Hi all!
I've been enjoying the bobbin makers that you have all suggested.
My suggestion would be that if you have them you include the
email or web site for each though.
Thanks!
And one that I have not seen listed yet and our group is going to
use this year is JoAnn Kremer at:

She is in California and did some of the Commemoratives for
last years IOLI Convention. All that I've seen of hers are great
and she does a lot of different choices.
Thanks for all the good ideas!

I use a pinlifter so raise the pins up from the pillow. All the
suppliers, as we know, have them. Alternatively you can make your
own.Get a large darning needle, saw through the eye half way down
and then buff it smooth. The cut end can then be bent, put into a
holder and you get a smaller, smoother end to go under the pin and
between it and the lace. The needle itself can then be cut to fit
into the
holder.

[lace] old lace related document

2006-03-13 Thread sealacehaven

Hi spiders
Long time since I've posted, but I've been lurking nevertheless. Anyhow,
whilst doing some research at the County Record Office, in Ipswich, Suffolk
(UK), I came across referencing to an old document, which I did have a quick
look at. It is an old vellum document dating from 1830 and it details the
Deed of Partnership between Jonathan Austin and John Greenwood who were lace
manufacturers in Nottingham (UK). I didn't read further because I had
limited time for my own research.

I don't know if anyone is doing research to which this may be relavant, or
knows someone who is, but if you are please contact me and I can give you
the specific catalogue details for re-locating this item. If you were
actually looking for it you'd never find it and why it is in the Ipswich
Record Office archive is anybodies guess.

bye for now

True. When I rigged a roller out of ethafoam, and needed to weight the

They are still stabilizing the container after 5 years in a dry environment.

[lace] garters

2006-03-13 Thread Dona B.
Okay, I'm very guilty of just glossing over and deleting things that don't
pertain to me at that moment. And so I've done with the information regarding
garters. (I only have 3 daughters; why on earth would I want information on
garters?!) Could I possibly have been in denial that they would one day leave
home and, gasp! get married? vbg But I find myself most likely needing one
for a wedding next summer and I'm sure I will need every month of this next
year to complete this, being a very slow lacemaker and looking at an another
possible overseas move later this summer. (I'm just getting the bobbins
untangled from the last move!)
So, for the first few questions...would 1.5 inches be a wide enough lace? And
exactly how is the lace attached to the elastic? And I'm assuming the length
should be based on the measurement of her thigh x how much? The pattern we
are currently looking at is called Marjory, found in 100 Traditional Bobbin
Lace Patterns by Stott and Cook.
The idea is to work the lace in silk using white Au Ver A Soie with a blue
gimp, hopefully in Soie Perlee. I've not checked yet to see if that is
available. Is this a reasonable plan? Is there something more we should
consider? And is there something written on the web or elsewhere regarding
making garters, so perhaps I can refer to that rather than bother the list
with questions I know have been addressed in the past?
Any an all input is appreciated.

blowing through.

Re: [lace] garters

2006-03-13 Thread bevw
Hi Dona and everyone

First off, not to worry if the question has been asked before - ask away...

So, for the first few questions...would 1.5 inches be a wide enough lace?

Yes, if you are attaching it to ribbon ('something blue' presumably)
If the lace is narrow, choose wide ribbon.

And
exactly how is the lace attached to the elastic?

It does depend a bit on the lace, whether you are gathering it or not.
Looking at your pattern 'Marjory' I should think you wouldn't want to
make more than necessary
I'll let others answer about the attaching.

And I'm assuming the length
should be based on the measurement of her thigh x how much?

again, depends on if you are gathering the lace. The length I'm
working on, a Torchon repeat, will be lightly gathered, and I'm
making 1 metre. The bride-to-be has been shy about telling me her leg
measurement so I'm going by that recommended by V. Sorensen in 75
Quick and Easy Patterns. For my lace I could even thread the
ribbon/elastic in as I go, in the middle area (I haven't done this
yet). For a picture or two, see my blog, url below.

The pattern we
are currently looking at is called Marjory, found in 100 Traditional Bobbin
Lace Patterns by Stott and Cook.

