KR> control movement ailelrons
Thanks Colin, Mark, and Mark; I think I will live with the 2" of travel for the control movement at the stick connection. Since I haven't built the control horns for the ailerons yet I see some corrections can be made. (How many I Build to get it right will depend.) Thanks KRnet. KR> control movement for airlerons
I am using the Dual stick design I.E. Langford. Just put the assemble together for the welder. I noticed that the shuttle rod movement may only be 1.75". (This would be the aileron movement at the cable contact for those that don't know of the system). For those whom used this same set up I would like to know if this is OK? or Should I redo? I Might be able to tweek it to get 2" of travel but no more. Steven Phillabaum KR2S; 5048; corvair; Auburn, Alabama
KR> Control mevement at aileron cable
I asked this one way but did not get an answer. Mark did reply. Re phrased. Can someone measure the total travel the aileron cable makes at the stick connection? Mine is looking like 1.75" maybe 2.0". Is this going to be enough? Thank you. Steven Phillabaum KR2S; 5048; corvair; Auburn, Alabama

Hello net, This is for those whom built there Hinge system using Dr. Deans Hinges. I am looking for a piece of T stock for use in the Dr. Dean hinge control horn. I made mine out of channel but did not permanently attach it. I would like to use the correct item. I have searched the archieve and found a reference to McMaster but they sell it in 8 foot length. and, it is 1.5" by 7/8". Guess I could use the leftover as another sanding stick. I already have sanding sticks and don't want anymore. But I wonder if anyone has a section they could put in the mail and send to me. "...A sanding disc mounted on a table saw or radial arm saw will come in handy at this time for shaping the gusset blocks." John's Question: Can anyone tell me the size of the "Outer rear spar vert pcs"? > My list has two of them listed. > 1 pc 1/2 x 1 ?/? 42". > 1 pc 1/2 x 1/2 x 42". > John, Welcome, Do you have your plans? If not then get them. The answer to your question is the rear outer spar is made of 1/2" x 1/2" and 1/2" x 7/8" thick pieces of spruce. The end of the spar is made up of the first piece 1/2" thick by the width of the spar cap. (Look at your plans to see that dimension just to be sure). The next piece is a 1/2" by 1/2". Followed by a piece thats again 1/2" thick by the width of the spar cap. Notice each piece alternates. The length of each vertical piece is different do to the taper of the spar. Please note that I am doing this from memory and do not have the plans in front of me. I remember having to order extra spruce for the verticals in the forward spars due to the deeper spar in the newer wing. I had plenty of material for the rear spars. Good Luck. KR> Installed my spars.
Finally after a month of procrastinating I installed my spars in the center section. The Langford Templates worked great. With the use of a "smart level" I only had to shim the rear spar. The forward spar went in snug and measured level and square to the tail. The Template held the rear spar in place until I was able to get the correct shims in place under the spar. While the T88 is drying I continue to check the entire installation. It's nice to go out and hear the level beep when I put it on the level line. One note I am using the 5048 with a forward spar height of 8.19". Looks really high. Can't wait to try it on. Looks like I will be reclining in my lounge chair while in flight. Yal have fun in Mt. Made by Sensenich; and has markings written with a sharpe that shows degrees like 35, 40, 45. Doesn't look used. I thought it might make a good decoration. What do you think? Some kind of rotor or prop? What does it go on? I was going to send an Email to sesenich but thought I could get a fast answer here. God Bless those to the South of me. KR> Perpedicular Firewall or Level Longeron?
