KR> RE: Weight Testing.
This really hasn't a lot to do with KR's, but wanted to mention a setup that was used in a Velocity. There was some study about "deep stall" condition where the canard airplanes stall, then go flat and come down vertically like a leaf falling from a tree. The airplane will not pitch over to recover in certain balance conditions. This was tested using a sliding weight to find how the aircraft reacted to different balance levels. The weight had a screw jack that allowed the pilot to move the weight to change and hold in different locations in the airplane. Yep, he found out what deep stall was all about and went clear to the ground. Actually water as I remember it. There was an article in SA or Kitplanes years ago on this. Seems the airplane received very little damage after falling vertically from several thousand feet! Bet he needed a change of britches after that!! I still need to test my plane to the 1200 # gross weight that I have arbitrarily set for it. I tried to go to the EAA site for help, but they have so many log ins for so many different parts of the web site that I could not find anything. So my question to all you who are currently flying your KR and have established your Gross Weight, how did you test for that weight? Dad bought this kit back in the mid to late 70s when he was spraying urethane foam and I was dragracing VWs and taking flying lessons. He thought we had a good skills match for a father/son collaboration and we did, but for a number of reasons the project never quite got off the ground. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) So the parts kicked around for a while and got lost among the rest of his collection. I believe the kits are still complete as he bought them. They've been moved at least twice from building to building, always under cover except for the photoshoot which can be viewed at http://s1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff385/neilho/. Except for the plexi bubble, they're in their original packaging. One of the wood packages is about 60" long, the other about 12'. Some of the 12' long pieces of wood have water stains over the last 4" or so on one end (see the photo), but all the wood is now dry, straight and in excellent condition. In the "castings kit" are some castings, some aluminum piano hinges, some aluminum bar stock (6061T6, I believe) and some aluminum extrusions of unknown alloy. There's probably a parts list, packing list and instructions somewhere too, but we haven't found them yet and don't know what all these parts are. So, we have a few questions, including: Are these parts indeed for a KR1? What are they? Are they still useful to anyone, and if so, whom? etc, etc. Any comments, information and opinions would be very welcome. I can also be reached by email at nei...@innevi.com and at 802.685.3129. KR> Foam cutting large scale
Interesting web site with that hot wire material. You guys aren't thinking your going to use this wire for HOT wire cutting are you? I think this is to be used in some sort of machine that would move the wire like a saw blade, similar to a band saw. Trying to heat this wire to cut with shouldn't work because it is coated with diamond (or whatever) that would make the wire surface cooler. The surface temperature is what your trying to cut with on a hot wire. If your getting accurate cuts with 4' chunks of foam, that should be fine as you wouldn't have to glue many sections together to get the full wing span. Please correct me if I am wrong. So one can imagine there has been some growing pains while attempting to get things moving again. Between a blown out knee, moving in and out of hangars for due to potential flooding, and now with moving into a larger facility in attempt to streamline and be more productive, this has been a HUGE undertaking. We are working diligently to get the remaining orders out that we have and anticipate having everything caught up by the end of the year or shortly after depending on temperatures for the glass work. (Thank you for your patience to those we have outstanding orders with) Currently there is myself, and my partner Eric primarily doing EVERYTHING for production! We do not have enough revenue to hire employees as there still is not enough volume as we attempt to reenergize the KR design in the homebuilt community. This IS NOT our primary method for making a living. Eric is still on active duty with the US Navy and lives a couple hours away. He is instrumental in taking care of all website and administrative duties for nV Aero. He travels to the hangar to help with production, etc. when his time permits based upon his current Op Temp. Otherwise, production is basically me. I do the ordering, stocking, fabricating and any other gopher jobs required. We have some items