There is a lot of weaving going on in the petal areas, might be time
consuming in the long run? Have a look at Maybuds a few pages earlier,
or Lucky Horseshoes near the beginning - both have less areas of solid
weaving (eliminate the tallies in the Maybuds) and will work up more
quickly. If you go with Lucky Horseshoes you can make quite a bit and
gather it more fully, for a garter.
I made a hanky edging for a bride with the pattern Celebration, and
made another bride a length of 'Wedding Bells' - both times with a
time limit, and it wasn't fun trying to hurry the lace. My favourite
when time is short is to make the Little Hearts pattern. It works up
quickly and is an interesting repeat.

The idea is to work the lace in silk using white Au Ver A Soie with a blue
gimp, hopefully in Soie Perlee. I've not checked yet to see if that is
available. Is this a reasonable plan?

It sounds reasonable if you can get the thread. Silk is lovely to work with.

For future reference, don't forget to have a 'throwaway' garter on
hand if the groom is going to toss the garter ;)

[lace] more on garter lace

2006-03-13 Thread bevw
Hi again everyone, and more free advice for Dona

As I'm working away bit by bit on the length of lace for the garter, I
keep reminding myself that only a few key people are ever going to see
it up close. Not that I'm being careless about the work, but if I do
make a boo-boo that I notice some pins too late, I don't fret about
un-lacing to correct it unless it is strategic to the structure of the
lace. Ditto, when I chose the pattern, I
wanted something that wouldn't be too demanding to work, because,
again, few people are going to see it up close, and I don't want to
waste time struggling with a lace that maybe would show better as a
dress trim, than gathered into a garter. Several years ago my son's
bride-to-be accepted the 18 inches of 'Wedding Bells' I managed to
make and I suggested she just use it any way she saw fit - on her gown
or on the veil. She squidged it tightly onto the comb of her veil -
the pattern was completely lost therefore, but, she did wear it with
pride, and for that I was very touched.

knew immediately it must come from you!

The cross-stitch magazin is very tempting again. I love it! The necklace is
pretty - Did
you make it? I can't figure out the technique, but I really like it!

The pencilcase will help me to keep my felt-pens for the colour-code drawings
together and to see which are in place. :-

My children like the shapes of the magic towels. I asked the girls, not to tell
their little
brother what they are. ** At the moment he tries to avoid taking showers
and I
told him to take the little thing in the bathtub with him tonight. So he is
quite eager to
take a bath in a few hours. *bg*

Thank you for everything and last but not least for your letter. I enjoy each
single thing
you and your son chose for us. Btw, my daughter would like to know, how old
your
son is.

Greetings from cold sunny Germany, where the snow melts and floods start
Martina

Dear Secret Pal in Belgium

Well, what a super package I received this month.

The chocolates have long gone! The kids thought they were fab and wanted to
know where to buy them! I have seen space dust sweets here in the UK but
never chocolate with space dust in!! Although our cat is getting old (he
is 14 years nearly), he has had a play with the balls. We all had a giggle
about the hamster food - it is called Cookie and that is the name of the
hamster! Finally, I think boiled eggs will be on the menu for tea this week
complete with the special egg covers.

Finally the lace pattern and card showing it completed. How lovely. Both
Matthew and Bethany have almost finished the pieces on their pillows so I
know one of them will want to do the cat playing with the bobbins - or maybe
I will get in their first!

I can't wait 'til next month!!

Best wishes

Your Secret Pal in England

Dear Secret Lace Pal in England,

First I must thank you for another item that escaped my last note. DS2 seems
to have borrowed the little light for a church camp in the mountains
(BR-r-r-r-r-r). They had a series of concerts and he said it was wonderful!

Now, my thanks for the latest great package. More bobbins! They're
wonderful and I just found some spangles from a while back that never made it
onto anything, so they'll be perfect. I don't have any with a similar head, so
they'll be fun to try out. The little note cards are so cute! I adore the
little bears. The album is also very appropriate. I'll put some little
samples into it to carry around for my I'm a lacemaker and this is what I do
show and tell!

The iddy-biddy book is hilarious! The timing was perfect, as last week there
seemed to be a little too much testosterone in the house. Many of the quotes
I'd heard, but there were many new ones, as well. They were all very
appropriate for having sons.

My favorite color is all of them! Doesn't help, does it? Right now I'm
working on a leaf/tree project, so greens are all over the house. I've always
loved various shades of blue, though.

  I appreciate your thoughtfulness!