Hey Net. I have been procrastinating way to long now about my center spar installation. I have done the search and did not find successful information. I would like to know from those that have tried. Due to the banana boat the fire wall and longerons are not perpendicular. If I use the smart level and use the firewall as my main reference what will it do to the flight stance of the plane? And, What if anything will be needed to do to the engine mount? I can picture the plane flying with a nose down attitude which looks like it would cause a lot of drag by the fuselage. My building is at a standstill until I install my spars. Cris, Welcome, I studied the plans and looked at sites for several years before I started. (Had to buy a house with a garage). While you are reviewing the plans you can go ahead and print out the rib templates if you want to use the new ones. Start looking for material. Shipping problems can cost for the large orders like plywood. And most of all try to decide on any modifications and stick to them. I have just completed one year of building and I am complete with the spars, elevator and within a few weeks I will be mounting my landing gear. Start shopping now and look for partially complete items including partially complete projects. They can get you in the air in a shorter time. But then I like the process of building. KR> Longeron Doubler bevel at firewall
Hello net. You will have to have your plans out for this one. I have a question about the Longeron Doubler at the fire wall. The plans show the first Longeron planned to match the 1/4" shelf and filler block. Also shows the Doubler beveled to match the angle of the first Longeron. 1. Is the first longeron beveled the entire length? 2. Then is the Doubler beveled to match the angel of the side of the Longeron? 2. Is this the way you did it? 3. Can I just glue the Doubler to the longeron and only bevel the portion of them both that will be involved with the shelf area? The book shows what looks like a KR1 with almost straight sides and states just to glue on the doubler. The Plans drawing B shows the bevel situation. Note I have widened my fuselage to be 44" and have a stock firewall. Talk about a Banana boat. Steven Phillabaum KR2S; 5048; corvair; Auburn, Alabama

KR> glue or staples for belly skin?
Hello, netters; I have made a search first but did not get an answer. I will be installing my belly skin this weekend and wonder. Should I use staples or weights? I have enough jugs filled with water to cover the entire skin. I don't know if this would distort, twist, or even create a good contact. Sure would be nice not to have to remove those staples. I will be using staples. I was planning on putting on the tail section half of the skin when it dried then adding the front. guess I will have to live with the messy glue on the tail half. Or wait and do both at the same time. I HAVE TO drive to Aircraft Spruce on tuesday and buy ANOTHER 4 x 8 ply. Darn I still wont be able to turn the boat this week. KR> Horizontal Stabilizer Tips
Hello net. I have a question. The tips of my Horizontal Stabilizer are currently flat and I like the way they show off the "new" airfoil. I want to know if leaving them flat will cause airflow or drag problems? If so I can round them off and glass over. I added 3/4" of foam on the ends for ease of shaping. Finish the tips, cut out the tab and be finished with this part of the build. Steven Phillabaum Auburn, Alabama

Hello Brian, Here is one way. I used something like this for boat repairs only is was on a smaller scale. I'll try to put it in words. Basically its a sanding pole but tapered. You can make it out of cardboard. or, a 3" template for one end and a 12" template for the other. Install some foam, sand, then glass. When cured stick some sandpaper on it. When you sand only use short bursts and slowly work from small radius to the large. OR you will have to just eyeball the fairing. KR> bad crank
Absolutely I wouldn't use a built up crank. The "Best Machine Shop" in town thinks I am being stupid for not using a 20/20 cut crank. He just does not know. Since my post of the bad crank I found 3 cars in east Georgia in a junk yard. When I called I was told I probably wouldn't want them because the were not the engines with the dual carbs on each side. WOW, what he don't know will same me money. I told him I would come look at anyway and might be able to take them off his hands. The engines are still in the cars and I have to remove them myself. Never took a vair engine out but have to so on dozens of Volkswagens. Isn't there a hidden bolt in the bell housing I will need to find. OK here it goes, My wife and I help out on an "underground for dachshunds." transport system. To save dogs from being put to sleep. We drive 2 hours one way to pick up the dogs then drive 2 hours in the other direction to deliver to another transport person. An example of that would be since I live in Auburn, Alabama would be to meet someone in say, Mobile Alabama (3 hour drive for me) and then take the molds to Atlanta Georgia (2 hour drive from my house) thus making the total trip over a period of a couple days maybe a couple weekends. If you were at the gathering you may have noticed the pins on the map. A network of pick up and delivery points could get something from one place to another. Hey builders, Just an update on the building. Since the warm weather I glassed the bottom side of the Horizontal Sab.. But, I got my engine back from the machine shop. The crank is rusted to .09 and it would require cutting to 20/20 to make it work. According to William I can't use. Well back on the phone looking for another engine. All the hours I spent on the bad engine I could have been working the plane. At least I have clean case halves. Back to the garage to sand on some more foam. I have not had my pictures of the gathering developed yet. But, when I do I will see if I have a good picture and try to get it to you. Steven Phillabaum Auburn Alabama
KR> Clapps trip home - ALMOST!