contracted out such as welding, precision machining, etc. Eric and I have a desire to provide quality, affordable parts and materials for people to build their KR aircraft. We certainly didn't get into this to get rich. The first thing to understand is nV Aero does not own the rights to the plans for any of the KR aircraft. Jeanette has a price that she sells the plans to us. Based upon that price we charge enough to cover our shipping and administrative costs (picking up plans from RR which is 40 miles away, and other expenses associated with packaging and shipping.) Due to printing costs Jeanette has raised the price of the KR-1 plans to us. The drawings and additional copies she provides are at current market rates from the printers. The book is the same as everyone else has received for the past several years but those are rapidly running out so I anticipate another increase once the current inventory is depleted. This brings me to Mr. Caudle's post. I do feel he should have contacted me first before posting to the net with his "displeasure". I think I addressed it fairly well above but let me be clear, WE buy the plans for $95. We sell at $114.95. We found that is easier for flat rate shipping for our shopping cart system due to the various destinations in the US and abroad. So, $25 for "shipping" less up to 6% for credit card processing if a Corporate card is used. This leaves us $108.05. Subtract $5.70 for Priority Mail with delivery confirmation leaves $102.35 less $95 for RR leaves us $7.35 for our time to pick up plans from RR, print packing lists (The packing list was with Mr. Caudle's registration page), registration pages, package and get them to the post office or however we ship. Clearly we are making a TON of money for the hassle. I am a little displeased myself with Mr. Caudle's post given our original correspondence. Nothing was misleading when he inquired about the plans and their quality. I guess I should have been VERY specific as to the additional pages showing the new dimensions from the KR-2 changes with drawings instead of photos. You can see my email to him below. BEGIN MSG. I have KR plans purchased directly from Jeanette. I gave her $60 I think it was, and she gave me the plans in person. As odd as this may sound, I didn't buy my KR drawings because I was wanting a KR. I buy plans mostly as a collector, used more for education. I am a member of the KR group because I enjoy the groups activity, the "get-r-done" attitude, and the ideas that come from the members as they build their aircraft. The KR has evolved into something other than what the plans offer. I don't think you want to build either a KR1 or 2 without a HUGE dose of internet research, going to the yearly fly-in, or visiting one on one with those who have been there. If you don't do at least 2 of the three you will be sorry down the line. What do I think of the plans? I think I could build a rocket ship of an airplane from them using the new airfoil. To power the airplane I would use the 120 HP Yamaha Vector snowmobile engine like is being used in the gyrocopters. I bet it would cruise well past redline. What am I building? Streak Shadow from an old kit. I want to fly from my property (short) and be able to cruise at least 100 mph. I have my eyes on the Yamaha for this airplane too. KR> DA sander
A better, but slightly more expensive DA is this: _http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98895_ (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98895) They used to make one a bit more expensive than this one and that is the model I have. Seems like it was $60 for the one I have. Mechanically I think they are identical so that isn't really an issue. I think palm sanders are easier to hold on to for an extended period of time, they are easier to control, and I think they get into smaller places. One thing to remember on DA sanders. Don't bear down on them as it defeats the orbital part of the sander. You should be able to tell when it quits doing the orbital "jitter" and back off on the pressure. It doesn't take muscle to run one. They are also not for getting long flat areas straight. The footprint of the sander is too small for that. They do make a 10" version of these, but they are pricey. A couple hundred bucks isn't uncommon. I don't think one is needed for a KR unless you are a tool guy and just have to have it. Also, a DA sander is an air hog. I have a 5 HP dual stage quincy (about $1500) and not a problem, but I also have a 5 HP single stage, two cylinder compressor (about $350) and it won't keep up. You can go a while on the smaller compressor, but not continuous. They use air almost as fast as a small sand blaster! Kevin Golden Harrisonville, MO In a message dated 12/7/2009 8:24:21 A.M. KR> Paint :Imron
