I had the same problem -added the tab on the advice of my mentor though my

My challenge:

In reviewing the U.S. aircraft registry alone, it appears that nearly
1000 KR2's, KRII's, KR2S's have been registered over the years with
maybe only 10 percent or so still current. My challenge is for
everyone on the list to buy 10 post cards, go to the registry, pick
10 names in your state / country, and send them a card asking them to
post a photo / info of their KR to Mark's web address (included on
the card). If you can find the address of those no longer current,
include them also. If each of us get just one response we could add
500 aircraft to the site.

Larry Flesner

Sample message: The (FAA registry / country) list you as a current
owner of a ( KR2, KR2's) aircraft. We would like your aircraft to be
included in the world wide listing of KR aircraft. Please e-mail a
photo and info to http://www.n56ml.com to be added to the
www.krnet.org web site. Thank you. (signature)

KR> KR down in South Africa

2014-01-29 Thread Willie van der Walt
Very sad! Sounds like a bird-strike and the bird got jammed on the aileron
balancing weight that was hanging below the wing. (Like spades on aerobatic
planes). Piet logged many hours on KR2's. Highly experienced instructor and
very current. When Bill Klapp came to SA I took him to meet with Piet.

See enclosed image. One improvement to the sensor flange was a steel AN4 37
degree fitting, which I welded on since I took this picture. It will serve
as a fuel return for fuel recirculation and pressure regulation, and can
also be used to fill the tank from a wing tank that may be added later. Now
adding fuel pumps, filter, primer, and totalizer. No worries...it will
still be lighter than when I started!

Now back to work...

KR> Thorpe

2012-01-11 Thread Willie van der Walt
Hi Glen
I am the proud owner of a Thorp T-18 and two KR2 aircraft. If you can fly
the Thorp, the KR2 should be no problem. With the Thorp it is easy to get
the speed down to the correct number (100 mph) and you can land even if the
speed is not 100%.
With the KR2 you must get the speed down in time. If you sit on finals at
90mph you may have to go around as the little plane will float and eat a 1.2
km runway for breakfast. My Thorp cruise at 150 knots and the KR 150 mph.
Thorp 160 Hp and the KR2 only 80 Hp. The KR2 is much more gentle in the
stall at about 52 mph where the Thorp drops a wing very fast at about 70 and
sometimes flick over to scare the you to death.

KR> Jabiru powered KR2-S

2011-05-23 Thread Willie van der Walt

The Jabiru is lighter so you may need to hang the battery on the firewall.
You can also fit spacers between the firewall and the mounting to extend it
forward. The engine must be offset 3 degrees to the right. My mounting is
10mm longer on the left side but untested. The long nose makes it look like
fighter plane. You can also mount the engine higher than a VW that will
allow you to swing a larger prop. As soon as as I fitted the RPM pick-up my
3300 will be ready to fly.

each of my KR2's but can not get the stuff here in South Africa. Can you, or
somebody willing, make up all the pieces and sell it to me? Including the

Sid is absolutely right in that a mixture meter is the way to find your
Stoichiometric or ideal fuel/air mixture. However, I have heard that they
won't last very long when used with leaded fuels. Of course that may not be
a problem for much longer, but for now it still is. I'll direct the
question to Sid or others using the meter Do the mixture meters have a
longevity issue when used with leaded fuels such as 100LL? Thanks in
advance for your answer.

Ever heard of a mixture meter? Show up at the Gathering on September 18 &
19 at MVN and I am sure there will be several flying examples. IF you want
to hear it, I will be glad to tell you all about mixture meters.

Hi Mark

It was nice meeting you and others at Oshkosh!

I flew a C150 once that did not have an EGT meter. every 1000vt I pulled the
mixture back slowly until the engine started running rough, then pushed the
throttle back just 6mm. On my Cessna 182 I find it difficult to see where
the EGT peek. The AMO told me I ran the engine too lean and burned an
exhaust valve that cost me R34000.00 to repair (That is $4250)

KR> Valdosta crash

2009-06-14 Thread Willie van der Walt
I am not sure what the situation is with Bill Clapp and some other members
of the KR2 net group. It is not nice to see everybody having a go at him
every time he makes a posting. I drove almost 2000km to meet him and his dad
when they passed trough South Africa and I am sure I am not such a bad judge
of character. All the KR2 pilots here, who met him, liked him and his dad.

I have been flying my KR2 with a small leak in the header tank for some time
now. It was only leaking when I filled up over 40 liters. After I read this
tragic story I went and took the plane apart to remove the tank. I am now in
the process of sealing the whole tank over with Pratley Steel (Epoxy Glue)
as I am not sure where the AVGAS is coming from.