Bill Clapp here typing a message to all KRnet guys (since I dont have net access yet!) WE left out of Mount Vernon after an amazing Gathering on Sunday at about noon. The Gathering was a great time with a lot of fun people to be around with - lots of energy and excitment - and a good experience overall. It was fun to talk to all the guys and gals interested in my plane and see all the beautiful work on the others. Steve Glovers interior was outstanding! I have something to work on now for next year. We left out of MVN at about noon Sunday - stopped in Mount Pleasant an hour 30 minutes later to have some ribs at the steakhouse and then flew down to Auburn, Al because winds at home in Valdosta GA were over 20 and gusting 36. Fortunately Steve Phillibaum had left me his number and has provided room and board for me and my daughter. Many KUDOS to him. 41768 is now snuggling itself underneath a Citation at the airport. Hopefully the weather will improve for an uneventful trip home. I want to say thank you to all those who have helped and given advise to me the past couple years. To William Wynne at the Corvair Authority for his help and support for a great engine design that I trust. To Mark Langford for his work on the new improvements that make this KR a true joy to fly. To Larry Flesner for his work at the gathering. To Glenda Mcalwee for the use of here radio, and Larry Koutz for the use of the GPS. Thanks also to those who stopped by to look and talk. To those who are building, KEEP AT IT! I may have time available now to help others out. I may get back on the net now and talk to those who want my advise or just yell at me. I have facilities that I may have available to those wanting help with their KRs - paint booth and room to build. Currently Glenda McAlwee has her airboat and soon another KR in my shop for her and I to work on. So If you need hand on help and can come and visit or I can visit you and give you a hand (provided you ! pay for the COKE. :) I'm more than willing to help out. Again thanks to all involved for the great attitudes and for the fun at the Gathering - The next will be even better - if that is possible. I will be stuck at Steves house for another day so I can answer questions and threw in my two cents (1 dollar Canadian) for you. Bill Clapp
KR> Bill Clapp Home
Bill left this morning and called to say he made it ok. When he left he signed off on my spars. We talked KR for two days and I got some great ideas now. When he took off at AUO he performed a low pass (go around) at almost full speed. Made the mechanics come out of the hanger. COOL. Now when I talk KR they will knowThis KR on steroids is going to really get some attention now. The KR people are really a great bunch. Can't wait till next year. KR> Buying Spruce
Hello, John As far as where you purchase depends on where you live. Aircraft Spruce will send what you need in about 7 weeks but not out of the East Coast store. Wicks will send it in one week. I also recomend you purchase what you need for the time you are going to work. I have just purchase the material for the spars. and noticed a couple of items spec wrong. I plan on sending my corrected listto someone whom can post for the net. KR> outer spar question
I am trying to lay out my rear outer spars. 5048 wings. The question I have is concerning the verticals. Are they beveled to each spar cap? or, Are they 90 degrees off of one cap and then beveled to the other? Can't wait to use my new belt-disc sander my wife got me. Temps are good in the garage today and wind is gusting to 30 mph. No rain yet. Steven Phillabaum Auburn AL

KR> warped spar
Help. I tried to build my rear center spar something like Mark L. did by using an aluminum angle clamped to the work table. I attached the verticals to one of the spar caps and to the spar web. After that cured I attached the other spar cap. When I removed the spar from the jig and laid it on the table I noticed a twist about 1/16 to 1/8. Can this be corrected by offset pressure over a period of time? Can the other web skin help hold it straight? Or, Should I rebuild it and chalk it up to experience? Steven Phillabaum Auburn AL
KR> Midget Mustang
Brian my father is finishing a Mustang II is that anything like a Midget? If so he might be able to send you in the right direction. KR> spar material
Hello netters, I became a Grandfather Saturday. Boy is he good looking. I have been hanging back until I updated my anti virus program. Its done. As far as KR. I used the material list as specified in the plans and Wicks list. Tried to purchase only the wood for the spars. Wrong. I now have to get the 7/8" material for the rear outer spar verticals. which I forgot. Also if you are building the new wings you WILL need more vertical material than listed. KR> Spar taper jig
I have a spar taper jig I used to taper the 89.5 inch spars in the plan view. I can't seem to trash it. If someone wants it you can have it. (although you can make one in about one hour.) I might even bring it to the gathering and put it in the give-a-way pile. (Do we have one of those?) How many days? Steven Phillabaum Proud Grandpa in Auburn AL.