DA is short for "dual action" sander. It is body shop lingo to describe the air powered sander that has been around a long time. I have never heard of using one with wet or dry paper, but I guess you could. I would think it would sling filthy water in your face, all over the shop, and inside your project. Watching out for the sharp edges is very good advice. Sanders eat through these areas very quickly. Sort of like when you cover a fabric wing and you avoid sanding on the ribs much to keep from eating through the fabric. Power sanding tools can do a lot of damage in a hurry if not watching what your doing. Be careful. Kevin Golden Harrisonville, MO In a message dated 12/6/2009 8:42:50 P.M. Central Standard Time, le62...@yahoo.com writes: A DA sander is an air sander. It is usually with a six inch pad for six inch wet or dry sandpaper. When you sand the clear coat you want to use it wet. This keeps the paper from clogging. I use the DA sander on flat surfaces only when sanding clearcoats. It is easy to sand through the clear coat on sharp edges so I do the sharp edges and turns by hand with a foam sanding block. A DA sander is a round sander which is adjustable to different speeds. KR> KR-1 Plans Available
GOOD DEAL! KR information should be public domain anyway. The original KR is outdated to the point they are more of a GUIDE than PLANS. I believe this "loyalty" is misguided and silly. There is a Yahoo group that has a bunch of free downloadable plans from years past and this might be a good place for the KR plans. This site can be found here: _http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/cfair/?yguid=62311250_ (http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/cfair/?yguid=62311250) Bottom line: I don't think if the plans are given away free that more KRs will be built. I'm also thinking that I'll post it on a file sharing website like mediafire so those without bittorrent can get it. The download is 208mb and includes all of the manuals and prints required for the KR-1. There are actually 2 different sets of plans that I scanned. The scan quality on some of the plans is lacking so there is a B&W and Colour set. I'm planning on digitally retouching all of the older prints both for clarity and also so they can be compressed more, for ease of downloading. I'm putting the plans on the net because I'm irritated at how long it took the get the plans from Rand Robinson, there was no chance of telephone correspondance and I was irritated by the serious lack of quality in the plans. There appreared to be missing pages in the construction manual and the drawings were very helter skelter. The construction manual even references drawings that apparently don't exist. If anyone has a set of KR-2 or KR-2S plans they would be willing to loan me I would love to get a set of those up on the internet. KR> push pull cables
These cables are available from Wicks and Aircraft Spruce. I am going to use them on an original design just because it would make cable routing easier and the wings fold something like the Kitfox. This made setup and adjustment very easy. I don't think I would use it on a KR. The KR system looks to be simple and if done correctly it would be very smooth and not bind at all. I have only flown one flying machine with push pull cables (Pioneer Flightstar) and it was stiff in the controls. KR> Rand Robinson??? Just my view.
This is my view. I am not building a KR, but do have the plans. First, I would not bring Mercedes into this. There was an article this week that Mercedes has the worst reliability of any car available in America. It used to be Jaguar, but I guess they are spreading the "love". Now the KR's Next, I think the problem with the KR is the design needs updated. The construction drawings you buy today isn't what I would build. I guess you can build a plans stock airplane, but there has been so much done to improve the design that I wouldn't. Last, I offer a resolution. In an ideal world the plans should be sold or turned over to those who keep the design alive. Those who show up at the national meet with a flying airplane are the people I speak of. If it wasn't for these people the design would have ended up like so many other designs, just a memory. The plans could be purchased from a group of KR enthusiasts with updates being done on a regular basis. If Jeanette wants to stay in it for the $$, give her some of the proceeds from the sales. I think everyone involved would benefit. Those who are wanting plans could get them right away, Jeanette would get her money, and the design would improve through updates from knowledgeable people. Thank you to those have put so much of themselves into the KR design. Kevin in Missouri ARUP ** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.
KR> Rand Robinson??? Just my view.
