I am interested in trying to find a used Christina pillow to purchase. I don't believe I can afford the price of a new pillow along with the shipping from overseas. Is there anyone out there who knows of someone who would be willing to part with theirs? If so, please contact me privately. I just googled Christina pillow lace. There are some very good ideas of how to achieve the circle needed to move the bobbins, especially from Margo Walker in Halifax. That's if you just want the mechanics - not the beauty of a real Christina pillow. [lace] Handkerchief fabric
I have a Louise Colganâs Torchon wedding handkerchief edging in linen, and Barbara Corbetâs Flanders âChainâ handkerchief in 70/2 Egyptian cotton. For the linen Torchon, I am assuming handkerchief linen. Is that correct? I have two kinds, one is a couple of Irish linen handkerchiefs purchased for the purpose in Victoria, Canada, or handkerchief linen yardage purchased about 10 years ago. Obviously, anything used needs to be thoroughly washed and ironed. But how about the handkerchief done in Egyptian cotton? For the interior cloth, should that be cotton? And if so, where in the US? Any mailorder sources from satisfied customers? I have no idea where to get cotton so fine. Anyone in Chesapeake Region Lace Guild know if G Street Fabrics would sell something like that? Re: [lace] Handkerchief fabric
Lyn, I agree that the fabric of a handkerchief should be the same fiber as the lace - and, if possible the same weight. For the Flanders handkerchief, a batiste cotton would be appropriate. I should think G Street Fabrics would carry it, but I have had good luck getting nice lawn and batiste from Martha Pullen, online. RE: [lace] Handkerchief fabric
One place to look for cotton is your local charity or thrift shop. They often have handkerchiefs of sufficient size that you can crop off anything which is already there. Failing that, check out men's cotton handkerchiefs. They are often not square but as they are plenty big, you can pull a thread and straigten the edges you want to use. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Fw: Handkerchief fabric
Hi Lyn... Not only do your filters send us all sorts of garbage instead of punctuation marks, but they also send us insulting messages, asking us to apply for acceptance to your inbox... to reduce spam. Frankly, when you have asked us for advice, I resent the implication that this system sends out. As a result, you don't hear from me as often as you might... without the filters. There are other ways to reduce spam! Perhaps you would get more input from Arachne if you found a better system. I hope so... because I refuse to apply for permission to answer your questions! (See... Didn't that sound awful!!!?). Honest Injun... Just a heads up... [lace] Scarf progress
I have posted a couple of photos of the progress of the Christine Mirecki scarf pattern that I started two weeks ago on my webshots page. I don't work on it every day as in the evenings I do needlelace or knitting, so I am pleased with the progress. At this rate, I might have it finished for convention in August. Thanks for the help I received from Arachne members before I started. I find the silk thread very slubby and it needs tensioning often. My homemade roller pillow is working out okay, but being about 30 inches wide it is difficult to carry around. I love the way the colors are working out. I decided to add a fringe later if I want one and if I have enough thread left over, otherwise I might do something decorative at each end. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/149126673AmIpMo?start=12 Janice Janice Blair Crystal Lake, 50 miles northwest of Chicago, Illinois, USA www.jblace.com http://www.lacemakersofillinois.org - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Scarf progress
Dear Janice, Not only do the colors work magic next to each other, from what I could see, the tension looks nice and even, not that I am a judge, but it looks like you've had no problems with it. Lovely to look at, delightful to wear. I see it is another bobbin management project. You've made great progress considering it is not your only project. [lace] To Lynn...