I can not believe how time flies! It is almost two years ago that I had the
engine out. I first fitted a Rotax 912UL. Then removed it again, due to mod
approvals and paperwork needed. The Limbach was overhauled and refitted. I
did all the ground runs and then took it to the skies today. 160 mph on the
downwind!!! On base reduced to 100 mph and on short finals 80 mph. Not much
of the 120 m runway was left when I came to a standstill. Into the wind is
downhill. Sometimes I think it is better to land uphill downwind.

I am not sure if it is still flying. Most of the KR2 planes built here in
the early 80"s was fitted with these tip tanks.

KR> RPM

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
  Hi Eric
My KR2 (Shrek) did the same at one stage and I found the spring that opens
the throttle came off. My system works like this: When you open the throttle
the slack on the cable allows the spring that is mounted on the other side
of the carb throttle lever to pull the lever open. The throttle cable
actualy pulls the carb closed. You can phone me @ 0835805703 if you like

Best is to post it on the KR2.net forum. To get the size right open your
picture in paint. Go to image and open stretc/skew. Here you select say 50%
for horizontal and vertical. Now save the picture under a new name. This is
the file that you then call up to past on the forum.

KR> My Baby Can Fly

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Congratulations again Jaco. It was so nice meeting you on Wednesday and
your plane looks great. Netters, Jaco took a KR2 S and put it on
Steroids. From a distance it looks standard but up close it is a lot bigger
than our little babies.

The 2.4 Liter Turbo Charged motor runs like a dream and I think it makes
about 110 hp. With the breaks on and the RPM almost at full throttle the
plane just wants to jump the chocks and go flying. He is making changes to
the duckting around the oil cooler and will be up for the 2nd flight soon.
Well done and let the KR fever spread. I noticed that it is

KR> VW Breather

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
I made a oil separator for my Hatz Bi-plane. Almost as described below but
fitted a small electric pump to pump the oil back to the sump. Due to the
sump pressure and Newtons law that flow takes the path of least resistance
the oil will not run back to the sump on its own. The separator works like a
cyclone with drop arresters inside. The pipe from your engine casing goes
into the side of the container and the oil return is at the bottom. Right at
the top is the air outlet. Inside you put Pot Scrapers with steel wool at
the top. Old Lycomings always use oil when the blow buy starts to increase.
Now I recover the oil in this way.

The problem with top mounted carbs are flooding. If you have gravity feed

KR> paint

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Mine developed some blisters from the sun when it was painted Grey. There
is a color temperature chart available. Stay away from the hot colors as
that will reduce the fiberglass life. White is the best for many reasons but
I picked Lomborghine Green for mine. Now called "Shrek". When we repainted I
sanded the old paint down and found the blisters are where the glass
delaminated from the foam. Keep in mind the expansion of the various
materials are not the same and if they are glued together it will act like a
bimetal strip that will bend or the bond will break.

KR> Question about wheel alignment

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Mount the wheels rims only and fix a straight edge on both wheels
horizontal. Make sure it is firm against the sides of each rim near the
center line. Now measure the distance between the tips of both sides of the
straight edges. With the difference in dimensions you can calculate the
angle for each side. If the undercarriage can not be adjusted manufacture an
aluminum taper wedge block. With four holes through that can be fitted
between undercarriage spring gear and the wheel hub mounting. Mine is about
50mm x 50mm and 2mm on one side and 6mm on the other side.

I think this is dangerous. The VNE is 200mph and you my pick up flutter
and then it will be all over. If you cruise is 165 surely the engine will
run well into the red if you push her down to 225mph. Do you have a VP prop

KR> Spinner

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
I would like to know what effect the spinner will have on my plane, apart
from making it look better. At the moment I fly without a spinner after mine
departed on a ground test run, and destroyed the prop. I did not fly with a
spinner yet and can therefor not make any comparison. I am scared that if
the spinner comes off in flight it will brake the prop and then kill me. I
tried the search and all I found is that the CHT will be higher due to
turbulent air flow. Nothing about speed.

KR> spinner

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
When my prop came off at 3000 RPM on the ground, it went through the prop
and both the spinner and the prop was destroyed. Some 15 or 18 years ago our
KR2 agent (Sakkie) was killed when the spinner came off during a test
flight. It broke the prop and then the engine mountings went, the engine
came off and the plane went down, tail first, like a spinning sycamore seed.
I still have pictures off the wreck to remind me to be careful.

I assume that the service is smooth and the airfoil unchanged. I did some
in flight tests with my open cockpit VP2 and found that if I put my hand on

KR> I logged 10 hours now....

