-P0D8

2016-10-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Saif Taifur Anwar, I'm closing this report, as your crash report is
manually attached (also, please don't compress/tar attachments as it
makes it harder for developers to review).

Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your
crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First, execute at a
terminal:
cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y
dist-upgrade && sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in
/etc/default/apport and restart. Now reproduce the crash, then open a terminal,
navigate to your /var/crash directory and file your report with:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. By
default, this sends the crash to the Ubuntu Error Tracker
infrastructure, which is different than Launchpad. For more on this,
please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker .

However, if after doing this you would still like to have a crash report posted
to Launchpad, for example to ease triage and add others to your report, one
would need to open the following file via a terminal:
sudo nano /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and file the crash report via:
sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/FILENAME.crash

Where FILENAME is the actual name of the file found in the folder.

However, the process outlined above will deal with this issue more
efficiently.

Also, it wouldn't be most helpful to attach your crash report manually
to this report and reopen it.

Thank you for your help.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1592442] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial hard crashing on ACER E3-11-P0D8

2016-10-16 Thread Saif Taifur Anwar
I will attack some files as requested.

In /var/crash i found one file: _usr_bin_mate-panel.1000.crash

Alongside, i am uploading the kernel logs.
Those kernel logs are huge, and at this point very tedious for someone to look
into that stuff. I also don't remember which date the crash happened after bios
update.

So if you guys want, i can wait for a system freeze, and then upload the
kernel logs.

I am not really familiar with crash dump recipe, not i believe it makes
a dump. My system freezes completely.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1600624] Re: MacBook wifi doesn't work (brcmfmac)

2016-10-16 Thread Lars Peter Thomsen
Reinstalling 16.10 from scratch has resolved the issue; I no longer see
the issue with 4.9-rc1 or any other kernel down to 4.5.4. No clue why.

Networking driver e1000e needs updating due to 82574L (and others?) keeps
dropping RX packets.
Information about how to fix it can be found here
(http://www.doxer.org/learn-linux/resolved-intel-e1000e-driver-bug-on-82574l-ethernet-controller-causing-network-blipping/)
but including it in the default kernel or official package would be preferable.
This controller is popular in Supermicro servers.

2016-10-16 Thread Lars Peter Thomsen
Issue remains on 4.8.1. Boot is aborted and displays a rescue prompt.

I'll try going back to 15.10 and see if any kernel versions exhibit the
problem. Are we sure that this is an issue with the kernel and not
another package?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1504445] Re: FocalTech touchpad stops working after suspend

2016-10-16 Thread Alexander Morales Sevilla
Hello, I tested kernel ubuntu 4.9 rc1 in my X450LD, the touchpad works
perfectly after suspend thats a relief after a year of this bug, this
patch is going to be merged in 4.8.x?

Title:
FocalTech touchpad stops working after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have an Asus V502LX the persian version of the Asus K501LX.

I have Ubuntu 14.04 installed and the kernel 4.1.6 installed. I had to
install the kernel 4.1.6 to have the touchpad recognised. Under kernel
3.19.30, as I am running now to file in this bug, the touchpad is
recognised as a simple mouse (no two fingers scrolling...) and the
problem I am describing below is also present...

I noticed one problem. The Focaltech touchpad is not working after
  suspending the computer.

Here is what I could find about the touchpad in
  /proc/bus/input/devices

  I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0012 Version=
  N: Name="FocalTechPS/2 FocalTech FocalTech Touchpad"
  P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
  S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input5
  U: Uniq=
  H: Handlers=mouse0 event4
  B: PROP=5
  B: EV=b
  B: KEY=e520 1 0 0 0 0
  B: ABS=2608003

Before suspending the computer, I can deactivate and activate again
the touchpad with the hotkey of my keyboard without problem. However,
once the computer suspended, nothing work to re-activate the touchpad.

I tried a solution given on internet but it doesn't work properly.

  I created a file here /etc/pm/sleep.d/trackpad
  sudo gedit /etc/pm/sleep.d/trackpad

  and add the following
  #!/bin/sh
  case "$1" in
  suspend|hibernate)
  modprobe -r psmouse;
  resume|thaw)
  modprobe psmouse;
  esac

With this file, the computer refuse to suspend. The touchpad keep
working so it does something but I can't make my computer sleeping...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1118447] Re: Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

2016-10-16 Thread Christian Mertes
Hey,

here in our institute we use VMware ESXi to deploy Ubuntu 14.04 machines
running:

Linux hostname 3.13.0-98-generic
#145-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 8 20:13:07 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And we experiencing the same bug with the NFS race condition. Is there
already a bugfix after 2 years? Or do we still need to mount the NFS
after bootup manually?