To all Arachids... apologies in advance for this use of our forum... It won't happen again. Dear Lynn... I'm very sorry you have taken offense to my message about your email system. It was meant as a criticism of your email screening system only... and not as a criticism of you or your input in all things regarding lace - of which you have shown a deep love and knowledge worth sharing. However, I am forced to respond to you regarding this post which you just sent me for the same reason I sent you the post!!! If I responded to you directly (which I have attempted on several occasions), the nastygram message from your service tells me I could not get past the gate without authorization. I was trying to tell you that if you had a less offensive service, (it's your *service* which is offensive, not you!!!) you might have more give and take from Arachne. This is not about you... it's about the service you use. I value your contributions, but again, I am insulted by the demand that I have to go through the equivalent of airport screening to send you an email!!! I simply draw the line there. So I won't respond to anything you write, on Arachne, regardless of how intriguing the subject is. And while others haven't complained before... I suspect their response will (continue) to be the same. Clay Dear Clay, It appears that I rub you the wrong way. This is at least the second time you let me know you were offended by something I have written or done. When no one else did. I assure you it is not my intent. I have apologized and changed the email. What more do you want? Or are you looking for more apologies? I have no idea what messages are sent to you, but surely you realize they are canned. One could, I suppose, interpret this as you have, but I doubt many would. I prefer to read my arachne messages on my suspect email, which does send back that suggestion that you request me to go to my suspect email. Most people have no problem with it. The one or two, literally, who did not like it are not overly missed, I assure you. I am also rather surprised that you have chosen to send what can only be characterized as a nastygram, with no punches pulled, to the group as a whole, as well as to me as an individual. It has always seemed to me that criticism should be given in private. Someone who seems to take offense so easily should certainly be ready to have more consideration. I cannot help what my mail system does to apostrophes and quotation marks. I have tried to write without them, but it is difficult. I would mention that regardless of the bizarre symbols, you were able to understand my post. Thank you again for mentioning Martha Pullen. I will probably order from them. lrb - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Handkerchief fabric, II
Dear All, I forgot to ask what kind of fabric to ask for. Then I remembered some fairy tale where some drops of blood were gathered on a piece of cambric. I think the fairy tale involved swans, not sure. So then I looked up cambric. Wikipedia is such a useful tool. Cambric was a specially finished fine fabric, could also be batiste. Baptiste is the name of the first weaver of Cambric, which was in Cambrai/Kamerijk. So cambric and batiste are more or less the same fabric. Then thereâs lawn and nainsook. And cambric was originally linen, and now is cotton. Like our fine lace threads. I have more handkerchiefs than most people my age, because I wore contacts, and the lint from a tissue created tears, so I actually used handkerchiefs. Seems to me the only practical thing to do is take the nicest handkerchief with me and compare it to what is for sale, regardless of the name. Problem is, I will probably use mailorder. Still problems. Martha Pullen, suggested by Clay, has at least 3 grades of batiste, ranging in price from about $8 a yard to about $28 a yard. I suspect that the people who write the Wiki articles are not textile pros, so anyone who has an opinion as to what to look for by name would be greatly appreciated. [lace] scarf project
Hello Janice- I have that pattern on my pillow too. The nubs do get in the way of working as quickly as one does with other fibers. I've gone from a roller pillow set-up back to a block pillow. I find that I have to keep an eye on the thread and deliberately twist it up once in a while since in several cases the thread un-twisted as I worked and pulled apart while tensioning--softly, slowly, gracefully, but inconveniently! I'm using the blue/green color way. I took it to show my pottery classmates recently who were wondering what all my lace stuff was like. It was a great pattern to show how threads travel and merge. [lace] Question about appearance of messages on Arachne?? (was:Re: [lace] To Lynn...)
Dear Spiders, With only curiosity, I am wondering about how some of our messages are appearing to each other in light of Clay's and Lyn's recent messages. Lyn's messages (as well as some others) appear to me (on AOL) with three diamonds filled with a question mark wherever there should be an apostrophe or quotation mark. My eyes can adjust to figuring this out fairly easily and I don't think much about it. A test attempt to reply to Lyn's message (without actually sending the reply) does not appear to be asking me to apply for any special permission as Clay was experiencing. I am just wondering what other Arachneans' systems are experiencing with regard to how messages look, as well as special permissions like Clay described being requested (in general, not just to Lyn). I have never had a request to apply for permission to reply to any email, to anyone with any system. So is this unique to certain ISPs uniquely, or in specific combination with certain other ISPs? Avital, I think you are more savvy in these areas than most of us, so maybe you have an answer? It reminds me of an old type of question such as, we all know what we identify as red (for example) looks like.but do we all really see the same thing? (Hope you know what I mean...and that doesn't sound too weird...((-;) Just curious.