As I mentioned some planes just became a memory. To use an example of this. I use the Charles Fauvel designs. Charles may not even be known by anyone in this group, but I believe he should be known by everyone. He was a French man that designed many different flying wings. Some sailplanes, some powered planes. The most popular is a sailplane that a few were built by homebuilders. KR> now Tomahawk- of subject
I did most of my instruction in a Tomahawk, then bought a Grumman Tr2. The Tr2 was much more sensitive in pitch, but I quickly learned to love it. Only complaint I had with the Tomahawk was the nose gear wanted to shimmy at times. Those that have flown it, have you ever done a HARD full stall and look back at the tail? Yowwza! Kevin Golden Harrisonville, MO -Original Message- From: jscott.pi...@juno.com To: kr...@mylist.net Sent: Wed, 21 Feb 2007 9:56 AM Subject: Re: KR> now Tomahawk- of subject I own a Tomahawk and fly it at least as much as the KR. I haven't figured out how to make a bad landing in it. The oversized tail is so effective through the landing and the gear is so soft, you have to be really ham fisted to screw it up. The Tomahawk is a bit more pitch sensitive than most trainers, so the beginning student struggles a bit more learning the plane. It was built that way to make the tail large enough to be fully effective on take off without it being in the prop wash. The "T" tail design was as dumb idea that was done for marketing purposes as it was built during the hay day of the 727 and DC-9, both "T" tail jets. The "spring" trim was also a bad idea. While it is functional, it is nowhere near as effective as a trim tab. I often times introduce new pilots to the Tomahawk. They are literally terrified by the stories from others that once flew them as primary students. I take them through a stall series and maybe a spin entry and recovery. They come back wondering why all the horror stories. The Tomahawk spins just fine. However, recovery from a fully developed spin requires doing the right thing, then being patient. It won't fly itself out like the Cessnas. If you want to do spin training in one, I recommend doing it with a CFI experienced in spin training. Piper designed it to be a hands on flyer after interviewing CFIs and finding that they wanted an airplane that students have to fly and handle right to make it perform. They designed what the CFIs asked for, then got beat up because the CFIs and students didn't like it. Now that you have some KR time behind you, go get in a Tomahawk again. You'll wonder how you could have ever struggled with such a pussycat. It amazes me that a bunch of pilots that are building and flying one of the least stable and most pitch sensitive airplanes in the homebuilt market will line up to bad mouth a trainer for having the same trait, only to a much lesser extent. It wasn't the airplane that was causing you to struggle as a student. It was the student skills. The airplane was making you into a better pilot by making you struggle, but also being forgiving in the process. The amplified student horror stories have made the Tomahawk one of the best buys in the GA market by keeping the prices depressed. After several hundred hours in my Tomahawk, the only real gripe I have is the lack of yaw stability in turbulance. It excels at the Bonanza waltz in rough air. Interestingly enough, the "T" tailed Skipper that everyone thinks is a Beech Tomahawk doesn't have the same issues. Oh yes, and I do have a Tomahawk and Skipper both available for sale. The Tomahawk is mine, and the Skipper belongs to a friend. I have done most of the work on both of them over the last several years, including top overhauls. Now, let's move the discussion back to KRs. Or we could search for someone elses baby to call ugly. :o) Jeff Scott N1213W N2398N -- "Joseph H. KR> carbon fibre tail spring
I hope someone hasn't suggested this as I haven't been reading all posts. If you want the tail spring to be composite, why not make it out of round fiberglass rod? Those are easily found in aircraft supply catalogs or through industrial suppliers. It could be set up somewhat like a Quickie but would have to build a mount on the fuselage to hold the rod. Might not save any weight in the end. Just an idea. Kevin.

KR> RE: Nikasil...