Im happy to share some test results or logs, if needed.

Title:
Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in nfs-utils package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I seem to experience a race condition during boot of my ubuntu 12.04 server:
In approx. one of seven boots, the server hangs during bootup.
This is what I see on the screen:

  After the line

   * Starting configure network device

there is a short delay of about 1 second, then messages continue. I
  see

   * Starting Mount network filesystems [ OK ]
   * Starting set sysctls from /etc/sysctl.conf [ OK ]
   * Starting configure network device [ OK ]
   * Stopping Mount network filesystems [ OK ]
   * Stopping set sysctls from /etc/sysctl.conf [ OK ]
   * Starting Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]
   * Stopping Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]
   * Starting Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]
   * Stopping Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]

The last messages repeats several times, and then the boot process hangs.
In 6/7 of cases, I wait for a minute, and after that bootup continues.

But in approx 1/7 cases, the system hangs at this point forever. The
machine does not respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL, I have to reboot it using
  SysRq-Keys.

WORKAROUND: Setting the NFS entries in fstab to "noauto" completely removes
the problem:
There is no timeout during boot, and no lockup any more. The machine boote
smoothly with the NFS-shares unmounted. After the machine is up, we can
manually mount the NFS-shares without a problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1575437] Re: Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

2016-10-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
chris (windybasket), to advise, WORKAROUNDs (i.e. having to boot into
recovery mode to install drivers) isn't considered a fix, solution, etc.

Despite this, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu
repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

Please feel free to subscribe me to it.

For more on why this is helpful, please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Title:
Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
A fresh install of Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 on an Asus ZenBook UX501VW hangs
during boot, approximately 80% to 90% of the time... occasionally it
manages to complete the startup for no discrenable reason, at which
point the fan will run at full speed nonstop (very loud) until the
machine is powered down. Due to the information from
  , I installed the wily 4.3.5 kernel (replacing 4.4.0)
  from ,
which appears to work perfectly... no bootup hangs or odd fan
  behaviour

The hang occurs shortly after providing the disk decryption key (I
opted for full-disk encryption during installation). The issue occurs
frequently when booting Ubuntu Gnome from a flash drive using "try
before installation" mode, however, so I'm confident that it's not
  actually encryption related.

I am *not* using any proprietary drivers (no nvidia, etc.).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1490130] Re: Elantech touchpad stops working after suspend

2016-10-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Harris Anggara, to advise, an upstream patch working for you wouldn't
fit the definition of Fix Released for linux (Ubuntu) as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status .

Despite this, it would be helpful to confirm if the patch noted by
Marcos Paulo de Souzas indeed fixed your issue. Instructions are
available via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#Testing_a_newly_released_patch_from_upstream
.

Could you please advise?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1633681] Re: Lenovo G50-30 laptop does not start after rebooting

2016-10-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
lumiza, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

In order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your
earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please
keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the
daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
requested to do so.

It is most helpful that after testing of the latest upstream kernel is
complete, you mark this report Status Confirmed.

Lastly, to keep this issue relevant to upstream, please continue to test
the latest mainline kernel as it becomes available.

Thank you for your help.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1504445] Re: FocalTech touchpad stops working after suspend

2016-10-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Thatoo, could you please advise if the patch works for you via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#Testing_a_newly_released_patch_from_upstream
?

Title:
FocalTech touchpad stops working after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have an Asus V502LX the persian version of the Asus K501LX.

I have Ubuntu 14.04 installed and the kernel 4.1.6 installed. I had to
install the kernel 4.1.6 to have the touchpad recognised. Under kernel
3.19.30, as I am running now to file in this bug, the touchpad is
recognised as a simple mouse (no two fingers scrolling...) and the
problem I am describing below is also present...

I noticed one problem. The Focaltech touchpad is not working after
  suspending the computer.

Here is what I could find about the touchpad in
  /proc/bus/input/devices

  I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0012 Version=
  N: Name="FocalTechPS/2 FocalTech FocalTech Touchpad"
  P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
  S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input5
  U: Uniq=
  H: Handlers=mouse0 event4
  B: PROP=5
  B: EV=b
  B: KEY=e520 1 0 0 0 0
  B: ABS=2608003

Before suspending the computer, I can deactivate and activate again
the touchpad with the hotkey of my keyboard without problem. However,
once the computer suspended, nothing work to re-activate the touchpad.

I tried a solution given on internet but it doesn't work properly.