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
I am proud to announce that I have logged 10 hours on Shrek now and that flying
the fast little KR2 is very exiting. I am going to increase the weight in the
passenger seat until I feel comfortable to take a real person. At the moment
the P-Prop is giving me the fast cruise (150 to 160mph) that I am looking for
but the climb out with no passenger and full tank is only between 600 and 700
ft pet min. at 1400 ft above sea level. The C of G calculations will allow me
more than the registered all-up weight allows for a pasanger. I find no
problems with cross wind landings and the wheelers are also easy due to the
flat approach. Although everything happens at double the speed in the KR2 I
find it easier to fly than my friends Busbaby (Kitfox 2). I made two flights to
other airfields, it was eventless and a lot of fun.

So a word of comfort to all of you that are thinking of converting to a KR2 it
is really not as difficult to fly as everybody said.

KR> What to do when the throttle cable in your KR2 snaps in mid air.

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
What to do when the throttle cable in your KR2 snaps in mid air. Last week
Thursday I was flying "Shrek" around Phalaborwa just for fun at 1000 vt AGL.
When I returned to the airfield, I noticed my speed was sitting at 160mph
and closed the throttle to slow down. Nothing happened. The engine was still
running at full power I joined on downwind and started preparing myself for
an emergency landing. I called on the radio for ground assistance in case
things got out of hand.

The throttle design is such that a spring opens the throttle and the lever
in the cockpit is to pull the throttle closed. In a way it is better than
the push rod idea but anyhow.

I planed to turn the magnetos off on a glide slope that I knew would take
me to the runway without power. As it is, the KR picks up speed even with
power off if the glide is not flat enough. The fire department was getting
ready as I went around a couple of times at flat speed. During my last go
around I pulled the cable housing out of the lever box (with my one hand)
and managed to remove the metal cap over the cable housing end. This exposed
4mm of the cable tip. I clamped the 1.7mm cable between my thumb and
forefinger and pulled the inner out. The power came down and I could use the
accelerator like that. Now on finals I realized that at some stage I will
need my left hand to apply brakes and cut the engine. So on short finals I
let go of the cable, the revs shot up but before much happened I cut the
engine at the magnetos. A perfect dead stick landing followed and pushed the
plane back to the hanger.

There are few things to learn from this.

1.. Don't panic and make hasty decisions. Take your time and plan your
crash ( it may not be one)
2.. Practice engine off approaches so you get to know your aircraft and
glide ratios
3.. Carry enough fuel so you can use it if you need to stay in the air
longer than planed.
4.. Wear brown pants.

KR> "Shreg" Round 5 perfect....thanks to all

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Now I am a happy man. Round no. 5 was perfect. I took off at about 17h00 and
climbed to 3000 ft AGL the rate was only 500 ft/min. and full throttle 2700 rpm
@ 90 mph. At altitude I pulled the power back slowly to almost idle speed about
1200 rpm. I kept the nose above the horizon at the same angle as taxi. When I
reached 58 mph I ran out off elevator and the KR mashed down at 600 ft/min. I
kept the wings level with small rudder inputs. The team suggested stall x 1.2,
that gives me 70 mph.

Well I did a long finals a lot flatter than yesterday and managed to fly nose
high at 80 mph On short finals I Closed the throttle completely but the speed
stayed at 80. In my mind a moved the threshold closer about 100m so aimed to
land before the actual runway. Ground effect started about 3m above ground and
I floated at a 65 mph and was in the perfect position to do a three pointer. I
slowly reduced back pressure on the stick and the plane touched down on the
main wheels at about 55. There was enough runway ahead not to use brakes. When
the tail came down at about 40mph I pulled all the way back and applied brakes.
This time "Shreg" stopped with about 25% runway left.

Thanks to every KRnetter that gave advice and helped me to sort the landing
roll out.

Regards

Willie

KR> "Shreg" went off the end of the runway

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Thanks for all your trouble Ray. I'll contact them for prices and see
after shipping and tax whre it takes me. Apart from the cost I have nothing
to loose. If it works. A lot to gain.

I managed to land today using 75% of the runway. See my story posted
earlier.

KR> "Shreg" Round no. 7.. final report

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Round no. 7 took me to Tzaneen this morning, where there is also a long runway.
Riaan went with me in his low wing Technam 2000. My radio did not work well so
he did all the comms. It was my 1st flight away from base and then you sit at
3500ft and here all the noises and smell all the funny things and slowly get
more scared as you look for landing spots on the way. (All in the mind) If
Riaan did not fly next to me I would have turned back. We landed at Tzaneen and
after one cold drink each came back. Now the race was on. I called base when he
was still like 5 miles out. On both landings I used less than 75% of the
runway. Indicated airspeed was between 140 and 150mph

Thanks to all who helped me to get to fly this wonderfull little craft.

