[lace] Buttonhole stitched eyes
I'd forgotten the buttonhole stitches over threads to make the eye of 'hook and eye' mentioned by Tamara. What was even worse, was 4 (and it had to be 4 according to my teacher) threads exactly one and a half inches long joining the lining and the outer fabric hems of a dress at each side seam, which were then buttonhole stitched over to make a 'swing tack' which stopped the lining of a dress riding up inside the outer fabric. Who wears lined dresses nowadays? Only those who can afford to buy couture clothes I suspect. We might have strayed off lacemaking, but it's interesting, if only because I've realised that I could probably have a go at needlelace. [lace] Buttonhole stitched eyes
In message [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jean Nathan [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes Who wears lined dresses nowadays? Only those who can afford to buy couture clothes I suspect. Which takes me back several years to when our lace group had a day out in Bridgnorth, Shropshire (actually, it was May 1993, thinking about it) and visited the Museum of Costume and Childhood (I'm not sure if it is still there, but I think it is) where they have some quite interesting lace in their collection. One of the items displayed was a dress previously owned by the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, (probably on loan) which had been made by Norman Hartnell. Even that wasn't lined! There was also a tremendous lace flounce, made for one of the European royal families from the symbols included in the design - which was shown to us because we were lacemakers - you do need to identify your interests to the staff when you visit the smaller museums! One thing I remember was a board displaying crochet samples - most unusual. (Bridgnorth is one of the stations on the Severn Valley Railway, a preserved line running steam trains on a daily basis most of the year; it is not far from Telford where there are various heritage museums, well worth a visit if you are coming to the UK and need to give in to husband and children occasionally! It is also within easy reach of Stourbridge - where The Lace Guild have their HQ, The Hollies). -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I do, I do for winter things, not necessarily lined dresses, but definitely lined skirts and lined dress pants. Wool pants do seat if they aren't lined. [lace] late night question
I have a few (box full) of brass lace pins that are badly tarnished. How do I clean them? I thought of using the same solution I use for my jewelry but have a vague recollection that I should be using vinegar or even coke? Dear spiders, Please do not post the same message to both lists. If it's lace-related, it belongs on the lace list. If it's not lace-related, then it belongs on the lace-chat list. RE: [lace] late night question
Hi Jenny - I amazed myself when I could put my hand right on this bit of information (some digging was required!) CLEANING BRASS PINS: In a heat-proof mug or bowl put 1 TBSP vinegar, 1 TBSP liquid detergent and about 3/4 cup of boiling water. Put the pins in the mixture and let sit for about 10 minutes. Rinse and drain. Let dry in a warm place. Your pins will sparkle like new! Re: [lace] Pillow storage
I went to Ikea looking for the storage containers that Bev had recommended, however, they only had tall tubes (with the name she mentioned), which would not have taken a pillow. But I did find a flat tray with a zipped top that I'm sure will take at least 2 18 cookies, or may take my big Simon Toustou pillow. It is 18 (45cm) x 22 (56cm) x 8 (20cm) - called Skubb (reference 800.953.77). [lace] a new student!
Dearest Spiders, Today I went to a local SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event, just folks from the New Orleans area, and a friend introduced a new gal, by saying, this is our lace maker, you should see her lace. And the lady, Joanne, asked if I made bobbin lace, something she's always wanted to learn. Apparently her grandmother from Puerto Rico made lace, and she has all of her grandmother's bobbins, the pillow, and best yet - samples! Would I please teach her how to make lace? Of course! I mean, how could I say no? And I'm dieing to see the bobbins, pillow, and the samples. We don't have a specific date set yet for the get-together, but probably in a couple of weeks. I'm excited. I also told her about our community. A convert!! RE: [lace] Pillow storage
I just found the XXL and XL bags in our local grocery - which is part of a large regional chain... Food Lion . Three (XXL) in a box for $5.99. So they should be in most grocery stores in the US now. Look in the section where food wrap and garbage bags are stocked. I have used vinegar. The pins come out gleaming. Too gleaming, but anyway clean. Aurelia I have a few (box full) of brass lace pins that are badly tarnished. How do I clean them?