I have read everything I can find on the net with Nikasil. In the model airplane world anything with a coating on the cylinder is considered cheap. I think mostly because on model airplane engines they do the block and cylinder in one piece then coat the cylinder to get the hardness needed. It is a very cheap way of building an engine (low parts count), but is very lightweight. I still think of the Nikasil cylinder as a throw away part. It isn't shop rebuildable if damaged and new cylinders will have to be bought. I guess that makes it not so cheap. One web site did claim the Nikasil cylinder is 2-3 times stronger than chrome plated cylinders. Bottom line is any cast iron cylinder engine converted to these aluminum cylinders will be lighter weight. I may buy a set of Nikasil cylinders myself. Nikasil isn't a material, it's a coating that's often applied to aluminum cylinders to improve wear resistance. Porsche Nikasiled just about every one of its cylinders at one time, and I don't think they did it because it's cheap! They did it so they could use lightweight aluminum cylinders that still have good longevity in the place of cast iron cylinders. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikasil for details. The article mentions that it fell from favor due to problems associated with high sulfur fuels, but 100LL probably doesn't have that problem. It's also somewhat tricky to apply. I'm working on a UAV engine project in which the folks that are building the engine insist that there's only one place in the world that knows how to Nikosil plate correctly. KR> What to do when the throttle cable in your KR2 snaps in midair. (Ignition)
I had it happen on my Grumman Tr2 within an hour of coming out of an inspection/carb rebuild. Grummans have a push-pull but also have a spring to lever the butterfly to the wide open position. I am glad it had the spring. My boss here at work had a C150 land in his back pasture 2 weeks ago because the throttle came loose and it WASN'T spring loaded to wide open. Seems odd to me that there would be such a setup on certified aircraft. That is the one thing I don't like about 2 stroke carburetors such as the Mikuni. They are internally loaded to fail shut. Yes, I have flown them many times, but always with the thought of "what if". ___ About a month ago there was talk about a better ignition system. What to do when the throttle cable in your KR2 snaps in mid air. Last week Thursday I was flying "Shrek" around Phalaborwa just for fun at 1000 vt AGL. When I returned to the airfield, I noticed my speed was sitting at 160mph and closed the throttle to slow down. Nothing happened. The engine was still running at full power I joined on downwind and started preparing myself for an emergency landing. I called on the radio for ground assistance in case things got out of hand. The throttle design is such that a spring opens the throttle and the lever in the cockpit is to pull the throttle closed. In a way it is better than the push rod idea but anyhow. I planed to turn the magnetos off on a glide slope that I knew would take me to the runway without power. As it is, the KR picks up speed even with power off if the glide is not flat enough. The fire department was getting ready as I went around a couple of times at flat speed. During my last go around I pulled the cable housing out of the lever box (with my one hand) and managed to remove the metal cap over the cable housing end. This exposed 4mm of the cable tip. I clamped the 1.7mm cable between my thumb and forefinger and pulled the inner out. The power came down and I could use the accelerator like that. Now on finals I realized that at some stage I will need my left hand to apply brakes and cut the engine. So on short finals I let go of the cable, the revs shot up but before much happened I cut the engine at the magnetos. A perfect dead stick landing followed and pushed the plane back to the hanger. There are few things to learn from this. 1.. Don't panic and make hasty decisions. Take your time and plan your crash ( it may not be one) 2.. Practice engine off approaches so you get to know your aircraft and glide ratios 3.. Carry enough fuel so you can use it if you need to stay in the air longer than planed. 4.. Kevin. -Original Message- From: av...@telkomsa.net To: kr...@mylist.net Sent: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 11:01 PM Subject: Re: KR> "lawnmower" ignition Brian The aerovee lawnmower ignition has no method of advance at all. They use it as the backup ignition to the electronic unit which also has no advance but will produce a spark at low revs. I have a friend who recently had the electronic unit fail and in the process of finding the fault cranked the battery down to a point where it would no longet turn the motor over. Trying to prop start it on the mag system was futile as he just couldn't spin it fast enough to make it produce any spark. It aparently needs somewhere around 300rpm. We have just gone through this whole ignition thing on corvaircraft but I will risk it again. Take a look at the system that is installed on Serge's plane. It is a simple transistor controlled coil ignition triggered by an inductive pick up. It also sports a ready made centrifugal advance mechanism. This system has been used here by many builders and has been proven during more than 1500 hours of flight without a single failure on VW motors as well as a honda auto conversion. It does need a 12V supply though. KR> KR PLans on CD
