[lace] fine coloured thread

2005-06-29 Thread Jacqui Southworth
Tamara said:
For cotton, I'd use William Hall's 80/2, if it's still available,
supplemented by the Cotona 80/2. I have a few spools and partial spools
(they're v large) of Wm Hall thread, which Brenda told me was meant for
weaving, but it works very well as a lace thread. And the colours are
great - strong and vibrant, which is why they work well with the wimpy
colours of Cotona. But I got mine from Jacqui Southworth (Larkholme
Lace) in '98, which is why I'm not sure of its availability *now*. The
label on the spool says:
Wm Hall Co. (Monsall) LTD; Monsall Mills, Newton Heath, M/c.10
But I think Jacqui told me she got them in Manchester

I don't have any colours at all now, or even white, just a few spools of ecru.
He can't find anyone to spin it onto the small reels we use, so I won't
be able to get any more once his stock has run out - a shame because (IMO) it
is the best Bucks Point thread I've ever used. I also have 120/2 in
white which I use for my honiton. He has quite a large stock of that so I will
be selling it for a while yet.
Colours in 80/2 are difficult to find and I think the range in Cotona is
insipid. I have used Madeira Rayon 40 for Bucks but it works up more like a
50 Cotton than an 80. For bright colours the biggest choice is silk.

Hi All,

I bought a pair of these bobbins on ebay a few weeks ago. I found them a
little chunky (diameter 3/8ths inch) and somewhat longer (5.25 inches
without spangle) than the other midlands bobbins that I use - they'll
be fine for me for gimp though. You may need to take this into
consideration if you like your bobbins to be compatible size-wise.

They were quickly despatched and very well packaged.

Tufnell appears to be the one then. Also, looking at the website, the two

added extra, the price isn't too bad to slowly work my way up to lots of

Of course it would be nice for some of us if everyone in the world

Hi Helen !

I also was smitten with the glass bobbin fever a few years ago! Like Margot, I
loved the sound of the bobbins. But one day, four hit the floor at the same
time and broke (can't remember the details of that disaster!) Lucky for me,
the maker promised to mend any I broke, so I had them mended, and then promptly
broke another one. Since then, I've been discouraged about using them, AND
have pretty much moved to continental bobbins anyway.

So the short answer to your question is that these bobbins aren't any more
expensive than others, but they are more fragile, so the expense will be in
breakage.

Clay said So the short answer to your question is that these bobbins aren't

But on the other hand, I have probably a dozen glass bobbins and in 25+ years
have only ever broken one. That was on my pillow, inside a bag, on a table
and I was leaning over to see what someone the on the other side was doing and
quite without thinking about it put my hand down on the bag to keep my
balance. The bobbin broke clean across.

However, in the last year or so I have had a run of wooden bobbins breaking -
four now, I think, so like any other tool for any craft there is a need to
replace at intervals. Aren't we lucky! I'm just a little extra careful with
my
special bobbins, whether that special-ness is from extravagance or sentiment.

I've got several glass bobbins, but haven't had the courage to use them.
Additionally, they're not all the same length or thickness. I have one,
bought on ebay, which origiated from the IOLI convention of 1989 hosted by
the Rocky Mountains Lace Guild, which has a spiky blue flower on one side.
So it would be impractical for use.

The details for Tuffnell Glass are:

Tuffnell Glass

www.tuffnellglass.co.uk

no email address on his brochure/flyer (which only shows his beads).

Telephone: +44 (0) 1377 240745
Fax:: +44 (0) 1377 240746

I bought a couple of bobbins from him at Poole Bobbin Lace Day in June,
along with some rather nice beads. The bobbins I chose have a fixed cameo
plaque instead of loose spangles, so they'd feel completely different to
anything else on my pillow. He said if the bobbins break, he'll replace
them.

Ah, but Clay, you can get continental glass bobbins from Tom Clarke!
He sells at IOLI and at Ithaca, and probably at other venues

mend any I broke, so I had them mended, and then promptly broke
another one. Since then, I've been discouraged about using them,
AND have pretty much moved to continental bobbins anyway.

[lace] Calm (logarithmic) Sea and Prosperous (Dieppe?) Voyage

2005-06-29 Thread Aurelia Loveman
Dear all -- With apologies to Felix Mendelssohn
for the title of the above Subject, I need some
help on that voyage! As everybody who has talked
to me for the last month or two knows, I have
been making a fan leaf for the wonderful set of
fan-sticks made for me long ago by John Brooker.
My idea was (is) to make a BL net background
appliqué with fern motifs done in needle lace. A
couple of NL motifs being done and turned out OK,
I set to work on the net, using a logarithmic
grid, gold-metallic thread (hateful stuff, but
beautiful -- what can you do?), and what I
thought was Dieppe ground. Floated happily along
on that gorgeous calm logarithmic sea till about
halfway through the leaf, and it suddenly came
over me that was I ABSOLUTELY SURE that I was
doing Dieppe ground?

Beautiful it was, but was it Dieppe? Did it matter? Of course it mattered!

Ran to Sally Johansen in a panic, and lo and
behold, sure enough, it wasn't Dieppe ground. It
is a beautiful net, but WHAT IS IT? I am doing
CTC-pin-CT.

Help!

Aurelia

Dear Aurelia,

What a prohetic name you have! Gold ground by gold woman! Anyway, if you have
invented something new, then, it must be Love ground!

Dieppe is CT pin CTT, yes? So your transformation is entirely unexplainable.

