[lace] Lace classes

2006-01-23 Thread Laceandbits
Before we advertise elsewhere, I would like to let the Arachneans know that
we have a couple of vacancies in each of two courses at the end of this year.
These full board, residential courses are held in a 3 star, Best Western
hotel in Dover (England).

The first is the weekend of 6th, 7th and 8th October, with Pat Read, studying
Milanese and other bobbins laces. As the title suggests most students work
on Milanese but Pat will teach most bobbins laces. All abilities are welcome.

The second weekend is 17th, 18th and 19th November, with Bridget Cook, and
the class is called Lace with an International Flavour. Again most bobbin
laces
can be studied, with a lot of the students working on Russian and Idrija.
This class is also the place to be if you want to design lace, as Bridget can
help you with most types. Once more, all abilities are welcome.

Please contact me off line if you would like further details sent as a PDF
file.

[lace] the new web site

2006-01-23 Thread Tess Parrish

I have spent a happy time on this snowy day exploring the new web site:
   http://www.handweaving.net/DAHome.aspx

I checked on the CD area and found that it only mentioned weavers and
weaving. Be patient! Kris will be posting the information for the
lace CDs as soon as he can.

Another thing I found was something called Gallery. Here it seems that
he posts items that have been woven from the books and patterns that
the weavers have sent in--from old out-of-copyright material. I wonder
if any lacemakers (or tatters or knitters or etc etc) have tried to
copy any of the old material? If so, we can certainly add to the list.
If you think that's a good idea, please let me know.

In fact, I hope that people will write me with suggestions for
improving the lace section of this new version of the Professor's site.
Kris Bruland, our new man, is very welcoming to lacemakers, but he is
a weaver and doesn't automatically understand what we might want to see
on the site. He is definitely devoted to answering our suggestions, so
please think about it.

By the way, I found that if you go to languages and put in the
language of your choice, you will see a nice listing of everything on
site in that language.

Thanks for the Heads-Up Tess.

The KEYWORD SEARCH CAPABILITIES on the new site is wonderful. Give it a
try.
I like the new site. Course I like to weave and spin, also.

[lace] Oya reticella laces

2006-01-23 Thread auntsis
Does anyone know of anyone in the US who teaches these laces? I am especially
interested in learning the Turkish laces/Oya. I am hoping to find someone on
the east coast who teaches it but will go just about anywhere.

Re: [lace] Oya reticella laces

2006-01-23 Thread Barb ETx
Dear Christina...well, first. no, I do not teach Needle oya.! ;-)
I have two books on the subject and a couple of us are stumbling along. I
have a friend, who was here on Sat, and she left with my
book...Turkish/English version She sent me a link to site where the book, in
Turkish, is printable Great pictures. too
http://www.akmb.gov.tr/turkce/books/osmanlidangunoyalar/ It has good
diagrams and some English. She has also found a lady in Ca who makes and
sells and will send that link to me , also

About a year ago i becamse interested and eventually thru ebay made contact
with a gal in Istanbul, she is very fluent in English. Suzan (Caliskan) is
lovely and thru her I bought the books I have. She sells strips of the needle
oya and other Turkish hand work. on ebay. She also handles the thread that
she said is used...I questioned that when it arrived, because of the texture,
but my friend, Shay, said that she read the pieces are starched. So we are
learning every day.

You can go to Suzans ebay store, the link is
http://stores.ebay.com/sunnymailbox .
Christina, suzan is a lovely ,helpful lady. ...about 45 years old. Gentle,
kind and well spoken. We have become fast friends...the name I use for her is
Sunny...and she is!

If you have access to PIECEWORK magazine (Interweave Press) two issues have
very good articles about needle oya. Issue J/A 1996 page 22 and the current
issue J/ F 2006 page 28. Both are informative in different ways and both
have instructions.this lates issue explains how there are peopl buying the
needle work of the ladies in the smallcommunities, especially since the 1999
earthquake, so they can make money 'for bread' i think both issues are
available.
I do not think reticella is related to the mid-eastern laces...Armeniam lace
is and the needle oya is classed with Bebilla. it is prominant in most
mid-eastern countries.

i was so pleased to see you inquiry. Suzan has the book I bought ((she
originally found it for me )..it is out of print. that is what started his
friendship.She still lists it, occasionally.very expensive...but i am
glad that I bit the bullet and got it. I have a second book on beaded oya, no
English but great pictures. Jeri in Maine mentioned the two volume set that
Suzan also has. it is a reference catalogue. I have not seen it.
Oya can be needle, tatted, beaded and /or crocheted. The word itself means
embellishment. please let me hear what you learn and I will forward any
information the crosses my desk..

[lace] Commerative time again!

2006-01-23 Thread JIM PRUITT
Hi All
Yes, it's time to start thinking about this year's commeratives. I was
wondering if anyone minded if I put my bid in to do them this year. It's
been six years since I've done them, and I had this idea. I heard chatter
on the list about having bobbins with something like Member since 1995 on
them. Now, if we have a vendor do this, it'll take extra time to get the
orders in for painting. But since my painter is right here in the same
town, it won't take any longer to get the bobbins painted.
What do you all think? If there's any problem with this idea, we can do the
usual, and take bids. We do need to start looking for contact people for
the different countries, so if you did it in prior years, and would like to
do it again, I would love to hear from you!
Bless you!

I, for one, would enjoy having another of JoAnne's bobbins. I say she
should at least be allowed to put in a bid for vote by Arachne, or
even have her do them again this year.

Gretchen Allgeier taught knotted needlelace and oya construction at the
Hasbrouck Heights IOLI convention. She was even able to teach it left-
handed (that may not matter to you, but it sure did matter to me!).
She used to own the shop Beggar's Lace in Colorado, so maybe the
current owner knows how to contact her.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: Southern humor

2006-01-23 Thread Tamara P Duvall
Must be that time of year... We're in the season for Southern jokes
again. The list here was much longer, but since I remembered seeing all
but one before, I'm sending only that one :)

From: R.P.

A man in N.C. had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and
proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one
behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait. A passerby studied the
scene as he drove by and was so curious he turned around and went back.
He asked the fellow what the problem was.

The man replied, I have a flat tire.

The passerby asked, But what's with the flowers?

The man responded, When you break down they tell you to put flares in
the front and flares in the back! I never did understand it neither.