  I created a file here /etc/pm/sleep.d/trackpad
  sudo gedit /etc/pm/sleep.d/trackpad

  and add the following
  #!/bin/sh
  case "$1" in
  suspend|hibernate)
  modprobe -r psmouse;
  resume|thaw)
  modprobe psmouse;
  esac

With this file, the computer refuse to suspend. The touchpad keep
working so it does something but I can't make my computer sleeping...

Bug description:
  Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Networking driver e1000e needs updating due to 82574L (and others?) keeps
dropping RX packets.
Information about how to fix it can be found here
(http://www.doxer.org/learn-linux/resolved-intel-e1000e-driver-bug-on-82574l-ethernet-controller-causing-network-blipping/)
but including it in the default kernel or official package would be preferable.
This controller is popular in Supermicro servers.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1518483] Re: problem with PIE binaries and kernels <= 3.19

2016-10-16 Thread Esokrates
sbeattie: Any chance of building bash with pie in the future? 16.10 has
4.8 as default kernel, so disabling pie should not be necessary
anymore!?

Status in linux source package in Vivid:

Bug description:
When bash is built as a Position Independent Executable (PIE), it very
sporadically crashes due to some issue with memory layout in kernels
before 4.2. I'm currently testing enabling PIE by default in gcc on
amd64 for xenial, and some of my builds (e.g. cpio) are failing in the
buildds with the following message emitted:

bash: xmalloc: .././locale.c:81: cannot allocate 2 bytes (0 bytes
  allocated)

when the bash that is used is built as PIE. I have seen these failures
on buildds where the host is running 3.13 and 3.19. I am also able to
reproduce this locally on a machine running trusty with the stock
trusty kernel. However, when I boot that same machine with the linux-
lts-wily (4.2) kernel and retry the build with everything else exactly
  the same, the failure disappears.

I discussed this a bit with Kees Cook, and he noted that some cleanups
to the kernel's ASLR code happened in 4.1. Specifically, he noted:

commit a87938b2e246b81b4fb713edb371a9fa3c5c3c86
Author: Michael Davidson

fs/binfmt_elf.c: fix bug in loading of PIE binaries

However, that landed in stable and has been picked up in our kernels as
668965be56ea0b2c45ed6bec84dc2088490ae6b1, landing in Ubuntu-3.13.0-56.93 and
b51621abbcb4694b8d2842ce3a66006a60bba6e5 / Ubuntu-3.19.0-19.19.

Kees also pointed out that he landed a series of patches from
  204db6ed17743000691d930368a5abd6ea541c58 until Michael Davidson's
  patch (i.e.

a87938b2e246b81b4fb713edb371a9fa3c5c3c86..204db6ed17743000691d930368a5abd6ea541c58
  ), and in particular, there's:

commit d1fd836dcf00d2028c700c7e44d2c23404062c90
Author: Kees Cook

mm: split ET_DYN ASLR from mmap ASLR

Other fixes that I see to fs/binfmt_elf.c and arch/x86/mm/mmap.c look like
they either occurred only in 4.3 or have already been backported via the stable
kernels.

I should also point out that these cleanups may address some of the
ASLR failed tests that occur on non-x86 architectures for pre 4.2
  kernels.

I am happy to test out kernels to try to address this. Thanks.

Title:
upgrade to kernel 4.4.0-43 renders system unusable

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

After the update to kernel 4.4.0-43 laptop (asus zenbook UX305UA) became
unsuable :
  - touchpad not working
  - usb mouse not working
  - screen resultion not recognized anymore only allowing basic resolution
  - I did not test sound, etc... since no pointing device was accepted anymore
to navigate the gui
  - Only possible interaction via dash/terminal

Problem is solved by switching back to kernel 4.4.0-42

Tell me what you need to diagnose the cause
Please give exact commands since I'm not a deep core techy.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1505067] Re: [HP Spectre x360 - 13-4001nf] Audio broken, broadwell-U audio controller

2016-10-16 Thread madbiologist
The upstream 4.9-rc1 kernel has been released. It includes the patch I
mentioned in comment #6 as commit
0eec880966e77bdbee0112989a2be67d92e39929. This patch is also in the
upstream 4.4.24 kernel as commit
9c5d4350420bc1f9fa4f7cc79b4e35860c48.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1574982] Re: Cannot use CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG: -fstack-protector-strong not supported by compiler

2016-10-16 Thread Nazar Mokrynskyi
cerebellum-ukr, is there any place to track for upstreaming necessary
patches? Quite boring to do this every time I want to build kernel.