Wll... If you *do* know English, it would be appreciated if you
posted in a version of it which is easily found in dictionaries :)
That's because those same people who may have to post in their native
language without any fall out, may also be struggling to read the
answers in English and using the dictionary to help them with it.

I used to read the German lace list for a while. Even my passive
knowledge of that language is wobbly, and active nonexistent, so it was
a slow process, but I managed. If, however, someone wrote to the list
in German slang, I'd have been lost entirely...

Hello everybody!

I am having loads of trouble with my computer and can only get online once a

properly. However, I am still intending to participate in Secret Pal etc, but
please don't be worried if I can't post things online as quickly as I should.

If anyone needs me my telephone number is 01594 510519 (UK). If I have real
problems, I will try to get in touch with Brenda by phone.

Thank you.

[lace-chat] RE International fleet review/Trafalgar 200

2005-06-29 Thread Carole Eamey

Hi Everyone

I'm new to the list have been lurking for a while.I live in Portsmouth
have been attending a 3 day lace summer school at my lace teacher's home in
Lee-on-the-Solent.
We all walked down to the sea front yesterday lunchtime and watched part of
the review. The Queen was onboard HMS Endurance, the ice-patrol ship, owing
to the fact that the Royal yacht is no more.
We also saw the tall ship SS Turk which took the part of the re-enactment
later on.
Most of us went to see the fireworks in the evening and got home VERY late
so I'm not sure how good the standard of our lacemaking was today!

Subject: [lace-chat] International Fleet Review/Trafalgar 200

As part of Trafalgar 200, 100 warships from 35 nations will be reviewed off
the south coast of England by the Queen tomorrow. The only continent not
represented is the antarctic.

There's to be a re-enactment of a naval battle of the Napoleonic period,
but

to avoid upsetting anyone, the opposing fleets are to be referred to as red
and blue.

All large ships/boats have to be escorted to their moorings in the Solent
for the review. It seems someone still has a sense of humour - a photograph
has been published with the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle being
escorted to her mooring by the tugboatd Trafalgar. But you can't believe
any photo these days.

The real celebration for the Battle of Trafalgar is in October.

[lace-chat] SP Thank You

2005-06-29 Thread T F
Hello Pat,

It's was so exciting to find out who my first secret pal was, and thank you so
much for the wonderful items. The bobbin is exquisite and I will treasure it
forever, the engraving makes it that much more special! Also, the tea towel is
stunning and very interesting, as is the postcard. All the facts, what a
wonderful place to call home.

I am so sorry to hear about your Aunt, it is always hard to lose those someone
even when they life a long, full life.

I hope your kitchen turns out just the way you want it too, it sure sounds
like a lot of work but will be worth it in the end.

Your travels sound so exciting, and hope you have a safe trip. I wish I could
be going to Denver, but finances will not allow me to go this year. Am hoping
to eventually attend a conference, and would love to meet you in person. How
exciting that you will be teaching, and owning a supply business will keep you
extra busy!

I'll wrap up now, but want you to know how much all your goodies have meant to
me, and know that I will treasure them always.

Your grateful SP,

Cary

[lace-chat] home made bobbin winders

2005-06-29 Thread susan
i was hoping to find a way to make a bobbin winder. i don't want the
one made with legos. i want one that is manual and cheap to make. as
strange as it sounds, i thought to make one out of a kid's fishing
reel. can anyone take any guesses on how to do this?

my guess is to attatch the reel to a piece of flat wood, use a vacuum
cleaner band to attach it to another wheel. or attatch a holder to the
outside of the reel to hold the tip of the bobbin and bypass the vacuum
cleaner band and wheel altogether. any tips on what type of holder
might be available to attatch to the outside of the spinning reel?

if anyone would have an idea please let me know because i am not
looking forward to hand spinning a lot of bobbins!

[lace-chat] Humour

2005-06-29 Thread Malvary J Cole
I think we might have seen these before - but it laughter is good for the
soul.

Sarah, the church gossip and self-appointed arbiter of the church's morals,
kept sticking her nose into other people's business.

Several residents were unappreciative of her activities... but feared her
enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she
accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his pickup
truck parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She commented to
George and others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing.

George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away.
He didn't explain, defend, or deny... he said nothing.

Later that evening, George quietly parked his pickup in front of Sarah's
house... and left it there all night.

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with
a fly swatter.

What are you doing? She asked.

Hunting Flies He responded.

Oh. Killing any? She asked.

Yep, 3 males, 2 Females, he replied.

Intrigued, she asked. How can you tell?

He responded, 3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone.

At Heathrow Airport in England, a 300-foot red carpet was stretched out to Air
Force One and President Bush strode to a warm but dignified handshake from
Queen Elizabeth II.

They rode in a silver 1934 Bentley to the edge of central London where they
boarded an open 17th century coach hitched to six magnificent white horses.

As they rode toward Buckingham Palace, each looking to their side and waving
to the thousands of cheering Britons lining the streets, all was going well.

This was indeed a glorious display of pageantry and dignity.

Suddenly the scene was shattered when the right rear horse let rip the most
horrendous, earth-shattering, eye-smarting blast of flatulence and the coach
immediately filled with noxious fumes.

Uncomfortable, but maintaining control, the two dignitaries did their best to
ignore the whole incident, but then the Queen decided that was a ridiculous
manner with which to handle a most embarrassing situation.

She turned to Mr. Bush and explained, Mr. President, please accept my
regrets. I'm sure you understand that there are some things even a Queen
cannot control.

George W., ever the Texas gentleman, replied, Your Majesty, please don't give
the matter another thought. You know, if you hadn't said something I would
have assumed it was one of the horses.