This happens all the time. There are bootleg plans being sold of about anything you could imagine on ebay. Plans for things other than airplanes too. I have bought a few plans on CD from ebay auctions with no intent to build the plane at all. I just want to see how another designer has done something. Most drawings on CD are old out of date plans and I wouldn't think anyone would build these designs today. I may be wrong, but I think the plans we are talking about here are the KR2, not the KR2S. As I have said before, surely no one would start from scratch and build a KR2 as it was designed in the early 70s. The KR2S with new airfoils isn't really a KR2. It is a different, much better bird with simularities as I see it. I rarely chime in so since I am now I want to THANK those who posted photos of the KR meet in IL. KR> Anti junk/disabled anything laws LONG
I don't even mind the junk cars as long as they are kept straightened up in a line with the grass kept down around them. I have rebuilt a lot of "JUNK" items to like new condition including cars, tractors, etc and if there are laws requiring those items to be destroyed, then none of the rebuilds would have been possible. I would bet that if I were to restore an antique car, use it until I drove it 150,000 miles, then I still wouldn't have created as much polution as 1 new car being manufactured. Mine is that laws such as this is where we all have had our rights or civil liberties encroached upon. Where are my rights when I cannot utilize my own property, that I have paid for, for my entertainment or enjoyment as long as I do not cause damage or harm to anyone. One could argue they are "damaged" from having to view my plane. In that case I could give a rats and they should close the curtain or get a life. I whole heartedly agree that there is a limit to what one could/ should do in public view. Your statement regarding abandoned or junk cars, etc. within a city limit or neighborhood certainly would affect property values and therefore damaging to others. But something like building a car, aircraft, boat, or other constructive like hobby does not fall into this category as long as the property in public view is maintained and not used as a junk yard. This type of abuse of the political system is indicative of how liberal our society has become in regards to the bleeding hearts or Democrats who are, in my opinion the root cause of why our society has declined so markedly in moral and ethical conviction. They must all be members of the ACLU or any of these other organizations who think everybody owes them something and will file a law suit just because they can. I also have been on the enforcement side but there is a Reasonable Man's rule that must apply. The problem is, there are very few reasonable men in the political arena. I ordinarily abstain from this type of discussion on the net as it is a waste of my time. However, this particular type of abuse of the system irritates the fire out of me. Seems like in the 60s there was a lot of homebuilts being flipped over and loaded with sandbags. I had the thought that it was encouraged by the FAA, even on proven designs. KR> spinner front bulkhead?
Mark, First I will say I haven't done this myself, but have seen it done, and have stood in amazement. There is a Yahoo group called "metalshapers". The members of this active group have metal bashing meets in differing parts of the country. It so happened there was one about 10 miles from my home, sobeing facinated with anything like this I had to go. There was a guy there showing how to do metal turning. He had a wooden mold (some may call it a buck) that he formed a bell with. It was amazing to see this bell being formed in less than a minute. I would think that a wooden form shaped like you need for a bulkhead would be easy to make on a wood lathe. Then get your metal and form the edge around the wooden mold using the metal turning techique. I am not sure what make-up the metal was (hardness) but I would assume fairly soft stuff was used. There has to be a hole in the center to mount your metal to the form for turning, but that shouldn't matter for this. Food for thought... KR> Foreign made tools
Buying a car new, as of a few years ago, they are required to tell you "country of origin" and percentage of. The problem I have noticed is that lets say Dodge builds the full size Ram truck in Mexico. It is built in a Dodge factory, so I don't think they tell you it was assembled in Mexico. On this subject, years ago there was a buddy of mine who had a Chevy LUV truck. He LUVED that truck and asked me one time why anyone would buy one of those Japanese trucks when they can buy a good "chevy" truck like a LUV. He turned white when I showed him in plain site under the hood where it said "made in Japan." Buyer beware. Kevin again. Back to KRs