KR> Flat spot.....no power!

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
During my flight to Tzaneen again yesterday I did a low level fly pass. I did
not do a shoot-up. The speed went up to 280 mph so I pulled back on the
throttle to keep the rev's below 3200. I pulled up and took power again but
with full throttle the rpm stayed at 2200 and did not want to increase. I
planed a low power landing but on short finals the speed was still high so I
pulled the throttle closed. As I moved the throttle through 50% mark the revs
came up again and everything was normal. It is like a flat spot. It happened
during take off again when I took power and moved the throttle open it only
went to 2200 and no more. I closed the throttle and re-opened it, then the rpm
went up normal. What could cause this? The Limbach is fitted with a Marvel
Shebler carburetor and I used carb heat on the decent.

KR> My 1st flight !!!!!!

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Hi to all you KR mad people

Yesterday was a very special day for me. After I replaced the damaged
propeller ,that I reported about three weeks ago, I decided its time to do
it. The day everybody looks forward too. That 1st flight.

I did about twelve fast taxi runs with the tail up over the last three
days. Yesterday at 17h15 the wind was on the nose at about 5 mph and runway
01 is uphill. After my run-up checks I went onto the center line and opened
the throttle slowly and gradually until it was fully open. At about 60 mph
she started dancing and I knew she wanted to fly as much as I wanted to. I
pulled back on the stick and took off like a pro. The speed went up to 80
mph and I kept it that speed during the climb. Just as I decided to turn to
downwind there was this vibration, almost like a buffeting, stuttering,
shaking that took place and I turned towards the field facing downhill,
looking for a place to crash. The Kruger National Park was right below me
and those Mopani trees are not nice to land in, not to mention the wild
animals. But just then it was as smooth as anything when I pulled the
throttle back to 75%. On the downwind leg the speed very quickly went up to
about 135mph.

I turned base and pulled the throttle back. The speed did not want to
decrease. On finals I was still sitting at 120 mph. So on medium to short
finals I did a side-slip, that worked very well. Went over the fence and
numbers at 80 mph. Throttle closed and just flew the main wheels onto the
deck. One of the best landings I ever made. Shreg kept on running up the
runway as-if it was rocket powered. I was too scared to use the brakes. As
soon as the indicated speed went below 40mph I lowered the tail and pulled
the stick all the way back before applying brakes. I turned in the loop and
taxied back to the apron where a welcoming party was waiting. My legs were
jumping and there was no room for blood in my adrenaline filled vanes. I sat
in the plane with my friends standing around me, all talking fast, excited
and loud. Asking a lot of quistions and they did not know I could not get
out.

Today the weather is bad and could not attempt another flight but I am
still on a high. I could not find the reason for the vibration. The prop
bolts are tight. The engine mounting is okay. There is no out of limits mag
drop.

KR> Battery placement

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
I made a bracket and fitted the battery on the firewall ,on the engine
side, in the middle between the engine mounting legs. The cables to the
starter are heavy and so is the battery. To save weight I also used a bike
battery and kept the cables as short as possible.

KR> "Shreg" went off the end of the runway

2008-10-12 Thread Willie van der Walt
Today was the 4th flight with "shreg" and it ended in the felt on the extended
runway. I came in on finals and did a side slip in a 75 degree X-wind. The
speed was down to 90 mph when I crossed the fence and I was about 1m above the
runway over the numbers. I was hoping to loose the extra 10 mph but no way. The
throttle was closed at idle about 1000 rpm but the plane kept on floating. I
then put the wheels onto the runway and held it firmly on the ground. The speed
was indicating 60 while running with the tail up. There was still about 600m of
runway left. I pulled back slightly to apply brakes but then the wheels hardly
touched the ground and I could feel The KR wanted to get airborne again. At
40mph I could pull back on the stick and apply enough brakes to almost lift the
tail. I had no direct forward visibility over the nose and was shocked to see
the loop entrance, at the holding point, coming past at about 20mph. I went off
the tar into the long grass and almost flipped over as the grass grabbed the
wheels, spats and wings all at the same time. This was a quick stop. Even the
engine stopped. Hennie repaired the prop well because the tips held up well
against the grass. Only some marks on the red tip paint. I pushed the plane
back to the hanger and left it there for the night as I had enough excitement
for one day.

In summery. I need to get the speed down to 80 over the fence or go around and
try again if I am still above over the numbers. Wish I could fit airbrakes like
we had on the gliders when I sailed at Donaldson Dam.

If I can not get landings right within the next 3 or 4 times I am going to fit
a belly plate brake or something.

What can I do to loose the lift after round out?
